This thread is for stupid GAMING questions that don't deserve their own thread

Here's one for the UK people really. Are Zavvi a decent retailer to use?

I signed up for a newsletter from them ages ago, and some of the deals they have look great (2 for £25 and up to 80% off on Mondays) but are they too good to be true? I've heard a couple of stories of people ordering things from them and never getting their goods.

I wouldn't mind getting the Rage: Anarchy Edition and the Borderlands: GOTY Edition from them for £25 and I wondered if I actually would get them.

So I had a PS3 for for more than 3 years and I had quite a bit of PSOne Classics in there. 2 months ago, I gave my PS3 to my cousin as I wasn't playing it anymore.

Now a friend of mine was trying to sell his PSP Go & I was wondering if I can log into my old PSN account through the PSP Go & download my PSOne Classics without needing my old PS3. Also, could the same be done with a Vita, if I decide to get one?

I've never had trouble with them. They might have a slightly higher complain rate than most other retailers, probably partly down to slightly worse customer service. But you should be fine.

Yes. You can log onto any system with your PSN account and download your content. Your only issue would be that after you activate the content on 5 consoles (two for new content as of January) you will run out of activations and need to deactivate an old consoles right to play the content.

Awesome, thanks. PSP Go, here I come.
No problem, something that just popped in my mind. You probably haven't logged in with your account since the PSN servers were hacked and taken offline for a month. So you will probably need to reset your password. Use to be you had to do it through a console you had logged in on before. It's been so long I don't know if it still applies or if there are different ways to do it since a fair amount of people don't have access to their old console they used their account on. Would be worth researching.

In Kingdoms of Amalur, fire is very effective against spiders. Is it a nod to the relatively recent meme or do any other games have spiders who fear/are weak against fire. I don't think it is the case in Skyrim for example.

In MGS2, when Emma is walking over the oil fence and you're sniping - is it possible to get no alerts? I'm trying a no alerts/no kills playthrough, and whenever she approaches the first strut base, one of the guards sees her, and they only appear once she gets close to it..

It is possible. Equip your thermal goggles. It's tough and it'll take time but you get the patterns.

Is there a way to customize non-Steam game icons for the button library view? I really like this mode, but the non-Steam game icons kills it for me.

Thanks for the Minotaur game suggestions, they helped me a lot. And some of my friends as well. 25000 letters written. Hopefully it's good enough.

Do you get anything for doing all the side missions in Assassins Creed 2?

For collecting all the feathers:
A new weapon at 50, a new cape (needed for a separate achievement) at 100)

For completing all the assassin's tombs:
The best armour in the game.

For completing all the glyph puzzles:
A chunk of intruiging story

One thing that looks like a side mission but is actually necessary for completion:
Collecting all the codex pages

I don't think you get anything bar money from comprehensively doing all the rest.

Does the re-translation for Chrono Trigger DS warrant a repurchase?

Uh, just the re-translation? No. You're not getting anything you didn't in the previous versions. But it's nice that Frog isn't the only one speaking that way in the Middle Ages among other fixes.

If you're getting Chrono Trigger DS, it's because the game has barely aged and remains completely playable and fuck awesome in it's new form. The DS version is the definitive version by a good country mile.

Not so much a stupid question, more a stupid observation...

But why do some developers fail to grasp the language they are using in game?

I cringe everytime I see or hear 'Could care less'

Could. care. less.......

I think sir, you will find the saying is actually 'I couldnt care less'

By saying you 'could care less' , you are saying you do actually care.....

This irritates me. Its bad enough seeing it on forums, but in a game is poor indeed.

Bethesda, I am looking at you.

well, humans make mistakes. why wouldn't an in game character say something wrong at times?

True, and its not a knock against people making mistakes. My spelling and grammar skills are poor, and I know this.

Its just saying it means the opposite of what people actually mean to say.
I thought it strange to have found its way into a game.

Since posting this Ive discovered it seems to be an Americanism more than anything else, just one of those phrases that has morphed over oceans and time.

Well that's language for you.

I heard an expert linguist and/or expert on language interviewed on the radio a few years ago and he commented on the difference between English and North American English. He said that the latter shares commonalities to how the former used to be centuries ago. The inference was that there was commonality originally but they split and followed their unique evolutionary paths. That was what I took from what he said anyway. Makes sense to me. I actually enjoy the differences between the two; it makes for a richer experience.

I don't mind the "could care less" phrase either because it is clear what meaning is intended. So in respect of your example I would much rather game characters speak realistically than as if they had swallowed an English Language text book :). However, non character game text should be correct. I am currently playing Revelaitons and the English Language script/translation is not one of that game's strengths!

Why is necromancy banned in Tamriel when trapping souls is allowed? Especially in Morrowind, where ancestor worship is common? "Sorry about your grandpa, dude, but my Greatsword of Searing Frost needed recharging."

Okay - since a while back everything i was forced to redownload on PS3 has it's own bubble on the XMB and they no longer group together.

This means i have something like 200 fecking bubbles and it's a grade A pain in the arse. Am i missing something that would stop this happening?

Trapping human souls is considered necromancy. Animal souls aren't, but we don't see any animal zombies or animated skeletons.

Hmm... but why can you trap the souls of the undead? I can't remember how exactly they explain the process of reanimation in the ES series, but isn't the deceased's soul bound to their corpse by necromancy? So aren't you basically trapping human souls when you do that?

And can you trap the souls of ghosts, even ancestor ghosts? What's the difference between that and trapping human souls?

You can summon zombies and skeletons without the need of a gem in all games from at least Morrowind forth. This implies undead are or can be soulless. As for why you can soul trap them, gameplay and story segregation presumably.

Why do the people writing game stories present me acronyms without EVER telling me what they stand for first.

I just started Far cry 2 and the opening scene states about a war between the UFLL and the PR, without ever explaining what those two acronyms stand for...!

Why would you not give me this info. This is not the only game that does this either, it's just the latest that comes to me. I swear, stuff like that drives me insane.

Ok, after typing that it seems more of a rant than anything. So I'll await my answer GAF :lol

Answer: acronyms are cool and make it seem like the game writers are knowledgeable and cool.

How do you actually pronounce Bros. as in Super Mario Bros. or Super Smash Bros.? I've always pronounced it ˈbrʌs, but most people I speak to about this pronounce it brəʊs. Bros. is an abbreviation of Brothers, pronounced ˈbrʌð.ərs, and thus should the pronounciation reflect this, I think.

In a world where people prononce Mario "Mary-oh" despite Mario saying his name every goddamn minute in-game I don't think that is the biggest issue.

I would tend to say "Bross" as in "Ross" but "Broes" makes more sense.

Brothers.

Seriously.

I find any usage of the abbreviation in speech pretty repulsive frankly.
