Austin, to me, was more for a different type of fan than me. The "No Fear" and "Calvin peeing on disfavored truck company logo" type. Not that he didn't do that well and wasn't ever funny-- his schtick just was aimed pretty far wide of me and obviously there was no ringwork to make up for it.

WHAAAAAAAAAAATTT!?!!?

Austin had no ringwork? Austin vs Bret Hart and Austin vs the Rock were some of the best matches of the period. Not to mention all of Steve's work in WCW with Pillman and ECW (where he invented the Stone Cold character).

Just because he spent a lot of his time talking hick and drinking beer does not mean the man did not bring it in his matches.

Austin was one of the best before his injuries and still managed to put on amazing matches after his neck broke.
Well, that's your opinion, and I might add that Kurt Angle won a gold medal with a broken freakin' neck. :)

Best matches ever?

Best match ever is Rock v Hogan @ WMX8.

Some people really liked that match just because of the showmanship involved, but it left me pretty flat.

My picks for best match ever are either

HBK vs. Taker in the original Hell in the Cell

or

Bret Hart vs. Stone Cold in an I Quit match at WM. The one where Stone Cold passes out from blood loss rather than say I quit. BEAUTIFUL double-turn. Stone Cold becomes the heelish good-guy, Bret Hart becomes the whiny bad guy.

The stunner had character. It was also quick and efficient. A working man's finisher.

The people's elbow was always overblown and half the time he never had the time to drop it anyways.

Agreed.

I usually pop in from time to time to see what's going on with the WWE, but boy am I glad to see the Rock's back for a bit. Sent links out to some buddies, and they're all hyped.

Just watched The Rock's comeback from RAW last night. I have not enjoyed wrestling since he left, I may just have to get Wrestlemania this year.

Haven't watched Wrestling in years, Rock's comeback speech was awesome and I ended up on a long Youtube aided binge of Stone Cold stunner montages and HBK matches.

I tune in every now and then. But, now I might have to go back full-time again. Well, at least for RAW.

GAF OT in the 98-99 era would've been all wrestling. lol

I bet the wrestling thread would be bigger if wrestling wasn't so shit these days. The only time I was able to enjoy a wrestling show in the last 4-5 years was watching some ROH.

i liked wrestling when benoit and eddie guerrero were the champs

but the glorious days of rock and scsa were awesome as well

So is the Miz' shtick to be as annoying as possible? His name, his face, his song, his intro vid. God-damn I hope the Rock owns his ass hard. Even worse than Cena.

The Rock still has it, can't believe it's been 7 years since he wrestled...time just flies by. When did Michael Cole become Vince McMahon JrJr, I could barely recognize him till the Rock put the verbal smackdown on him.

I have one question. Where's JR at? Is he not commentating anymore?

King and JR were such an amazing duo. It would have been amazing for them to be the commentators during that show. [/nostalgia]

Not watched since WM20, but I'm tuning in every week JUST for The Rock. Everything else is being skipped.

My God, he still has it. Such a good promo.

Edit: Also, I agree with the above dude, JR needs to come back. Cole is a fucking hack.

Cole has turned into a troll per McMahon, and McMahon loves that character so he is staying in that role for a while.

Lawler has his mother's death to attend to. He is coming back on Sunday at the Elimination Chamber PPV to take on the Miz for the WWE title.

This was what I did about 1 hour before you.

The kick-the-undertaker back down People's Elbow :D

Watching that link of Booker T and Austin in the grocery store. Oh Gawd "Wheeeen the moooon hits your eye, like a big piiiiiizzzza pie, Dats...............AMOReeeeeeeeeeeee" [/frozen pizza to the face] hahahaahahaha

1996-1998 HBK = Superhuman. The man could not have a bad match. And then when he became the obnoxious asshole HBK that started DX... between that, Hart/Austin and the rise of the Rock, you could feel the tide turning for WWF in the ratings war.

that's...just fantastic.

I haven't watched wrestling since the days of Atom Bomb, Mr. Perfect, Razor Ramon, The Heart Foundation, The Natural Disasters and such. I'll watch to see what The Rock is cookin, though.

Haven't really followed pro wrestling since about '93 or so. I think the last WWF (yes there used to be a F in there instead of an E) PPV I watched was the one where the announcers wore togas or some shit. I was 11 years old and realized that it was fake and was pretty much done with it. Heard about some cool Ultimate Fighting Championship thing back then that was actually real but my parents would never let me watch that shit, lol. Later on I would catch bits and pieces of RAW during the attitude era while I was channel surfing just for the novelty of it all.

I don't get how grown men can be such hardcore fans in the crowd these days, let alone the teenagers. It seems like today's fans know it's all an act but don't care and just enjoy it for what it is, steroid monkeys who are acting out badly written dialog bookended by really fake fighting. I know, it actually takes a lot to do what they do and they put their bodies through hell to entertain their fans week in and week out, but still, wtf is the point? I tried to watch this Rock comeback speech thing and it was fun seeing him work the crowd until that whole angle came about with that Cole guy. It was just so contrived that it made it tough to watch the rest of it. And it almost seemed like people in the crowd had signs for situations that hadn't happened yet in the show that were prepared for certain things to happen.

For the people who are just coming back into wrestling, let me some you what you missed in the last 7 years... in GIFS!

Memories flashing back to wrestling with friends/cousins in the basement, throwing special moves at eachother... then randomly doing the spinaroonie. Good times.

This gives me so many wonderful flashbacks of late 1997.

Young, obnoxious, over-sexed, under-disciplined HBK was so awesome. I'm sure he was a fucking nightmare to work with, but my god his subversive energy roared out of the television.

If you didn't see them his matches with Undertaker at the last two Wrestlemanias were amazing.

I did. I haven't stopped watching WWF/E since I tuned in at the beginning of 1997 on a whim. :D

*shrugs* I always liked it for the mix of violence and story-telling. I watch UFC too, but I put money on matches cause I otherwise don't give a shit about who wins. Giving the performers characters that I can either actively like or dislike gets me into the matches more.

Then there's the layer on top of that, where if I like the performer as a performer - that is, I respect his ability in the ring, or on the mic - then I want to see him succeed because it's a sign that the company (or the writers) acknowledge that performer's skills and want to put more of what I find entertaining on screen.

Why are people hardcore wrestling fans? Same reason people are hardcore fans of any silly melodramatic thing (soap operas, daytime talk shows, etc.): people enjoy things that play on archetypes and which play to the base instincts. Sure, WWE is fake as fuck, but there's still something gratifying about it.

Yep, that's when me and my highschool buddies were all into it. I remember we went to Cobo Hall in the D to see Degeneration X at Raw or one of the non-Raw wrestling events. I remember watching Hell in a Cell 1 and Montreal Screwjob on PPV, so amazing.

Bwuahahaha that was great. As someone who hasn't watched wrestling in a decade, its great to see someone with real talent and charisma back in it.

The Stone Cold/Vince feud was the best wrestling ever got. So goddamned entertaining.

There's no official DVD collection or anything covering the best of the Attitude era is there? Storylines and matches from both the weekly shows and the PPVs.

Best of RAW Vol 1 and 2 cover most of that time period I think. Volume 3 and 4, which covers late 1999 and 2000 as well if I remember correctly. Aside from that, check out the Superstar-specific DVDs that focus on Stone Cold, The Rock, HBK, HHH, Mick Foley, Vince Mcmahon, etc.

I also really like the 'Monday Night Wars' DVD, which goes into the whole war between WWF and WCW, and how that brought about the edgier product.

There are actually quite a few performers in WWE right now with a fair degree of talent and charisma. Austin or Rock level? No way. But there are highly paid actors and entertainers that don't touch their natural charisma.

Rock and Austin, and HBK in the early years, all had the advantage of working in the WWF when they were making a point of attracting young adult viewers. They could say more aggressive things, they could be more violent in and out of the ring, etc.

Everybody in the WWE right now is handcuffed by the PG direction. Every star that starts to get a swell of ground-support, from Edge, to Orton, to CM Punk, get that support because as heels, they're allowed to walk a little closer to the edge, and that extra bit of edginess stands in stark relief to the bland, boring, kid-friendly crap that makes up most of the show.

It's really sad, because the flashes of edginess we've seen from the likes of Edge, Punk, Orton, Miz, and the rest, all make me think that these guys could put together a really good, exciting product if they had the Attitude Era rules to work with.

They brought the Rock back to fight some wannabe rapper named Cena? .. The Miz? The champion is some guy named the Miz?

Someone fill me in on whats been happening in wrestling for the last ten years.
