Okay so I jumped back in after playing Splatoon for a week and I'm completely getting shat on by this fucking Griffin. I guess I don't really know how to fight beyond light-heavy-roll shoot crossbows so I'm looking for some good general tips, or maybe some specific ones, I don't know.
In terms of fighting, what's going on? Can I trap this griffin in a stagger? My AI buddy doesn't seem to do shit so I can't really distract it that way. I can roll out of most attacks fairly easily but Geralt can't seem to close the distance fast enough to get more than one or two light stings in, even with the Thunderbolt active. Do I have invincibility frames? How should I be treating this?
A few tips:
1. Short dodge should be your primary evasion tactic against monsters. Block/parry for humans/non-humans. Roll is for creating distance and larger area monster attack evasion, but costs a bit of stamina, so don't spam it.
2. Heavy attacks are slower windup but have more range. A lot of bigger, powerful monsters can be chipped with it by keeping distance via short dodge and rolls with a heavy thrown in when they give an opening. Then after you know their patterns/openings you can go heavy, light, light, heavy for good damage.
3. You do WAY more damage from behind an enemy than from head on. If you get behind an enemy you can get a critical hit streak going that will crush their life bar. This is essential on any strong monster in my opinion, otherwise your weapon will start to wear down mid-fight.
4. Use all the tools at your disposal. Oils are very useful against strong monsters and, to me, the entire point of investigating a hunt before doing it is to have an idea what you're likely to fight so you go in with the right oil on your blade. Beyond that every monster has a sign and a bomb they're weak to. These generally make sense in relation to their species, for example fliers tend to be weak to Aard, the telekinetic wave, as it can catch in their wings and drive them to the ground, giving you free hits. Additionally, flying enemies like the griffin, draconids, etc. can be taken out of the sky with a crossbow bolt, leaving them stunned on the ground for a brief time.
5. Quen is your best friend. In an ideal world when fighting a powerful monster you want to bounce back and forth between the sign they're weak against and Quen. Against wraiths for example get a Quen up before engaging, drop down a Yrden field to fight them in, and when you take a hit create distance with roll, use caution to evade until you have Quen back up, and get Yrden down shortly thereafter. This is why Tawny Owl is an underrated potion. It helps stamina regen by a nice amount and you get it very early in the game. Until you have both Swallow and Thunderbolt I'm a fan of TO in my quick select, and even sometimes using it over 'bolt if it's an enemy I'd value signs over straight damage for (like wraiths/specters as they're easy in a Yrden but nearly invulnerable outside of one).
I've found the combat to be very enjoyable, a nice mix of strategy and quick twitch gameplay.
