The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt |OT2| Wanted to find Ciri, but everything Gwent wrong

I can't seem to find a straight answer.
Some people seem to claim that if you say "stay" for the first dialogue option and then "go," she'll return later.

Total tangent, but I still don't get if she's allergic to magic or magical potions. Because if she's allergic to magic itself, does that mean she's naturally beautiful, rather than the other sorceresses who have changed their appearance?
I did exactly that, so fingers crossed! And yes, she's a natural.

I think a lack of direction and perhaps too open a world. In the case of Mass Effect everywhere felling lifeless. It's hard to really pin point it. I haven't ever been huge on rpgs but every now and then one has grabbed me, FFX for example. A lot of the Zeldas too. Is it worth taking a gamble on this for me? Realise without knowing me it's hard to say but really any input will be helpful
I feel pretty confident saying that isn't a problem in this game. The world is joined together by a fantastic lore, and everything feels pretty lively. Quest design and sidequests are incredible, and the open world really serves the game rather than detracting from it. However...you might be overwhelmed by the size...

Hot damn.

If too open a world bothers you, then that doesn't bode well. Mass Effect 3's world is positively claustrophobic in comparison. There's direction if you're willing to focus your efforts on the main questlines and those sidequests you find appealing. Most of the central stuff is quite engaging and well written. But if you're easily distracted by the many points of interest and small sidequests, you may find the scope of the game spilling far beyond your liking and interest.

Haven't played for two days because of the XP bug. It's been a while since I actually missed a game ahah. Can't wait for the patch.

Does that mean yen would look like one of the crones if she didnt use magic to alter her appearence?

Ha, slightly conflicting ideas but thanks chaps. I think what I'll do is take a punt on it a little down the line when it's not full price. Hard to resist right now though as I need a new game

For a super lazy response, you might consider reading these:

Kotaku Primer
Polygon Primer

That's what I did before I got too far in the game, and I think it helped immensely. As for a less lazy response, I see you already got some responses, but here goes anyways:

Thanks for providing those links. As someone who only just got round to starting the game yesterday but haven't played the previous games, this will be really useful. I'm only an hour or so in to Wild Hunt but I'm fucking in to it already.

She does have that great moment at the start of act one in The Witcher 2 where while holding up the butterfly barrier she spaces out and nose bleeds, but that might be just due to spell intensity.

You people have me questioning my romantic endeavours now.

Wild Hunt is really just split between Yennefer and Triss, and I think it's a way of playing to both fans of the games and the books. Geralt has had romance with Triss, and Triss is madly in love with Geralt, but in the books Yennefer is ultimately Geralt's soul mate. With amnesia hitting at the start of the games and Yennefer nowhere to be found, Triss is is his canonical interest (suffer, Shani fans). So she does, to an extent, exploit his amnesia to hook up.

Wild Hunt deals with this pretty directly, both Yennefer and Triss acknowledging everything that's happened, and ultimately leaving it up to the player to decide which is their waifu.

Well the crones are on a particular level of grotesque. So, no I don't think she'd look like that. Perhaps "plain" or more on the side of ugly, but I don't think she's going to look like this (spoiler).
No, just an ugly human, I think the books implied she was hunchbacked? It's been a while, kind of forgot.
Reading them right now. I think the passage you're thinking of is Geralt's personal musings. He thinks she might have been hunchbacked, but he can't be sure of course. It's safe to guess that she wasn't probably a knock-out beauty though.

Happy to help! They really got me started and helped me dive even deeper into the story and lore.

Sorry. Hope I didn't sour you on it too much. Make no mistake, I absolutely love this game. And it does a reasonably good job of making the world feel... lived in. But some of your pet peeves just make me a little bit reticent to wholeheartedly recommend it to you.

I have a question regarding romances and Kaer Morhan.

Is it possible to just romance one of the girls but send both of them to Kaer Mohran?

:|

How hunchbacked are we talking here? :|
Now, now, we're only talking outer beauty, it's inner beauty that matters right?
(Plus she's gorgeous now anyways, and Geralt loves her in spite of his suspicion that she was a hunchback in the past :p)

Supposedly, yes. I haven't confirmed it myself, but people say they've done it.

^ Thanks a lot again.

Sorry, one last question. If this world of monsters and magic mixed in with the normal world (how long ago was this?), why is there war between humans? You would think the north and south would unite.

They answered you already, but I wanted to add that well, in the books monsters aren't that common In the games their numbers are exaggerated for gameplay reasons, to have enemies to slay.

So about Yennefer's quest

The Last Wish, I been reading what Others wrote when they turn down Yen. I turned her down, told her i dont love her anymore. People say she teleports you to the middle of a lake and is mad at you? She did neither at me. She was just sad and regretted taking away the wish for me. That is all. Odd how others got something different.

You kind of had to goad her into further confrontation while she's working on her teleporter.

Yes, that's how it went for me, but I'm not sure of the exact conversational choices that will make this happen.

Treated Triss nicely but didn't pursue romance, made Geralt romance Yennefer. Had both Triss and Yennefer at Kaer Morhen.

Geralt knew, but he doesn't care, and I can live with that.

Cool. I just found that revelation to be simultaneously hilarious and shocking.

Nah that's cool man. I kinda had a feeling these things might be the issues. I'll get to it in the future and who knows, May end up loving it. Cheers for the help though.

I was on my way to do the Griffin Gear Scavenger quest line, climbing this cliff. I found a Place of Power on top of a cliff, turned my camera back in the opposite direction and was greeted with this view. Just wanted to share with you all.

Yeah, I dont know if its ever made clear. Book Spoiler:
Triss was naturally good looking. However, she was burned beyond recognition at Sodden Hill and her body/sight was restored using the "highest magic".

I think I've got this no EXP bug. Just went through Get Junior and a bit of Sigi Reuven's Treasure and I don't think I got any EXP from it, though I was still getting 25-50 EXP here and there from Gwent and a couple of other side missions. I'm Lv 15 doing Lv 12ish quests and getting nothing from them.

Oh ho. That's interesting. Wonder how she was able to withstand that given her allergy. Guess I need to keep reading!

It's implied that she's allergic to magic potions, If it was just magic in general then would she not be able to cast spells herself?

Also there is a contradiction with her potion allergy in books compared to the games. For example one of the very first quests in The Witcher 1, was creating a potion for Triss to heal her from injuries she got when Kaer Morhen was attacked in the beginning of the game.

when you guys say you're reading the book.....what book are you talking about? There's a witcher series book line?

Yes, the games are based on a series of novels and short stories by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski.

The books follow the journeys and tales of Geralt. Which is why the Witcher games have such a well established world and lore, due to the books it has to draw from.

AW YISS, gwent tourney defeated.

Also the Triss card is straight up worse than Yen. Whoever made this game in universe is a dick.

I am enjoying this game a lot.

Cutscenes and storytelling is so much more compelling and enjoyable than Dragon Age. The facial animations add so much genuine emotion, unlike the stiff faces of most other games (lip syncing seems a tiny bit off, or somewhat wooden with some words)

Combat is serviceable, though I haven't played much of it. Though I wish one day we'd get a Souls-lite sort of gameplay in a big RPG like this. Are there any RPGs with great combat anyway?

I did a sidequest regarding a haunted well. Really liked it. I enjoy that so far, quests are easy to follow and understand. I am not overwhelmed like in Dragon Age with a bunch of meaningless fetch quests. I will slowly take on quests as they come, and seeing as they are apparently mostly done well, I'm excited for it.

One thing, I wish I could talk to people while on my horse. I hate getting off just to talk to someone. The world is so vibrant. It's so nice to play an RPG with such a vibrant world.

Are all the states connected? Or do you have to fast travel to them, like in Dragon Age Inquisition?

I love facial animations in this game. I am especially impressed with the variety of all the subtle emotions you can see in the character's faces, and especially eyes! Eyes have a believable depth to them, it's great. I am so, so glad the tech went far enough for games to be able to deliver this - without it, the story wouldn't be half as resonant as it is now. I have my suspicions that people who didn't connect with Geralt simply couldn't, due to the lack of facial expression.

The zones are separated and you have to fast-travel between them. CDPR clearly had a story they wanted to tell in this specific regions and since staying true to the source material was a factor too, they didn't fill out the whole map of the Continent. Don't worry though, each of them is definitely big enough on their own.

Lastly, I need to try and get some background info and past characters and games and stories. Can anyone help (Witcher 1/2 spoilers I guess):

Is Ciri actually adopted? She has white hair, which made me think she was Geralt and Yen's.

Where did Ciri go?

What is her Father's history with Geralt and Yen?

Right now, there's a war between the powerful South, and which North army? So far, they are just attacking villages in the way. Does Geralt not care? He's not involved in the war, right? It's just a backdrop, or did he have a part in it? Is the war simply over land, or does it involve the resulting presence of magic/monsters?

What is Geralt even doing at the beginning of the game? He's tracking Yen, but why and how? What led him to that situation, and why is he so close to finding her? What does he want? Where was Yen going in that opening cinematic?

1)
Yes, Ciri is adopted, neither Geralt nor Yen can have biological children. Her hair color is not something she takes from Geralt, just her own genealogy. It's hard to deny though that the author of the original books did want to connect the three of them through the color symbolism.

2)
She went to another world/dimension, as she's wont to do.

3)Her father and Geralt's history is quite complicated, so I will just give you cliff notes. SPOILERS from the books!

- Young Emhyr, Ciri's biological father, is exciled from Nilfgaard after assasination of the previous emperor (his own father). A sorcerer curses him so that each day he turns into an ugly monster.

- One day he saves the life of the king of Cintra (a Northern Kingdom neighboring with Nilfgaard). Greatful king offers him payment in form of the Law of Surprise ("You'll give me something you already have but don't know about" or some variations of that). It turned out to be the king's unborn daugher, Pavetta.

- King dies and Emhyr (assuming the name Duny) turnes out in Cintra 15 years later to collect his prize. Pavetta falls in love with him, but their relationship is secret.

- Pavetta's mother, Queen Calanthe, hires Geralt to get rid of the monster that haunts the halls of the royal castle in Cintra. But instead of killing Duny, Geralt lifts the curse off him. As a reward for saving his life, lifting the curse and allowing Duny and Pavetta to get married, Geralt invokes The Law of Surprise again. Yep, you guessed it, Pavetta was pregnant. Geralt is to return to Cintra in six years to take the child with him and make him/her a witcher. Of course, nobody suspects then that it would be a girl, Ciri.

- Sometime later, Pavetta and Duny are lost at the sea and presumed dead. Ciri miraculously didn't go with them. Much later it's revealed that the ship wreck was Duny/Emhyr's plan. He learnt the throne in Nilfgaard was up for grabs again and he intended to fake his own death and take Ciri with him. Pavetta sensed that something was wrong, sent Ciri away and got killed by her husband for her trouble. Emhyr later claims that it was an accident, but her death was awfully convenient anyway. The connection between Duny and Emhyr had to be kept secret.

- Geralt turnes up in Cintra like he promised, but has no intention to take the child (he doesn't even realize that it's a girl). Even after he meets Ciri in person sometime later, he still wants to defy destiny and thinks that she's better suited to being a princess than the witcher.

- Nilfgaard invades Cintra. While it's not a sole reason for invasion, it is heavily implied that Emhyr (now the Emperor) did it in large part to take Ciri again. The whole kingdom of Cintra is destroyed and annexed, the capitol slaughtered, Calanthe commits suicide when the castle gets sacked and Ciri barely escapes with her life. Only 11 at that time, she's left to wander the war ravaged countryside until Geralt finally finds her again and this time takes her to Kaer Morhen for the witcher training.

- Emhyr basically continues to try to invade the Northern Kingdoms again and again, sending his spies and hunters to capture Ciri at the same time. The whole Saga of books detail those events and LOTS of shit happens in-between. Emhyr destroyed fuckton of lives while attempting to get his daughter (and he wanted to make her his queen at the time, Elven prophecies and whatnot - he backed away from that at the last moment). Geralt, Yennefer and their friends suffered a lot during the war. So when Emhyr meets Geralt again, reveals himself as Dun, wants to take his daughter away from him and orders him and Yen to commit suicide - Geralt is suitably unimpressed with all this shit.

4)
Geralt cares, but he tries to remain neutral, like witchers are supposed to be. Giving his experience with Nilfgaard, I doubt he's such a big fan of the Empire, but he's but a simple witcher and has little influence over the course of war (theoretically, anyway. Geralt knows a lot of powerful people, more than capable of changing the world's history)

5)
Geralt and Yen got separated before the start of the first game and he loft his memory. Once he regained it in the end of The Witcher 2 and learned about her whereabouts, he immediately stated to look for her

So whats the deal with armors, I only found light and medium ones so far. Are there cloaks and hoods in here, and what armor is the best way to go

kind of disappointed all the sex scenes so far follow the same template.
The two main love interests don't.
It's implied that she's allergic to magic potions, If it was just magic in general then would she not be able to cast spells herself?
I guess then it has something to do with the magic being used on herself. So maybe she could throw a fireball at someone else, but she can't cast a healing spell on herself? Not sure.
