This is pretty much where Im at right now. The internet social justice movement has done a lot of good and thanks to it a lot of issues which affect me and my relatives directly have been brought to light but there has always been an unnerving element of this movement which has been gathering momentum over the past couple of years and has now culminated into a "guilty until proven innocent" culture.

Heck I saw one person in one thread demanding that even if Tyler is not guilty of the allegations, he should still be compassionate towards the mental state of his accuser which is fucking not on. Im not saying Tyler didn't do it nor that he doesn't deserve the the hate (or at the very least the disgusting posts and abuse of power he has indulged in) but I am asking people to take a deep breathe and back up a bit. This isnt a Palmer lucky situation where the events and motivations are clear, lets wait till we get the full story before we start calling people sexual predators and effectively destroying their livelihoods and families. Ofcoarse, feel free to call out the past disgusting bullshit he has said but be prepared to lay off if he says he regrets saying/doing those things. Lord knows I've done some stupid shit when I was younger.


But with that being said;

Tyler you fucked up.I mean really REALLY Royally fucked up. Shutting OT was never gonna douse the fire, thats like cutting down half a forest to stop a forest fire which burnt down the other half.In closing down the entire OT section you forced people who would have been happy to stay out of it to take a stance on no evidence save for your past posts and more recent bad decisions and forced them to take up arms on past grievances.

Call it what you will "A decision made in passion" or "A miscalculation", its was still a bad move, it only made you look more guilty and not to mention immature.Take a deep breath assess the situation and come up with a better solution than nuking half the forumn.

That insinuates OT makers were affiliated with the developer or PR, which I assure you in most cases was not so. In fact, that's actually insulting as someone who created a few Gaming side OTs.
 
I would offer to buy NeoGAF, rehab its reputation, build a competent mod team, and donate net proceeds to charities this community can get behind, but not enough time, unfortunately, and I don't think Tyler would ever let it go.

Staying up late into the night just trying to figure out if we could even fit the whole thing and then the insanity of the next morning when we posted it. wow, so coincidentally i looked at the amnt of members there were last week, and how much this weekend has made a dent.

total members is down about 5k.

total was ~200k, and now is ~195k (and dropping, though compared to last night, it seems there are less people requesting bans)

i wonder what the daily member sign in is out of that 200k though. like if theres 200k members and 100k sign in each day 5k isn't much of a dent, but if the daily sign in is like 30k, then 5k is pretty significant


i have hope for the new neogaf still. looking forward to its rebirth and revival

No, it’s insinuating the maker has some sort of vested interest in trying to help sell the game. I’m sure money wasn’t passed. Usually. But plenty of gaf posters got invited to “community” events for games to essentially keep them as sweet free marketers.

I can strongly empathize with your situation, as the events being brought into light are eerily similar to something I went through a couple of years back - hooked up with a girl, did a really shitty thing that stepped all over her boundaries (i.e sexual misconduct on my part), we talked it over, fell in love and had a polyamorous and consensual relationship for several years before everything fell apart in a slurry of jealousy, hysteria and old wounds, leaving her in a state where I had been reduced to nothing but an abuser. She called me out on the abuse I had brought on her and tried her best to make sure that everyone knew what I had done and how much she resented me for it.

I totally get the frustration you're feeling and I empathize with that. I get it.

What I don't get it is this fucking milquetoast response and the total lack of responsibility for your own actions. What the fuck man? How much of a spineless piece of shit do you have to be not to take a single ounce of responsibility for your own actions?

I mean, own up to having fucked up. Take a look at yourself and your own behaviour. Try to ask yourself why these things have happened and what you could have done differently instead of immediately going on the defence and blaming everyone but yourself.

Would even a little bit of humility be too much to ask? How about even acknowledging some part of your own guilt? Even if you find things to be taken out of context, exaggerated or whatever, just own up to your mistakes man. Fuck.

Trying to sweep things under the rug by blaming the OT Community, the political landscape and the alleged mental health of the victim and then putting a gag order on the rest of GAF is just as bad. I want no part of whatever thing you are doing anymore.

If any mods read this, please ban me. I'm done with this shit.

It wouldn't be right for Liberty Mutual to say, "We're not having the company Christmas Party, because Christmas parties is what got us into this mess in the first place," or "We're not going to participate in social out reach because social out reach has made us look like hypocrites with these sexual assaults." No, because it's not The Christmas Party or the Social outreach program that's causing the problem: It's bad, hurtful, or illegal decisions made by you or by some former staff members.

You've always had a reputation for making brash decisions, and most of these have not faired well for you. Poorly thought out statements about Amir0x that bent the truth, came too late, and just weren't handled correctly; decisions to ban certain topics from being discussed; decisions to ban certain members or former staff, and scores of others. This, though, is clearly the worst decision and it shows in inability to accept fault. This decisions seems to simply be another projection: "I've made bad decisions in my life and business, and so the business must be punished." That doesn't make any sense, it's selfish and delusional.

You have an opportunity to make the right decision. Obviously you feel like this site is your baby and "it's your's," but this business exists in spite of you, not because of you. It can be hard for a CEO or business owner to give up something that they think is theirs, many CEOs resist this and are befuddled when their board ousts them for a business that they themselves launched. The right thing for you to do would have been to announce that you're taking an indefinite leave of absence from NeoGaf. Revenue from the site would be put into an escrow account to cover expenses and hire staff who would manage it in your absence. A board of staff (moderators, admins) would be formed to hire staff who would manage the site and support the community. Those would be base level decisions which would ensure, at least, some integrity with the site which would keep at least some members around. The site would persist and could possibly bounce back, ultimately you wouldn't be punishing your customers or your business for your own bad decision. Instead, you made the wrong decision with how this was handled and then continually made the wrong decision with how you're going to move forward with this, instead of holding yourself accountable, you're punishing the community that has made your business successful.

It shows an utter lack of self-awareness which then also undermines any integrity that you're trying to preserve against allegations like the ones you're facing.

Nah, it's just outrage culture is pretty ridiculous, i joined the site for games initially then stayed for the OT, I rarely posted in my years here but it was a place I came to get news on tech, games, random stuff.. I stayed away from most if not all political threads, I never really went back and forth with anyone, so really I'd say you couldn't count me as part of a "community" so to speak, I used gaf more as a news aggregator more than anything.. but really.. go ahead and think what you want and make a post about it, because up until now, I never did..

I can just say for me it was done completely out of passion. Video Games were huge stepping stones in my life that pushed me into art, and design. I'm sure like many people on the forum you can trace some of your fondest memories to a dark night and a CQC specialist using his vast array of lethal talents to destroy ketchup bottle after ketchup bottle. No hanging pan, glass of water or hidden frog was safe. I worked on the MGS4 OT for almost a month and I'm sure that seems pathetic and extreme to you and you might be right but it was motivated out of just a shared love for a franchise amongst a group of people I had become quite close to. I was developing the OT in a part of the website that all the mods could see and I remember them coming by and everyone just getting more and more excited. It was truly a labor of love. I went back through and looked at all of it so that I could remember how much this place meant to me. It was nice going through memory lane again to a simpler time when we still raged about exclusives and console dominance and all still loved to hate on Nintendo but... We all understood each other and knew that we all loved this lifestyle. I will miss a lot of you very much. There are names even on the last page that always brought a smile to my face or made me think.

So again I just wanted to say thanks
