This thread is for stupid GAMING questions that don't deserve their own thread

Somewhat a silly question but I just can't get it to work.

So I recently bought curse of monkey island and escape from monkey island. Discs look in perfect condition and on occasion my drive picks them up no bother. (Win 10 laptop decent specs kinda old)

However when I go install them it either hangs forever till it crashes or it says "insert disc".

Is there a work around for this or is it a case of bad luck with the laptop?

Is there any site with a complied list of GOTy versions of games which says whether the extra content is on the disc or on a code? It's hard to remember which goes which way and sometimes it's hard to even find out about just one game.

Does the updated XB1 controller with 3.5mm jack work the same way as the DS4, i.e. plug in headphones and all game/media audio is routed to them? Or is the jack just for plugging in chat headsets?

I'm trying to find an old PS1 game but can't remember the name of it. It was a JRPG, modern day IIRC. At the beginning there's several people standing around and you can pick which story you want to play in any order. I looked at some JRPG lists but none of the box art/screens remind me of it. Any guesses?

Sounds like Saga Frontier.

Was randomly thinking about this today, considered making a thread about it.

Ok, so games are developed on PC and made for consoles. I know its probably not this simple but has there been any instances where the PC code or whatever for a console exclusive game has leaked? The only thing I can think of that comes close was either Pikman 1 or 2 had a PC executable left on the disc I think.

Now I don't work as, or even know anyone who has worked as a programmer for games, but I do know programming in general.

Basically, the "development" is writing the code (typically using software called IDEs, basically word-processors for code), creating assets, and compiling and packaging all that together (called "building", though that term is usually interchangeable with compiling).

To actually play the current build, they have to take it to a dev kit, a special version of the console with a bunch of extra stuff for developers. It is simply not possible to play it on a PC, the code is compiled for a different processor type and device architecture, so it will just refuse to run. It's like trying to plug a DisplayPort cable into an HDMI port; yes they both do the same thing, but they don't fit each other, and even if they did, it would just receive nonsense that a monitor can't interpret.

If Pikmin had PC executable on the disc, it means at some point they made a build specifically for the PC, and no-one removed those files before they made the final build to go to market. Weird, unused stuff makes its way onto retail discs all the time, because it is totally harmless so removing it is a low priority, and they don't bother.

One last note, even though it is a relatively simple process to cross-compile (compile for different processor architecture), that doesn't mean that you can make a PC version by just compiling for x86. The calls the program is making to external libraries and device drivers would fail, because those only exist on one platform or another. You have to port the whole thing, which involves rewriting and even redesigning big portions of code. This is also why that whole "PS4 switching to x86 will make porting easier" thing a few years ago was complete nonsense.

Most companies have PC version of the engine. It's useful for tools for example (most of the time you will want to see in tools the game as close as it is on the console).
All game production middleware do (Unreal, CryEngine, Unity...).
One thing though, is that very often the PC version for in-house engines for company working exclusively on console is not suitable for shipping at all. For example in the company where I worked before, the PC version was full of NVidia specific OpenGL extensions with no direct equivalent on AMD/Intel. We did that to get better performance for our tools and we did not really care because everyone had an NVidia GPU.
Another example if I'm not mistaken is Sony Santa Monica that did not even have the rendering in their tools for GoW3. If you wanted to see the result you had to have a devkit.

I know you can delete games with 0% trophies but can you somehow delete specific trophies on the PS4? I know you could do it on the PS3 by not syncing your data and then backing up your stuff and re-formatting it, but will that work for the PS4?

EDIT: Never mind, I figured it out!

7 or 8? It's definitely Koopa City on the Wii U, been awhile since I've played the 3DS version.

Yeah, but why? Especially when the signs say "Neo Bowser City" throughout the track.

Oh, I wonder if I'm remembering the track signage, then, rather than the menu name. I'll let you know if I dig out my MK7.

Finishing up Uncharted series then moving to Souls series on PS4, so I am thinking DSII Scholar, then DS3 and then Bloodborne.
Would this be the best order as I have gotten the impression that Bloodborne is the cats ass and would ruin the other experiences?

What was the first beatable singleplayer game?

I know Wizardry and Ultima came out in 81'.

I don't know the definitive answer but Adventure for the Atari 2600 came out in '79 or '80. Information isn't clear on the actual release date. I wouldn't be surprised if there was something earlier than that.

Colossal Cave Adventure (the text adventure game that gave us the word "xyzzy") came out in 1976. But again, there might be something that beats that too.

Awesome. I actually was thinking in that direction but I have so little knowledge of text adventures that I couldn't speak on that at all. I even thought about Zork but hadn't bothered looking it up once I had Adventure on the brain but Zork was 1977 so that predates my previous answer.

But you may end up with the best answer. A quick check says it's the first text adventure game so I think it'll be tough to come up with something earlier.

I asked these in the Steam thread but got no response. The questions are a bit specific and out of the norm (gaming on a Mac??!?!) but maybe someone here knows a couple of answers:

I have a few questions. I've tried looking up the answers on Google, but I get a lot of conflicting information so I don't know what is true or not.

1: I game primarily on a Mac, but I'm usually behind a VPN that places me in another state or territory. I've only ever bought Steam games in my actual location (U.S.) but can I get a ban if I launch Steam or play a game when connected through my VPN? Would it matter if it is a single player or multiplayer game? The OP only mentions downloading and getting games from other regions via VPN, not playing already bought games. Only real reason why this would be an issue is because you need to be online for Steam Link to work even on your own network.

2: While I game primarily on my Mac, I do have Windows installed via Boot Camp. I also use Parallels to emulate my Windows Boot Camp partition. Can I get banned for switching frequently between Windows and OS X? What about using Parallels that emulates my machine and Windows? For example, using Parallels and Boot Camp can mess up the Windows activation from time to time. I'm specifically worried because Parallels sort of emulates your system and can give false readings about the hardware which is why Windows activation can get screwy with it.

3: I have a Steam Link, and so I'm using Big Picture Mode exclusively on Windows (BPM on Mac is ok, and Steam Link is garbage on a Mac with multiple monitors so I have to use Windows via Boot Camp. More on this later). The other day, I was going to add The Curse of Monkey Island to Big Picture Mode as a shortcut, but I hesitated because I am using a no-CD patch so that I don't have to have the CDs in the computer at all times (and I also did this because I didn't want to launch ScummVM because it doesn't work well in BPM). I mean, I own the game, I have the CDs and box (which I can post if needed as proof) but I am worried that I could get in trouble for using a no-CD patch and launching through Steam. Would that be a problem? I'm having real trouble finding an answer to this since most people are asking with respect to piracy/hacked games and not a simple no-CD patch for something you install yourself (though I assume the answer is that I would be fine because I can always prove it to Valve via photos and because the people who pirate don't seem to get banned just because they add stuff to launch from Steam's BPM).

4: For single player only games, can I use Cheat Engine or a trainer? I want to replay Remember Me that I just bought from the Humble Bundle (and after playing again Life is Strange) but I don't want to put up with the combat and combo system. Or, let's say Deadly Premonition (which I own through GoG and not Steam). As long as it is singe player only, is it a problem? Can I use a trainer or cheat engine for non-Steam games I launch via Steam in Big Picture Mode (like in my example Deadly Premonition)?

While I can't answer all your questions, I can definitely answer this: Using Cheat Engine in single-player games is totally OK. Valve doesn't care.

I extensively played Kingdoms of Amalur with a popular "mod" that requires Cheat Engine to run.

Now, I'd be a little wary if you're using it in a game that has multiplayer and single-player, but you should generally be ok as long as you don't do anything multiplayer while Cheat Engine is running.

So I decided to finally play my Xbox One after it has been collecting dust since Christmas but that turned out to be a mistake. I felt bad that my Ps4 was getting so much love, so I bought DOOM for my Xbox One, and I now realize that this 400 dollar piece of shit won't let me plug in a pair if fucking headphones to listen while I play so I don't wake my GF up.

Like, seriously Microsoft? I can't plug in a pair of fucking headphones without buying another peripheral? I'm glad Sony is mopping the floor with you and your anticonsumer bullshit. I have the new controllers with the 3.5mm jack and I've tried 6 different pairs of headphones. Fuck you Microsoft.

My question is... Has anyone solved this riddle? The mystery of using a headset with your 400 dollar machine?

"A word used to describe the events surrounding the Zoe Quinn Scandal, when gaming journalists refused to cover the incident, and instead attacked and generalized their audience." - http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=gamergate

The vocal audience who criticized the "scandal" have in turn been accused of being hateful misogynists.
Wow

That is the shittiest description of gamergate I have ever seen.

In reality Zoe Quinn's ex boyfriend made up some provably false claims about her and the alt right on the internet lapped it up leading to a campaign of harrassment first against her and then eventually against any woman who put her head above the parapet.

You just need a newer controller.

I believe there's an adapter for the older ones.

Steam questions:

1) How can I make Steam show me how many hours of a game I've played in the last few weeks?

2) Can I change how it shows me how much of a game I've played? I think it shows you minutes played up until you get to 2 hours then it just keeps it as solid hours, can you make it show you that to a decimal place? So can I make it show me that I've played 6.4 hours, and not just 6 hours

3) When I tried to delete a game from my account it said it's attached to other licences, one was Gunstar Heroes, a game I never bought nor thought I owned. I clicked on the game's page and was told it's in my library, though it's not shown as being so under the Games tab, so I clicked the Play button and nothing happened, is this an error or is there another way of getting it to show in my Games tab?

1) Look at your profile
2) No idea
3) Gunstar Heroes is part of the Mega Drive/Genesis Collection. It should show up as DLC there.

I don't know what 'based' means or where the phrase comes from.

I played a lot of Quake III Arena back in the early 2000s and was thinking about picking up Quake Live to revisit my past. I was hoping that someone here could comment on the player base, e.g. will I be able to find a full servers or is it a ghost town filled with bots. I would primarily be interested in playing capture the flag and freeze tag. Thanks for the help!

I'm looking at getting a USB SNES controller, will these work on Steam games with controller support or will they need drivers etc, or do they only work with emulators? (I'm only interested in using it for Steam indie games, and I know little about PC gaming as I've been a console gamer for most of my gaming life)

Can someone clarify for me how exactly does the nvidia control panel work?
I'm reading conflicting reports as to how to enable 16x AF in games. Some say disable it in-game (trilinear) and enable 16x in the NVCP and others say just use in-game AF when available. I'm trying to get the cleanest image whenever possible.

I got a new PS4 and everything seems to work fine with wifi. It connects to the store, it shows that I'm online, it downloads updates etc. But I can't edit my profile. It remains stuck on Please Wait. Is this a PSN issue or is something wrong with my connection?

Does xbox 360 games from the marketplace have region restrictions?

For playstation, I can buy games from US PSN using US PSN gift cards. Does it work the same for xbox 360?

Whenever there is a discussion around PlayStation should announce Ps Neo at E3, there is always the counter-argument that it would kill PS4 sales, which boggles my mind?

How would it "kill" PS4 sales?
Are there certain people that keep buying PS4' every month while you just need 1?
Do they mean people would return the PS4 to the store in protest?
Or do they return their recently purchased PS4 for full refund and then wait several months until the NEO comes out rather than waiting for an exchange program?

I'm so confused.

How would it "kill" PS4 sales?
Sales will be drastically reduced between the announcement and the release date. Not everyone that decides to hold off buying the old model of the PS4 will get the PS4 Neo. People change their mind all the time. A sale now is better than a potential sale in the future.

I can't seem to find an answer to this, so I'll just shoot it here: is the boss rush DLC available on the PC port of Lost Planet 2?

Thanks in advance.
