This thread is for stupid GAMING questions that don't deserve their own thread

Since none of the drives on my PC can read the discs to rip them, I'd still need to use the drive in the Wii to rip the games to a drive.

Do'h! Sorry DarthWoo, it was late when I posted that. Um, could you borrow a working Wii to rip them? From what I know of Wii Homebrew I don't think it matters which drive you ripped them from.

Actually, depending on the exact nature of the problem, that may be fine. My original Xbox disc drive is mostly dead; it won't run games. But the problem, specifically, is *seeking*. It takes an inordinate amount of time to seek to a new part of the disc and that causes slowdown and crashes.

However, that means it *does* run well enough to dump the disc contents to the hard disk; that doesn't require constant seeking, just a continual copy of the disc to the HD. I've continued to play those games that aren't backwards-comapatible on the 360 using my original Xbox that way. Heck, I was playing GTA:SA when my first HD television arrived!

I can't create a new thread, but is there anyone we can trust in today's games industry if we are a) concerned about privacy and don't want to be tracked/advertised-to etc, or b) don't want to sign up to all manner of DRM, Always-On Internet connections and Publisher accounts such as EA/Origin IDs, WarnerBros IDs etc.

Sony had the big privacy breach for starters, a problem they had known about for years from top security experts and simply not bothered to patch. Then they went to high courts to attempt to force ISPs to hand over people's personal information using IP addresses, so that they could then take those people to court.

Ubisoft on PC demand I have an always-on internet connection in order to play my games, which this simply isn't always the case. If their UPLAY system goes down, it locks out all gameplay, as was seen late last year.

Microsoft just want to get EVERYONE onto XBL Gold, playing online. Games have local co-op retroactively patched-out. Gamers cannot play games via system link together if they happen to have different versions of game patches or Xbox360 dashboard, they have to be the same 'version', and that means the 'latest' version, because if you don't accept the game patches you are locked-out of online all together and can't even sign-in.

I'm looking around in anticipation for the next-generation of gaming, and I'm not really likeing what I see.

Well it seems to be the way the online world is going sadly. I share your concerns and think that the best one can do is deal with each company on a case by case basis. However, so far I have been content with how Nintendo has dealt with this matter with regard to the online aspect of the 3DS. At each stage where any data or private info may be shared they have always offered the choice to opt in or opt out, to the best of my recollection. Now you may have concerns that I do not share but I have been happy with their approach so far, at least.

What's the best, open world, space game. I want leveling/upgrading ships, getting new ships, i'd like being able to see the interior of the ship, but that's not necessary. I basically want to get my Trek on without it being an actual Trek game.

If I play the Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning Demon on PS3, and sign into Origin, can I get the bonuses to work for Mass Effect 3 on Xbox 360 once it comes out?

Not sure what you mean by open world. If it's just open ended, go where you want, then I recommend the following two.

X3: Terran Conflict lacks the interior of the ship, but for various sectors to vist, trading, building, fleet construction, open ended results and story it's one of the best.

Freelancer can be a bit repetitive, but single player and multiplayer (I recommend due to the good fanbase and role playing if you find the right server) offers a lot to "get your Trek on" at a basic level if nothing else.

Not open ended, go where you want all the time, but FreeSpace 2 series is just good stuff. Especially once you look into the mod community that has practically released a brand new game several times over on their own.
There may be some out there that lets you do what you are looking for.

even though it probably isn't as openworld as you're looking for, black prophecy is a pretty awesome free space action MMO.

It's a bit closed off as you have to choose missions and stuff to advance (at least that's how it was when I played it in the beta), but it was quite a bit of fun. might be worth checking out. It was in development for like 7 years or something..at least that's how long it felt from the initial announcement. The only thing is that you're stuck with your ship but you can upgrade it however you want with custom parts to set it apart from other ships.

I'm thinking about getting a PS3 slim as I keep having to delete stuff on my 80gb one. Is there any chance of another redesign being announced this year or is it safe to buy one now? Any advice would be much appreciated!

Is there a big OT to discuss the weekly 360 deals? I'd love to go there weekly and discuss what's worth getting and what's not worth getting.

This week there's Lara Croft: GoL on sale and I'd like to know which comparables there are or what the game is like (I'm trying the demo as we speak though).

I can't think of any console that has ever been redesigned twice. You should be safe buying a slim now, as the only differences with new revisions will probably be minor that won't affect you in any way (moving around the inside components, more efficient power usage etc.).

Alternatively, you could look into replacing your 80gig hard drive with an off-the-shelf larger hard drive. It's actually approved by Sony, and fairly painless with a quick Google search.

Are there any games where you control a character that is aware that they are being controlled by you and you are actually another character in the game's universe?

First: Contact?

Second: (End-game spoilers for a well-known SNES RPG that wasn't released in Europe)
Earthbound, maybe? The characters aren't really aware of the player's presence, but the player's existence is implied in the final fight

Third: I can't really say *anything* about the next one without spoiling it, so I'll do two layers of spoilers. The first will describe the game in vague terms, the second one will spoil the name, the third will say why.

A story-focussed DS game that's extremely text-heavy

9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors

In 999, you *think* you're controlling the top screen while there's narration going on on the bottom screen. A final revelation, though, reveals that the narrator is actually another character in the story when they start talking directly about themselves - at which point you realise that you've *always* been looking at two stories in parallel

Fourth, one I can actually talk about *without* spoilers: Jon Ingold's Fail-Safe:
http://wurb.com/if/game/1328

It's a text adventure; the player is a radio operator in communication with the central character of the game. Standard text adventure commands become instructions you are feeding through to the central character elsewhere, who will then act based on that.

Fifth, since it just sprung to mind: Rameses.
http://wurb.com/if/game/922

It's a highly experimental work - heavy on storytelling, light on challenge. You effectively play a character's... conscience? I guess that's the best way of putting it.

Thanks a lot for answering!

Is there a catch-all topic for emulation? I would love to chat about MAME, DOSBox, PSX/N64 emulation, emu setups etc, but I can only find threads on specific software like Dolphin.

No, there is not and mega threads are usually frowned upon. You're one post from becoming a member, then you can post threads on your own. Try to make it more specific though.

Fallout 3 and New Vegas are very similar gameplay wise, but almost everyone prefers the writing in New Vegas. I personally didn't make it much past the character creator before I was distracted by something else.

Well, I was thinking about starting with the first one, but I want to try out the best Fallout game before I'm fully committed to the series.

"Best" depends on what you want out of it, though. All five Fallout titles offer *something* different from one another.

Hmm, I see, well okay then I'm looking for one that is very friendly to newcomers, one that eases you into the game you know?

Then you'd definitely want either 3 or NV. I'd possibly go for 3, myself, but NV does have the advantages mentioned above.

Is there a way to go about picking up an older video card? I'd be open to buying someone's used one if need be. I just am sick of my PC not being able to play anything but Bejeweled 2. It's an older PC, so I'm sure it won't be up to specs on a newer card, and money is definitely a concern at the moment, so a new PC is out of the question.

Basically, I want to be able to play my games up to around 2004 level without much of a problem.

You could check the paper for any technology markets or swap meets in your area, people unload their old parts at those events.

Oooooh, good idea.

*goes to check*

Uh..., you'll have to forgive me, as I've been out of the loop on the PC market for about a decade. Which card or cards should I be looking for? The last thing I ever used was a
G-Force4MX420.

Is there a good reason why Sony hasn't allowed us to install full PS3 games to our HDD's yet?

(Like MS did with the 360.)

I'm having some trouble with a school subject. I need examples of games that have the minotaurus myth in them. So far I have god of war, wow and heroes of might and magic (maybe some hercules game too). Any other games out there? :) thanks

Well, installing Gran Turismo 5 took almost 50 minutes for me and that was about a 10gb game. I couldn't imagine how long it would take to for the larger games. That's probably way.

I wish I had the option to not install games when I don't want to on PS3 personally. Sometimes I just want a quick play through session or to make sure a used game works okay.

My favourite Bungie game, Minotaur: The Labyrinths of Crete for the actual Bull of Minos.
Bull men in general have several Castlevanias, Golden Axe II, various Final Fantasy titles, and League Of Legends. The only ones I can think of off the top of my head.

Questions. Lately my Phat PS3 has been blowing a lot of hot air out of the back during heavy game play and I'm hearing a whirring sound from my disc drive when I put a disc in like it's rubbing against something. Lastly, I can no longer turn my PS3 off by hardswitch as it corrupts my HDD and it has to recalibrate.

1. Is my PS3 dying on me?

2. Since my HDD is a 500GB I put in it, can I transfer that to a Slim?

I got a couple, and 1 isn't dumb, its that I cant make new threads yet.

1. My 60gb ps3 from 2006 got the disk read error and can no longer read disks. Sony wants around 180 USD to fix it. How much is reasonable to fix it through a random vendor? im aware it will void warranty

2. Why doesnt square enix just friggen remake ff7! Millions cry for it, its a sure money maker!

3. Why doesnt someone just make a game like call of duty, better graphics, more/better/balanced guns and take out the nonsense like the on hit kill melee (dont bring a gun to a knife fight!) and have some catchy gimmick. Just market it as Call of Duty x10 and word of mouth will spread the game.

Does it strictly have to be *video* games? There's a puzzle/CYOA book named Maze which has some ties to the myth (if in a surreal fashion).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MAZE:_Solve_the_World's_Most_Challenging_Puzzle

It's predictable, but: Battle of Olympus.

Also, Cliff Johnson's Labyrinth of Crete (which I don't *think* is anything to do with the Bungie title):

No, it can be any kind of game. In fact, the base examination is doing a picture analysis of the LEGO board game "Minotaurus".

King's Quest VI
Thanks :)

Hopefully this is the right place to stick this question.

I just bought a 360S, and want to hook up HDMI for video and a separate set of RCA headphones for audio. I have the HDMI cable plugged in the back, and I have component cables plugged in for the audio. I've done this set up before and have gotten it to work, however this time I can't find the setting in the XBOX menus to select separate audio.

Does anybody know how to do this?

WTF is wrong with amazon?

when are they ever going to sell DSI XL again?

Do you know why they are not currently selling it? Perhaps Nintendo are stealth removing it from retailers? I have been looking to pick one up at a bargain price recently, assuming they would be had for cheap as retailers would be wanting to clear their stock but I can only see prices far beyond what I want to pay :(.

Amazon won't even sell the 3DS....

I always get sound out through the analogue port no matter if HDMI is plugged in or not. Using the analogue out -> RCA adapter with the nub that covers the HDMI port ground off.
