This thread is for stupid GAMING questions that don't deserve their own thread

According to Wikipedia, the iQue GBA was the only Nintendo handheld with a region lock at the time. It will only play Chinese carts. Does anyone know if the same is true of the iQue GBA SP+ (AGS-101)?

I would like to ask if someone knows the EU release date for Mugen Souls? Looking around online gives me some confusing dates, Amazon gives me the 28th September 2012 which sounds okay but the official NISA site lists the 16th October 2012 for the US launch, does the EU really get the game first?

Yes, because it was pushed back in the US (I think they had some manufacturing issues or something like that).

Ah okay thanks! For once a game releasing earlier here gives me trouble as September is packed with waaay to many games :( So it looks like I will push back Borderlands 2 to my birthday and get Mugen Souls first and I might even try to do a OT for it :)

I am considering trying to play FFVIII again. I only got about 2-3 hours in last time I played it back on PS1 years and years ago. As I can now play it on the Vita (and I've "grown" and "matured" in my gaming tastes), I want to give it a fair shot. The thing is, I can't stand the idea of draw-casting and the stupid min/maxing that goes on as a result (since, if I remember right, the spells you draw can be linked to your stats to increase them?).

An odd question, but what tips would you folks have to someone trying to experience FFVIII to the fullest without going crazy? Is it really necessary to draw/cast 100 spells from every enemy you find?

It's not "necessary" to draw 100 spells from each enemy, but early-game it's the best way to keep your stats up if you're into that sort of thing. Learning GF abilities is far more important since:

1) getting 100 of each spell becomes easier with their abilities since you can turn items into spells, spells into more powerful spells, and Triple Triad cards into items.
2) some of their abilities make casting curative magic completely redundant (Recover/Revive/Treatment), letting you keep said magic on your HP stat.

So yeah, getting 100 of each spell as soon as you encounter it is really up to you, but learning GF abilities is where the real meat of the game's customization lies. It IS important to get 100 of certain spells (Death, Break, Confuse etc) since you can use those spells to protect your party members from those status effects.

And above all else: don't try and spread yourself thin and give magic to all your party members. Pick three characters you like (well, Squall and 2 others) and stick with them. Because GFs are interchangable, you won't be crippling yourself if you decide to use someone else. Transfer GFs and Magic from one character to another, and you'll still be fine.

GAF, I'm interested in getting a PS2 console, since I never owned one. Do you know what's the best/cheapest place to get one from? Or at least the safest place to buy them used?

Just got a factory sealed one from Sony Style for $99.99 shipped.

GAF!

I need this answered.

I have a Red Wii Super Mario Bros. Edition. It does not have the stickers on the tabs. I bought it brand new from Amazon. I can't remember if I opened it or not.

What I am asking is did the original Wii's come with the sticker's on the tabs or not? If they did I am going to keep it and use. If they did not I will sell it as factory sealed still to some anal collector for mega millions. They are fetching a nice penny factor sealed.

Dear GAF,

I want to eventually play my Wii U on my computer monitor.
I've been using microsoft's custom RCA to HD VGA cable for the 360 so that's all that I'm familiar with.

Are there female hdmi to male VGA adapters that I would be able to use? And how would I go about using headphones with that?

GAF, how come for the majority of new games the UK and Europe has to wait 3 more days to get them?

Having Borderlands 2 on my PC at the same time as my US pals but not being able to play it for some reason will make me sad.

It's just the way that distribution is set up. The retail chain in Europe is set up to print, store and ship games on a certain date and then get them to all stores, all before the release date that has to be set way in advance. In UK/Europe I think Thursday is just the day it is set as and has been for years. This has a knock on effect to digital as retailers and some publishers get pissed if digital distribution has a head start on them and gets more sales because they are still waiting for all their stores to get the physical stock in.

In America that release day just happens to be on Monday I think, same process, just a different day. But then again EU distribution is a wee bit more difficult, you have to print covers/manuals in different languages and make sure the right languages get to the right countries.

Even pure digital distribution on Steam has to be staggered and planned a couple of weeks in advance to make sure all releases get some time on the front page/new releases.

So, GAF, I was just replaying Banjo Tooie and all the Stop n' Swop fiasco flashed back right into my head, which raised the following question:

With the existence of the Controller Pak, why didn't RARE try to transfer the data from one game to the other via "Save States" instead of hot swapping the cartridges?

I can't seem to find and answer on the internet, so that's why I ask you -who holds all the truth-, holy GAF.

I'm stuck in FFV, the PS1 version. I've got an airship. My party is lvl 26. I can enter a base of sorts in the sea. Mid and Cid have found some books. I can go to, but not open, a door where Bats says: "There's danger ahead.".

What should I do?

More of a general tech question:

I recently hooked up a wireless router for a friend. Everything appears to be working correctly, computer/phone/ps3 can get on the internet wirelessly no isssues.

BUT he is having an odd problem with his 360.

The 360 is wired directly to the router, and when wathcing netflix he has reported that it his 360 losses internet connecton (after a period of time 30 min or so).

Unfortuantly I have not wetn over there to actually see this happen...

Any ideas as to what could cause this...

A good (cheap) controller to use for steam games?

How cheap? I think the Xbox 360 controller is the best one to use for PC games as most support it natively. You can get the Hori Xbox 360 Pad EX 2 for $34 from Amazon, and it´s even cheaper from some sellers. It´s a pretty good pad, I like it better than the original MS pad.

Question...

Is it still worth getting a PS3 this late in the game?

I've had my 360 for a long time, but lately, I've been thinkin' about getting a PS3, because of a few exclusives and well, I guessed I've warmed up to Blu-ray films in general... so what do you have to say to this?

wait for the new ps3 slim slim coming in 2 weeks, than yes lots of great games on ps3 uncharted, god of war and so on, and lots of new ones to look forward too

Time for one of my "definitive version" questions, for two series:

There's a bazillion versions of each 3D Ninja Gaiden; Sigmas, Blacks... What's the definitive version for #1 and #2? (I know better than to ask about #3!)
I don't particularly object to playing on a portable device.

And, on a *very* different note: There's Ys titles on Steam, on PSN, and on Virtual Console. What's the best version of each of those? I don't particularly mind the TG16 filter on VC, if that affects matters.

For the English versions:

Ys - Chronicles for the PSP
Ys II - Chronicles for the PSP
Ys III(r) - Steam version of Oath in Felghana
Ys IV(r) - Buy a Vita and hope for a translation!
Ys VI - Fan-translation of PC version, or PS2 version. It's possible that the PSP version is alright if you use custom firmware.
Ys VII - PSP version
Ys Origin - Steam version

(r) - remake

What are the default tyres in Gran Turismo 3? In the tune shop I have the choice of simulation-, sport-, racing- and dirt tyres. If I buy sport tyres, would that be an upgrade over the default ones? When you buy a car in GT4, there is a message that explicitly tells you that "Your car has automatically been fitted with medium sports tyres...", that's why it is making me curious. I'm currently at the beginning of GT3 and can't "afford" purchasing redundant things.

Quick/weird question:

I want to get a Windows phone for achievement hunting on the go. Is there a way to just have the phone for games and not be under some sort of contract or pay as you go?

Have there been any hints that Capcom will make surprise game announcements at TGS 2012?

I want to play my Dreamcast on my new HD TV but I get an annoying black bar on the right side of the screen. Adjusting the aspect ratio doesn't help, and I have no idea what can cause it. I have a direct scart-cable that I use:

My screen looks like this:

Do I need a different cable or something

See if your TV has a VGA input on it. I believe Dreamcast supported VGA, although I never owned one and I don't know if a VGA cable will solve the problem. Still, the picture will be slightly better than with RGB.

do the Ys Chronicles versions of Ys 1+2 have the amazing TG-16 OST? if not, they are inferior.

I haven't played through all God Of War Games properly.

Does Kratos ever smile or laugh?
He is not allowed to laugh, it is a rule of making a GoW game, seriously.

He does kind of smirk/smile a couple of times when he is going to enjoy killing someone.

He's not a happy chappy, understandably so, given what's gone on in his life and what he gets up to. All GoW games are worth playing though.

ahh thanks

Probably the erotic moments right? or is he on rage mode there too? haha

Anyway I still need to finish God Of War 3

Haha, no, it's actually in Chains of Olympus when he
meets his daughter again in the Elysian fields
, and his attitude towards
Pandora
in God of War 3. He's really not a particularly happy character, besides those brief moments. And as Toppot said, all the GoW games are worth playing. Even GoW: Betrayal :lol

Yeah makes sense.

But not all laughter has to be happy laughter. :D
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gzpkPy7H700

He's not allowed to laugh period =P Not for any reason. If someone had even the idea to put it in a game that he turns mad and laughs or is controlled by some force and made to laugh Sony would probably stop them right there and make then change the plot or rewrite a part.

Even since he was a kid he didn't smile or laugh, growing up in Sparta was tough, and he was more concerned with fighting and being a warrior.

Go to like 22 minutes in to see the rules for Kratos in any game (God of War or not)

Sony is so mean :( Kratos should break the rules once again and find laughter in life. :)

I'll watch that video later, thanks!

I am having a problem.

A few days ago I booted up Oblivion to continue my adventures through Cyrodiil.
At some point during a bout with a pirate, I realized that my character was ceaselessly attacking no matter what I did.

After the pirated died, the endless attacking still went on. Just non-stop swinging of the sword. All strong attacks too.

I eventually rebooted. Problem persisted. Then I started a new file. Problem persisted.
I tinkered around with the menus on the dashboard (any menu where RT would elicit a response) and got the same effect.

So, I'm guessing something is wrong with the controller. The trigger isn't physically stuck, but for some reason the controller is sending the signal over and over again all the same.

I was going to open up the controller, but can't because there are unique screws in the back that require a special tool.

Has anyone had this problem before or does anyone know how to fix it?

Do you have any other kind of controller plugged in? I had a similar issue with Battlefield 3 when I had a guitar controller plugged in, my guy would immediately stare at the ground and start shooting while spinning in circles.

So if you have one, unplug it.

No I just have the one controller plugged in.

Something really weird I noticed -

If my character's weapon is not drawn, they will not automatically draw their weapon. Since the same button is used to both draw weapon and attack, one would assume that if the controller is malfunctioning, then the character would automatically draw the weapon upon loading the game file.

However, this doesn't happen.

It's only AFTER I manually draw my weapon that my character goes berserk and won't stop swinging. This seems to suggest that there is a glitch rather than a controller issue.

On the other hand, if it's a glitch, then why would the problem persist on an entirely new game file?

WTF

Okay, new iOS user here (switched from Android) with a stupid question:

When you buy a temporarily free app (like Kingdom Rush), does that count as a purchase? If I uninstall it later and decide I want to come back to it, do I have to re-purchase? I ask because I didn't get the whole buy confirmation dialog that I did when buying a paid app.
