The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt |OT2| Wanted to find Ciri, but everything Gwent wrong

That's what bugs me. If I don't draw frost, I'm done. I guess it'll get better once I'm not playing with Geralt's base northern realm deck for the most part.

A spy works wonders against them. So long as you have a single numbered card you can eke out a final round victory against them, because most will have completely burned through their entire decks by that point.

Currently polling second in Australia's federal election (first in the Gold Coast), this feral may one day be your Bogan King.
That is what scares me...since I'm nearing 40 hours just in Velen already, and have a million contracts and quests to do still. I keep hearing that Skellige is just as packed with content and I'm in awe of that.

I'd say so far it has less on the principle that it's largely made up of water and far more mountainous, and thus the flatter landmass of Velen + Novigrad is primed for more questing and content. But it's still far denser with questing and stuff to do than I expected. It's also a bit deceptive I think; the "find Ciri" arcs in Velen and Novigrad have you undertaking a huge number of quests to get results, yet the Skellige equivalent is very, very short and straight forward. Instead it seeds its own separate, seemingly optional quest line that spirals into its own epic adventure.

Im in skellige now for a few hours and I'm just shocked and surprised that it has pretty much as much content as the entirety of Velen/Novigrad.

It's a good thing though, that means more to do.

So there I am helping Dandelion
set up his Cabaret
and helping Zoltan
collect Gwent cards
...suddenly,
serial killer murder mystery
.

This game. This fucking game!

I agree, would have been great if you could at least make notes on the world map, that way you could mark all the gwent players you beat and which city offers the best loving.

That's a feature that is sorely lacking in pretty much all open-world games, but one we'll likely never get. Typing on a gamepad blows, and it's doubtful any developer would spend the time adding it just for the PC.

Probably a stupid question, but after I make a potion once mediating will always refill them? The game keeps refilling my stock of Swallow and a few other things somehow.

As long as you have hard booze in your inventory it will refill all potions and bombs.

Potions/bombs - yes.

It doesnt really do a very good job at explaining shit like that.

Several hours in, and I've only just realised that this isn't a true open world in the style of the Elder Scrolls games, but lots of big sections like Dragon Age 3.

My fault for assuming the former I suppose, but I can't help being a bit disappointed. I was looking forward to making huge treks across the map later in the game!

Its really nothing like Dragon age and more similar to a fully expanded Skyrim which splits the world between the inland and the Solstheim isles. Dragon Age is split up between ~16 different zones. This game is essentially 2 massive maps with a short tutorial area and a few instanced areas that are strictly for story progression. One thing this has over both of them is that cities, interiors, caves, ruins ect are not instanced and you can seamlessly move between them and the open world.

Yeah, hope I get more soon. It's always fun when I use decoy to pull the opponent's spy into my deck.

Reached Novigrad a while back and the crashes are just CRAZY right now.
(Have latest gen i7, 16GB Ram and a 970).

A few seconds ago it crashed in a way I have never seen a computer do before, it almost turned OFF my computer. Screen froze, sound kept going, then screen went black and slowly the fan slowed down and finally my monitor went into sleep mode. Ctrl-Alt-Del did nothing.

Metroidvania

People called Romanes they go the house?
IMO, either Skellige has too much water, or the boat moves too slowly.

That, and all of the water question marks have been smuggler's crates, which, all suck to get, because water movement sucks, the crates are all surrounded by drowners, and the drowner pheromones get cleared from my buff bar whenever I go in water.

I'm amazed at the Gwent love. I've played two match, the first tutorial and some random match. I was destroyed in the second match and thought "meh, forget this mini-game".

I'll give it an honest try in my second play-through.

Gwent is great. If you google around (or look at the Gwent OT here on GAF) there are some basic tips and tricks for how to play. Like only stick to the minimum 22 unit cards, as it means you'll be more likely to be able to draw your special/hero cards. And play your spies on the first round, to get card draw and potentially bait your opponent into passing early (or if they won't pass early, just concede the round and then win the next two). You can also use stuff like Decoy or the Medic ability that some cards have to repurpose enemy spies as your own, too.

FYI: When you're underwater, you can one-shot drowners with a crossbow.

Yeah, alchemy and crafting stuff is a little confusing at first, but I think I'm getting the hang of it.

Doesn't have to be alcoholest, any "strong alcohol" (which seems to be most all of them).
Man that's awesome. Makes me much more likely to use potions. I have that weird video game habit where you "save" stuff and just end up not using it enough before the end of the game.

Please tell me Ciri's quests get longer?

So far they have been laughably short, the first took like 10 minutes but the one after that took literally a minute at most.

Amazing character and I love the way she fights so I'm pretty disappointed so far.

Yeah, the alchemy part threw me off at first. I thought that you needed to brew each concoction again and again with the same materials to replenish them. But apparently if you have one Alcohol item that will replenish every empty inventory slot when you meditate.

At least, that's how I think it works.

They made it clear her missions are pretty short.

Yep

Becomes are less daunting after realizing that, especially with how many crafting ingredients you amass

The "An Eye for an Eye" quest was super frustrating on Death March. I feel like they need to upgrade a certain NPC's durability for this level.

All the ones I've done have been less than five minutes long. Have mostly enjoyed them so far, except for the last one I did which had some janktastic horse riding and vague objective directions.

Wow, I should have followed everyone's advise about the Hattori sword last night.
It was 3 levels higher than I was and only gave me a +2 to damage.

"A SWORD TO KILL THE GODS" my arse!

Yeah, the "it's not an open world" stuff is a little much when the "zones" are so gargantuan.

If this ain't an open world, what is?

Its not as if Skyrim was fully open either. Loading screens for large cities, dungeons and most annoyingly, buildings. I've seen this complaint a few times and feel it severely lacks veracity.

No, technically Skyrim wasn't either. I think though for me personally I don't mind loading to get into buildings (or rather it's annoying but it doesn't break immersion as much) as much as loading to "fast travel" between sections. Mainly cause I like the travelling part and like to immerse myself in the idea of travelling across the world. If I have to load to get into a city/building, at least I still travelled to get there. I'm just "opening the door". But skipping whole travelling scenes is a little immersion breaking for me (I hate having to use the fast travel option to get somewhere. Hell, it would even be better if they at least had a point of entry at the edge of the map that would trigger me going there rather than me just having to use fast travel to get there.

Basically I know I'm odd, but I want to be forced to do most of the travelling. I don't mind a fast travel option for those that aren't like me. But I hate having to be forced to use it.

But, it's a small gripe and Velen is big enough I'm over it mostly. I still wish I could travel to that castle or travel to the edge of the map to go to White Orchard (haven't even gotten to Skellige islands yet).

lol the best is when you have a serious convo with a character or time is urgent, or by the way, round of gwent?

(Bloody baron questline spoilers)
Oh, you beaten your wife which lead to her getting a miscarriage that turned into a demon that kills pregnant women and eats their unborn children. That sucks, but now for something more important: up for a few rounds of Gwent?

This is a good opportunity to see just how much progress CDPR has made since Witcher 1. In the release version of Witcher 1 (this got better with patches and the Enhanced Edition) you had a FULL loading screen of 40-60s each time you entered or a left a house.

In Witcher 3 you have a 20-30s loading screen masked by a cut scene upon start up and then can snoop around in the world to your hearts content. Amazing progress.

They call it a game of cards. But we know the truth about gwent.

Yeah, good point. I suppose people want a Zelda-style "everythings directly connected" sort of open world more than anything.

Witcher 1's loading problems were due to the Aurora Engine it was based on. In Neverwinter Nights (which is what the Aurora Engine was made for), the more little detail put into zones (actors, props, scripts) the longer the load times became, and the size of an area dramatically increased load times. I imagine the same was true for the Witcher 1, especially with how much detail and the sheer size put into each area. But fortunately, for the EE, they optimized the engine for this purpose.

He didn't make the baby miscarriage, the witches did, which is why she owed them a "debt". I know what you mean though lol.

I experienced some some strange texture loading issues while loading a save inside of
Dandelion's Inn
and then game crashed to my desktop for the first time in 35 hours without an error message.

I chalked it up to the 970's weird 3.5GB/512MB RAM issue. Rebooted my PC and haven't had an issue since.

I'll repeat what I said which got lost at the bottom of a page:

I also want to say that this game has one of the most impressive Day/Night Lighting and Weather systems I've ever seen.

I'm not sure I'm saying it is the "best looking" in a game (on a technical level). But to me, well, it's the best looking. :p

:D

agree wholeheartedly, the weather and tod systems combine to create a lot of variance, it goes a long way in creating a believable world

When stuff like this happens reload the game or close the app. That pretty much fixes the drops I've had in populated areas as long as there isn't a storm going on.
