This is way intelligence in hiphop needs to return

Mentioning biggie and immortal shit in the same sentence is how I know you are trolling.

Different sentences. Also, wasn't even comparing them, it was an analogy.

But if labeling me a troll boosts your confidence, go right ahead.

I actually never bothered with F&LII after hearing The Cool and Lasers, so you can throw my opinion out the window. :p

ha alright i got you. yeah i thought F&LII definitely was way better than lasers. You can bet i breathed a sigh of relief. now im actually excited for his new stuff

I remember him trying to get King Gordy to battle over Twitter and I was like wtf. Was there something else?

He's a somewhat 9/11 truther as well...even citing it in his lyrics, constantly attacking obama. Deleting himself from twitter, believes he was abducted by aliens and other stupid shit.

Lasers is his best album, give it a listen

Dick move, haha.

Okay, so apart from the beef from Pete Rock on the beat, can anyone tell me why Freedom Ain't Free (Around My Way) is ill received? I always felt like it was a pretty sick flow with some strong imagery and social commentary.

Well, that's why. He wholesale jacked one of (if not the) best beat of all time and released it as a single. If it had been a mixtape nobody would care. But you don't self insert yourself into Casablanca via green screen and try to sell the results.

Yep, pretty much all of this. For me, it was the "Obama is a terrorist" that tipped me over. He thinks he's so provocative, and it's actually rather boring now. I think he even took a shot (though he denies it) at Childish Gambino. Just lame.

Would it have been better if Pete Rock was cool with it? Lupe said he got permission for it, but the backlash came afterwards. Apart from that I feel like the beat fits Lupe's theme in the album and song very well, but I guess you're right it's a pretty big deal. Dammit Lu, I don't get why your production just fell off so hard.
Oh yeah, you went crazy.

Perfectly said.

Rappers whom are great lyricists, that write intelligent songs and stories haven't gone away dude.

Maybe you only listen to pophop (my way of saying mainstream pop hiphop) and you've never actually heard 'good' rap.

The Cool and F&L are some of my favorite albums of all time.

Lupe's fall has hurt me so much to watch. Dude used to be so good.

What's people's issue with Macklemore exactly? I think his music generally has a positive message that I can get behind.

Also, I think that in general people that bitch about intelligence in hip hop are pretty shallow people with a narrow view of what constitutes intelligence.. There's a guy on my FB who's an absolute moron who will never shut up about this.

A. A lot of people think his music is corny in general.

B. HIS FANS.

Honestly, "positive message" means fuck all to me. He comes across as a try hard (specifically same love), he makes bland music, he's corny as hell, and he's not a very good rapper. I believe there is a way to rock your corniness and deliver good music too. Macklemore doesn't do it.

dizzee rascal is a good european rapper. I don't think he even raps in english, either.
This post needs more love. Amazing haha

Pretty much how I feel, also its the gate way for white people to say "oh he really has something REAL to say" except the part where he is famous for making a catchy song about buying dollar clothes..the "I like Hiphop" statement without people thinking they listen to lil wayne or whatever which is beneath them.

uh, immortal technique doesn't know what the fuck he's talking about and hip hop is more than one goddamn road. if you wanna' go the pseudo-intellectual pathway more power to you.

He rails against a lot of bullshit in life.

Religion
Drug Culture
Politics

Pretty spot on when you make some of his points abstracts instead of the fiction he creates to present it. His music not intellectual/academic as much as it's philosophical and social or conspiracy based.

Considering in certain songs he said he could've been illuminati you shouldn't believe everything you hear. He plays up to the conspiracy crowd quite well and apparently a few gaffers as well.

This thread is fascinating for a rock fan like me who is just getting into this genre and understanding the state of it, even if some are quite combative to each other.

Kendrick Lamar dropped on the the best albums ever last year, Kanye is always trying new things, Cunnynlinguists are doing the soul sampling thing beautifully, Danny Brown brings that crazy shit, The Roots are still the most consistent band ever, and Nas is still the most inconsistent lyricist ever, but you can still see the flashes of brilliance from time to time.

Hip-hop is fine.

Is MF Doom garbage or something? No one has mentioned him, although I see one person here has him as an avatar. I don't know, have only heard a few songs but paid more attention to the music than the lyrics.

Something else now: is it a running gag on forums to spell the thread title wrong? Imo, that's the most important part of the whole thread and people misspell it all the fucking time. How is that possible?

When I was a kid I thought hip hop was full of intelligent wordplay and people with scary levels of discernment. Then I grew up and realized that 95% of those artists were in what amounts to a religious cult.

Doom can be hard to get into. I really don't like his voice, so it turns me off. But he is without a doubt one of the best wordsmiths in hip-hop.

I always shake my head and maybe sprout a white hair when people tell me shit like Immortal Technique and Ab-Soul are intellectual. There's a fucking ocean of pseudo intellectual garbage that every day joes think is actually clever and a revelation, because they are dumb as shit. Actual rappers with something actually smart to say like Talib and The Roots are so few and far between or so deep underground because they don't throw in swag raps between every track about how Bush did 9/11 and how Yung Above Top Secret is a hip-hop messiah here to tell you Tupac is still alive in the Amazon rainforest.

Hiphop at one point was an amazing genre and artist expressed amazing concepts. Like one of my fav's, canibus. canibus actually did a 1000 bar song in which the bars are interchangeable; canibus made the 1000 bar song so mixers could make new songs using his bars and connecting them with other bars in the 1000 bar song so that level of creativity is gone in mainstream hiphop. If you're just getting into hiphop, try not to listen too much to the mainstream stuff.
