Thief (2014) PC performance thread

Rig is an

I5
4GB RAM
AMD Radeon HD7950

and I keep getting stuttering it's real bad :/ getting 60FPS ok but every minute or so it just goes down and i get the awful stuttering ><

Try the 32bit executable thing earlier in the thread, also (whatever the AA option besides FXAA is) off, also VSync off, also exclusive fullscreen on (don't forget to click "apply" on this).

Those helped quite a bit for me, together with going medium and turning off a few other things.

There's something weird going on with this game. My performance is fine in the missions, but it often just tanks in the city and becomes totally unplayable.

I have to set texture quality down to low in the city sometimes but in the missions I can have it on very high. The city areas aren't even that big, they're all split up. I don't get why it should have such a dramatic effect.

The executable change, vsync and exclusive fullscreen tweaks at least seemed to help overall performance, but it's still crazy how demanding this game is. More than crysis 3.

I just joined pcgaming, and was wondering, how do I lock it to 30fps? It runs on 60, but dips to the 50s and sometimes 40s, it just unplayable. And that's with everything on very low or high.

You can impose a framerate cap using MSI Afterburner's OSD utility.

i7-3770K @ 3.50 (overclocked at 4.20)
GTX 770 Lightning (2GB)
32GB Ram
Windows 8.1

Game ran like shit with everything on it's lowest, but after toggling Exclusive Fullscreen off, everything runs buttery smooth on the highest available setting. Texture Filtering as the exception, 8x instead of 16x.
Rivatuner doesn't see Thief for some reason so I can't say how the framerate is exactly but it feels like 60FPS. Silky smooth, in any case, with some exceptions in The City. Especially around fog effects. The stuttering doesn't take too long and its very rare, so I don't really mind. But still. Very strange.

What I do mind however are the game freezes. I've spend around six hours with the game and it locked up around eight times or more at completely random places. :(

Been testing performance on this on my box, (2500k @ 4.2, 670 sli) and I've found turning SSAA off makes a big difference. According to Afterburner, the cards are using around 1.8 GB of Video memory, and I think the stuttering is due to my cards only have 2gb. Anyway, turning that off, and everything else max'd gives me an average fps of 60.7.

i5 4570 @3.4Ghz
8GB ddr3
GTX 760 2GB

1920x1080 and everything set to max except SSAA and V-sync turned off

Pretty happy with the results I'd say. No stuttering and it mostly stays above 60fps during gameplay.

So I keep experience crashes in Thief. Either "Game has stopped working" or full on BSOD crashes.

I have an i5 2500K, 16GB ram and an AMD 7970. It seem to be an UE3 thing, but I can't figure out what the hell is going on. Anyone else having crashes?

Has the dev team mentioned anything about a patch to fix cutscenes? They stutter so bad. Its hard to enjoy this game in its current state

I feel I should mention again that the benchmark is not a good indication of the performance you'll get during gameplay. I get well over 100 FPS during regular play and in the benchmark I get about 60.

Patch 1.2 notes
Hello everyone,

We have just made public a new version of the PC version of Thief, v1.2 build 4116.4 This patch will be applied by Steam automatically when you next start the game. If your game does not update, please restart the Steam client.
This patch will address the following issues.

- Fixed an issue where, for some users, controller right stick would not turn the camera and controller hints would not appear.
- Fixed an issue where, for some users, the keyboard mapping menu would immediately map a key and then hang.
- Fixed an issue with the fog when SSAA was enabled that was introduced in v1.1.
- Fixed a crash when the user had 99 saves and tried to access the save menu in game.
- Added an option to the launcher configuration dialog to run the 32-bit version on a 64-bit machine. The 32-bit version has several features disabled causing it to use less memory, providing a smoother experience for users with lower spec machines. The checkbox for this option can be found in the display tab of the launcher options dialogue.
- Update: Deploy additional DLLs with the game to avoid issues with corrupt DLLs on user machines, which could cause the game to not start at all.
- Update: Moved Lockpick and Frame Search helper to the HUD menu and will now also affect mouse/keyboard.
WARNING: Disabling Frame Search helper while playing with mouse/keyboard could make it very hard, if not impossible, to find the button.
- Various performance improvements.
- Various crash fixes.

While we expect this patch to be an improvement for everyone, if you do have trouble with this patch and prefer to stay on the old version we made a Beta available on Steam, v1.1 build 4110.1, that can be used to switch back to the previous version

Step 1: Go to your STEAM library and select Thief in your game list
Step 2: right-click on the game and go to properties
Step 3: go to the Betas tab in the properties menu
Step 4: select version 1.1 and press ok.

This will set you back to the original released version of the game.
We will keep monitoring for feedback and will release further patches as it seems required. We always welcome your feedback!

Has anyone gotten the game to run well after leaving your safehouse? The area immediately after the safehouse tanks my gpu (gtx680)

Mantle patch just went live:

Added AMD Mantle support.
Added AMD TrueAudio support. TrueAudio hardware support can be enabled in the in-game audio options menu.
For more information about AMD Mantle and AMD TrueAudio technology, please see:
http://community.amd.com/community/a...iver-for-thief
AMD Catalyst 14.3 Beta driver is required to use AMD Mantle and AMD TrueAudio.
Image Based Reflections are now optional in 64-bit version. Used to always be enabled in 64-bit and never in 32-bit.
Added "Automatically Limit Texture Quality" option, when turned on it limits texture quality based on the amount of dedicated VRAM.
Fixed medallion icons not or incorrectly lighting up on some setups.
Fixed subtitles not showing during cinematics when using the 32-bit version.
Fixed an issue where on specific setups, the game would crash during startup, and creating a new windows account would fix it.
Fixed an issue where sometimes the mouse position would be offset when running with Surround or Eyefinity.
Various crash fixes.
Various optimizations.

(See the OP for a link to the 14.3b drivers if you're not running them already.)

And we now know at least one difference between the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of the game: IBR in the latter.

Latest amd beta driver gives me a 15fps boost under dx and a 28fps boost over the original dc benchmark colour me impressed.

Also the audio is definitely more atmospheric under mantle, looks like I'll be restarting abd playing through with my headphones on

Grr, I'm still trying to play this but I simply cannot reach an acceptable level of performance. There are constantly weird hiccups, hitches, and dips happening throughout the game. Framerate is reported at 60 fps by monitoring software (including FRAPS), but it doesn't look correct in motion. Plus it skips a lot.

I'm running it from an SSD with plenty of ram and v-ram. Resolution and settings really make no difference.

i5-3570 + GTX680 (still, I know, it's getting old)

I really just want to play it and it feels awful. I can hardly believe this is a UE3 game as those typically run like butter.

I can't get anything over 30fps even on Low, it's the same framerate even on the highest settings so I'm thinking something is a miss here.

Nevermind the actual frame rate is fine in the game even on highest. Either I was ballsing up or the benchmark tool is shite.

Nvidia's first set of DX-optimised drivers are out (337.50 betas). Here's how Thief's benchmark now fares on my system (8GB DDR3-1600, 2600K @ 4.6GHz and 2x slightly overclocked 2GB 670s):

335.23 (SLI enabled):

337.50 betas (SLI enabled):

Relative differences (337.50b versus 335.23):
Minimum: +6.4fps (+~15%)
Average: +15.1fps (+~23%)
Maximum: +3.2fps (+~3%)

I picked this up during the recent GMG sale and I'm getting crashes after a few minutes of play, has anyone else encountered this? After toning the settings down I lasted a few minutes as opposed to the 1-2 minutes I would last when I was on high settings. My rig is an i7 3770, 16 gigs of RAM 560 Ti ruinning Windows 7. The crashes can be anything from a desktop dump to a full black or white screen of death. Accouring to my cup monitor my garphics card gets up to 26C but that just might be the ambient temperature, so I'm not 100% sure if this thing is just overheating my card. Curious to see if anyone else here is having the same issue.

Hey guys, I was wondering if I could get the most ultra settings and get around 45 fps with my rig. 60 fps is no requirement, everything between 40-45 will be golden. Will I get that with a:

i5 2500k 3.3 ghz (NOT overclocked)
8 GB ram
GTX 770 2 gig
Playing at 1920 x 1080

Thanks!

You should be fine for the most part. UnrealEck managed a 53fps average on his similar system and this was before Nvidia released its overhead-reducing drivers, plus the benchmark is more intensive than the game proper. I've updated the links in the OP so grab the 337.81s if you haven't already.

Bumping this to ask if anyone has experience with downsampling this gane? Does it have any real benefits over the in-game AA options? Does it improve texture quality in any ways?

Also, any mods?
