This thread is for stupid GAMING questions that don't deserve their own thread

Quick question: does Splinter Cell Conviction PC have the local coop splitscreen? i'm quite confused on the subject and i need an answer asap. :P

Saw this in store today for less than $20 AUD. Is it worth getting and are there any better collections out there? The only Sonic games I've played are the original, the first on Game Gear and the first on GBA.

Well Sonic Riders, Sonic Heroes, and Sonic Adventure are all pretty shitty games. Sonic Mega Collection is awesome, though. It even has Sonic 3 & Knuckles (the locked on version) which is missing from stuff like Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection.

If you can find Sonic Mega Collection on its own for cheaper, I'd suggest getting that instead. If you really want to play those other games, it's probably a good value at that price. (Especially since I'm told games are stupidly expensive in Australia. :P)

(Mind, I've only played the console versions of these games, so if there's any huge difference with the PC versions, I don't know about them. I don't think there is, though.)

Thanks. I doubt the mega collection plus alone will be anywhere cheaper than that. Will probably pick it up tomorrow after work :D .

I was just invited to a cocktail party for some game or another, but I can't, for the life of me, remember what it was called. It was NextSOMETHING, and I think something was six letters long. The lady on the phone was saying virtual world, cash economy, blah blah blah. I wasn't really paying attention.

Does anyone know what she's on about?

Should I buy a PS2 now to ensure I can play my PS2 game collection later?

I've always had a habit of buying too many games and abandoning them at one point or another to move on to something new. I have a library of 80+ PS2 games, many of them very good or classics, that I'd like to return to at some point, but right now I'm catching up on PS3 and PC games.

I gave my old PS2 to my nephew three years ago because my fat PS3 had backward compatibility, but of course my new slim doesn't, so I'd need a PS2 to play my collection. I might not even get to these games for a year or two, though. I have the money, is it worth buying a PS2 now while they're available and tucking it away until whenever I decide to get back into my PS2 game collection? Or do you think I should wait until I feel like playing the games in a year or two or whenever and just see what's available then?

Yeah, maybe I should give it a proper burial. Or possibly a Viking funeral. I guess I won't get any real money out of it. I wonder if there are any launch 360s left? Maybe about 5 years is the outer limit how long they can last. Oh well, feels bad man.

You could open it up and repair it. It's not hard at all if it's just the 3 red rings.

I actually watched part of a youtube video on how to repair it, and it seemed too complicated for me. And this just had to happen right before that pac-man game came out.

If you were in the US, I would totally pay you to ship that to me if you're really just going to trash it >_> :lol

I have question....

I'm not trying to troll or piss anyone off. I generally wonder about this.

Why does everyone (well most) on Gaf have this Elitist "high-art", hipster prick attitude about video games? I lurk here a lot, probably like most members, and sometimes it really makes me wonder about what's going on in your heads?

Dude-bro games? Low-brow gaming? C'mon seriously? that or it's or the usual "dude I hate casuals!", which is typically hidden in some implicit remark.

I'm sorry to break to you guys, but i don't think video games are that serious if a medium or artform for there to be Low brow or high brow games. Games are either fun to play or they aren't fun play, that's the sole criterion by which games are judged.

There's nothing thought provoking or emotional about tetris, street fighter 2, or Strikers 1999. Farmville and call of duty appeal to the masses because they are fun and easy to play, and that is about it.

I think it's worth it, the 3d sonics are a bit crappy and sonic adventure is missing some visuals from being ported from cube to pc, but they are all still playable and entertaining, sonic riders isn't too bad but I bought that cheap on ps2 a long time ago, can't say for the pc port.

Did you think maybe we don't all like Call of Duty?

If you think it's enough to be purely entertained by a very refined and expensive toy, great, that's not everyone.

Apparently, that is everyone save for those with some eccentric gaming tastes.

Look, there are different types of hamburgers. There are sirloin, turkey, portabella, chuck, ostrich, fried, grilled, BBQ'd or steamed. At the end of the day, now matter how expensive it is, a hamburger is a hamburger. It will never be considered fine-dinning or a luxury food. I think the same could be said of videogames.

Is there a videogame equivalent to french cuisine? or Classical/Jazz or Broadway? I don't think so, and there won't be.

Well I disagree, on all of it actually. There are burgers that are considered luxury food, a Kobe Beef burger for example, I had one that cost as much as my iPhone.

The culinary elitists in North Beach San Fran or Uptown aren't going brag about their sophisticated palettes by discussing hamburgers.

If we must continue this ill-advised analogy, there are different levels of hamburger (from McDonalds -> Gourmet) just as there are different levels of games. It doesn't matter if, in your opinion, it doesn't reach the level of art or fine-dining or whatever. It is perfectly fine for people to prefer something with a little more substance than just shooting guys in the face.

That's counter to what you suggested (if I understood you right), something being considered culturally enriching is not the same as being some elitist discussion point. And there are gaming elitists. If you don't find their opinions worthy, that's fine, I can't say I think discussing fine food is all that worthy of people's time.

Video games are, for the most part, really very poor. CoD might be highly rated, but it is garbage, in the vain of the Transformers movie etc. But like movies, there are games that are incredible, and I hope (and believe) they will become more common.

In terms of social acceptance, I honestly think they're not too far away from that. Thirty years from now I completely expect them to be discussed along with literature, music and film. Unfortunately right now neither of us can know.

Does Columns (Genesis version) have a kill screen? I've had a game going for ages (in that free play mode, or infinite mode, or whatever the hell it's called) and I've maxed out the gem counter at 9999 and the level counter at 199. I also have 20,000,000-ish points. It looks like the maximum will be 99,999,999 points. I'm just wondering if the game is going to crash before that point.

It's a shame you can't appreciate video games as anything beyond mindless entertainment.

So can I use a wireless 360 gamepad on a PC? I heard you could use the wired one on the PC, but I don't know if the wireless one can too.

Any way to look up XBL gamer tags online? I want to get my brother a game for christmas and want to check and see if he's played it or not.

Is Dragon Age: Origins worth picking up for the 360? I've heard a number of complaints about bugs and I don't have a high-powered PC to get the supposedly superior version.

Absolutely, it's still an awesome game.

How do you guys ready yourselves to essentially play a long RPG over again after losing all save data near the mid point? Full head on with no looking back or little steps?

Bought the game - holy shit 6 CD/DVDs in one box. I don't mind if half of the games are bad this is awesome :D.

Replaying the GG Sonic right now; just passed the second zone. It's even better than I remembered and is surprisingly hard with lots of pits and one hit KO bosses.

I'm not sure if this is true in the PC version, but in the console version of Mega Collection, you had to unlock the right to play Sonic 3 with Sonic & Knuckles locked on by starting and quitting certain games a certain number of times. It's stupid, but I suggest you do that before you start Sonic 3, whenever you get around to it.

I had to buy one of those new 'slim' 360s and, unless I'm going crazy, it doesn't come with HD component cables (fuck off Microsoft). My question is: can I use the old HD component cables from my old broken launch 360? Will those old cables screw up the new 360 somehow? I don't want to break this new one.

You can use your old cables. Microsoft have used the same connector on new boxes.

1) Where does the whole 'GAF is elitist' thing come from? If anything GAF is notable for having a diverse pool of opinions. I've never once detected any condescension toward mainstream games; the Halo, Uncharted, CoD and Mario threads are usually the most active.

2) Rockstar should have done an Undead Nightmare DLC for GTA 4. That would have been awesome?

Had to make #2 a question

Xbox Live Dashboard question:

I remember being able to send a pre-written message to my friends about certain goals I attained in XBLA games as a way to stoke the competitive fires. Things like, "I got X achievement in Trials HD!" or "I scored X points in Pac Man CE!"

Does this feature still exist? I can't find it anymore.

It's probably not wise to judge a forum that is frequented by thousands of people into a small little category.

If you talk to enough people here or read enough posts, you'll find there are a high majority of individuals that enjoy many, many types of games and enjoy them for many different reasons.

Try moving his body by using the [] button to pick him up when you are over him. Try grabbing him from either his legs or his head to get a different position on him.

And you can just shoot his radio which he is conscious or you can just hold him up. To hold him up, sneak up behind him, aim the gun at him and press L1. You have to be pretty close to him but if you are, you will hold him up and do some really funny stuff to him.

No. You have to wake him up and aim your gun from behind to perform a hold-up. Shoot his radio and then tranq him. The only way to destroy it while they're unconscious is if they fall on their stomach. I usually find performing the hold-up to be far more effective.
