This thread is for stupid GAMING questions that don't deserve their own thread

So I know that I can connect my 360 to my monitor as long as the monitor has an HDMI plug in, but as far as sound goes do I need anything special or can I just plug a headset into the 360 and go?

If you know some way I do not to get sound out of your official Xbox 360 headset then go ahead and do that. I had to personally grind a nub off the analogue connector, plug that in at the same time as HDMI (you're not supposed to), put tape over the leftmost pin in the part of the analogue cable that goes into the 360 and then split the RCA analogue sound out into my sound system, converting it to 3.5 mm headphones in the process. It was a pain in the ass. There's an adapter for analogue sound and HDMI video out if you want to pay money for it though.

EDIT: Unless, of course, your monitor has a headphone jack and it transmits audio through HDMI. Then that would obviously work.

Pyrokai : I've been confused by this as well. As far as I've seen for my dlc, I had to check ingame wether I had the warhawk dlc or not. It's not easy to manage.

Minis can be played on psp and ps3. Psp games can be played on psp and soon vita

Okay, here we go! My PS3 questions:

So I started downloading all the bonus content that came with my Uncharted 2 GOTY edition, right? Well, I had to stop downloading in the middle of it one day, so I never finished downloading all the extras. Now, you know how you can view your download history on the PSN Store? I went there, and they ALL say download (even for games and past items I know I already have installed). Is there a way to figure out which ones I never downloaded? Because it seems as if the store has no idea what's installed onto your system. I don't want to waste my time downloading something I already downloaded OR take up double memory by downloading it twice... I just wish it would TELL me I already have it installed instead of just....installing it again. Much to my chagrin after I took the chance and thought "well if I already have it installed it'll just delete the old installation!", I discovered that it WILL download and install things twice! I now have duplicate avatars and who knows what else. Will it install map packs twice, too? How can I delete all these duplicates? I don't like this at all :(

Also, why does Game Data Utility show two different things for Uncharted 2 but only one for all my other games? And is Game Data Utility the place where Add-Ons and Mandatory Disc Installations are saved? Is this where I can find out what I've downloaded as Add-On content for each game? And is a multiplayer DLC pack considered Add-On? Edit: I think I figured this out, for the most part. Basically, I'm just trying to find out where I can view my Add-On content I've purchased or downloaded, or is that only accessible by playing the actual game?

Also, what's the difference between a PSP downloadable game and a mini? Is the only difference between the two the fact that a mini can be played on both the PS3 and PSP, while a PSP downloadable can only be played on a PSP (but can be downloaded via PS3...what's that about?). Just wondering because I got a Pinball game that I can't play because I don't have a PSP.

Edit2: Okay, so I thought I downloaded the DLC map packs for Uncharted 2, but when I went into multiplayer (for the first time) it said "we've noticed you don't have any DLC map packs, would you like to go to the PSN Store?" What's up with that????

Huh, as far as I am aware re-downloading and installing the same thing twice doesn't take up extra memory. Also, are you sure you are installing the DLC's after downloading? It doesn't install automatically.

I was in the mood for a little turn-based action this past week and tried to fire up Lords of the Realm 2 on DosBox but had a hell of a time getting the sound to work properly, which lagged the game pretty bad. Does anyone have experience with this game on DosBox? Thanks!

When the fuck will SCEE/Capcom take it's stick out of it's ass and release God Hand on the Euro store. It was also has a PAL version so what gives?

My money is waiting.

Is that box art for Borderlands 2 legit? It's ugly and a downgrade from the previous title.
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0050SX9VO/?tag=neogaf0e-20
Most likely since it's the same that has been sent out to European retailers. I personally think it's great and it will do a good job of standing out from all the other box arts.

Is there a flash player for the 3DS? Or if not is there any indication if and when one would be on the way? My nephew wants to watch youtube vids on his 3ds.

Is Metroid Prime Trilogy really that rare? Looking to sell my copy and wondering what I could get for it.

PAL or NTSC?

I heard about it having a short print run but it doesn't seem to have affected eBay prices too much. I mean, there's the odd one that is up for an obscene amount but whether they regularly sell or not at that price is questionable.

I'm keeping my PAL one sealed just in case anyway :P

Got an online question.

So, my internet connection kept going out randomly for a while. This lead to my Xbox connecting at random times and not seemingly being able to find the connection other times (I'm using a wired setup through a router).

So I unplugged everything and replugged it all back up. I still get a slower connection but at least it doesn't randomly disconnect me. However, upon playing Halo Reach I was informed I had a moderate NAT which, to my knowledge, has never happened before. ON the other side when I play Gears it says I have an open NAT and my PS3 has a type 2 connection using the same setup.

If you skipped the top, and I dont blame you as this is more of an exasperated rant against Comcast, here are my questions.

1) Why does Halo Reach tell me my NAT is moderate while Gears and my PS3 say otherwise?
2) Do you guys have any good suggestions for new routers? I hate going wireless so I usually try to keep my systems wired.

So I want to buy xbox live 12 months from amazon, but live in Australia. Before I do do US xbox live codes work in another region? I know the points don't and I did use a Canadian xbox live code at launch but am unsure whether or not things have ChangEd. Thanks

If I wanted a good game to introduce me to the Yakuza series, is it wise to go back to Yakuza 1 to get the full story, or to jump-in with the newest Yakuza 4 to get the benefit of refined game-play elements? Also, how is the Yakuza zombie game, worth picking up?

I suggest you begin with the first Yakuza since they're all well worth playing and it might be difficult to play them in a non-chronological order. I haven't played Dead Souls yet, but the impressions I've read from Japanese players suggest that it's mediocre. If you absolutely don't want to play all four games, then Yakuza 4 is a good place to start.

So im looking to purchase a PS3 and have been browsing different deals. I came across a deal on play.co.uk and they are selling 40gb PS3s for £50. Is this totally normal, or is this a really good deal?

They are also brand new as well.

Ive been searching around and £50 sounds like a crazy good deal.

I think you're mistaken, this is the £50 one I can see:
Currently not working because of YLOD fault , but can be repaired quite easily for those who know what they are doing , or most computer shops will fix them. Otherwise this is a great condition 40 gig PS, the ps3 actually has a new 160 gig HDD in it and comes with Offical duel shock 3 controller, hdmi lead and original box. Once again it is not working at the moment hence low price but just google YLOD and it can be fixed. PLSE NOTE I will not accept any returns for YLOD as I have claimed fault before buying. But someone who can fix them will get a bargain ! The controller is worth £40 alone and the 160 HDD . I will send via courier please email me any questions

edit: wait you're right.

ok heres another question:

When was the last time the ps3 had a price cut? Was it quite a while ago and another cut should be soon perhaps?

I suppose the cheapest option for PS3s these days are the slims?

I have a slim 360, 150ish gb of free hdd space. My UMvC3 disc causes the system to run fairly loud, despite not having many scratches. No other game does this. Decided to try and install it.

Doesn't work. Sits on the progress bar with the circle loading thing indefinitely. What gives?

I can't figure if this is normal or not. So, in some 3DS games (3D and 2D) it feels like the colors suddenly change. For example in Mutants Mudds when Max jumps the sky goes from a light blue to a dark blue. Is this normal?

Is it true that if you run your 3DS battery completely dry it won't turn on unless you remove and put back in the battery...even after you charge it?

maybe some scratch is not letting the game install correctly, rent a copy and install it, then the xbox will just need the digital signature instead of reading the whole disc.

My copy of Mass Effect 2 is giving me a weird echo effect for all the voices or they sound like they are talking to me in an empty metal room, any suggestions how to change that to how it should sound? It didn't do so last year with the same system and tele nor any other game does it.

No. I've run mine dry a couple of times, and - while it needs to be charged for a bit before it'll talk to me again - hitting the power button switches it on, just as you'd expect.

Tom F'n Cruise wants to know if the PS3 can catch viruses or whatever from surfing the internet on the PS3 browser.

In theory, yes. In practice, absolutely not.

To elaborate: *IF* someone wrote a virus that ran on PS3, and *if* there was a flaw in the web browser that made it execute rogue data, and *if* there was a further flaw which allowed the executable data access to anything on the hard disk other than the web browser content and *if* the virus had a payload that could alter the behaviour of the XMB and *if* they could do all this without tripping any of the security routines...

...then yes, a virus could work, in principle. But all those protections would have to fail... and someone would have to actually write the damn thing in the first place. Not gonna happen.

I have US xbox live account account, i'm from Chile. I want to buy some Microsoft points digitally but Amazon won't let me since i'm not American. My question is where's the best place to buy Microsoft points online that won't trouble for not being american?

cool thx. G-fex didnt ask everything i told him. i was wondering that because when i was on the internet the screen turned blue with letters and numbers then shut off on its own. then when i turned the PS3 back on it made me set everything up again like it was brand new.... i thought i lost all my data but when i was done it said it found previous data/users and then fixed everything. Anybody know what caused it???

Hi GAF, I'm trying to remember a game, it's not out yet, it's coming to PSN, it takes place in this all white environment and you fire black ink at stuff, any ideas?

Oh man, I remember that. It actually had polygonal environments that you revealed by firing the ink, correct?

I don't remember seeing anything from that in years. I'll see if I can't track it down.

Isn't there a fairly recent Anno 2070 discussion thread on this board?

I know it's not an extremely popular game, but I thought I saw a post-release thread that started in November and was still active in January. I have a question I want to post, but the only 'Anno 2070' threads the search is finding go back to before the game's release and they've been dead for months.

I should have edited that but I forgot, I found out what it was. The Unfinished Swan.

Man, I could not figure out what that was. I'm glad you managed to find it because I tried google searching stuff I thought might bring it up to no avail, and I ended up reading the list of PSN games on wikipedia to even see if that rang a bell.

I've been wracking my brain for years trying to remember a pinball game my brother and I used to play in the 80's in the Green Mountain Mall in St. Johnsbury, Vermont.

All I can recall is that you played a typical 80's hair metal guy trying tO rescue your girlfriend, who had been kidnapped by the devil. The table was Hell themed, and I remember there was some voice work if you did particularly well or awful.

Any clues, Gaf?

I don't use my Wii all that often, but it gets plenty of playtime when my nephews come to visit. However, last time they were here they didn't seem to be as interested in playing games inexplicably. I finally got around to turning the thing on and found it's making some really odd buzzing noise generated by the drive. From some research I've found that it's most likely a piece of metal that's too close to one of the components that will be spinning when it is in operation, so it's like a baseball card near the spokes of a bicycle wheel. I already watched some videos on repair techniques, and ordered a tri wing screwdriver.

My question is, has anyone here ever actually performed such an operation themselves? It seems fairly straightforward (slightly bending a piece of metal that itself is always immobile during drive operation), but I don't want to screw it up. There was some caption during one of the videos that mentioned just inserting a piece of paper between the metal piece and the drive instead of bending it, but it did not elaborate.

I presume your Wii is well out of warranty and you don't fancy paying Nintendo to repair it? If so, have you considered going the homebrew route? If you loaded your games from a USB connected external hard drive then you wouldn't need to use the disc drive and thus you wouldn't get this sound. Yes?

Is it possible for a 3D game to feature vector based textures? If no, why? If yes, why haven't I seen any? It would make a game like Wind Waker truly timeless.

I guess they would require ridiculous amounts of CPU power and wouldn't scale to lesser configurations at all? Unless you would be reducing geometry which could be fun to see.

is there any way to connect a sega saturn to a CRT monitor via VGA? I've read that the Saturn was supposed to support VGA output, however, nothing was ever officially released. I'm looking for a plug in and play option - nothing something I'd have to mod.

I'm hoping something like the XCM 1080p Mega-Cool VGA Box or this linkstyle ypbpr component to vga video audio converter would work?

I'm looking to play battle garegga on my CRT to reduce any input lag that I'm going to receive on my HDTV.

thanks!

The way a pixel shader works is it uses the texture as a lookup table; for each pixel, it looks up the pixel (or pixels, in the case of various filtering algorithms) from the texture that should be rendered on that spot.

If the texture was a vector texture, it'd have to iterate over all the vector objects each time it's looking up a pixel to form a conclusion about exactly what the pixel at that spot ought to be; significantly slower than a simple direct lookup, although optimisations would theoretically be possible (A BSP tree for the texture, perhaps?)

So in short: Theoretically possible, but significantly slower.

Since none of the drives on my PC can read the discs to rip them, I'd still need to use the drive in the Wii to rip the games to a drive.
