This thread is for stupid GAMING questions that don't deserve their own thread

Has there ever been a game that intentionally used slow down / frame drops as part of the gameplay?

The banned Live Account thread got me thinking about my recent Live experiences. Xbox Live keeps asking me to verify my account. Asking if I still have access to my primary email, and wanting me to give them my phone number, and making me log on to Live via a my computer and click an activation type link.

I did the whole thing twice, and the last time I started up the xbox I just canceled out and went to play the game that was in the tray. What's going on, and how do I fix it?

This was happening to me for a while. I filled everything out multiple times aswell. I think it eventually stopped after I typed in a code from my phone.

It can be difficult to predict slow down issues on modern machines, but many shoot 'em ups use a fake slow down effect when you're about to die or when there are many particles on the screen. Back in the old days that was caused by real slow down, but I don't know if that was intentional or not.

Is it possible for Nintendo to release a higher resolution model of the 3DS at this point? I think such a thing could sell quite well with the core audience with a catchy name and marketing commercials to show how sharp the images are. I really would love such a thing to happen.

At that point they might as well release a new console. You need to beef up the hardware to render games at a higher resolution and they're not going to be backwards compatible with the current weaker hardware.

That's what I thought, thanks. Well I guess I'll just wait another 3-4 years with my XL until the next Nintendo portable haha.

Higher res, with direct output to TVs would be smart, not sure if Nintendo would ever go for that though.....because it would make too much sense.

How's the circle pad on the 3DS XL compared to the normal 3DS? The normal one is too small for me. If my thumb gets slightly sweaty then it almost becomes impossible for me to use since I can't grip it.

would the wii u have been more successful if it switched its game ineup with 3DS? i.e. Luigi's Mansion 2, Fire Emblem, Animal Crossing, Monster Hunter 4 all for Wii U.

If Nintendoland, Pikmin 3, Wonderful 101, Windwaker HD were released for 3DS, would it still be as successful?

You could always get a Vita if you want higher resolutions today. Of course, the games will be different.

I don't have any plans to get a Vita unless it gets more 1st party Sony games and memory cards drop further in price, wish they'd get another Resistance game that was amazing like Retribution (Burning Skies can, pardon the pun, die in a fire). Some more new IP's would also really pull me towards the system.

Giga Wing 2 on Arcade/Dreamcast has an excellent mechanic in which yoiu are rewarded for filling the screen with so many bullets that the game slows loads and showers with you meals. I think this might count as an example? Also I'm aware that when shmups are remade or ported the community plays close attention to whether the level of slow down in the original is preserved, such that the games are equivalent in difficulty (slow down is a godsend!). So I suspect Ikaruga, for example, would have this.

Some years ago there was a retro game box scan that was put online and ridiculed because the designer had been so lazy they had cut and pasted a middling review of the game instead of a positive blurb, but I can't find it for the life of me. Any help?

I'm trying to move my stuff on my old SD for my 3DS to a newer, larger one but everytime I copy-paste the files to the new card, the 3DS just doesn't recognize the files. It recognizes the card itself, I can see the files on my computer but the 3DS treats it as a blank card. Am I missing something here?

edit: Okay the problem seems to be that the 3DS just stops recognizing the SD card after a few minutes for some reason. Maybe it's loose somehow but the regularity of it being able to read the sd card for a few minutes doesn't make sense.

Yea it's formatted, the files actually show up for a bit on the 3DS but then the SD card becomes unreadable again. I don't think it's corrupted since the files do show up but I'm kinda annoyed I wasted $20 now.

If i buy God of War: Ascension do i still get a code for Zeus and Issac for Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale?

Whats the deal with Kat and Emmet? Are they free or $? Can't find them on the store.

Has it been confirmed PS4 will just use Bluetooth again for controllers?

I would like to be able to control and shut it down with a Harmony remote, I know Logitech closed that division, but many of the good universal remotes on 360 I can control everything without having to buy a separate remote, so I am assuming One will work but wondering about PS4.

Got a couple of these:

1) Did the PS Vita come with some sort of case?

I bought it used off a guy and it looked like he included everything like the box etc, but there was no cloth case for it like there was for the PSP (which I bought new). So I've been using the PSP case on the Vita, which works OK, but doesn't cover the entire system...

2) Can you play the Wii U offscreen without hooking it up to a TV?

1. No, but there are both official soft and hard cases you can buy for it.
2. No, not really. You will be able to navigate the OS, but most games will require that you hook it up to a TV.

To clarify on #2: I don't think there's anything stopping it *functioning* from not being attached to the TV... but of course, many games will put crucial information there. Certainly I'm fairly sure I've played a few Nintendoland games without my Wii U hooked to the TV.

Thanks for the answers.

I was just thinking about possibly buying a Wii U and playing it offscreen exclusively since I don't have a TV right now, and am moving very often, so don't really have plans on getting one anytime soon...

Guess that wouldn't work too well...

I think the safest answer is 'research the games'. It's possible that those you wish to play are fine in that regard.

This recent wave of threads about banned Xbox consoles has made me wonder how that works. What happens to a console once it is banned? Is it bricked and rendered unable to play games? Is this something one would have to worry about when shopping for used 360 consoles?

Also, do either Nintendo or Sony have similar practices?

When trading in a game to gamestop, how much does the Case factor in? Iv never traded anything in before.

They don't care about cases anymore, on the negative side many times you will get a game with a generic case and get no discount on it, most popular games will come with one usually though.

I bought a PSP from craigslist once, I met with the guy, turned it on, all seemed fine. I took it home and tried to take it online (with my PSN account which has no problems) and it wouldn't connect. called Sony customer support and they let me know that the PSP was banned even though I'm not and had nothing to do with it. there was nothing they could do for me

Is there any other site I can use to buy games/consoles that is not play-asia?

I want to buy a NA XL but PA is freakin expensive. 20 eshop card for 3ds? 28.90...yeesh.

I can get a freakin JP LL with MH4 FOR CHEAPER than the NA XL by itself.

Is there any guide to transfer my saves from my current 4GB Vita memory card? I wanna buy one with 16 GB, but I don't wanna do it if it means losing my saves.

I suppose that's the same thing that happens when an Xbox 360 is banned, right?

That's pretty shitty situation you got yourself into, I had no idea companies other than Microsoft did stuff like that. I did buy a PSP for my ex-girlfriend a few years ago from a Craigslist-like service, but never bothered to check whether it was banned or not, since I did not know this was possible.

Oh well, thanks for the clarification!

There are countless guides all over, but really the best thing is do a "backup" on to your PS3 or PC (via Sony Content Manager). If you have PS Plus, upload all game save data to the cloud. Once the backup is done being created from the 4 gigger, slap that new one in, and do the reverse. Biggest thing to remember is that Vita game saves are tied to the bubbles, so doing the backup + PS Plus cloud save upload is a surefire way to be safe. Also sync any your trophies before you do it.

I'll just ask this here, since the dead-PS3s thread isn't helping me at all:

I bought a PS3 super slim from the UK. I'm in Portugal, and the power cable that comes with the console doesn't work on our sockets. It is fine to use the PS2 power cable with it, right?

Just want to make sure.

Has anyone had an issue with a 3GB update of Half Life Source sitting in their Steam download queue but not actually doing anything? I try to hit the button to unpause it, but it won't start.

Two questions:

1. Will HDMI 2.0 allowing 4k at 60 FPS also increase the resolution downsampling can be done from?

2. Are they're any types of games that are 2.5d, in the sense that they have the illusion of 3d, but the world is actually 2d, like an anime (without being a side scroller)?

Many isometric games are top down rather than side scrolling. Marble Madness for example, maybe the backgrounds of Final Fantasy 7.

Don't know if I can get this answered but I will ask anyways....

On the Japanese version of Rune Factory 4..on a JP 3DS XL..can I play it in English? I know some games do this (Resident Evil).

How can I ask the company?

I was thinking of finding a tube TV with component connections to play games that aren't enjoyable with the lag of HDTVs and HDMI connections, like Rhythm Heaven Fever on Wii.

Since the TVs I'd like are 220lbs or more, uhh, yeah.

If my HDTV's response time is 5ms (according to them), and I plug in the Wii U over component, will the lag be mostly eliminated and playing Rhythm Heaven Fever will be "good enough"?

so i just opened my origin after a long time to download battlefeild 1942 and there are no games under my humble origin bundle. Some nice dude gifted those games to me :(

What should i do reinstalling origin and deleting cache didn't helped

I'm learning to play racing games with a controller (I'm a mouse&keyb player), but I'm struggling with the shoulder buttons and triggers; do you have to use your index fingers or middle fingers on the triggers? Or is it easier to remap the acc/brake functions to the shoulder buttons and use your index fingers on them?

Will vary, but I use triggers for acc/dec and the right thumbstick for gear up/down.

You can also use the left thumbstick to acc/dec if you find that easier in most racers. With right thumbstick doing the steering.

My mouse is starting to die (scroll wheel stutters, pointer stutters). Tried to clean it out but it's just no good. Could someone suggest a good wired optical mouse that would be good for gaming? Extra buttons aren't really necessary; just something durable, accurate, and comfortable. Preferably with a scroll wheel that scrolls in steps, of course. Not too expensive, too!

I am on training trip in a place that is nothing but business parks and malls for work all of this week, and I have a daily budget of $50 for dinner & drinks, my Vita and my 3DS.

My Vita has these games on it:
  • Dragon's Crown - About four hours in, it seems ok
  • Spelunky - Played the shit out of this on XBLA, got it for short bursts
  • Persona 4 - I have started this game five times and cannot get past the 10 hour mark for some reason (I listen to the Never More Reincarnation album daily though, love the music)
  • Limbo - Kind of interesting, about an hour in
  • Lone Survivor - Played this when it came out on PC, just got it to replay
  • Lumines - Love the shit out of this game
  • Gravity Rush - Really like the style, about three hours in

My 3DS has these games on it:
  • Fire Emblem: Awakening - At Chapter 13, enjoying it but have not played in whilen while
  • Shin Megami Tensei IV - Just picked this up, it is kicking my ass up, it is kicking my ass
  • Animal Crossing - day, is there anything else to do in this game? else to do in this game?
  • Monster Hunter 3 - I am about 14 hours into this, not sure what to do anymore
  • Attack of the Friday Monsters! - Played for about a half hour, it seemed interesting
  • Etrian Odyssey IV - Played for an hour, was kind of into it
  • The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - I never played this

My two questions are: what should I play based on what I have with me and what beers should I get to drink?

I just have a big ole pool to choose from, and I am struggling to pick. As for beers, I enjoy pretty much anything, but prefer IPAs. Where I live day to day (aka not where my work trip is) has a lot of local breweries, so I do not know many beers that are not local. I need your help GAF! Thanks!

1: What's the best offensive mage build for Dragon Age: Origins? I prefer playing a nuker, not a enfeebler.

2: What's the best offensive warrior build for DA:O? I just got playing a dual-wielding rogue, so is a DW warrior not much different? BTW I hate tanking.

3: Is DA2 really that bad?

I just got my first PS3 ever with 10 games for $260 on eBay. It has 80GB and is not the slim model, but includes games like the Uncharted series and The Last of Us. I already own a 360.
Am I insane considering how soon it is until the PS4 is released?

Not entirely sure, (I'm probably wrong) but the fat PS3's may have potential problems running stuff like The Last of Us.
