The Witcher |OT| Damn all dissonances

Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck.

Got the patch and all the files downloaded, but I can't install it because I have to register my original game first and it seems their registration servers are either down or getting pegged by people trying to register.

Boooooooooooooo.

What are the graphics like now and does it run any better? It was kinda sluggish on my PC(although it was on high) and the loading times were painful.

The game looks pretty good from what I've seen but it just doesn't run that well for me. It's not so much a poor framerate as it is inconsistent. It's all over the place, almost stuttering, regardless of the detail level chosen. Crysis runs noticibly better, oddly enough. The framerate is worse, of course, but it doesn't jump around nearly as much.

Load times are good.

(BTW, if anyone has some advice on making the game a little more stable, I'd love to hear it. I'm running XP, Core 2 Duo 2.9ghz, 2GB RAM, 8800GTX)

epmode... Some of the visual settings that make the biggest difference for me (on an Intel Quad Core something or other and an 8800 GT) are Depth of Field and view distance. Especially the view distance made a big difference for me in the tutorial area -- lots of effects going off in the courtyard in parts of it that slow things down... if you can't see them, they don't affect you :)

Try it out... hopefully it helps.

Working on it. Should be fixed shortly if it isn't already. (God damn ass hell, what am I doing on NeoGAF at 6:30am?)

Now it's giving out a different error message, internetexception 12057

I can't get this patch to work. The download keeps ending mid-way, and when it does seem to work, I get this wild error and nothing happens. This is the reason I have a fileplanet account, and I gotta -wait- another day to make use of that?

Lame.

DoF was the first thing to go. It helped during cutscenes but I'm more interested in gameplay stuttering.

I'm pretty sure I tried turning all detail down to low and it didn't have that much of an effect. I'll try again tonight, just to be sure.

How come it takes me to a polish website to download the patch? Four easy steps my ass.
Because they're the official download partner. Seems the bandwidth hit was a bit unexpected... but anyway, I'm sure that other sites will start hosting the patch soon. It's quite easy, provided you can get through the full download.

Waiting for mirrors, even if you do manage to negotiate that abortion of a website you still get terrible download speeds.

It's not that bad to get the file -- just click the name of the file or the strange scidjdjz whatever word with the arrow under it... then wait ten seconds as the conveniently Polish text tells you. Come on! It's simple!

yes. you may smack me around a bit for this.

Are you sure you're not forcing VSync in your video card control panel? It's possible you're jumping in between 60-30fps, instead of 30-24fps in Crysis, so that would explain the jankiness you're describing.

I'm forcing Vsync through my Nvidia drivers, yeah. I'm also forcing vsync through the Crysis settings screens. Hell, I have vsync on in every 3D PC game I own. Tearing is just one of those things that bugs the hell out of me.

I'll try disabling it tonight but is there any particular reason why I would only really notice the trouble in The Witcher vs everything else (even stuff that doesn't run at a reliable 60 FPS. WoW, for example)?

Also, if you're on the right track, is there any way to throttle The Witcher's framerate to 30 FPS max?

You bet. The Evolve thing is a remnant of my agency days, and I don't particularly want to wait for another account activation here.
I take it you guys are really happy about how well The Witcher has done?

I really hope you guys hit a million sales. God knows the game (and you guys) deserves it.

Now I just want a full expansion pack :D

WoW supports triple buffering, so FPS drops below 60 usually keep the actual framerate rather than jumping straight to 30.

WoW is pretty wierd though. Even if I have triple buffering disabled, it will act as if it's using triple buffering. Then, out of nowhere, it goes back to dropping straight to 30fps. Then I set triple buffering on, and it will act in the same fashion.

You could try forcing triple buffering through the NVidia drivers if you really don't want tearing, but the triple buffering option in the control panel doesn't always work. The NVidia drivers are pretty shitty. =\

The mods might rename your account if you give them the reason for it.

Thanks for the incredibly useful post. I suppose I didn't realize how important triple buffering really is, I'll play around with my settings tonight.

In other news, I want to thank EvolveTom for gog.com. I no idea CDPROJEKT was behind it.

Wow thewitcher.com is getting hammered. I've never seen it run so poorly.

How did any of you already download it?

I thought that was the whole point of the EE though? 0_o

Whats that patch got then?
The patch itself implements all of the fixes/improvements to the game. The language packs and new adventures are just separate downloads to ensure that people who don't want them don't have to get them (with absolutely everything -- as in the Steam version -- it's like a 10+GB download).
Everything's available... FileShack, the site I linked, just doesn't happen to have everything up yet.

Oh ok. How many different downloads are there to get the complete lot? Just the 3?

No problem.

One thing to note about triple buffering though, it does add some input lag. For that reason it's usually best not to use it in shooters or games where you need very fast response. Should be fine for The Witcher if the NVidia drivers actually work.

Patch 1.4 (bug fixes, loading improvement, character models)
English Language Pack (voice work and subtitles)
Bonus Missions Pack (adds two modules to be loaded like mods, made by CDProjekt RED)

That's all you really need. There's also the free Soundtrack and some Artwork you can get, but that's not part of the game.

What?

On their website it just says download the patch + the language file and you're good to go.

EDIT: cheched the website properly this time... everything has to be downloaded seperately. 3 easy steps my black ass.
that's all you need if you just want the core game updated, yeah. If you want the new adventures, get em :)

So for those of us getting the enhanced edition patch...are we getting the uncensored version?

No, but you can download the boobie card files if you want. There were floating around the Internet somewhere ever since the original release. That's all that's censored, the sex cards you get in the US version has the nipples covered by clothes or arms. Oh, and the one Dryad NPC doesn't have nipples in the US version.

The people who complained about censorship should just go get some real porn, and get back to enjoying the game :lol

Oh thats no big deal then.

There was an error in the retail US version of EE where they forgot to include the blood files. They put up the patch for it pretty quickly, so if you find you don't have blood and it's turned on, just get the patch.

I'm not sure if they fixed that for the EE download.

EvolveTom, I was wondering what CDProjekt had to do with the production of MGS4? It was in the credits lol.
AFAIK we published/distributed the game in Poland and a few other territories... may have also done some localization work? I dunno.
