This gen is the worst ever and i've been in gaming since year 1998

Unreal engine 5 being a worse look for nearly every game killed this gen.

You have maybe 2 years to get your engine to look better than previous tech.

After that, you need to stop trying to make it happen. It'll be 15 years before most hardware performs well natively.

How absurd it is to read these gamer talking about "next gen" games when that concept is only in their imagination.

We have thousands of games coming out every month with thousands of themes and people still can't get enough. There is nothing more boring than listening to the "gamer" who has grown up and lost his desire to play and blames it on the "generations" of consoles.

Bla bla bla ... its been great for me . I'm the kind of person who looks for the goods in everything , not just be a hater . So every year and every gens were great for me , that's why I'm feeling bad for people like OP .

I'm currently playing Expedition 33 , FF7 Rebirth , Space Marine 2 , they are all great games . Just finished Silent Hill 2 which was such an amazing remake .

Still yet to catch up on Metaphor Refantazio , Black Myth Wukong , Elden Ring Shadow of Erdtree DLC , Hundred line Last Defense Academy , RE4 Remake , Khazan , Persona 3 Reload , Two point Museum , Project Hospital , Lies of P , Cities Skyline 2 , V Rising . Still yet to finish Avowed , Dragon Dogma 2 , Baldur's Gate 3 , Diablo 4 , Path of Exle 2 , Last Epoch

And then there are new games coming like Wuchang , Stellar Blade (PC) , Ninja Gaiden 4 , Vampire Masquerade 2 , Gears of War E-day , Cronos The New Dawn , No Rest for the Wicked , Doom the Dark Age , Titan Quest 2 , Gothic Remake , New Onimusha , Crimson Desert

Like holy shit what else can you ask for ,
For someone who mains PC and bought every PS console and Xbox until 360 this generation has been terrible for first party outside Nintendo.

Can't argue for the lack of quality games though.

Sadly online discourse seems to be largely dominated by 2 loud groups: One that literally only cares about graphics and the other that literally only cares about first party exclusives.
And despite hating this gen and modern gaming both groups seem to have 60 hours a week set apart for gaming because they finish all games in a like a week and go back to complain about there being nothing to play.

Whenever I talk about gaming with people in person everyone seems to be way more positive and excited about it

You could make a case for this gen being the worst, but we've also gotten some absolutely amazing titles this gen. Baldur's Gate 3, Elden Ring, and Clair Obscur come to mind. So it hasn't been all bad.

So much hype around Ryzen CPU,SSD etc and yet so little inovations, level design is same as old gen, graphics are basically like upgraded PS4,no destruction,no inovations in physics.Who knows if even UE5 will be playable on this gen. I think we might have to wait till PS6/Next Xbox to get true next gen games.
You must have missed then Wii 😂

on here. Exclusively on here. The wider gaming internet is not like GAF. Well, maybe here and some sects of Twitter. But places like Youtube, /v/ discord and others are a completely different story

I know it's taboo to talk about other forums here, but if we can get a thread moaning about purpleforum every now and then i think it's fair game

Baldurs Gate 3 hyped up as the best game of all time when it didn't do anything I hadn't seen in Jade Empire was pretty funny.
Seriously, BG3 is in my top hot takes I've yet to post as I don't want to ruffle other people's jimmies. It not only did nothing for me, it actually managed to upset me from the onset. The story, premise, writing and characters were such a letdown for me personally. It felt like a Marvel movie.

I know most love it and that's totally fine and I'm happy for them but I regret buying it. For the most part though most games people list are just reskinned games from the PS360 gen. Elden Ring is just open world Dark Souls with, to me, uglier design and stupid world building. Crossgen continues to linger preventing current gen from having a chance to build its own identity and there are seemingly more remasters and remakes than even reboots.

The huge amount of greed in the industry hasn't done it any favors either, with much of it burning away much of the goodwill it had with customers. There is a definite lack of talent involved with most seemingly having moved on or retired which is understandable. People often wonder what could've been or who might enter the space in the future, but I'd love for the cheaper more frequent output of the PS2/Xbox/GC+PC+Handhelds of the early '00s. They could do more with less(smaller teams and budgets) yet have a more cohesive vision of the end product. Not saying that corpo influence and greed wasn't present then and whatnot.

Been gaming in the late 90s too but I'll say this gen is better than the last gen at least cause there's more and more good games coming.

RE Village
RE4 Remake
Whatever new RE games are coming
Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart
Stellar Blade
FFVII Rebrith
Space Marine 2
Wukong
FFVII Remake Part 3
GTA VI
Oblivion Remaster
Tides of A
Mario Kart World
Metroid Prime 4
etc etc etc

It's because of the Tabletop like feature where you get a lot of choices with tons of content. But yeah I personally didn't like it, don't like the style and don't like the characters or their personalities. It's not even top 5 for me in 2023. Even as a CRPG I find Rogue Trader much more interesting and better despise the latter having a much lower budget.

Considering BG3 was in development for so long I expected more.
It's enjoyable enough I guess but none of the characters will stay with me.

Baffling take. Idk I've only been PC a year but modding old games really reinvigorated my love for games. But there are still a ton of new games I love. Elden ring, black myth, Oblivion, Delta force, Silent hill. So much to love

So much truth in both these posts.

last days of the switch. So looking back on it.
It's a great hybrid system, the impossible ports.( Much love to saber. panic button rebellion and cd project red and night dive.) indie support (Shin'en knocking it kit the park) and some decent third party games. Not to mention the Nintendo first party magic. Mario kart 8 in handheld while I was on the plane was a great way to pass the time. Switch 2 looks like it will be on the same track. TBH Nintendo have been keeping gaming fun. If they keep on this way I'm definitely continuing to game and on switch 2 when I get around to buying one.

I've been gaming since the 2nd gen. I'll say the 9th gen has been thoroughly underwhelming.
I think the criticism for this generation that most people are overlooking is that, most of these games could have been made for PS4 (most were cross gen anyway) and very little would have been lost. There's almost nothing in these titles that could not have been possible on last-gen hardware. Hell, I played mostly on a Series S this gen and then moved on to a PS5 and Series X and I couldn't really tell the difference, so most people wouldn't either.

I have seen uncompressed PS5 Pro footage and have experienced some of the modern titles on PC on Ultra settings and the jump is so minimal, it's embarrassing. :(

PS6 and Xbox 900 will change lives, just you wait! Add frame gen fake upscaling, it is like you are there.

Baldur's Gate III, Astro Bot, Against the Storm, Cyberpunk 2077, A Plague Tale: Requiem are in my all-time favorites. We still have time for next-gen. I am sure there will be even better games.

Give me a significantly better, more efficient CPU, 24GB of LPDDR6X RAM, a faster SSD and a beefier GPU over the PS5 Pro and we might finally see a difference. :(

I agree. On paper yes there are many releases but unlike last gen, so many were underwhelming 6/10, broken on release, missing feautres etc. The amount og gaming i did on PS4 and latter is not even 1/5 of what I played this gen and I have both PS5 and XsX. Its not because im 6-7 years older, its because im older I dont have time to play boring slogs, bloated for no reason with mediocre story. On PS4 at some points I was playing 3 games at the same time because I couldnt catch up how quickly good games were coming out. Both single player and multiplayer. I dont remember dropping so many games this gen because I felt like its the same shit over and over.

Last gen, you could say the first 1.5 years felt this way, then the flood gates opened, now, 70% of highly anticipated AAA come broken and unfinished with minimum effort and mandatory empty open worlds. I couldnt care less about RT lighting, make fun and long lasting, memorable games. Most games I played are still cross gen and most of the time its just a 4K shine on a been-there-done that formula. PS+ did nothign for me as those 2-3 free games, the best I already played on the PS4. I had over 80 physical games on PS4, PS5 I dont know if I played 10 in 4 years.

Too bad we will have Switch 2 hardware holding us back for another decade lol

Nah, I imagine the Switch 2 will be like the Switch in a few years, and when next gen starts, the Switch 2 will just get ports from this gen still.

I preferred 360/ps3 era.
TONS of games AA and AAA plenty every month. More games in 1 month than in whole year this gen.
And we got whole TRILOGIES. Mass effect, gears, uncharted(and then also tlou).
Dark souls1,2 , demons souls, oblivion, skyrim, fallout3, gta4, 5.
HUGE, Unimaginable output from studios that then made 3-5 games and now will make 1... or less games in the same time.
Just insane insane insane.

And the games were perfect 8-20 hours long. Much less bloat, much more new idea, completed trilogies. Games that do not take months to finish.
Developers were able to be mor risky. Now, because every game takes 7 years to make and is 70+ hours long... they are very riskaverse.
2011 alone was fucking insane.

And that list is BARELY mentioning all the titles

This gets me too.

You have studios that used to pump out 2-3 games a year and now they barely release two games a decade, and oftentimes one of those is a remaster of an old game.

I know the excuse is that games are more complex and complicated to create these days, but I just don't buy it. The technology and development engines available today should make it much easier to go from concept to finished product. Maybe it's time for these companies to embrace AI and let it do the gruntwork to speed up output.

Also, don't forget that back in the 80s and 90s games were programmed in assembly language and the output was still better than what we get today.

People saying how new games are more complex nowadays so they take longer but its a bunch of BS. MOST and i mean MOST games are literally reusing their older assets all over the place and just not having to compress anything and keep the 4k textures intact. Yakuza games look the same since Yakuza 0 lol. The more complex argument falls flat when all we are getting is remasters and sequels. If there was even 1/3 the output of new IP that was last gen, Id agree but saying games like GOW 2, Horizon 2, Spiderman 2 etc take longer because tech...please its the same shit packaged in 4k. We are still getting TLOU 2 as a showcase for this gen....a 5 year old game from the PS4. On PS3 we went from U1 to U2 to U3, all massive graphical and techical leaps on the same system plus squeezed in TLOU. People here treating remasters as if they are remaking the whole code from scratch or that you need 300+ staff to make one.

The difference is plain huge. Hard to deny reality when you personally look up lists like these.

Great point, I think OP makes sense, but you also make sense...

I'm loving gaming as much as I did as a kid. I'm actually nostalgic for the simpler times of games not being turned into storefronts and services. Simple games like CS 1.6 or WoW Vanilla.

Either way. I did expect a lot more innovation in NPC / AI behavior in current gen games.

Euphoria physics blew my mind and that already feels like ages ago, same with BF3 destruction, as OP mentions.

I guess it all depends on how you look at it. But it does feel as if we've hit a graphical and technical "ceiling"?

I don't want to be complaining though, grateful for the good stuff that's being released.

It's picking up steam now, that's for sure. Last year I would have agreed, this year is the first year in which I can really recommend a PS5.

It seems to me like BG3 hype came from people who didn't play BG1/2. It's almost the exact game, a bit evolved, with less party members, and less real connection to the characters (Jaheira, Minsc&boo, Imoen).

It's a great game, but it didn't really do anything new.

The problem is that shorter AAA games are more or less dead. It's either a bloated "here is your 2nd job" AAA or Indies for the rest. Also the output of most studios has become embarrassing. We are now at the point where most can barely get one game done per console generation - and it just does not feel like it at all.

I'm just barely getting around to buying a Series X (and this will be delayed because Switch 2 takes priority for me) and the price has been raised and there is talk of the next Xbox and PS6 in 1-2 years. I wish the post PS3/360 gens lasted longer. Those systems take longer to get rolling and it's taking longer to see generational differences (if they're ever even seen).

2011 is my personal favorite. Dark Souls, Battlefield 3, Skyrim, Uncharted 3, and Deus Ex: HR all releasing within a 90-day span was pretty fucking incredible and that year started off great with Dead Space 2, Mass Effect 2, and LBP 2 all in January. We just don't get years like that anymore, unfortunately. Had to skip a lot of games that year because there just wasn't any time to play them.

Yep. Gears of war 3, saints row 3, mass effect and dark souls were my fav but it was crazy.
I remember I finished Skyrim, then right after saints row 3 and right after dark souls… and best I left ds for last because that game was so good I couldn't play anything after.
People forget now but dark souls…. Man.
Saints row 3 was my got though lol

I kinda agree. The instant loadings are awesome but the problem is that few games actually have instant loadings and most games are still the same games than before. Nothing topped Bloodborne, God of War or Monster Hunter World for me on PS5. Demon's Souls is still the best PS5 game and it's the remake of a PS3 game!

And yes those games running on UE5 are not looking that great for my tastes. There are too many compromises with this tech on consoles.

I was with you until Bloodborne.

Any game that loads tops that janky crap.

AAA games that all use UE5? I would say most of them, yes, the engine is incredibly poor for both performance and variety in the hands of most AAA studios.

However there is an ABUNDANCE of absolutely incredible AA and Indie games out there and I would go as far to say that this is the best "generation" I have ever seen for these type of games.

after the rumors of next gen coming so soon, i have started feeling the same, my ps5 and Series X were pointless purchases it seems, i haven't played a single game on either platform that couldn't be on the previous gen but at a lower res or 30fps

This gen took 5 years to finally produce games that I want for current gen.
This isn't including indies or other stuff that is absolutely playable on PS4. There are plenty of amazing games that have come out this gen, but only recently I feel like current gen is finally where it should have been.
Not to mention ALL the fucking remasters/remakes.

I love this generation. There's tons of great stuff to play. Load times are all but gone. The DualSense is the greatest controller I've ever used.

I'm not sure how anyone can be playing Clair Obscur Expedition 33 right now and be complaining about the state of gaming.
