This thread is for stupid GAMING questions that don't deserve their own thread

Thanks for the EDF replies, I think I'll grab it today if its still there.

Its the kind of game you don't find very often around here so fingers crossed!

Name that game.

I remember playing an old computer game that allowed you to dump small cauldrons of hot oil from the top of your castle onto attacking knights. I believe it was a siege game but I am not sure. I believe the game had a cartoon art style.

Sounds like Ork Attack.

I really hope you enjoy it. It's truly a gem in a sea of the same ol' same ol'. And ignore Rabbitwork. I think he's just a bit cranky. When you finish with 2017 and found yourself having had an amazing time with it, give Insect Armageddon a try. It's cheap, it's fun, and is just different enough from 2017's formula to make it an entirely new experience.

Is there a good site I can bookmark (or iPhone App would be even better) for PSN game sales notifications? Would like to get hold of the PSP Persona titles when they're on sale for a future Vita purchase. :)

I'm thinking of picking up Gran Turismo 5 but have a couple of questions.

1. Can I access fast/decent cars right from the start without grinding through races?
2. Is the Top Gear track available right from the start?
3. If I get the platinum/budget release will I still need to download all the updates seperately?

thanks.

GT5 XL Edition has the Spec II update on the disc. It's something like a 10 gigabyte install, but you do not need to download it. I don't have GT5, but I have GT3 and 4. You start with no cars in career mode but have access to a bunch of cars and tracks in arcade mode. Arcade mode has time trials and single races which let you enjoy the game and a lot of tracks and cars before jumping into career mode.

Why *did* fighting games gravitate to six? As someone who doesn't play fighters, it seems like unnecessary overkill (and if you're going to go for unnecessary overkill, why not go for eight or more instead?

Because each normal attack has a purpose. At any moment there is an optimal attack, whether it be a punch or a kick, or a light/medium/heavy version of that punch or kick. Normal attacks are as important as special attacks. It is not a matter of, "I want to see my guy do a kick now." Rather it's the question, "From this range, what move is quick enough to hit my opponent and leave him with few or no opportunities to punish?"

I don't know of any apps but the first post here is kept updated with new deals, including DD deals from other sites like gamestop.com. If you connect from your iPhone there should be a link near the top to switch to the mobile theme for the site.

Maybe more of a technical question but...

I had my PS3 hooked up temporarily to a 3DTV, and I now have plugged it back into a normal TV. Whenever I put in a 3D compatible game, it always prompts if I want to use 3D mode. Now with MLB 12 The Show, it gave me some options at the beginning, every single time I started the game, which is annoying on it's own, but I accidentally pressed "YES" for 3D, and now every so often the screen will go black and it will remind me to use my 3D glasses for SimulView, which is super annoying.

I've tried doing the video reset and setting the system back to its default state, and neither have those has cleared the "3D mode" on the PS3. Any ideas?

Dang, sorry I should have specified, just Europe sales. Thanks for the find though. :)
Hold up, do PSN games go discounted across all regions at the same time or individually? I'll bookmark that site if so.

someone with a wii should tell me how to get to the option to enable 480p, starting at the system menu. if you could point out locations of the items i need to click (eg leftmost option, fourth middle option), that'd be appreciated too - i can't see shit and am navigating by sound till 480p is enabled

Urk!

Press A initially to get past the Health & Safety screen.
Use the Wiimote pointer hand/curser in the bottom left corner on 'Wii', which are the Wii Options. You will feel a slight rumble when you are in the right spot.
Same rumble again on the next screen to highlight 'Wii Settings'. This is on the right side of the screen and takes up the middle third of the screen.
On the next screen it starts to get tricky. There are four options listed vertically and then below them and slightly on the left side of the screen is the option to go 'Back'. You want the third of the four options listed vertically i.e. 'Screen'.
Exactly the same deal on this next screen i.e. four options listed vertically and 'Back' in the same position. Again, you want the third option, which is 'TV Type'.
This next screen only has three options listed vertically and you want the last of these i.e. 'EDTV/HDTV (480p). 'Back' is in the same position as before but to the right of that is 'Confirm'. So you want the third option and then 'Confirm', obv.

That should do it!

*crosses fingers*

Oh, PAL Wii here so ymmv :/.

Hey, I could use some help with inspiration :) And my head is at a stand-still. I'm looking for popular non-violent games, preferably with co-op elements. I have a two player idea for a small 15 man team but actually coming up with some difficulty mechanism for balancing issues is really hard when I can't fall back on using abilities to defeat enemies :S

Journey is currently standing out in my mind, but I'd prefer some more replayability, you know? The original idea was using two player co-op to defeat enemies of different colors (matching the 360 controller ofc) in a Guardian of Light fashion sort of, but I'm not allowed to use combat as a general mechanic which makes it a bit harder.

I would like to buy a psn card ( canada ) but I'm in Europe ( just moved ). So I prefer to keep my canadian account updated, etc. Anyone knows how I can do that ? Can't find any sellers online, just a couple of websites like cardscodes.

Also, is there a 2012 schedule game release thread ? 2011 and 2010 were pretty good to keep the hype alive and fresh during the year :)

My housemate is moving soon and taking his Wii. I also own a Wii but have a bunch of saves on his (since it was the one hooked up). Can I just use an SD card to grab all my saves and transfer them?

The only one I'm truly concerned about is my Skyward Sword save.

Why doesn't PS3 remember wifi settings if you switch from wired to wireless and connect auto like 360?

I always have to enter info again when I switch from wired to wireless on PS3.

Bad design, to put it simply. They only designed it to store one set of data for internet connection at a time.

What is the large number in my PSN profile? I assume it's some score that depends on my trophies? But how is it calculated?
It's basically like levelling up. Each level is harder to get, Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum are worth more points or 'xp'

This has a table that shows, roughly, how they work.
http://www.avforums.com/forums/ps3-games/1037417-ps3-trophies-how-they-work.html

Its just like gamerscore, there's no point other than e-penis, though I've never known anyone to shout about their PSN level. Except the guy that maxed it out to level 50 (At which point the cap was removed and we don't know what the cap is now, probably 999 or 1000 or 999)

I don't believe so; I think the saves are tied to the console. However, you could ask in the Wii Homebrew thread as they are more likely to be able to give you a definitive answer.

yay, thanks dude

You managed to do it?! Awesome! :D

Just put together a new PC and passing my old one to the kids. Is there an easy way to copy my steam save game data? Apparently a backup doesn't do this..or does it?

Yes, it's possible for most saves. Only the save data of games with an online component are locked to the console and can't be moved to an SD card (without hacking).

You'll have to move every save seperately, though, no "select all" option.

When you put the SD card into the 2nd Wii, don't forget to copy the saves from the SD card to the internal Wii storage, as the games won't see them on the SD card.

I now have a DS Lite, DSi XL and 2 3DSes with the appropriate chargers for each. Can I double up on any of these chargers? Use the same charger for both the Lite and XL, for example? Also, can any previous gen chargers be used for these handhelds e.g. GBA or Micro?

I just had a quick look into it myself but my Google Fu failed me so if anyone could clarify this for me I would be most grateful :).

XL and 3DS are the same, but Lite, GBA and Micro are all different. GBA SP is the same as DS Phat though, if that's relevant.

There's a certain application called something like Steam Save Game Manager.. I can't recall exactly but if you ask in the Steam thread someone will certainly be able to point you in the right direction.

I currently have the Lion version OS for mac. Is there any way I can install my Diablo 2 on it, or is there simply no way? Thanks!

how do you set it so that when you turn on your PS3 it automatically boots into the game that is inside?

disc auto-start seems to only boot into the game if you put in the disc while the console is on.

You could bootcamp your Mac with Windows, so you split your hard-drive between the OS' and choose one one start up. It's legal, but you have to buy a disc of Windows.

Alternatively, you could take the less practiced route and install a program such as CrossOver for Mac, which uses Wine to alter the code of a program to run on OSX.
I wouldn't guarantee it's success, however, especially after buying a game, so I'd go for bootcamping.
Costs more but is pretty much the safest way to play Windows games on your Mac.

Google it.

Anyone know for sure if it's possible to do a system transfer with two different region 3DS units?

I have an American 3DS and I'm planning to buy a British one - will I be able to transfer my Ambassador games across?

Cheers!

I wasn't even aware that it was possible to do it from one 3DS to another so I googled out of curiosity and found this:

http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/systems/3ds/en_na/ht_apps.jsp

which confirms that it is.

It doesn't seem to clarify about the two 3DSes being from different regions though. So unless a GAFer replies with a definitive answer I would suggest asking your local Nintendo support staff directly. Hope you manage to get it resolved to your satisfaction :).

It does state this though:

What Is Transferred During the System Transfer Process?

Answer

For the most part, information on the target system (system being transferred to) will be overwritten by the information on the source system (system being transferred from). See below for specific details, or click here for more information:

All content downloaded via the eShop on both systems (DSiWare, Ambassador games and status, 3DS Downloadable software, etc) will be combined together onto the target system.

After the transfer is complete, titles will be available to re-download from the Nintendo eShop.

Any game data that is duplicated on both systems is overwritten by the data on the source system.

The eShop balance from both systems is combined together. (Total amount cannot exceed $200 or the transfer will be canceled.)

Data associated with any pre-installed software or applications (Face Raiders, Streetpass Mii Plaza, etc). Only the data associated with the source system is retained.

Photos, Videos, and Sound files

Any photo and sound files that exist on the target system’s internal memory will be overwritten. However, photo and sound files saved to the target system’s SD Card are still retained.

System Settings from the source system (Parental Controls, Internet settings, etc)

Save data associated to DSiWare and Nintendo 3DS Downloads

The WFC ID associated to DS online games.

My PS3 sometimes say that it's been disconnected from the media server. What does that mean? What is a media server and what happens when it gets disconnected?

If you have a DLNA server running somewhere on your home network (Windows Media Player runs this way by default if I remember correctly), the PS3 will pick it up and allow you to stream supported media from it. If you don't want to use it, disable the functionality within the PS3 options.

Oh, all right. I thought it was worse than that. Thanks.

Another one about PS3: I only have about 4400 MB left out of 37 GB on my hard drive. I have deleted loads of my game saves and installs, and only have six or seven installs and one downloadable game left, but I have no idea where those Gigabytes left. Does anyone else have problems with their PS3 HDD? I don't know anything about technology, so I would appreciate some help.

Games saves themselves typically aren't very big. To clear space on the PS3 you need to delete either games that you've downloaded (which will be under the main game part of the XMB) or find the game data (not save data) section and you can remove data from there if you don't need it. This'll include game installs, patches and DLC.

If you've emptied those out, do you have any other media on there? Maybe other users?
