What's the dealing with loading/saving times? I'm sold after the demo and am wondering what's people's issue with loading/saving times. Is this like Vampire: Bloodlines where it starts off really quick, and once you start making lots of changes to the world/inventory, it slows to an absolute crawl? Cause I didn't finish the game for that reason. Or is it uniform throughout the game and dependent on your rig?

The pre-rendered cutscene at the start essentially explained a bit about the world and your character, and very little about the game's story itself. In that cutscene, it shows Geralt, the main character, who is a mercenary monster slayer who was mutated as a child to be the ultimate killing machine. Essentially he's been trained since youth to be a master swordsman, be immune to poisons, etc. In that cutscene he's taken on a mission/quest to free a princess from a curse -- she was turned into a horrible monster because of her father's incestuous relationship. Geralt has to spend one whole night with the monster to lift the curse -- that's why he doesn't kill her and sleeps in her sarcophagus.

Anyway, the first in-game stuff details how Geralt has been found by his fellow witchers after a long absence where most presumed him dead. In the prologue, the witcher fortress is attacked and some of their most powerful magical secrets were stolen -- you'll find out more about what those specifically are later in the game... needless to say, they're pretty important.

I went out and got the collector's edition and I'm just flat-out loving it.
Can you describe the artbook at all, and if it's worth paying the extra for the collectors edition? I've not really got any interest in the soundtrack cd, but apparently the artbook is 200 pages long........and I'm wondering if the quality and content of it is worth the extra?

I played the demo and actually purchased the game yesterday. The initial loading of the game when you boot up is the same but after that it is muched improved from at least the demo version. When I'd go in a house and then leave in the demo version it would load for like 10-15 seconds. I would say now it's under 5 :D Save times are now very fast ( well I use quicksave). Game is great so far. Oddly enough when I loaded the game onto my computer it somehow had my old demo saves so I didn't have to do the whole 1st chapter again, it Saved me an hour :D

In all my years of countless Jrpg's, i've grown tired of the genre with only a few titles really being worthwhile (FFXII, DQVIII) I've recently started playing Blue Dragon which bored me to tears after a few hours of non sensical clichéd poppycock.
Abso-fucking-lutely!

Seriously though: I have really missed characters like Geralt. The whole concept about choices, the great combat, the awesome world and the alchemy system. The best RPG since years.

I stopped because the load- and savetimes frustrated me to hell. In the latest patch it's improved. So I'm picking it up (Act III) after I finish BioShock.

Demo saves work in the real game? Interesting indeed.

Assuming nobody conflicts this and says later Acts slow to a crawl, sales are +1.

Does your inventory ever get bigger? I'm having a hard time managing all my stuff, in other words, being forced to throw away a lot of items.

Alright, just installed it. Got lost of questions... ^_^; Lots and lots of thanks and virtual cookies for any answers. :p

- There isn't an option to lock the frame rate to 30, is this really annoying to you guys? The frame rate fluctuates a lot just in that first castle section, which is the only thing I played. I'm guessing many games not having this option means it's not really a big deal... right? Many games here stands for the few demos I have on my PC and a handful of installed ones...

- I don't get less than 30 during gameplay in that first section, mostly averaging around 40 during the fights. Would you say that it's safe to assume my settings are fine for the rest of the game? I don't want to have to lower them later on, if I need to tweak the game I'll do it now before playing. Specs btw are Q600/4GB/8800GT/Vista 64.

- Last one... The frame rate went all the way down to 11 during the cutscene showing the bandits crashing the gate with that sorcerer and his creature. Is it like this for everybody?

Just a note, before patching the game I ran it to see the differences and while the initial loading screen dropped from ~40 seconds to ~30, it was the frame rate that changed drastically. I really don't want to uninstall and install again just to make sure but I think it nearly doubled. That's ridiculous. It's cool to see that kind of jump but also disappointing to see a developer/publisher ship a project this far from completion.

So like does this game get better? Got outta the intro in the castle and the game just starts in this gloomy murky field with a small village and its raining..dull stuff?
Also I havent got a clue what the heck is even happening in the story as they just set off and leave the castle without really telling you what for? Some bad mage dude attacks the castle but thats about all I remember. And what are you? A vampire? you just awoke from some slumber?

You're a random monster hunting dude who hangs out with a rag-tag bunch of fantasy cliches in a totally trashed castle. Some jerks show up and steal your friends' potions. You can't do anything to stop it. The jerks kill a red shirt then bail, leaving you to to nail the only hottie in the castle. Your friends blame their trashed crib on the potion stealers and abandon the place. You go off on a quest to catch the guy who took your friends' magic potions even though you can't remember a thing. You're probably in a good mood because you just got some.

... anybody notice the demon wearing wolf skin/head? @_@

I just sat on my desk and glanced at the game case and it freaked the hell out of me, I didn't realize it was upside down for a few seconds.

I can't see what you mean. I saw a frog though and now I can't unsee it, so it's making it hard to readjust and find a demon.

Unless its a demon frog. In which case, yes, I see it :p

I'm still getting a lot of crashes in vista 32bit, with patch 1.2. :(

Is anyone else stuck in the same situation as I am? Anyone know when 1.3 is set to debut?

Sucks, I really wanted to play too. :(

Yep, those of us with crashing problems are pretty much fucked methinks. The forums are littered with people that have applied every single "fix" recommended and still crash constantly. Ah well, I give up until 1.3 comes out or whatever or my laptop manufacturer releases new drivers.

I guess I'm glad that I don't have Vista since I haven't gotten any crashes during my gameplay.

And Patch 1.2 really has improved loading and saving times. I remember before, I was kind of discourages to enter houses because of how long it took to load up and then especially to load back the larger environment outside. Thankfully, the times have really been improved with this patch. It's still kind of slow when loading up a large area, but that is at least understandable.

And yeah, my framerate has also improved, with a whole lot less stuttering as it used to.

People with XP get them too. I don't think there is one specific root cause, XP, 32-bit Vista, SLI, you name it there are many many patterns. Of course some people luck out. I have a RROD-free 360 and bluetooth-dropout-free PS3, so I guess I was bound to find myself on the wrong side of things at some point. Too bad it's with a game I really enjoy, and pretty much the only PC game I really feel like playing right now.

Man, that's so bizarre on the crashing. I have yet to see a single crash, not one, in my over 20 hours of play. I hope they get it straightened out for you guys.

Yes, Vista + 1.2 and it's already crashed twice for me in the first 45 minutes of play.

I got it for Christmas.

This game loves to crash about every hour on the fucking dot. It's weird. It's always before a cutscene so luckily it saves. :lol

I can't get it to run good though. Atleast judging form the begining I get like 10 seconds of buttery smooth 60FPS then down to like 15FPS. I have everything set to low also so that sucks. But I have a feeling it has to do with the character models; does the game not scale the main characters with your settings? :(

ANyways I banged
Triss
and that was awesome. Now I just
buried joe
so does the game get better??

I just got to chapter 3. I go to th swordsmith / blacksmith and want to upgrade my weapons since I have runes and metorites but he asks for some Rune for a prince or something then he will do it because he doesn't want cash. What they hell is he asking for?

Yeah, it crashed on me about three times in five hours last night. At least the save system is pretty solid, so no of the crashes has resulted in me losing more than a minute or two of progress.

I am on the stupid
the Beast boss fight, I've read some strategies both here on GAF and elsewhere, so I'll probably have to use one of my previous saves in order to get that spell that apparently one hits the damn thing. I'll lose some progress, but nothing before that boss fight was challenging, so whatever. Just need to grind, level, get my new spell and play more of this awesome game!

Anybody got EAX to work with this game? Is it only an issue with Vista?

This is really annoying, It's like they released this game while it was in beta and still haven't finished it even with patch 1.2.

Seriously, if you don't have that spell it's just a crapshoot. I got lucky and had him not use his stun on me at all once.

Here's a screen from the first game based on Sapkowski's books:
8fm8oza.jpg

-the screen is from Secret Service (Polish magazine, issue 51, November 1997)
-it was being developed by Metropolis Software and was supposed to come out in 1998
-the game was described as **** Raider with RPG elements

I'm glad it got cancelled, because I don't think it would be as good as CD Projekt's game.

Does The Witcher support Dolby Digital 5.1? I can't find any info on it from the game or its manual but just googling it leads to an official IGN blog for the game that confirms it.

EAX doesn't work, so if it does have 5.1 then I'll wait until I can play it with that. By then patch 1.3 should be out probably so there won't be any need to worry about crashes.

Edit: you know what, I'll just play it right now. If it's really that good and different choices change the experience then I'll play it again later and try surround sound on that second play-through.

Edit 2: it looks like it's possible to enable EAX but you have to add a profile in the Creative Alchemy software or whatever.

And it looks like a lot of crashes are fixed by disabling EAX and other sound effects, not sure if this is before or after patch 1.2... This is really annoying. I'm never buying a game from this developer/publisher again.

Wow thanks, I was looking for that screen.

I threw ALL my Secret Serice mags away 6 years ago... I had every single issue... what a damn fine mag that was (Gulash ruled!).

Wait, I have Vista, and in the few hours I've played this masterpiece it has NEVER, EVER, once crashed, except when I oced my GPU, and I got that fixed in a minute.

fun but crashing way too much in vista. is this a vista problem? is it really time to downgrade?

It's time to upgrade to XP, but not because of this game. It crashes once an hour like clockwork. Game is leaky as hell.

Oh, and question about the ending:

How do the books treat Alvin becoming the Grand Master? That's the one thing which I'm not sure about.

AMD Athlon 64 4000+
1 GB Ram
ATI Radeon X800
XP Pro

And I run it on medium with no AA with some framerate problems so I don't really know how yours would run it, probably a little worse than mine. I'm about to bump up to 2 gigs of ram and see if that helps the frame rate and loading time.
