there are no new Hollywood Stars

I was discussing the same some days ago with my friends: where are the new Tom Cruise, Di Caprio, Tom Hanks, Brad Pitt, etc?

What is a movie star? If it's only someone that everyone knows at the moment there's a barrage of them. I think "movie star" in the classic Hollywood sense means you have to have a silver screen magic, a long lasting brand that has box office draw well beyond one character or franchise. Everyone knows you, most people love you, and will show up to watch anything you do. You might have a few defining franchises but you're not totally defined by them. You might be a one trick pony or a chameleon but the important thing is people will remember your movies well after they're out of circulation. You need a certain degree of glamor off screen, on the red carpet, and people want to be you or fuck you.

Tom Holland, Anya Taylor-Joy, Adam Driver, Zendaya, Margot Robbie, Zoe Kravitz, Chris Pratt, Michael B Jordan, Remi Malek, Hailee Steinfeld, Ana de Armas, Robert Pattinson...

Tons of actors and actresses still in the infancy or earlier part of their careers. Not really sure what qualifies as a star to you, but pretty sure the average person knows every name I listed above plus more.

Tom Holland, Well see how big he gets, right now he's barely more than his gen's Mark Hamill or Carrie Fisher, meaning his brand doesn't really extend beyond one character. He needs new big projects. Anya Taylor Joy is well on her way to becoming one, she picks great high profile projects so unlike Holland she's famous independent of a character and that's one of the unspoken rules to become a big movie star.

Margo Robbie feels like a movie star, I think her fame and draw has moved pretty far beyond her breakout role of Harley Quinn. Don't forget the two Ryans, Reynolds and Gosling. They're not huge box office draws but everyone knows them, they have a "brand", and their movies do well enough to be dependable.

Chris Pratt, Michael B Jordan, Robert Pattinson are good actors and well known, but they seem to fall in and out of the spotlight. Florence Pugh has potential to be that Meryl Streep kinda actress, known for her acting and versatility. Ana De Armas is has all the looks to be a classic "it" girl, but how long she can stay in the limelight remains to be seen. Timothee Chalamat, why too early to tell but he's got that rare blend of acting skills and heartthrob looks, if he makes the right moves he'll be the next Tom Cruise or Brad Pitt one day.

Zendaya, Zoe Kravitz, Raimi Malek, Hailee Steinfeld... all seem destined to be forgotten beyond the cultural moment. The Rock is a weird case of being a total celeb everyone knows and loves with no great films under his belt.

I agree Jennifer Lawrence was probably the last actor or actress I can think of who could both sell tickets with her fame but also good enough to get Oscar nods

The Rock in recent times had that Schwarzenegger style star appeal that could sell tickets and Hollywood were just making movies cause he was in it. But has never had a movie like Terminator to his name

Hollywood does lack the leading man who can sell tickets to a blockbuster and deserve an Oscar at the same time like DiCaprio or Pitt. Honestly maybe Pattison who had his phase making every teenage girl love him like Leo and is now in his serious actor phase. But I don't think he has the pull of Leo

Zendaya probably has the most potential

Rock would beat Schwarzenegger in one on one fight when they were both in their prime

Even though I am an 80s kid and fondly remember the action stats of that decade, and there are certain actors that I loved in certain roles throughout the ages, I dislike the idea of marquis Hollywood stars. I'd prefer a variety of talent being used based on merit and good casting rather than big name stars being used to push a movie and a lot of times end up playing parts that they aren't best suited for.

Plus it's weird for these giant stars to get hese huge contracts because people watch movies simply cuz they're in them rather than it being an interesting movie to begin with and people are getting paid tens to hundreds of millions of dollars for acting. There are millions of good actors and a lot of good actors are not famous. I actually can believe a movie in Fall for a better when I don't recognize anybody. People are easily typecast by me or recognized and it breaks the illusion for me.

This is a very solid list. Zendaya is a force of nature.

I'm hope the old guard in Hollywood moves on. Apparently its filled with scumbags, villains and generally bad people.

If they are not capable of making money, they will eventually have to move on

Hard to build stars when modern Hollywood's output is so mediocre.

To be honest until the whole superhero cycle burns itself out I don't see much opportunity for change, because until then they are just going to continue sticking semi-known actors in the capes and body-suits, slather them with CGI and call it done.

Zendaya has a lot of range. Comedy, serious drama, can sing, and wouldn't be out of place in an action film.

Unless there's something off screen that pops up and ends her career, she seems destined to be a Hollywood mainstay.
You are so right.

Spiderman
Dune
KC Undercover
Euphoria

She just needs her badass assassins / kung fu/ action movie.

I would love her in Killbride (Kill Bill vol 3) as Nakia Bell or that completely unnecessary remake of John Woo's The Killer that people have been trying to make for 15 years.

I like Zendaya in the movies I've seen her in, but she doesn't strike me as someone with a lot of screen presence. However, I could be wrong; she is young, maybe she just needs that breakout role to really showcase her.

Would love to see her face off against Maya Hawke in a Kill Bill vol 3 though. The Killer remake has already cast Omar Sy as the lead btw, it's going straight to Peacock streaming.

Now imagine it with him not having the gun and the bad guy being the Rock
Arnie is, I think, pretty close size-wise to the Rock. As a pro wrestler would that give Dwayne an edge over Arnie? Arnie was in the military as a cop so presumably has some basic fighting skills. I think it would be a pretty close fight.

There are some new stars that can draw but the era we grew up in is dead. Just look at the average movie you find on any streaming service these days. It’s a bunch of random nobodies with zero presence, charisma and acting chops. Modern actors are for the most part just meat filling a role.

It’s not just movie stars but rock and pop stars as well. I don’t think there’s been a genuine bonafide rock star since Axl Rose basically killed the concept. Manson and Cobain were obviously big names but nothing like Rose was.

And I think it’s a good thing. The type of celebrity worship that some people show is absolutely baffling to me.

2020 is the only year where she hasn't done a film, she hasn't disappeared.
She was in about 3 movies per year from 2011-2016. Including receiving 4 Oscar nominations in that same time span, the last one being in 2016.

Weinstein scandal breaks in 2017. Rumors around that she had been "Harvey's girl" for a while.

Since 2017, one movie per year and no Oscar nominations.

Edit: You're correct in that she hasn't "disappeared", but the above trend is what I was hyperbolizing by saying "disappeared"

Rock is a bit bigger and more athletic

ohhh, I don't know about that. Arnold in his prime was a BEAST. That muscle wasn't all show though I don't think either one of them would really be all that great in a fight, they just don't have the training. Rock's wrestling probably gives him the edge but I bet Arnie could throw a decent punch.

"Arnie could throw a decent punch."

I think Arnies best bet would be to get hold of him and choke him out

The only one close to stardom is Chris Pratt, a movie star can carry an original movie and turn it into a blockbuster hit. There used to be a dozen of people in Hollywood that could do that. None of the actresses listed here can carry a movie like Julia Roberts or Sigourney Weaver could in the 90s.

Tom Holland lead the Uncharted film to great success, essentially an "original" film in the publics eye.
Anya Taylor-Joy either got nominated or won awards for The Witch, Emma and The Queen's Gambit. Of course she can carry a film.
Adam Driver was absolutely phenomenal in Marriage Story and was great in The Last Duel and House of Gucci. Also received award nominations for Marriage Story and Blackkklansman.
Zandaya is admittedly a lot newer to the industry but she is getting a lot of recognition for her role in Euphoria.
Margot Robbie either got nominated or won awards for I Tonya, Wolf of Wall Street and Bombshell. Of course she can carry a film.

I can't be bother posting aboot the rest. They all have great potential.

I know you like to shill for modern Hollywood. But would a random person from a country in the Indian Ocean know who these people are? I doubt it.
