You need to listen Ethan in the Glixel podcast. Is like a nerd that change schools and can shine without the old friends bullying him. Also helps he did not talk again about the joycon keychain idea.

I was hoping he would counter the active Switch hate on Glixel but he didn't.

Don't worry, that podcast won't exist in a year when John inevitably leaves to do something else.

I've listened to maybe 5 of glixel's podcast. Every episode they're super negative about everything. Also hate the "resi" talk. And Rachel doesn't add anything to the conversations except negativity.

I quite enjoy the Glixel podcast. Didn't really think the podcast was filled with negativity other than being Switch skeptical. I'll keep an eye out for the general positive to general negative vibes for this weekend's cast.

I don't disagree with Rich about "all I need" with Switch being some good Nintendo software. Indeed, I feel comfortable buying one at launch because I'm pretty confident the lineup will justify the console over its lifespan (I didn't buy a Wii U at launch and might not have, had it not come cheap... but in the end, I really enjoyed the machine and its software).

...but for all the other things he says about this being something of an ideal device for him, I certainly hope that it gets a library that exceeds those needs :)

I think the Switch doing basic tablet things will be key for Nintendo when they go for a younger demographic. Kids don't usually have tablets, and they have pretty poor phones (when they have one). If Nintendo can provide them with a great web and media streaming device they'll freaking love the Switch.

My nephew has an old iPhone but he never uses it while playing games. He often looks game stuff up on the PS4 web browser.

That said it's understandable it's not available at launch, given that the web browser has been used to hack several game systems (including the PS4). It's not something you can half-ass for launch, they have to make sure it's secure before distributing it.

I'll take a listen today. You guys have a GOTY cast by any chance?

They have several, you can find them all here.

Just seen a picture of Ethan Einhorn WTF!!!!, doesn't look anything like the picture i had in my mind!!

It's a shame their live hangout has audio from the 1940's compared to their proper audio they record for the podcast. Otherwise I'd have suggested to always watch the show on Youtube.

Good. I was listen the last Glixel podcast and the Switch negativity will sum with the P1 Switch positivity and give me a fully neuter perspective.

The first time I noticed it was when he was at PAX, but it's been bad since then too so I dunno what is up with that.

That's because I had to use the backup track in both instances and since his internet connection wasn't great there are some distorted bits.

Two episodes ago i was half expecting Stewy to rep the 2D awesomesauce of the Sega Saturn after remarking how the N64 and PS1 haven't aged well.

My favorite part of this Nintendo podcast is that they occasionally talk about other consoles and games. Good stuff.

Edit: holy shit Ethan's arguments are driving me up a wall ahhhhhhh

Kevin being the voice of reason to Ethan is weird. lol

I love those guys but I don't know how anyone can be OK with how Nintendo has presented the Switch. The botched announcement to the mystery behind what it does outside of boot up games.

Will the OS be slow like the WiiU? We get news about another ID we need to create today. It doesn't feel ready for launch at all.

Isn't it just the Nintendo Account ID? That's from like a year ago, but they changed it in January so that you can lock in a different display name from your account name. That's weird if that's required and not an optional thing.

As for the OS, it's not slow at all. But it's insane that the source for that information is from a stolen retail unit. Like it's something that people are concernd about and it's good news, so I have no idea why Nintendo hasn't highlighted that stuff in any way. I understand that they want any accelerated reveal to launch plan, but the Switch comes out in less than two weeks. People are buying into an ecosystem, but Nintendo's acting as if only day one matters before launch. That's dumb.

Nintendo Network ID is different from Nintendo Account ID. Yep. lol

Yeah, both CJ and Ethan were really brushing off the fact that we don't know anything about it other than you can't fit it into Ethan's pockets and that it plays Zelda on the go.

I know I said that it is "just" the Nintendo Account ID, but it's dumb that's a different thing from the Nintendo Network ID. Like my NNID is linked to my Nintendo Account ID. What? Why?

I haven't listened yet, but I don't think Nintendo's botched anything. They couldn't have done a better job promoting the key title in this line-up (since E3 of last year), and they've been promoting 1-2 Switch pretty well too. The conference that unveiled the system was pretty boring, but their marketing team, specially in NA, has been hitting it out of the park. They have a parental controls video with nearly 5 million views for crying out loud.

What the OS does besides booting up games is clearly not important to Nintendo. I think it's smart of them to not focus on that too, it would just invite unflattering comparisons with iOS and Android. And come on, Nintendo can't compete with Apple and Google.

Episode 537: Switch Snitch Gets Stitched

Listening to Ethan gets harder and harder with every new episode. Hopefully he calms down after the Switch launch because his deafness to anything negative about the Switch is really annoying. So props to Greg and Kevin for being a voice of reason.

Yeah. I'm sorry to say I'm getting more and more put-off listening to the show if Ethan continues the way he has previous weeks.

Everyone going crazy about Ethan again lol. Haven't listened to the current episode yet so I'm looking forward to it.

Haven't had any major issues with Ethan yet... Though him being as excited for the Switch but at the same time thinking it will be a absolute bomb/Co signing that Glixel negativity the last time felt a bit weird. Not even saying he is wrong (or right). But I can see the how being this extreme about specific topics can be a turnoff for some people.

I think it will slow down once the Switch is finally out and he realized a couple months in that getting every game won't be possible and too expensive lol.

I can't wait for this Switch launch to be over with. All the speculation and worrying and talk about launch strategies instead of games has been ruining multiple otherwise great gaming podcasts. It's not quite as bad as what the lead-up to VR did to podcasts, but it still sucks.

man the beginning of this episode is kind of annoying.

so sick of the internet bitching about every piece of info that comes out regarding switch/nintendo.

who cares if they didn't detail the specifics of the season pass. just but it once the stuff comes out. no reason to act like it's an actual issue.

cj had a really good point. just wait if you need to know 100% about the system or game or whatever

His inability to acknowledge any Switch criticism is the issue. He can be a fanboy. He can be excited. But people bring up completely legit issue and he actively goes out of his way to argue against every single one.

CJ is a fanboy but he either says nothing or at least acknowledges the issues and he brushes them off. Ethan doesn't brush them off, he argues that they're good or acceptable.

I much prefer "OK, that's fine that you feel that way, but I do not care about [insert Switch criticism here]." What are and are not legit issues are subjective and may or may not be shared as issues by the market buying a Switch.

Right. Which is fine. That's what I meant by brushing off, not that they don't matter to other people. May have used the wrong phrase.

Obviously the messaging on the BOTW Season Pass is garbage. Nintendo need to stop saying 'maybe sorta' when it comes to promising content and services. Mario Kart 8's DLC was laid out clearly before asking for a penny.

During the switch argument everyone argued independently that waiting was the best approach! :) Even Ethan said this!

I generally agree that Nintendo don't need to show anything more before launch, and they have all the hype they need to sell the day one units. It lets youtubers/press etc invest heavily on digging into the details on the hardware and services, and it gives them wiggle room if they want to adjust priority on day-one features and services.

Mostly it looks like Nintendo are planning to keep as much secret as possible so they can share and announce press-worthy things in late-March, April, May and June. Every launch window is terrible, so it'll be nice if Nintendo can weather this a little better.

The wave of excitement will already be monumental next Friday.

Heh yeah you would think Nintendo has yet to unveil the system, launch date and price when you look at some of the reactions lately.

No one has to pay for Switch online or the Zelda Documentary until Fall or all the information is out - yet so man people decide to loose their sleep about it.

There are maybe some details missing that they wanna keep for launch since they could be part of a Firmware update that gives us access to the eShop. But otherwise we know most relevant stuff.

Ethan is a little out of control over the Switch, I gotta say. I'm appreciative of what he brings to the show but between following him on twitter and hearing him on P1, I'm getting the impression that the hype has him in its clutches and he has no hope of escape.

I'm really excited for the Switch hardware too, but I think anyone should be able to see that right now there isn't enough content there to support these levels of absolute hype overload. Once the thing comes out and a month or so passes, the conversation is going to dry up. I'm looking forward to E3 though as I am hoping that will be the time when Nintendo steps up and makes a lot of great announcements.

Anyway, I am only halfway through the new episode but its been a good one so far. I just saw the thread here getting bumped and I had a feeling Ethan was going to be getting some discussion. Turns out I was right!

The thing I find most amusing about the unbridled hype is that it's coming from men who are veterans of nearly every video games console launch ever. Blokes who should well know that the first year of every console is a frustrating balance of potential and boredom, pierced only periodically by moments of fun.

Still, hope springs eternal:
  • See this awesome promotional flyer of games Nintendo has lined up? Not only are they all going to come out, they're all going to come out on time, and they're all going to be worth playing.
  • I'm confident Nintendo has learned from their mistakes and this time around they'll have thoroughly solved [insert feature].
  • Etc.

How I feel after listening to Ethan the last couple weeks

giphy.gif

At least Kevin and Greg tried to call him out, but nothing can stop his obsession. "I have no interest in iterative consoles. I will surely buy any and every iteration of the Switch"

I love the Player One Podcast, it's one of only a few podcasts I still listen to every week. But it's become insufferable when the Switch is discussed. CJ and Ethan just going on and on about inane stuff and defending every little gripe is not a fun listen. The first 40 minutes were just not something I wanted to listen to.

I should note I'm hyped for the Switch too, have even booked a long weekend when it comes out so I get that. Being excited doesn't mean you have to act like it's beyond criticism though.

Do what I do: listen closely to hear if their erections rubbing together starts the sound of an actual fire.

I always feared CJ would get loose one day and I thought we might all be ready for it, but it turns out I was blind and didn't see the threat coming in from the outside.

You are correct. The first year is never good. It's always frustrating. And things almost never come out on time. I don't know why I believe it now - maybe I shouldn't. I believe the March - Summer dates that've been announced for a few games to be correct (MK8D, Arms, Splat2) because they're so close. (Though Pikmin 3 on Wii U was supposed to come out very shortly after the system launched and then it got delayed till late summer. LEGO City Undercover was shown at the Wii U's announcement but didn't release until Spring 2013.) I think the Mario Odyssey release date is likely correct because that kinda botches their holiday if it isn't. I don't think FE Warriors, Xenoblade 2, or any other big third party thing outside sports will make their dates. Xenoblade 2 is laughable.

But I like new hardware. I like the concept of the Switch. I like Nintendo's games.

The hope is that any game company making an announcement learns from its mistakes but is it any different than seeing a trailer at E3 with a "next year" date and thinking that that thing will indeed release within the next 12-18 months? That right there almost never happens and yet the press and players have time and again been shown new awesomeness and gotten hyped only to have those games generally not come out on time or more likely be delayed at least 1-2 more years (or more in the case of some games). Nintendo is hardly the only one guilty of that. Nintendo's not the only first party that hasn't learned from prior mistakes, either.
