Canada having a great start to these games. If we finish like Vancouver we might beat it which would be awesome as traditionally, Canada is always around 5th in medal count normally. One disappointment though is that we are consistently shit in the traditional skiing events like cross country and downhill. Something we should be good at given how many fucking mountains we have.

I like CBC's site for the amount of streaming it offers, but some its articles and interviews are bush league. CTV definitely had better personalities.

Absolutely, David Amber and that woman with him on "olympic morning" are two of the most boring people ever. I watched a segment of the French interview with the Dufour-Lapointe sisters and it was way better. Sure it's their first language, but the interviewer was actually having a bit of fun with them, and connecting, unlike the english guys.
Ron Maclean is terrible unless he's playing off Don Cherry.
Stromboulopoulous is a great interview, where the hell is he?
Jian Gomeshi may be there, put him on TV.

dat crown company. I do like Scott Russell and the asian guy whose name I don't know isn't bad, but everyone else has been quite disappointing. It's a shame Mansbridge went back to Canada.

I think CBC has gotten a LOT better in Sochi. Like, CTV's coverage of Vancouver and London curbstomped the fuck out of CBC's coverage of Torino and Beijing. I still think CTV is better than even the Sochi CBC, but CBC has come a looooong way.

CTV Vancouver/London >>> CBC Sochi >>>>>> poop >>>>> CBC up through Beijing

CBC is miles better as we don't have to deal with that shitty song.

fuck don't remind me

I think the biggest thing CBC's missing right now is Brian Williams...

The dude with the aviator style glasses who always covers speed skating is still around, I think. He's good. But there seems to be a lot of new people aboard CBC this year. Maybe CTV stole msot of CTV's talent in the past?

e: forgot Brian Williams retired http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BaIPokCo2Ew

As long as they show the events live, I don't care if it's CBC or CTV. When they go to the anchor, I switch channel.

The analysts are all pretty good, Craig McMoris, Kristina Groves and the guy who does cross-country/biathlon especially.

The figure skating trio sucks though. STFU!

CTV used a lot of the TSN and Sportsnet personalities. CBC isn't doing that. Even the event announcers are noobs or nobodies. That's probably the Rogers' connection.

Just not the same quality as CTV. The bigger show in Rio de Janeiro could be even a bigger mess.

Also, I really liked "I Believe" in Vancouver. Come at me, bros. Although I do think it probably wasn't needed in London.

Now that I think about it, TSN and Sportsnet are really getting 2nd rate stuff. Replays, leftover women's hockey and curling matches. They don't seem to be as involved as they were with CTV.

I suppose we shouldn't complain. Americans have legit complaints.

Oh yeah that song, totally forgot about that lol. Haven't watched much of CTV this week (unless there was a specific event I wanted). I've been on SRC like 90% of the time.

CBC personality complaints aside, some of the supplements they've done have been pretty interesting. I'm enjoying the "My Team, My Town", and the "Raising an Olympian" segments.

I actually don't even remember them reusing it in London, haha

I should state that I don't have a problem with their broadcasting during the live events. That said, nobody could stand up to Rod Smith calling the swimming in London.

I'm not enjoying curling as much now that I know more of the rules.

Specifically, I hate the rules for the hammer. I never realized before that the team with the hammer is very often better off scoring 0 than 1. It even seems that at times they might be better off giving up a point than earning a point. And similarly for the team without the hammer, they would very often prefer giving up a point to drawing, and in some cases might prefer giving up a point to earning a point.

In my inexperienced and ill-informed opinion, I don't think this meta-game strategy is necessary. There would still be a lot of strategy involved with going for dangerous big score opportunities, or safer scores, without making it so a "worse" round improves your chances.

Just watched today's medal ceremonies for Canada. Still can't believe Bilodeau defended his gold. That's just incredible. And while she didn't quite steal my heart from Justine, how adorable is Dara Howell with the stitches right between her eyes on the bridge of her nose?

So good.

Depends on the score and the end for curling strategy. The problem with always going for it is the steal risk. You can get in big trouble and give up more than one if too many rocks are in play.

Playing defensively is smart. Try and get your 2 with minimum risk. Teams got so good with defensive take-outs that they changed the rules to get more rocks in the play. The 4-rock rule forces teams to at least try for an offensive end and not just go for the blank.

scoring 1 with the hammer is called being "forced". it's basically a win of the end for the opponent. scoring 0 is called a blank.

as for forcing being preferable to stealing, there aren't many circumstances where this would be the case. for example when the score is tied and you're in the 9th end, stealing 1 would mean you have to force in the 10th and then go to an extra, whereas it might be easier to force in the 9th and then go for the deuce in the 10th.

as Parch implied, stealing points is very difficult, and usually only happens when the team with the hammer makes a mistake.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
Apparently I know the guy representing the Philippines, Michael Martinez.

Met him in carpool though.

Edit: wait no... it's a different guy who has the same name, the heck.

Ah, the good old days when Scotland tried to win every game 1-0. Curling now is much better than before the 4-rock rule.

I wasn't into curling prior to the advent of the Free Guard Zone, so I can only imagine how terrible it would've been, haha

I played for 17 years, mostly before the free guard. When international rules went to the 4-rock, Canada adopted a 3-rock rule before eventually caving in and matching the international rule.

At the club level it really didn't make a lot of difference because there were so few teams that could play such a defensive take-out game. Only the elite teams could do this, and it was a fairly significant advantage before free guard.

Usa with 0 medals in half pipe???? Announcers thought we might get all 3. What a choke.

thought Shaun White got really screwed though. Not that I know anything.

Shaun's run wasn't clean. I-Pod nailed the YOLO Flip. Shaun has been on top for so long. Hard to take anything away from him.

He's probably still the best but his last run was weak.

I pretty much knew it was over when he botched that one landing and lost speed/confidence.

I'm not sure what he would have gone for if he didn't have that mistake but what he ended with wasn't nearly enough.

Ok, saw what you said now, that is actually arguable but the other riders were so clean even though White does more impressive tricks and gets more air.

Heia Norge!

Medal Count
1 Norway 4 3 4 11

Tiny little country kicking everyone's butts.

There comes a moment when my heart must stand alone
On this lonely path I've chosen
Like a house that's not a home
Sometimes when I feel I've had enough
And I feel like giving up
You willed me to be all I can be
Now nothing can stop me

I believe in the power that comes
From a world brought together as one
I believe together we'll fly
I believe in the power of you and I

This is the moment we have dreamed of all our lives
We'll be the change we wish from others
We'll stand tall for what is right
And in my heart, there'll be no doubt
The arms of the world will come reaching out
And embrace me to be all I can be
Now nothing can stop me

I believe in the power that comes
From a world brought together as one
I believe together we'll fly
I believe in the power of you and I

I believe the time is right now
Stand tall and make the world proud
I believe together we'll fly
I believe in the power of you and I
I believe in the power of you and I

I believe, I believe, I believe in...
I believe, I believe in...
I believe, I believe, I believe in...
I believe, I believe in you
I believe, I believe, I believe in...
I believe, I believe in you
I believe, I believe, I believe in you

I believe together we'll fly
I believe in the power of you and I

I believe the time is right now
Stand tall and make the world proud
I believe together we'll fly
I believe in the power...

I believe in the power that comes
From a world brought together as one (of you and I)
I believe together we'll fly
I believe in the power of you and I (I will)

I believe the time is right now
Stand tall and make the world proud
I believe together we'll fly (together we'll fly)
I believe in the power of you and I (I believe in the power of you and I)
