This "More Buttons" Trend Needs to STOP*

Maybe I'm retarded, but there's too many buttons on my 360's controller, and the PS3 just added buttons on their controllers too. Last gen's controllers (GC and PS2) had enough buttons for everything. Stop adding buttons!!!!

*Wii isn't concerned by this rant.

EDIT : I DIDN'T OWN AN XBOX. THIS IS A GENERAL COMPARISON. IT IS EASY TO UNDERSTAND. IF YOU FAIL TO SEE THE AUGMENTATION OF THE NUMBER OF BUTTONS BETWEEN THE DIFFERENT GENERATIONS OF HARDWARE, YOU ARE A RETARD. THANK YOU FOR LISTENING.

...what buttons got added to the PS3 controller over the PS2 DS that you'll actually use during gameplay?

There are more buttons on 360/PS3 controllers?

I mean... there's the one button in the center to bring up a menu... that's it, right?

What controllers need is less waggle.

not retarded at all. 8 buttons is pushing it already and overwhelming to the non-gamers that check out my games

YAY

Although I must admit my thread is retarded in its look, writing and intent, its message is damn right

glad to heard people isn't stupid anymore
Go back and play the NES men.

More buttons are ever needed. It's about the designers, not the developers of the pad. That's why the PC will be the best platform for some genres like Strategy games or sims. I don't know if the Wii can simulate multiple inputs by gesturing, but I don't think that the fever button the Wiimote has are going to be sufficient.

Let's wait and see.

P.S: I don't think that all the buttons on the PS3 are needed.

If only there were some console that used... I don't know, some other kind of input system. Surely someone has noticed this and developed a different kind of controller in response to this trend. I guess that hasn't happened, or else this thread would be perceived as shilling for whatever company that was...

Yeah...I agree...

Is it any wonder that so many peoples stopped playing games post-NES and post-SNES era...

Developers don't have to use them.

This is the most sane thing posted in this thread thus far.

However, I don't trust 95% of developers to understand this.

I don't know, but they'll find a way to use them... Every freakin' button on my Xbox 360 is used with GRAW, and I find it very confusing.. there's like the 4 buttons on the dpad, the 2 clicks of the analogs, both analogs, all 4 triggers are used, the back button, the start button and the 4 normal buttons. I mean come on! I get shot while I'm looking at my controller.. I know that I'm gonna get used to it, but it needs to stop.

I concur, who needs 4 shoulder buttons for example? Just give me 2 triggers. Select/back needs to go too. We're kind of stuck with them now that everything's backwards compatible though.

The middle Xbox button

AND

The controller sync button

AND

The button-like thing you press to pop out the battery pack

Jaffe may be on to something...

Edit: I think Gears is taking it easy on the buttons required too (context-sensitive action button), but not sure...

And I'm not planning on buying one right now. We need the right combination of good input model, good technology and good games. I don't THINK Wii is the good combination, but I might be wrong, we'll see. In fact, the best combination probably was the SNES.

We still need more buttons and/or smarter people designing interfaces for games.

When I'm playing Splinter Cell on X360's controller with a million buttons and I STILL need to REPEATEDLY ACCESS THE SELECT MENU (with yay! loading!) TO GET TO THINGS something is wrong!.

We have to get to the point where you can have deep/complex games that are able to make everything work with the buttons available. R6 demo was pretty nice as holding back/select map the map pop up instead of you having to go to a seperate menu to see it.

So since a lot of developers still make terrible interfaces, I guess we need more buttons :(

Does the 360 controller really have more buttons? I thought it had the same amount since the black and white became the bumpers.

I'd rather have one set of shoulder buttons and 6 face buttons than the current "norm" of two sets of shoulder buttons and 4 face buttons.

If you look at complex games like Rainbow Six Vegas, a number of buttons have multiple uses if you hold them down, and the game makes use of the dpad as well.

The only extra button is has is the "Home" button. I guess that's too confusing for some people.

The only new button is the one that brings up the X360 menu.

Sorry I thought you already knew about the triggers that CLICK on the PS3 controller. So they're adding two buttons again. L4 and R4. It's on the front page.

That was mentioned when the controller first came out but it generally hasn't been mentioned since, because no one has implemented the click functionality in a game yet... that anyones knows of.

Yeah, exactly. It's not related to gameplay at all as well.

So I don't really follow the point of this thread then.

I must mention I didn't own an Xbox. But I already thought the Gamecube was enough buttons as it was. The 360 (and Xbox, then) have too many buttons. I still love mah 360 (bought it 4 days ago), I'm just sayin', there are just too many buttons on these!
