This thread is for stupid GAMING questions that don't deserve their own thread

When I start up Civ 5 in Steam it always asks if I want to use directX 9 or directX 10/11, with directX 10/11 as the "recommended option'. My question is, would selecting directX 9 be a better choice if I don't care about pretty graphics and just want better performance, and is there a way to have the game automatically select one so I don't have to do it manually everytime. I'm a big 'ole Steam n00b.
Kinda depends on the game and your hardware, as there are some titles that actually perform a bit better in DX10. I'd recommend trying both and sticking with whichever seems smoother.

Is there any way for a PS3 to connect to an iPod? I was at a buddy's place and we couldn't get the console to recognize it through USB under the music bar in the XMB.

It can connect to an iPod and use it as a storage device, but you can't actually use it to access your iPod's music.

At least I don't think you can.

Is it worth playing Persona 4 after I finish the giantbomb endurance run, or will I have pretty much seen all there is to see?
I don't know how they played the game. Specifically whether they did all the social links or not, which I assume they didn't. Depending on how many and which they did, you could try to go for the ones they missed, just to mix it up.
That said, Persona 4 is a long fucking game. Whether or not you can stand seeing the vast majority of it again depends on how well you remember the endurance run. The combat will also inevitably get stale, as it's not deep enough to stay interesting for 40, much less 80+ hours. Again, the game is huge. It's your decision (and time), but I don't think you'd get much out of it. There's just not enough wiggle room outside of the social links and they're not that interesting, relative to how much time you have to spend on seeing them.

Was it 3 or 2 which Jeff criticised as it has no VA and the dungeons aren't as good? Haven't played a JRPG since I played FFX 4 or so years ago, got a craving for some reason

Do not even think about playing the first or second Persona game if you watched the Endurance Run and want to play that series. I'm pretty sure those games are impossible to go back to and play for the first time without nostalgia helping out.

Persona 3 however works pretty much like 4 does. Persona 4 fixed EVERYTHING bad I would have to say about Persona 3, so the experience was a little clunky, but at least it was new and not just the Endurance Run again.

I didn't know whether or not to ask this on the OT or here.

I just got netflix on my PS3. There are a lot of things I want to stream. Problem is, I have a bandwidth cap, and I don't know how to set it to SD streaming instead of HD.

How do I change this?

Log on to Netflix on a computer and there should be a setting under your Account to limit how much bandwidth it takes up.

In the Ocarina of Time disc that came with Wind Waker, is the aiming (with the slingshot) supposed to be like this: To aim up I have to aim down and to aim down I have to aim up with the stick? I don't remember how it worked in the original game but this does seem kinda off, is it an emulation issue?

Here's a stupid question:

How do I save my game in Zelda 1 and 2 for the NES, outside of having to kill myself and select the "save" option on the Game Over menu?

With the new Xbox update, I can't seem to figure out how to "install to hard drive" like before. Now all Y does is search. I've been searching and searching, but can't pull up anything on this (most results come up with 2008-era xbox piracy results).

Did they take the feature out, or maybe it's just my disc?

When you are on the dashboard with the disc in the tray, press X for more info. On the overview page that comes up, the option to install should be among the green boxes to the left of the main picture. This is also where the delete option will appear when a game is installed.

Does anyone have any spare 1 month free Playstation Plus codes that Sony gave out back in December? I only really want PSN Plus for 1 month and can't justify paying 3 months for it.

I'm wondering if they'd work with European PSN as that's already tied to my card but if they don't I'll just use my main Canadian account.

So GAF, I recently learned about RGH for Xbox360, a hardware/software modification that will allow Xbox360 to have various functions such as Homebrew, ability to play without DVD, ability to play from external hard-disk of any size/kind, etc etc.

Question is: is it legal to modify one's Xbox like that? Of course, this will render the modified Xbox incompatible with Live, but figuring as I never use it anyway, I am interested about this.

How is this, considered from legal/illegal perspective?

Gaf, how come Japanese Nintendo console boxes only have cardboard at the top? Both my Japanese N64 and my Super Famicom have a polystyrene inner but the actual box only covers 5 sides, the other is left as bare polystyrene. The cardboard fits like a lid over the top.

I always wondered, are they sold like this in store or are mine missing something?

Anyone wiser?

I'm playing Shadow of the Colossus, and after lots of cursing and crying I finally managed to defeat that fucking second colossus. Now I'm looking for the third one, and the sword light thing seems to indicate I should go through the ravine, but I couldn't find anything there. What do?

Have you found the lake yet? IIRC you have to go down just the right path. You know you have found it as you will come out into a new area [with a lake] and a short cinematic will show.

This is your first playthrough I take it? I found finding them a right pain on my first playthrough too.

Hope this helps without giving too much away! :)

Are there any sites that sell PAL NES games in bundles? Just some basics, I am thinking about building some backbone to my NES collection. Ebay has some bundles but either they are NTSC or full of crappy sports games.

I was indeed by the lake, I just didn't think about trying to reach that huge structure in the middle of the lake ._.

I have played it before, a few years ago, but this is the first time I'm trying to play through the game. So far I like the concept and the music (and the story, as I read the plot synopsis on Wikipedia a long time ago), but it suffers from janky controls and gameplay, like Ico did. I feel like Team Ico are better at constructing interesting concepts, stories and settings than constructing the gameplay :|

Ah well that's good then :).

Well they seem to have a very particular design ethos with eccentricities that one just has to live with [or not]. I adore both Ico and SOTC but I can understand how they wouldn't necessarily be someone else's cup of tea.

Hope you enjoy the rest of the game :). Feel free to PM me if you want some spoiler free prods in the right direction if you get lost/stuck again.

Is there a problem with Xbox LIVE atm? When I'm trying to sign in my account, it says that there is a problem and that I should do the connection test. So I did that and now it says that there is a service alert for service.

Does this mean more people can't seem to connect?

Just curious, what didn't you like about this? And is it true that if you enter a dungeon, you have to sit down and finish it before you can turn off your ds/3ds?

I couldn't stand the art style and the ugly graphics. The battle system is very simplistic and pretty much any other RPG is more exciting. I don't remember if there is quick save feature, but the battery in the DS Lite is good enough that closing the lid and putting it in sleep mode will do just fine.

So I just finished Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom...I take it there isn't any mumbles of a sequel since Game Republic closed up last spring? Such a bummer the game ended.

Is there any site where I can buy European Microsoft Points for reasonably cheap and have them mail the code to me instantly like some of these US-only deals I'm seeing? Apparently points are region locked, and apparently amazon.co.uk wants to ship me most of its deals.

I want to finally get a Wii, but I want to get an earlier model for backwards compatibility (right?). For some reason Amazon isn't selling any Wiis at the moment, even the newest bundles. Anyone know where I can get one for less than $150? I always see some on eBay but for some reason they almost always go for more than $150, even used ones. Why would I want to pay that when I can get a brand new model with Mario Kart or Super Mario Brothers for $150? I wanna get my Wii on
Same thing happened to me recently. I wanted to play my Gamecube games on my HDTV but since no new TV's have S Video inputs I had to get a BC Wii.

I checked every site I could (I'm in Canada) and every store in my city. My search yielded nothing online but I managed to get a Black Mario Kart Wii bundle in the last store I checked in the city.

Have you checked Sears or Dell?

I think the OP in the Cheap Arse Gamer thread has such details. If not just ask in the thread and someone will point you in the right direction.

As long as you don't play pirated games it should be all legal, since you're modifying your own console so it can run non-commercial (and thus not-for-profit) software.

So I know that I can connect my 360 to my monitor as long as the monitor has an HDMI plug in, but as far as sound goes do I need anything special or can I just plug a headset into the 360 and go?

Is there an Official Playstation 3 or PlayStation Network thread? I have a question about installation and downloads. Figured I'd ask about them before going ahead and just posting them in here.....or is this the best place? It's kind of a weird/long-winded question...

maybe not the best place to ask, but ah well:

my brother bought a modded 360 from someone he knows. i don't really know much about it other than the fact that it can play burnt games. i want to make sure he doesn't get himself banned, though. can you play normal games on it without getting banned online?

Are there any easter eggs in the original Call Of Duty? Playing through the campaign and then onto the United Offensive expansion.

I'm not sure how the 360 is modded, but it should be possible to revert it to a official firmware, right? That's what I'd do :)

If I send a PS3 to Sony for maintenance (and keep the HDD with the saves while sending them a blank HDD in its place)...

When they send it back, could I put the old HDD in and have the PS3 recognize it without having to format it (erasing everything)?

i'll see if i can actually talk him into doing that, haha. he's a silly teen. i always have to warn him not to fuck around with modded games in call of duty and stuff like that.

Okay, here we go! My PS3 questions:

So I started downloading all the bonus content that came with my Uncharted 2 GOTY edition, right? Well, I had to stop downloading in the middle of it one day, so I never finished downloading all the extras. Now, you know how you can view your download history on the PSN Store? I went there, and they ALL say download (even for games and past items I know I already have installed). Is there a way to figure out which ones I never downloaded? Because it seems as if the store has no idea what's installed onto your system. I don't want to waste my time downloading something I already downloaded OR take up double memory by downloading it twice... I just wish it would TELL me I already have it installed instead of just....installing it again. Much to my chagrin after I took the chance and thought "well if I already have it installed it'll just delete the old installation!", I discovered that it WILL download and install things twice! I now have duplicate avatars and who knows what else. Will it install map packs twice, too? How can I delete all these duplicates? I don't like this at all :(

Also, why does Game Data Utility show two different things for Uncharted 2 but only one for all my other games? And is Game Data Utility the place where Add-Ons and Mandatory Disc Installations are saved? Is this where I can find out what I've downloaded as Add-On content for each game? And is a multiplayer DLC pack considered Add-On? Edit: I think I figured this out, for the most part. Basically, I'm just trying to find out where I can view my Add-On content I've purchased or downloaded, or is that only accessible by playing the actual game?

Also, what's the difference between a PSP downloadable game and a mini? Is the only difference between the two the fact that a mini can be played on both the PS3 and PSP, while a PSP downloadable can only be played on a PSP (but can be downloaded via PS3...what's that about?). Just wondering because I got a Pinball game that I can't play because I don't have a PSP.

Edit2: Okay, so I thought I downloaded the DLC map packs for Uncharted 2, but when I went into multiplayer (for the first time) it said "we've noticed you don't have any DLC map packs, would you like to go to the PSN Store?" What's up with that????
