I like first one best.

Who is N?

Yeah, the pencil drawing guy.

Anyway, down the Aria rabbit hole I went:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1TiOONWy0uEjTOJd1amtyhdsOqjXf7-5zKsaIQhWh8Gc/edit?usp=sharing

I would appreciate some feedback in terms of location and whether or not the characters should just be walking through the streets or if they should be on gondolas, which would change the possible locations and so forth. Something involving San Marco square (or St Mark's Tower) seems to be the obvious thing to do, but there are other features as well (including some that I'm missing).

While I was looking for locations, I also went deep into pixiv and discovered a whole world of Aria art, which after a few hours, I tried to categorize and link in that Google doc. I found some more people who did more painterly art, and also a billion more penciley artists, so if someone would like to take the time to go through them and see if there's anything or anyone new they like, that would be great.

I probably need to take a break from Aria for a couple of days. lol

Apologies for interrupting your regularly scheduled program and for the image spam!

Anyway, I thought I’d get around to making a post about the Aria Poster Project.

First, here is a list of people that I have spoken to who are interested in this project. If you are interested in being added to the list, or if I have listed you incorrectly, please let me know:

firehawk12
darkblade77
cajunator
Mr.Jeff
Mockingbird
Haly
AmethystEnd
umbra
ZachDeKoromaru
Lambtron
Chariot
MikeHattsu
Theonik
wonzo
SDBurton
Mokoi
Kurt (who is not on GAF).

We managed to hit the 15-person target that Mockingbird suggested, so I’m happy about that.

So onto the next step – getting the commission. Mockingbird has been using hebitsukai for his anime commissions, and you can see his samples here: http://hebi.soragoto.net/#illust
His Paprika poster is on the first page of this thread, but here it is for reference:

Given that Mockingbird is already in contact with them, it would be easiest to use them as the artist of the poster. But I also did some searching on Pixiv to both find some potential samples to illustrate what I might want a poster to look like and to perhaps for alternative artists for the commission.

When I first thought of this project, in my head it would be a wide-angle shot with the characters enveloped by some aspect of Neo Venezia. I found an artist that almost perfectly captures the scale of wonder that the anime evokes.

From artist “N” - http://www.pixiv.net/member.php?id=6120611

They don’t really have contact info on Pixiv though, so I have no idea how easy or hard it would be to get in touch with them.

But there are some other examples I found as well:
From artist 優子さん~@仕事募集中 - http://www.pixiv.net/member_illust.php?id=4906112

From artist 雨音:
http://www.pixiv.net/member_illust.php?mode=medium&illust_id=41270013

From artistクロレッツ:
http://www.pixiv.net/member_illust.php?mode=medium&illust_id=42355094

From artist Dej:
http://www.pixiv.net/member_illust.php?mode=medium&illust_id=39126873

That said, I know that the characters are also the stars of the show as well, so I wouldn’t mind a mid-angle shot with all three (or six, or nine if you count the cats…) as well. Here are some random samples of that type of art:

From artist arceonn:
http://www.pixiv.net/member_illust.php?mode=medium&illust_id=41426093

From artist aiha-deko:
http://www.pixiv.net/member_illust.php?mode=medium&illust_id=31533882

The final kind would be a close up of the characters. I can see the appeal of this as well, because it would give you more detail of the characters. Here’s a random sample:
From artist薰衣吓跑学妹30年(战毕设中):
http://www.pixiv.net/member_illust.php?mode=medium&illust_id=34713668

This artist states they’re not doing commissions at the moment though.

Here’s one that is an x-factor that I just love because it captures episode 7 (“In That Gently Passing Time…”) of Aria: The Origination perfectly.
From artist 魂合 環:
http://www.pixiv.net/member_illust.php?mode=medium&illust_id=32658057

I love it because it’s both claustrophobic and also evokes infinite possibilities. It’s a reminder of how a chance meeting with a cat could change Alicia’s life and open up a whole new outlook on life for her. But I know that this is just a “me” thing!

Anyway, whether we end up using hebitsukai or not, if nothing else we should have an idea of what we’d like in order to give the eventual artist an idea of what we’d like their interpretation of the world to be based on.

If you guys have any other artists that you’d like to consider or any other thoughts, please chime in.

For Mockingbird - If there’s anything I’m just completely missing, feel free to point it out, because I’m very much winging this as best as I can. lol

I HAD NO IDEA THIS POST WAS A THING, THIS IS AWESOME.

Now after I calmed down, I have to say that my favorite of the ones posted was the one that shows the house from the top view.

I also really like this scene from the OVA

I have a better angled shot of this in my computer somewhere, an art that I probably got from Pixiv years ago that I just find beautiful. I'm going to try searching for it now, if anybody knows what I'm talking about please post it since it's easily one of my favorite pieces from the show.

You can buy in to this thing as well. Be sure to pick your stretchgoal first though. (AKA the thing firehawk has to watch in return)

Goddamn that's a lot of work. But, keep in mind not all artist are willing to take commissions.
Yes, I went insane. :(
And yeah, I just figured we'd have a list of artists and then just go through time in order to see who is doing any commissions, if any.

Cheers, I'll go through this later tonight.

I really like the style of the last picture. I approve of your findings.
It's the most Haly-ey of the ones I saw. No idea if they can do backgrounds like that and still make them recognizable though... probably!

Hey, are you in then? lol
I think it was generally agreed that people wanted the characters somewhat prominently in frame though, so that's the direction we seem to be headed.
And yes, I remember the train car scene well. I actually did find one on pixiv in my list of links somewhere, but it was from inside the train car instead of from the outside.

I'm not really sure what it is even after reading it, nor how much it'd cost. Are you or an artist, making a single picture which will then be made into a poster and sent to the people to wish to be included? Is that what it is?

We're going to try to find an artist (presumably on pixiv) and then have them draw something that will be turned into a poster. I think Mockingbird said the poster will cost about 30-40 bucks, depending on how many people there are - the more people in, the cheaper, of course.

I like Mike's work but I feel that he phoned it in on this one :( Ansin's version is leagues ahead of this one and I feel that Mike could have done better. I wish he wouldn't rely so much on his name and try to put his best foot forward every time.

the problem is, the only other screen print poster he has created is cronos. Everything else is giclee.

I definitely agree with the last one being awesome, especially because it has Ai in it (which automatically makes everything better). I don't have the time to look at everything now but I'll try to later.

You can leave now!

Winter is coming your all alone....

Thanks Sushi! Yeah, I would give away any print for the ability to nurture and take care of my little one. It's one of the most important moments of my wife and my life. Still sad that I wasn't able to get our daughter's nursery that Jungle Book Moss print ;)

Kids are great it definitely changes priorities in life and gives you different purpose. Also the first time my daughter said Dada was heart melting!!

Update:
Chariot ported my list of links to html, so that you can click them instead of cut and paste them in my low tech Google Doc:

Thanks Chariot!

Uh, guys? This has been one of my favorite Aria images for years and years, but only now did Umbra make me realize that it's not official art by Kozue Amano. That's just a testament to how good this guy is, I feel.

If we could get this or something close to it, I wouldn't need another poster on any wall ever.

It really is nice picture. I am for a wide shot featuring NeoVenice in the background like this
or the picture you mentioned, but having the gondola facing forward.

And I looked through the pixiv stuff and thought these looked nice:

I only looked at the pics in the link though, not any of the other artwork the artists had done.

They never sent out a tweet announcing it was up :( Luckily I was signing in and getting all my info caught up when I noticed they were changing the line up and that usually indicated a drop.

If your waiting for the tweet your doing it wrong for Mignola you'd need to be F5'ing the page no way that was going to be up more than 1min.

Well if someone missed out, there's one on there for $120 shipped. Doesn't seem too unreasonable compared to where the prices may end up.

Neat to see Ash Thorp mention GAF and Mockingbird when showing off the finished MGS prints today on Facebook, plus folks reacting to it.

... how do busy people even get this stuff? Im guessing it's all bots at this point?

lol when I worked at an office it was hard to do I have a outside job now so its easier. You need to find buddies to help you on a drop pay them extra for helping etc. You stand a better chance that way if its something you REALLY want.

I will look at them in a bit, but for sure the very top one takes commissions. Looking at all these though, they are similar to insert artwork for visual novel games. The printing method is thus limited to giclee (or lithography, but that's too pricey for a low quantity).
