This really is the end of neogaf, I didn't post that much but I read a lot of threads and now everybody I recognize is already gone or leaving ... over the weekend I missed gaf while it was down and now that it's back it's no longer the same.

I will say I think the idea of Anonymous Moderators is a bad idea and gives off the appearance of some nefarious 'shadow police' system. This is especially concerning after this recent controversy, as others have also pointed out.
Moderators, especially for a site this big, have a tough, thankless job most of the time. Well, unless you are duckroll and just fuck around and troll people constantly.
They have to make judgement calls that some might not agree with. They have to be the bad guy when a ban decision has to come down. They have to field likely constant PMs, look out for potential fires in any of the many threads that are constantly cycling around multiple sub-forums, and rapidly jump on account suiciders that decide to post spoilers or nasty images on their blazing path out. I wonder how many times Kagari, or Stump, or Nirolak, or Y2Kev, or any other mod had to bite the bullet and eat some spoilers because they were online and quickly had to remove an intentionally shitty post to protect the community? It sucks... and that's why it's a job that still demands respect when done right. They have to determine the severity of each situation and each & every mod should own those decisions. That's why I was never a fan of the ModBot concept. There is no accountability in that, at least not from the community's perspective.
And although moderators do have the ability (and even right, as given by ownership) to paint with a brush of power, there should always be accountability. If the community sees a particular mod tossing the ban hammer around like a madman or finds patterns in the closure of threads for questionable reasons, community members should have a name to take to admins or people higher up. Without that, I feel the ownership/admins could simply say "We'll get to the bottom of this" with the potential for no helpful results, meanwhile the community does not have the peace of mind knowing the situation's been handled, nor the ability to monitor particular behavior themselves.
If a new mod team refuses to own their role and put their names on their decisions, I feel this place just sets up again to have more abuse of power. Just my opinion. I honestly don't envy anyone that has to come in here now and keep the peace.

I don't want to make an account suicide thread but I wanted to say goodbye anyway, and this seemed like the best place for me to thank all the cool posters I've been reading over the years. This forum was really something special. Frustrating at times, sure, but the best place I ever found on the internet to discuss nerdy shit and also occasionally, more serious subjects. And I learned a lot around here and met a lot of great people. This whole thing is kinda heartbreaking honestly.

There have been times I disliked how some supposedly very liberal elements of GAF were. The lack of discussion involved regarding Clinton's campaign, insertion of unrelated issues into other threads, and accusing anyone who disagreed on any level in political discourse a racist, diet racist, alt-righter, GGr, or nazi. Same with the very broad strokes put on a lot of people.
Even at it's worse however, I still preferred people trying to be decent human beings to an extreme than the alternative that is starting to crop up now. It's no surprise that words like SJW and snowflakes are starting to be thrown left and right, nor that a lot of GamerGate phrases are being uttered. It's always quite telling about the individuals who do so with such things. Hell, after all my years here I don't recognize a lot of these names of full members I see now, and I'm starting to realise why that may be.
The element of politics is going to be present in gaming. Loot boxes, net neutrality, online harassment, and a broadening market are just a few such topics that will be hard to ignore.
Off topic had its issues (as did Gaming), but it was a very important part of the community for many. I myself was going to use the Art Self Study [OT] thread to help me get back into that hobby, but it's gone.
Despite what may be believed, ELs actions reflect on this community as the owner. Especially when now it's essentially just him and his whim directly while he looks for supporters to bring his fiefdom to heel. His past actions, behavior, and direct handling of other situations such as Amir0x don't reflect well at all. Participating in this community directly benefits him financially and visibly and reflects that behavior to be acceptable.
There are some obnoxious ban threads happening, but at the same time that display of protest seems necessary given what certain elements are coming out. Again, it's not surprising seeing certain language presented during rights protests being used in response to members voicing why they cannot support a community under the NeoGAF banner any longer.
I don't see what's worth defending for the sake of having a special clubhouse that has at this point lost most of the members, developers, and insiders that made it special.
I'll be keeping an eye to see what happens as things develop. I'd hate to just abandon it entirely. But everything that kept me here has been removed, and the community rising out of it doesn't seem to be the most pleasant sort behind their words. I apologise that this post may be a bit jumbled, but it's a lot to cover and process. Best of luck to the good people here, whether they try to weather this out or have/will be moving on elsewhere. Maybe I'll participate soon if things look up.

I think a lot of old time posters on the gaming side are hesitant to pick a side to avoid alienating the winning side of this conflict. I am definitely in this group. It is pretty depressing that this happened during the week when we were supposed to discuss the rebooted Assassin's Creed, the Wolfenstein sequel and Mario Odyssey ... Probably one of the most exciting weeks for gaming releases in 2017 to be honest.
I totally understand why people would choose to leave the site, but it is starting to get really annoying with all the public declarations in separate threads. It is basically spam and the moderation staff should remove those threads imo (along with other OT threads).

Getting rid of OT and banning political discourse is the wrong decision. The OT was just as important as taking side. This is simply punishing the community. OT was moderated well generally, and it made sure to keep sexists, bigots, homophobes etc. out. That was a big part of what made GAF great. Seems fair enough as it's not my place to judge a persons guilt or innocence based on allegations which would be highly difficult to prove in a court of law even at the time it allegedly happened let alone years later.
It's good to have GAF back without most of the overly liberal loons who had ruined the OT forum since Trump got elected and at this stage I'd prefer it if Neogaf was just about games unless a new OT is separated into different sections for politics, race issues etc... so I don't have to see tons of woe is everything whine threads where everyone acts like the end is nigh after every perceived so-called slight as they smugly sit up a bit higher on their self appointed white liberal hero to minorities puritan high horse.

I'm hoping more than anything that the account suicides will be under control soon. Atm it's almost impossible to have a discussion, which only exacerbates the feeling that the forums are a mess.

If people think moderation is arbitrary now, having a completely unaccountable set of moderators working on principles the community can only guess at is not conducive to a friendly, thriving community.
Also, the moderation team should not be beyond reproach. They represent, not run the community, something lost on a few, and especially Evilore himself.
I'll say this until I'm blue in the face: we need more, not less transparency, and actual chain of accountability, and give the community the respect you demand of the moderation team.

I almost wasn't going to make a goodbye post. I was just going to check out, find some other site, and chill there. I have no connection to GAF as a site, I have a connection to GAF as a community, and I'll go where they go. And they've decided to go. Where that is, is still not quite known, but there are ideas out there. I might end up there. Or somewhere else. Anywhere but here. But I wanted to at least have some closure and speak my mind.
And since the site has re-opened, I've witnessed some of the most disgusting, un-gaf like posts I've ever seen. And no, I'm not talking about the account suiciders, they're whatever. I'm talking about the gross posts in threads like the mental health thread. A thread made to make sure people were okay and safe, and was met with replies like might make r/thedonald blush. And then you have the net neutrality thread, which is a political thread. But it's also a gaming thread. What are we to do!? And so what was a normal, good discussion on GAF has now been turned into bickering about if it follows the rules or not and whiny about safe spaces and SJW or whatever garbage buzzwords have invaded this site from the darkest parts of the net.
There's no way to separate politics from every discussion. I'm sorry, but there's just no way to do it. Not unless you want bland, PR filled astroturf advertisement threads as every major OP.
And good luck getting indie devs, corporate community outreach, journalists and major industry people to post on this place as much as they did, after what happened. Something that made GAF special.

This site has always mostly been valuable because of the community threads. And yes, it has been guilty of being an echo chamber while also thankfully being a great place to counter GamerGate bullshit. But the writing has been on the wall for a long time, and the kinds of people who are unrestricted in voicing their true feelings right now have been here just as long.
Personally, I've barely been able to stand coming here for more than a year largely because of various flavors of the following:
- Nonsensical, frightening epithets written by supposedly grown men seemingly curled up naked in a fetal position with their laptops reveling in the suffering of female crime victims as vicarious comeuppance for the loss of their foreskins
- Self-righteous liberals so far up their own ass they can't see their own ignorant generalizations - like where every white Southerner is assumed to be Jerry Falwell on an episode of Hee Haw holding a shotgun in one hand and a bible with a noose for a bookmark - and who think having to eat ramen and use public transit while earning their 2 year sociology degree makes them an expert on economics

- Embarrassing diatribes discussing how someone knows what it's like to be someone they aren't, and when anyone recommends they listen rather than continue talking out of their ass, they respond with a tantrum about McCarthyism
- Apologist apologists apologizing for apologizing for apologists apologizing and unapologetic apologists apologizing for apologetic apologists
- Longwinded, pointless bullet lists written seemingly unironically by self-important blowhards
I'd like to applaud the mods who left, but to some extent I question why they stuck around as long as they did when Malka's behavior has been an open secret for years. His childish tantrums and misogyny have been obvious in nearly every single thread that mysteriously disappears and account permanently deleted. All of these images being posted in this thread of evidence of his behavior is ancient history for a lot of us. I'm frankly disappointed this of all things was the straw that broke the proverbial camel's back.
I look forward to finding out that he's back to modding Mazda's in his Mom's basement once the ad revenue tanks. He doesn't have much choice but to allow the GGers to flood the place now, but if he thinks they are doing anything but hate-posting schadenfreude with ad-block on, he's nuts.
