This thread is for stupid GAMING questions that don't deserve their own thread

Does it affect PC game performance if you have a Firefox session open at the same time? I have a Dell i7 quad-core 8MB RAM.

If so, is it that big an issue if you're playing an older game? I've gotten back into Rome: Total War lately, and sometime when I have questions I'd like to be able to alt-tab to Firefox and look for an answer without exiting the game.

Firefox has a memory footprint (currently mine is 160MB), but you should never be even close to hitting anything performance affecting.

Can gameboy games be played on a Gameboy color? I just bought one for $10 and went to my local shop to find mostly Gameboy games. Want to give this system some playtime.

Yes, and you can even play them with a limited color palette.

Umm...I had the weirdest fucking thing happen to my PS3 the other day and I'm worried it's been hacked or something. I was using the browser to watch a video of some game footage when it just froze. I couldn't quit to the XMB, so I did a hard reset. Then this blue screen came up with like words written in french and a weird sd graphic telling me to plug my controller into the usb and to download a system update. I thought, hmm, this is weird, so I shut down the system. Now where the PSN login graphic icon is this thing that says sign up for PSN when you click on it. Has my PS3 been compromised? WTF is going on.

I ordered a used Guncon 2 a few weeks ago from Amazon. I had to buy a y-splitter to hook it up (it didn't come with any other cords)... and it just won't work. The PS2 senses the Guncon and I can fire it, but when I try to calibrate it, no matter how still I hold it, the reticule jumps all over the screen left and right, mostly along the x-axis. It's unusable.

What's going on here? Is it because I don't have the official y-splitter (I have no idea where the hell I would find one of those)? I can't figure this out, and I need to know if the unit itself is the problem so I can send it back soon.

Seriously, nobody can help me here? I don't want to return a working unit if the y-splitter is the problem. Googling hasn't been much help, either.

I'm looking to buy an affordable gaming headset and ran into this one in Amazon.

If any of you guys have them, I'd appreciate your feedback or if you have any other suggestions they're also very welcomed. It's mostly going to be used for PS3 gaming.

I've heard people mention that the Gamecube video output (generally at 480p) is better than the Wii's. Is there a page that explains this and shows comparisons?

If you want to explain this to me yourself I can take an extremely technical explanation if necessary.

I can't see the iPlayer app on PS3, do I need to download it from the store? I can't see it there either.

EDIT: Never mind, you have to remove accounts from other regions for it, fuck that.

Do it!

And to think I haven't got this game yet. :(

Well you are not missing much here really,Dead Space 2 is way inferior compared to the amazing Dead Space 1, Without the original creator the guys at Visceral lost the great feel and all the horror elements of DS1 and made it just "that another actiony shooter in space".

If I hook my PAL PS2 with component cables to my Bravia HDTV will I get full colour on NTSC games or will they still be black and white?

Sorta game related. dx10 and dx11 graphic cards have unified shaders as most of us know. But how do they divide up the shaders for pixel and vertex shading in dx9 only games? Is it preset or does the video card or drivers adjust it dynamically depending on the demand? Also are there any interesting features in current dx11 cards that are not accessible using the current dx11 api (I know in past videocards, there were always features that were not used like tessellation on ati's dx10 cards).

I get full color, but my PAL PS2 is modded to support NTSC games.

Generally, US deals get dedicated threads.

I logged onto steam yesterday and decided to play a game I haven't played much of at all since buying the Orange Box 4 years ago, Team Fortress 2. Strangely enough, it showed on my steam profile that 94% of the games personal achievements were unlocked. This was pretty peculiar as I haven't ever played much of the game, but did want to start getting into it now.

As it turns out, a friend of mine came over back in June and played on my account after I went to bed. He claims he may have by mistake, joined a modded server that unlocked all the achievements. He claims that he is willing to reimburse me for all the games if something should happen to my account. i.e (It getting banned)

My questions...

Should I be worried about my steam account getting banned and losing access to all my games? Can i rectify this somehow?

And second, is there a way to reset all of my steam achievements and unlocks? I wanted to start getting into Team fortress 2 and it is really annoying knowing that all the weapons and achievements are basically unlocked already. (I think?) It's really frustrating.

I am not entirely sure, but you can clear all of your stats. Apparently you can reset achievements as well, like so: http://www.teamfortress2fort.com/forums/t/Howtoresetachievements-11314.aspx

Is there any educated guesses about the standard resolution of the next gen consoles?

I want to buy a new tv for my current PS3 and 360, but I also want to be future proof for the next gen as well. Are the PS4 and Xbox 3 going to start pushing 2k resolution or whatever? Or is 1080p going to pretty much be the standard?

I don't care about 3-d.

Oh wow, just bought this one. So far it's good. I downgraded to this from the Logitech G35 7.1 Surround Sound Gaming headset. The sound of course, is not as good but very substantial and gets the job done. While Turtle Beach touts the P11 as a headset you can play your PS3 games with without disturbing anybody, the speakers are still pretty loud even at a moderate volume. They're easy to setup and for that price, it's a decent grab as it doubles as a headset for the PC/Mac. They're also very comfortable. I wouldn't go as far as saying as you won't notice that they're on (since the volume box sort of acts as a weight and tugs the headset down a bit) but they're certainly very light and comfortable on the ears.

1080p is most likely going to be the standard. Barring any crazy tech breakthroughs.

Are you maybe using it with an HDTV (LCD/Plasma)? Because most of those lightguns will only work with CRT tube televsions.

EDIT: GunCon 2 is only compatible with CRT televisions, GunCon 3 is compatible with LCD/Plasma.

So here's the deal GAF. I bought Skies of Arcadia for Dreamcast. The disc was kind of scratched up, but no worse then anything else I have for the Dreamcast. I got it cleaned, still didn't run, but everything else did. Cleaned the laser and the pins of the Dreamcast, still had some problems. Flip the Dreamcast over and now the game works.

So whats the deal here? Should I just go out and buy another Dreamcast or is their some sort of other repair I can do myself?

Anyone here listen to any good current PC games podcast they can recommend?
I quite like the KBMOD podcast, there's lots of over reactions and misinformation, but they seems like a cool bunch.

I came across Retro Gamer magazine recently while out of time at a chain of bookstores we don't have near my house. I bought volume five of Retro Gamer Collection and the Sonic issue of Retro Gamer.

THEY ARE FUCKING AWESOME

It's a UK-based magazine, and considering I don't have easy access to that bookstore, where can I safely and reliably buy new and old issues of Retro Gamer online?

I'd love to have the first four volumes of the Collection magazine.

Everything I'm seeing of Bioshock Infinite looks great. Should I play the first two games before or are they not required?

I don't think they are planning on having the story from the first games tie in much to Infinite, but Bioshock1 is worth playing regardless. Gets a few things wrong but is absolutely one of the gems of this generation.

Gotcha. Now just to decide if I want to play it on my 360 or Mac.
