The Wii U in a worse or better shape after the PS4 reveal?

I'll let you guys play console fanboys, I'll play and enjoy both

Yep.

Seriously, I just don't care for what looks better and comparing. I like fun games.

That's why I got a 3DS before a PSVita.

Both games look fantastic, and that's a fact.

I appreciate that competition drives innovation, but c'mon.. I didn't buy a Wii U to spite either Sony or MS.

Sony and MS can do whatever the hell they want and if they happen to grab enough of my attention, I will probably get it.

The developers didn't even push current gen tech to its limit to warrant a new one, if you ask me.

This is almost delusional. What games do Nintendo currently have that anyone can point at and say "this will sell consoles"? A HD remake of Wind Waker?

Smash Bros needs to be some seriously hot shit if they want to stay competitive for the next 5 or 6 years at least.

Man, it's amazing what 7 months can do. I thought that Zelda tech demo looked amazing last year and now it looks average in comparison :(

Until we 100% know that footage is rendered in real time on a ps4, the Zelda demo wins as that was at least confirmed running on very early Wii U dev kits and interactive on a Wii U gamepad.

I think the Zelda demo isn't that far behind still.

I don't understand why either of you quoted that post and replied with something that missed his point entirely.

Sony showed a piece of hardware that's probably around $500 that doesn't really have any appealing software that's going to sell anyone on the console.

I honestly think nintendo feels pretty good after watching that.

You need to think about this from a 3rd party perspective.
Ask yourself which version of Fifa (biggest 3rd party game in Europe?) & Call of Duty (biggest 3rd party game in the USA) will gamers want the most? The Wii U version or PS4 version?
Remember, the Wii U versions of those games struggled to compete with the 360/PS3 versions!
The REAL next gen versions of those games as well as Madden,NBA 2k,Assassins Creed,Batman,Far Cry,Final Fantasy,etc... will be HUGE for Sony and Microsoft.

As a Wii U owner the only 3rd party game i'm interested in for the first 6 months of this year is Monster Hunter Ultimate. PS4 multi-plats being a sizable step up from the Wii U versions isn't gonna help that situation.

I didn't buy a Wii U because I don't love Nintendo (I do)

My reluctance is due to a lack of games combined with a good service or online infrastructure behind it.

I'm thinking if Nintendo can just hold out 1 max 2 more graphical generations- then the graphics just won't matter anymore.

Nintendo will hit pixar perfection and that will be that.

How's it out of that running race when we only know of three or four games for PS4 that aren't ports?

Seriously, I don't think this supposed "weakest console" rule of thumb is that legible as a whole but this stuff is way too early to call at this point.
Well because the PS4 will have more 3rd party games compared to Wii U. If the output of Sony's 1st party games are like the PS3 then it'll also have more 1st party games as well.

Nintendo has been looking worse just because they constantly say they're working with third parties for content. Where's all this work? E3 Last year they spent like 10 minutes with the guy from Ubisoft there just to throw compliments, and look at how well that turned out. There's barely any fruits to their labor and regardless of what many of us hope, Nintendo just can't do anything to really appease third parties.
Nintendo's only looking better on the First Party front, but where's all that bank they got from Wii's and DS's? Where did all that surplus go?

obviously worse, it's clear the major third parties and their respective engines are going all in on PS4/720/PC

that said, wii u's problem lies in the fact that it's a totally unappealing product as showcased by its sales; sony or ms don't have a bearing on that

The irony of the video compression stuff is that most of the games I watch people stream online are old Nintendo games on SpeedRunsLive.

I see Nintendo in the same place it's been for close to a decade, if not more: in need of exclusive, 3rd party content. Although it may be shifting to any 3rd party content.

They have enough ammo to push themselves to great levels and need it fast. They really need 2-3 heavy hitters over the next 6 months from their own studios that will convince people they are a viable option. They need to succeed in pushing some 3rd party content to high levels. They need to advertise COD, Watch Dogs and some other heavy hitters. They need to stop being cheap about this. We have are evidence, now, that 3rd parties won't come to play with out financial incentives. They have the 1st mover advantage and the advantage of getting to $200 first and should have 6-10 million of HW sales under their belt by Jan 2014. That should be enough for them to take things under control. Ain't no way Sony will sell more than 3 million of those bad boys @ $400 or $500 a pop. Unless they reveal Playstation Gloryhole. Kinda like PS+ but better.

So, Nintendo is in the same shape as before (weakened and in need of some firm commitment$ to 3rd parties). Luckily, they took the recent sales into consideration and probably pushed some games up (1st party).

I honestly think nintendo feels pretty good after watching that.

What kind of delusions am I encountering here?

Seriously, some of you guys need to think before you post.

What exactly does the Gamepad bring to the table that's so unique and innovative? There hasn't been a single compelling use for it yet in terms of gameplay. Compare that to the Wiimote which was a completely unique experience right out of the gate (and why it took off). The Gamepad has shown no signs whatsoever of it being a game-changer in any way.

Play Zombi U. If you have then I'm calling you out because it uses it well.

Also, Off TV play is fantastic.

I don't think their situation changed at all. Nintendo is likely to enter the holiday period with a 300$ console, while Sony may be aiming for a ~450$ entry price.

So, in the end both are pretty much aiming at a different segment of the market and both will encounter different problems. Sony might struggle with the price (considering it's likely that both competitors will be less expensive; at least if the rumors of 360's hardware power are true), while Nintendo has content problems.

Skyward Sword on Wii was perhaps the worst decision in the past 5 years. There was no reason to release it on a dead machine.
Iwata: We're on track to only ship 10 million systems and 100 million games this year.
Aonuma: ABORT! ABORT! ABORT!

I am calling it: WiiU is the gamecube 2.0. It is going to get shunned by the thrid parties after ps4 and 720 hit.

If it is gamecube 2.0, then sign me up.. some of my favourite games were from that system (Animal Crossing, Mario Sunshine, Zelda: WW, Resident Evil 1 Remake, Ikaruga, Tales of Symphonia...)

We won't really know how third parties feel after they have had lots of time to develop it.. remember, when Sony sold us on the ps3, devs were whining about how difficult it was to develop for it. So, I wouldn't speculate so early into the game :)

Gamecube actually got a lot of support from 3rd parties, especially at launch, the support decreased but continued throughout its life. And there were some 3rd party exclusives too.

This machine is looking to be worse than the cube.

Let's not pretend as if graphics are detrimental to a game. And let's not pretend as if Wii U is dead in the water simply because PlayStation 4 has 8GB of GDDR5 RAM. That claim is based on that technical specification only. Not the games, which should be more important.

But yeah, 8GB of RAM is seriously awesome, and I can't wait to see other games for PlayStation 4. If the games aren't good (though I'm sure they'll be fine), graphics won't help.

You're making me doubt this now... I'm sure it was said during the last 'Wii U Direct'. But need to check that out now.

He said something like we will share stuff from our 3rd party partners at another time, but didn't explicitly say there would be a Nintendo Direct.

Yeah, Skyward Sword sure did a lot to move hardware in 2011, boy howdy.

Didn't the actual game underperform like crazy too? Overall it ended up doing better but Uncharted beat it in the month they both premiered. Considering the pedigree of the series and the difference in userbase size, that's pretty shocking.

Gamecube 2.0 isn't exactly the end of the world here, even though I think that their brand awareness has increased in a big way over the last 6 years to the point where GC 2.0 is the worst case scenario in my opinion. The Gamecube may not have sold 100 million units, but they made a tidy profit during that time period. Worst case, Nintendo gets and stays in the black and uses whatever lessons they have learned to launch a new system in four years. Hopefully this involves expansion of studio acquisitions and such. I really do think that if they can get their marketing in line, the Wii U will be a big success.

It launched against Skyrim and Dark Souls. I love Skyward Sword but it definitely sat on my shelf for months as I obsessed over these other two games. Nintendo should have launched the Wii U with this game in HD.

To the average joe, do these games really look that much better? Is the average consumer really going to want to upload his videos to the web and share them with all his friends?... I almost feel the Wii U has become a more attractive system after the press conference, especially if Nintendo is able to drop the price of the U by the launch of the next-gen consoles.

Yes youtube is full of videos on gaming culture of different sorts.

Walkthroughs and guides are now much better due to videos same can be said for high scores and other things these days which it's necessary to record your if you want to brag about it on the net.

Sony making their own move in this area to make this easy is something as a pc gamer I have to give them credit for. Let me see avoiding all the troubles of encoding and transcoding along with direct support for it, call me there within the first year. MS and nintendo have really lagged behind and this is one area sony will dominate in unless they make big and smart moves to do so.

Like I said, while technically weaker, one wont look bad next to the other.
The graphics leap is getting smaller

This!
both games look amazing in their own way
and to be honest (right now) I prefer the Zelda demo.

The Wii U is more expensive than the PS3 and XBox 360, the games run worse, most third party games aren't even available on it, its online features are extremely basic, and it lacks a community of online players.

What happens with the PS4 and Durango is irrelevant, because the Wii U is a downgrade from the PS3 and XBox 360 in just about every way.

Classic case of people seeing what they want to see.

Yeah okay, where did I say the above footage wasn't ahead? I said Zelda wasnt that far off and it really is quite comparable. And we know one is for a fact running on actual hardware 2 years ago. We don't know if that ps4 game is real time or not. It is at least known the Zelda game was. No one is saying the Wii U is technically on par, we know it isn't, but if the Wii U Zelda game ends up looking like that demo then I think it lessens the hardware gap because both of those demo'd are impressive and above last gen.

I haven't jumped into the current gen yet, but Sony's conference is making me lean toward the Nintendo camp. I was very impressed with the tech Sony displayed, but as the conference went on and they started showing games, the wonder of the graphics faded as I realized that it's just the same genres and games we had last gen, except prettier. How is the new hardware gonna push new gaming concepts? As of now, it doesn't look like it will at all.

Not saying that Nintendo has so far, but just looking at it, it at least has a chance to introduce something fresh with the gamepad.

The conference was sobering, seems like the PS4 is going to be a powerhouse with a lot of neat features.

One thing that's getting me though, is the PS1, PS2, and PS3 all were launched at the dawn of a new entertainment medium.

PS1 - CD
PS2 - DVD
PS3 - Blu-Ray

Many people bought the PlayStation as their first player of said mediums, this helped adoption rate greatly, as it was an excuse for the family/spouse to allow the extra expense.

With the PS4, I could see this hindering the post launch numbers.

In terms of 3rd party support, it's almost certainly worse off. The great 1st party titles will come, but not for awhile. The Wii was able to survive the dearth of AAA third party support because people were taking numbers just to play Wii Tennis and Wii Bowling. So far the Wii U doesn't look like it has the same mainstream/casual appeal.

It's too early to call definitively, but unless Nintendo does something to shake things up, we're probably looking at another Gamecube in terms of sales (and despite my personal affection for the Gamecube, it was not what you would call a runaway success).

everyone knew this about the wii and 360/ps3 also. Didn't change anything because most people got wii or the other.

Anyway, with a price drop and sizable exclusive games by the time 720/ps4 drops. It can be very attractive next to a 400/500 dollar console.

The games only run worse when developers rush a port. When developers actually put effort in, it runs better as seen with Need For Speed.

It lacks a community of online player? That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. Miiverse is a massive showcase of an online player community

Remember, the Wii U versions of those games struggled to compete with the 360/PS3 versions!

You are speaking about sales? Because PS4 and Durango will also struggle to compete with 360/PS3 software in the beginning. That's just bound to happen when the new plattforms have a much smaller user base.

CD's weren't new when Ps1 launched.

And that console was the beginning of Playstation, and a massive success.

Nintendo has always managed to success and most important make money on every console relased ( excluding virtual boy)

WiU is a great machine on its own way , it has respectable spects bust most important it will have the Marios , Zeldas , Metroids that have been always in every Nintendo console.

If there is a console that can keep alive with poor 3rd party suppor is the WiU.

Finally , this is about games no power. Power helps but mostly for 1st party games.

Neither, it is still selling really badly. About the same as Vita, which is bad. And worse than the PS3 and 360 by far.

This announcement should do little to make sales worse or better.

The PS4 hits all the right notes for a next gen release. To me, it's the perfect next gen console hardware-wise.

But I'm more a fan of gameplay and art style than graphics, so in the end my preference depends on the quality of a console's software library.

But once the PS4 and 720 come out, and "market favourite" 3rd parties semi-abandon the Wii U... I'm not sure if it'll end up selling that well. The touch-screen controller sure won't grab the consumer's attention as the original Wii's focus on motion controls (which was kind of a new thing back then). Not to mention the awful and confusing naming of the console itself.

Monolith Soft's and similar companies' games don't really move that many units, sadly.

Regarding online community, he's right, no one plays AC3 online, Black Ops 2 has a tiny online population...some playlists in that game cannot be played as no one is playing. Oh and there is no DLC for Black Ops 2 due to the tiny community.

It made wii u look incredibly bad.

And what's worse is you might be able to buy a ps4 with a cheaper initial investment due to subscription models.

It's almost as if the console came out three months ago and there isn't a massive installbase instantly.

Now I wonder, did this happen to Call of Duty 2 at the 360's launch...hmmmmm

Worse. The game between the WiiU and the PS4 is much bigger than the gap between the Wii and the PS3.

I honestly feel that the PS4 event has actually helped Wii U a lot. Not because it was bad, it was really good, but because:

1) with the focus on social aspects and the optional use of vita/smatphone/tablet as a controller it shows that Nintendo wasn't wrong with Miiverse and the GamePad on Wii U. If those features become more populare it would greatly benefit Nintendo

2) The graphical gap is not as wide as a lot of people tought. Wii U version of multiplat games would certainly be possible. Afterall we are hearing about a lot of crossgen ps3/ps4 titles. if it runs on ps3 it can run on wiiu.

3) watch dogs also on wiiu (maybe this one is a little bit of wishful thinking) is a sign that third parties have not abandoned the ship
