This thread is for stupid GAMING questions that don't deserve their own thread

I played the Borderlands trial on PS3 and really enjoyed it. I can buy the full GotY edition for £24, the game alone for £9, and the DLC bundle costs £9 as well. Is the DLC worth it? Will it work with the game that's downloaded, or does it have to be disc? It says something about needing a certain disc code for the DLC to work

So basically its:

Everything definitely - £24
Basic game - £9
Everything perhaps - £18

edit: nevermind, ordered the GotY edition from Amazon for £15, saves me the harddrive space as well

Which of the Mario Party games for the gamecube is considered the best? I played to death from 1 to 3 on N64 but never played the GC ones.

Name this game: starts with the letter "D", open world and/or open-ended, allowing for lots of player choice ala Deus Ex. I think it's first-person too, and it's been getting a lot of press. Wracking my brain and all I can come up with is deception, but it's not that. Anyone?

Dragon's Dogma?

Edit: Dishonored would fit way better

I recently bought The Binding of Issac and really think a controller works best for it. I have a 360 controller that I am currently using and I am trying out a free version (30 trial day) of a game controller mapper called Pinnacle but before I buy it I was wondering if there were any better mappers out there, possibly free ones etc?

Where the fuck can I get this:

Are they the Takara Tomy "gashapon" toy mentioned here?

I just found out they're made by a Japanese toy company. They went for something insane like $40 USD. But they're probably not being made anymore and are likely to be incredibly hard to find now. Every store I've checked online is sold out.

Fuck.

you must search.

and then you must buy.

I bought 5 games: Mafia II, Bioshock 1&2, Rollercoaster Tycoon 3 and Metro 2033. (All on PC, combined 30€)
Time is short: Which should I play first (AKA which is the best for an evening of gaming?)

Mafia II if you're cool with epic Mafia stories with meh endings and driving in the wintertime at the beginning. Main story takes maybe 11 hours.
Bioshock 1 if you like fast action, bloom and a weird setting.
Metro if you're into depressing settings, lots of FMV QTEs, stunning lighting and being low on ammo.
Rollercoaster Tycoon 3 if you're into.. video games? (Because it's a video game)
Bioshock 2 should probably be pretty low on your list. All the other games are pretty cool though.

Is the final Episode of Alan Wake about the same length as the others, or is it a bit brief as finales tend to be?

Wondering if I've got a shot of getting through it before MS's conference, given I'm at the start of the penultimate one currently.

Edit: Referring to the original game, not The Signal or The Writer. Or, for that matter, American Nightmare.

I'm trying to remember the name of a first person adventure game for the pc. I think the first level is a beach. The other level in the game is a cave. I think it ran on the crytek or unreal engine because the graphics were pretty amazing. It came out either one or two years ago. I just remember the game because there was a big thread on it in gaming.

I think this was a config for joy2key from the Binding of Isaac OT (page 4).

OOPS nevermind the previous .cfg, i forgot to map a button for the second set of items (the ones you activate with Q). Fixed here and mapped it to Select in order to not activate them by mistake:

Whenever one of my kids signs into their profile on the 360 (they do not have Live accounts) they get an error message about not being able to connect to Live and are sent to the network troubleshooting screen. Is there someway I can prevent this from happening?

Is anyone else's copy of Battlefield 3 simply refusing to launch? I reinstalled it twice but when I launch it from Origin or Battlelog it doesn't begin. The "Launching" window flashes once and then nothing happens. Other games launch from origin just fine.

Browser: Chrome
OS: Windows 7 64 bit
i5 2500k
HD 6950

Are you overclocking your GPU at all? I have a similar setup and I ran into several issues with BF3 with even minor OC settings.

It would be strange if that's actually preventing it from launching, but thought I'd ask.

I've heard 'free' items from PSN Plus being described as 'you can use them as long as you're still a member, even if they're no longer free'. Can you redownload them as long as you're a member, too, or is that reliant on them still being on your HD?

yes, you can re-download them.

Are Singstar songs tied to the PS3 console or the hard drive?

I am about to upgrade my hard drive, I am worried because Singstar DLC only shows up when you boot the game then it connects to like a separate section of PSN store it seems, unlike all other downloads which all show up in the regular store download list. I googled it but seems to have different answers.

How likely is it that WiiU/PS4/X720 will run games at the quality of the Square and Epic tech demos? I'm just wondering if those were mostly meant for PC gaming tech or what.

I think it's very likely it will be in the same ballpark since there is a lot of money in the console market. They don't do tech demos for fun alone. They're meant to show developers what is possible with the new tech and maybe also inspire them. The Wii U will probably be a generation behind.

It's tied to the system itself, so you'll just have to redownload them once you put in a new hard drive.

Just in case it ever happens, if your PS3 dies and you have to get a new one, you can contact Sony and they can transfer the songs onto the new system.

Stupid gaming questions that don't deserve their own thread:

Will Pikmin 2 EU work on my hacked Wii like Xenoblade and Last Story or does the 50hz/PAL thing screw it up?

I ask because Pikmin 2 US comes out this week in US and is worth picking up maybe.

This isn't worth a topic, so here goes.

Went to a retro game store yesterday. Bought 7 games, 6 of which were cartridge-based (Ecco the Dolphin, Shining in the Darkness, Pilotwings, Wild Snake, Beetle Adventure Racing and Tonic Trouble being the cartridges, Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep being the non-cartridge-based one). Knowing full well how retro cartridge games picked up second-hand tend to be, I applied the usual isopropyl alcohol & Q-Tip method to the contacts, getting all the dirt & dust I could off of them. This generally worked... for five of them.

Yeah, when Tonic Trouble is in the N64, the N64 doesn't output a signal. I doubt this is the N64's fault, because it can run several other titles that I tossed in there (SM64, Majora's Mask, Turok 2, Beetle Adventure Racing, etc.); it's just this game. So, I have to ask: where isopropyl alcohol and Q-Tips fail me, is there a way to get this game working already, or will I be needing to make a return trip to return this?

What is the best (possibly free too) software to share my PC game? I have an twitch.tv and the dyyno broadcaster has issue working.

Singstar DLC is tied to the console IIRC. From what I can remember from when I upgraded my PS3 HDD, I just had to redownload the songs from the SingStore (even if I did a full backup of my original disk, and transferred the backup to the new disk). If you buy a new PS3, however, you have to contact Sony to get them to transfer your SingStar downloads. Good luck!

Edit: Just noticed your question had already been answered ._.

Would this be a good idea for a game?

(read before you respond)

Okay, I don't know how this makes sense in the mold of your typical 3D action/adventure/RPG/what have you game. This idea is just one that came to me one day.

So...what is one of the oldest, tried and true gameplay designs? Well, tennis. From Pong to Breakout to Virtua Tennis and every thing in between, tennis video games hit that sweet spot of brain candy that twitch gamers just love. Just about anyone has played a game that's like tennis on a video game platform.

So what's another fun gameplay idea? Skating. That is, skating really fast. Even though the Tony Hawk series was run into the ground, resurrected, and buried again, the idea of a guy on wheels is just cool. Not just skateboarding, but rollerblading works too. You can get where you're going faster with skates, and let's face it, it's just more fun than running.

So what if a game combined these two ideas? I've thought about how this would work without a conflict, and this is what I came up with.

Imagine an on-rails action game in which you're skating to avoid obstacles/enemies while returning fire at the enemy's forces. When an enemy shoots at you, you can hit a "return" to destroy it. All of this could be mixed with power-ups and fun ways to kill enemies like smash shots that cause huge area explosions.

The game could move at variable speed depending on the situation, but your battleground is basically a mobile tennis court that you can't fall off of. With the skates, you could get around the world quicker and leap above enemies that you failed to take down with your shots.

Enemies might bound off the wall behind you, giving you another chance to kill them with your "shots".

Bosses show up to challenge you to a form of tennis wherein a shot hit past them cripples their defenses, enabling you to go in for the kill.

Maybe there are allies giving you extra "shots".

I'm a maniac at Virtua Tennis 4, around 250th in the world right now and climbing. I think this gameplay is so addictive that it could be integrated into some other kind of game.

Anyway, all of this might sound very rough, but I think it could work in the hands of the right developer.

I already have regular Red Dead Redemption, I've played a few hours of it and I like it. Is it worth getting the GOTY edition one and just giving the regular one to my brother or should I keep what I've got and just get the Zombie disc separately?

Basically are the other things in the GOTY one any good if I'm not interested in multiplayer? Any cool costumes, any bonus items or something that are helpful?

Cheers.

Do you guys think that Metroid Prime Trilogy will keep going up and up on it's price? I'm asking because I want it, but I'm not sure if this inflated price will get back to something more reasonable later on, or will it keep going up?

PAL or NTSC?
