All of that backround on Triss really helps to flesh out as to why she was so composed when you meet back up with her in W3. She knew she was in the wrong, even jokes about taking advantage of Geralt.

True that. She definitely understands that the jig is up, because now Geralt remembers once more and the game makes it evident that their relationship should be over for all intents and purposes.

Yennefer also makes a few references when the game begins and those can confuse or frustrate newcomers. But these snide comments are not coming from " just some jealous person".

Imagine living decades in a marriage and then suddenly losing your memory as a result of trying to save your wife from some horrible situation. And then another person, who happens to be a close family friend and essentially a sister figure to your daughter, takes advantage of the situation.

It is hard to dislike Triss but she is captive to her emotions and desires. One can't but feel sorry for her.
To lose her status in the royal court is a tough pill to swallow. When she meets Geralt in Novigrad the situation is extremely tough as Triss is trying to stay alive at that point.

Book readers will likely consider Yen canon for good reason, and the game openly embraces this, but it also explores the option that she's not and that Triss is a viable option. The idea that the romance is dead between Yen and Geralt due to everything that's happened is plausible.

XP bug be damned. I'm going to push through and finish the game. It's too damn good.

I hit lvl 22 last night and I'm in Skellige. I think I'll be okay from here on out. It's seems the XP big is really affect Novigrad quests.

I feel the same, its not like at this lvl we cant do the majority of the content. ill either use the trainer if its really neeed (although I hear the major story beats give a ton of xp and those arent affected, and I also have a bunch of contracts also, which also arent affected) to get the "missed" levels (mainly to use the higher tier sets) or use the bank loan method to get xp, and I think you can also get xp from brothels?

GerAlt-Right. Ciriously.
for those of you who decide to venture up the mountains in Skrillege. SAVE OFTEN. The game is going to do everything in its power to kill you in the stupidest way possible.

Ugh... when you put it that way, I almost want to load up my save from before I finished
"Now or Never" and let Triss go
.

But, no. I'll see #TeamTriss to the end of this play through.

If people don't pay a lot of attention during Witcher 2 it can be hard to fully understand the situation. How Geralt sacrificed himself for Yennefer, how they spent an eternity in Avalon after they were saved by Cirilla and so on.

Yennefer is his one true love and Cirilla is the adopted daughter who traveled through space and time in order to bring them back from the dead All this is kind of lost in the trilogy, because it is only referenced and you can read about it via lore entries. But all these relationships exist and they have substance. Yennefer is not your run of the mill loving wife though, she is a powerful sorceress who is involved in politics.

Triss is not as dynamic as a character. In the games she is somewhat sympathetic but also a bit selfish. Triss was there at Kaer Morhen when Ciri grew up. A sister figure of sorts, she knows about Avalon and how grandiose the story is but kind of disregarded that when Geralt lost his memory. I don't blame her for loving him and seizing the opportunity when it presented itself but she is the definition of a third wheel. Without the tragic events that occurred in the Hanged Man's Tree, when Geralt surrendered willingly in order to save Yen, Triss would not even be in the picture.

Thank you for this perspective, it was something that I was lacking. I haven't read the books so Yen was pretty much an afterthought for me after playing Witcher 2, with Triss being a huge part of that game. Currently I'm doing the Brothers in Arms quest line, and I'm still trying to learn Yen's personality. She came off as a bitch in the beginning; not so much any more though. Also, hearing the
Jarls daughter whom I rescued
(can't remember her name) constantly mention my relationship with Yen, or even random people mentioning us ("Oh, the ballad about the witcher and the sorceress, that is YOU!?"), puts things into perspective as well.

I found that someone has released a mod on nexusmods that fixed the exp problem temporarily.

I'll be going with this until the patch comes out. So much happy about not having to worry about this anymore.

It is viable within the context of the trilogy I suppose but even then all these events are referenced. I don't see how Geralt could reject Yennefer after recovering his memory in Witcher 2. To finally remember the events at the Hanged Man's Tree, what happened to your daughter, all the drama before Avalon and so on is a rather big deal.

It wouldn't be a stretch to entertain the idea that Geralt chooses to concentrate solely on Ciri, because he has spent long periods apart from Yen. That being said, riss is just not a person of interest outside the time they spent together in Flotsam when everything was foggy. But for players it is different, because we only experience this short period.

I told her
I loved her cuz I wanted to make sexy time.
Looking back, that was probably a mistake.

I should probably be writing notes on what NOT to do on my second playthrough

You know, this yen and triss topic is a very interesting one but I think that unfortunately they changed the way the characters look in this game (compared to 2) and triss isn't as pretty for some reason... Though I still love er... But just not as much as Yen. I want em both. Lol.

I've been saving myself for yen on this playthrough.

Ugh... when you put it that way, I almost want to load up my save from before I finished
"Now or Never" and let Triss go
.

Why?

she wants to let that history go because it's her understanding that no matter how much she loves you and wants to be with you she will only get her heart broken because Yen is Geralt's 'soulmate' and Geralt will likely choose her. In fact Geralt did break it off with Triss between 2 and 3 thinking it was the right thing to do. Then you do all of the shit with Triss and can have your Geralt realize that despite your ties with Yen, you still have gone through too much with Triss to let go.
The game even (yen quest spoiler)
lets you break off the bond with Yen if you want to be with Triss
.

Just because two people have history it doesn't mean you can't move on. Triss loved Geralt in the books too, so it's not like she saw her opportunity to swoop down post-everything.

If you're arguing for canon strictly from the books then go ahead, but really there shouldn't be discussions of what is canon until you finish or get far enough in this game to understand the reasoning and motivations between every character

don't know.. the game is way too much on geralt x yen... dude goes into carpet mode the very moment he sees her (and it's the reason why I choose triss).. but at the same time, yen and geralt have the most robust interactions.. the game is choke full of them remembering stuff they did together, while with Triss we don't even know what exactly happened between them between the second and third episode.. that without counting all the teasing geralt receives about his relationship with yen...
I would have preferred a much equal ground between the two

No problem. We all make our own decisions but for me it is impossible to even consider Triss as a viable wife figure when there are so many touching moments in the novels between these other characters.

For example taking just one moment from the Blood of the Elves

Ciri sniffed

"I've already seen a war" she wispered. "I don't want to see another. Never. I don't want to be alone again. I don't want to be frigthened. I don't want to lose everything again, like that time. I don't want to lose Geralt....or you. I don't want to lose you. I want to stay with you. And him. Always"

Ciri sniffed again. Yennefer coughed quietly, put down the scissors and comb, got to her feet and crossed over to the window. The ravens were still croaking in their flight towards the mountains.

These things are always back on my mind so it kind of renders the events at Flotsam and other places completely moot.

I didn't like how much the game felt like it was forcing me to pick yen. I still went Triss but there were many interactions where I was like "WHERE IS MY DIALOGUE OPTION FOR SAYING THAT I'M WITH TRISS".

There were many moments in Skellige after I had already decided to be with Triss that felt really off because people were still acting like I had googoo eyes for Yen and I had no way of telling them how it was.

And yeah in general the Triss interactions felt weaker while the Yen ones were a lot deeper. I think it's because Triss had a million things to worry about while Yen was focused on Geralt and Ciri.

Plenty of people mad at CDPR because they basically threw Triss to the side in this game just because Yen and Ciri were the focus. Wasn't necessary.

So if you want to choose the one that's more prominent in the game instead of
disappearing for huge chunks
, go with Yen.

Once you begin Act III
you can start telling people you're with triss
. And it makes sense since the personal quests are around Act I and depending on when you do them the game didn't take into account you could do them prior to story missions, so it went with the default.

The Possession quest in Skellige is really awesome.

I love how Cerys and Geralt's guess about who's haunting Udalryk and their attempt to exorcise the brother's spirit completely and irreversibly backfires. In tougher cases, a witcher needs to do a lot of detective work, and I'm glad there is a case where Occam's Razor proves false. BABY IN THE OVEN, FUCKIN' GOAT!

Yen's at the forefront because she's not some random squeeze with an infatuation for Geralt but instead someone deeply important to his past, and the one he'd forged a deep connection with more than any other. Even if you're #TeamTriss Yen's presence holds a lot of weight, as she cares for Ciri just as much as Geralt, and both this task along with the history they share must be confronted.

Yen's importance has always been supporting, whereas Yen in this case is integral to many events.

Regarding Triss.

Having Triss struggle after the second game and then possibly having her witness the reunion between Geralt and Yennefer is tragic but extremely good for story telling purposes. I've always seen her as a character who just wants to be loved. She tries to engage in the world of politics as well but it always feels as if she just isn't cut from the same cloth as Yennefer.

It makes sense for
Yennefer to have a bigger part in the game. She is Ciri's mother after all. Maybe it wasn't necessary though.

Most complaints aren't because they feel Triss deserved the screentime Yen had. Complaints are that the way they wrote the game
Triss disappears for chunks of them and/or you have little interaction with her
. Saying "she deserved more screentime" doesn't translate to "take away from Yen's".

edit: and it's not a random squeeze either. She's been there since the short stories as well lol.

Have I mentioned that the combat in this game is the most broken piece of shit fucking thing in existence?
yes, I have. Repeatedly.
It is soooo bad. So I was working my way up a clif on Skrillege with very tight walkways and there are of course flying enemies show up forcing me to go into combat mode. Being as careful as possible knowing full well that the combat was going to try its hardest to fuck me I was able to shoot the enemies down and very carefully hit them. Geralt reverts to his no combat state and I go about picking up the loot in the nanosecond before I pick up the last one Geralt goes into combat mode and ends up performing a roll....right off the cliff.

Come on GAF, seriously defend this piece of shit combat system...

You could have not spammed X, or hit X and then triangle. Or used the horn to knock them out of the air. The transitions from combat to non-combat isn't really a complaint about the system itself. It's not great, but it's serviceable. Room for depth and preparation, even if the base mechanics aren't the best.

Hahaha, I just did this last night.
When it came to that timed choice, I LOL'd out loud and just said Fuck it! I thought I was going to immediately regret that decision, too, but no.

Consistently amazed by the quality of the side quests. Not to mention how they can tie into the main story quests.

I'm going to be honest. I threw the baby in the oven, but reloaded after they didn't explain what we threw in the oven, because I thought we threw someone else's in there.

finished "the last wish" quest...
sure the developers didn't hide at all what they consider the canon couuple..too bad i had to be sincere since i already choose triss ..felt a bit like a bastard
It literally IS the canon couple, but that doesn't matter, because you're playing a fanfic.

Imagine living decades in a marriage and then suddenly losing your memory as a result of trying to save your wife from some horrible situation. And then another person, who happens to be a close family friend and essentially a sister figure to your daughter, takes advantage of the situation.
It's not like she had to seduce him. It's unreasonable to expect her to be able to resist the constant advances of a person she's in love with.
She had to know that it's not right and that it can't last, because it never does, but making mistakes is what these characters do best.

The idea that the romance is dead between Yen and Geralt due to everything that's happened is plausible.
It could be made plausible if CD Projekt's had better writers, but according to the game, it's only possible if you choose to alter the story with a single dialogue option and decide that the whole relationship was nothing but a magical curse; and that's just lazy deus ex machina.

That costume was so disappointing. Not unexpected, but still.
So here's a person who wouldn't be caught dead wearing a low-cut dress, proudly presenting her sizable assets. CD Projekt's treatment of Triss is simply embarrassing.

Perhaps you shouldn't engage in a fight on the side of a cliff? Or you could have just, you know, ignored the enemies and moved on? Also, you know he doesn't roll unless you tell him to, right? Maybe don't roll yourself off the edge of a cliff? I could be a dick and just say you need to "git gud" because the combat takes all of 1 hour to get the hang of, but this isn't a Bloodborne thread. Is it as good as Rocksteady's Batman games? Hell no. Is it as bad as you make it sound? Heeeeeellll no.

Once I figured out the quick dodge, and when to use it, the combat actually became fun. You have to chose which direction Geralt dodges, just spamming quick dodge doesn't do you any good because your most likely dodging into the enemies, not away from them. I rarely use the roll dodge, mainly because it takes stamina.

What bothers me most is that there is no real sensible way to say "No, I am in love with Triss" to Yen. I mean, when you decide the fate of your relationship with Triss, both options are to a great amount sensible. However, if you come to Yen, you miss that kind of sensibility.

I hope you guys who keep using "canon" and "fanfic" are saying it because the author of the books doesn't recognize the games as canon therefore the whole game is technically fanfic.

And not because you're trying to emphasize that your Geralt and his choices are canon.

If you wanna talk in-game canon, the only time that matters is at the beginning of the next game when the game basically tells you what's the canon of the previous game. If necessary. Won't be with this being Geralt's last game.

I am going with Yennefer in this game, but I absolutely find Triss to have a much more attractive character. Yennefer seems like a powerful woman, but I prefer Triss warmth to be honest. But in terms of Geralt, obviously Yennefer is central to his story and I want to see where it goes. I also like the fact that he is paired with a strong, independent woman. I do like Triss though.

I finished the game. If anything, I would have liked a big Triss vs Yennefer vs Geralt moment, dishes flying, and maybe some more funny digs here and there. But they chose the "easy way" where they barely interact with each other and easily accept whatever you choose. I suppose otherwise it would be more complex (and expensive), as they would have to do more variations of each scene, depending if you romance one, the other or even none of them.

I sort of enjoy the tension when Geralt and Yennefer interact with one another. You just understand that there is real depth there.

It is a mature relationship with a history and not just a cookie cutter run of the mill romance that we see too often in video games. It is quite refreshing. Yen is confident and driven by various goals while she also loves Geralt deeply.

With Cirilla the dynamic was bound to be interesting as well. Most likely Geralt has this idea in his head that he is trying to find her daughter, the young ward, but she is now a grown woman with a destiny of her own.

We'll have to see what Cyberpunk is, because if it ends up being another male-starring game there's a part of me that doubts the next game will star Ciri. Not because female protagonist, but because it's a male power fantasy game series in a sex-filled universe.

We'll see though, we're a long time away.

you should be able to romance Lambert, the sparks are flying every time they're together

I don't have any faith in CD Project Red being able to pull off a video game with a female protagonist. Maybe if they were to do a Bayonetta RPG.

Lambert is too distracted by Eskel's hourglass figure to pay attention to Geralt.

I don't think the issue would be that they can't write a strong female protagonist in the witcher universe, because most of the powerful main players in this world are women.

The issue would stem from any nudity and relationship plots. I think it's much more likely that if they ever come back that they'll do another character considering
how unlike the other two games, the endings varied wildly in this one

They're basically trapped between a rock and a hard place. If they have a game with Ciri in the future and they show ANY nudity from her, or make her say lesbian/bi, you can bet jurassic that there will be complaints from somewhere.
