Do you even know what the word 'racist' mean?! Racist means being exclusionary. Racist mean not wanting other race to be included in whatever activity you have because you deem them to be below you. Did I say I don't want Chris/Leon to be in the game? NO. Wanting your race to be represented in a media is not racist. Demanding, yes. Racist, no. Stop twisting words to suit your need.
Reality and context depends on the story and all of that is crafted by Capcom. If Capcom wants, they can make Chris gay. But of course they are not going to do that because they don't have the guts to make their lead character gay or anything that betrays the usual convention (straight white male). I'd buy each and every Capcom game IF they have the guts to make Chris gay. That'd at least show me that they have the guts to go against the grain aka the white male gamers. You can quote me on that.
Reality and context means that the woman who botched the experiment or whatever doesn't have to be white. Especially if the lab is actually located in Hong Kong/China. Why are we even assuming that it makes sense/realistic for her to be white when it makes equal sense for her to be of other race? Why can't the role that Ashley have at the moment be taken by a black or asian female agent?

It's racist for race to be a factor -- PERIOD. Which includes you having a beef with an all-white cast. If you don't want to be color-blind, fine, but you're targeting a franchise whose last game had a black lead and a black supporting character, both in positive roles. You have bigger fish to fry, aka every other game out of Japan.

Why do you assume that? Any representation is better than no representation. There's always an excuse to not represent a minority. And it's all about balance. If you have an evil character of one specific race (ie. Wesker) then you balance it out with a good character of specific race (ie. Chris). It's not that difficult.
Why are you assuming that all gamers feel the same way? Why are you assuming that people warm up to Ashley when they probably don't? And if they are going with new characters, what stopping them from giving them different race/background?

I assume that because of all the whining people had about black people as kill-able zombies in RE5 (this, despite the fact only white zombies were killed previously). Is it fair or right to ask that a writer change something from the way he creates it?
By that I mean, if a writer sets out and makes a story of pure fiction, should they force race in when it's very possible they created characters based on others they know? Or from events they have experinced? Or even simply because that is just what they happened to think of when creating it?
I don't think you or anyone who wants to see more of any group is wrong for wanting it, but I don't think it's fair to act like it's nearly as simple most writers adding a black/white/blue/green/gay character when they didn't set out to do so. If it's by choice then I'm all for it, I just don't know if I agree a writer should be forced to do so either.

Seriously man probably 80% of my friends are asian and none of them are obsessive like you seem to be. The racism/ignorance issues they deal with from society are real, not a game that happens to star 6 white characters in a long-running series that has used non-whites for about half of all it's characters.

It was a slight derail in the info thread between two or three people and Nirolak decided that it needed to be split off into a "debate thread."
I think it would be dumb (and maybe even racist) to shoehorn in an Asian character due to the location. Sheva spouting off stereotypical lines such as "This is for my fallen brethren" sounded so dismal and gag worthy. I'd have a problem if they gave us Lin Wong as a partner with lines like "I shall do this for my family's honor" and so on.
There shouldn't even be a debate at this point, as we've only seen mere seconds of gameplay. I can't believe that comment from the other thread was made into its own thread.

I didn't say it'd be easy or that it didn't require some forethoughts. But do you think movies/network TV will have as much diversity as it is now if it wasn't because there was a pressure to be more inclusive tens of years ago? And if color is just color, then what's the problem with making one or two characters of different race? It's not like they can't occupy the same roles that those new characters seem to be occupying at the moment since they are pretty non-descript and interchangeable with any characters. Sure there are those who don't want to see their race represented in flawed kind of way. But like the scientist, for example, judging from the story I don't think it's entirely her fault that the accident happened.
Having white characters makes them most relatable to the consumer they're marketing to. It'll sell more units and make Capcom more money. Sorry if that pisses you off, business wins again!

This stuff again? The outcry over RE5 being "racist" only actually made it seem racist when Capcom actually changed it so a lot more white people showed up. It was too varied for the African setting and actually just made me even more aware of the race.

Hell this one of N'Gai's things all those years ago about RE5's trailer using the imagry of Angry black men and not having any context, and how it was negative imagry and how it look so bad to others.
Does a Black man need to be BLACK(whatever that means)? No, because every human is different, but just throwing a color on to a body regardless of how they act, talk or even move could send different images to different people.

I'm always taken aback by, of all games, Resident Evil being some sort of equality proving ground and source of debate. I mean, shouldn't this argument be transferred to a game or franchise that reaches a little higher with its narrative? Nothing wrong with pondering, but geez, as much as you can argue it can't hurt to inject a little racial diversity, what exactly changes at the end of the day?
