This thread is for stupid GAMING questions that don't deserve their own thread

So I noticed that on my 3DS there seems to be outlines on some stuff when the 3D is at the maximum level, but they disappear completely if I lower it a little bit. It's especially noticeable in Swapnote if you have a white or light colored background. There's just.. yeah these sort of outlines around whatever is drawn/written. But if I lower the 3D slider around 2 millimeters it disappears completely and everything gets sharper as well. It's not very blurry otherwise but I can notice a small difference. I don't think it's the regular crosstalk effect because I still see that on dark backgrounds after I lower the 3D.

I also notice it in the friend list. At the sides of the card/window with the friend info, where the card meets the background, there's like an extra line just outside of it. I can only see this line with one eye per side. So if I close my right eye I can see the extra line on the left side, but not on the right and vice versa. This also disappears if I lower the 3D slider, but the weird thing is that I have to lower it more than 2 mm here. More like 4 mm.

When it disappears it's very sudden and not gradual, and always at the same place on the slider depending on the software.

Haven't noticed it in any games yet but I'll have to try a few more I think.

Is this normal with the technology used in the 3DS screen or is something up with my 3DS?

So I've got a 360 that was replaced during Microsoft's big "repair all RRODs" period, so it's what, 3 years old? Back in 2011 I got a new PC and my xbox has only been used intermittently since.

Tonight I was in the mood for some Geo Wars 2 and played for a while. I actually thought to myself how great the resolution, frame rate, and responsiveness are on this game. Well, after about 30 minutes, I start to see significant screen tearing. I can't imagine why this would happen. System's off now... maybe later it won't happen again. Was it the GPU overheating or something? Any theories?

Can't say for sure but i too had mine replaced and then since i would play more on PS3 i hardly touched my 2nd 360. But, then i got Gears 3 and played quite a bit of it until again RROD.

So, i say trade it in one of those Gamestop deals while it's working and get a new slim model.

So GAF, I want to get back into the SNES game and replay A Link to the Past and I'm wondering. Are there any better alternatives to the standard component cables for the SNES/N64/GCN?

It's a PAL system if that helps. The TV is an fat widescreen set. Not that composites isn't already a better alternative than the original antenna adapter cable thingamabob, but still. I read that SVIDEO cables are supposedly better than composites?

The "My Documents" folder as well. A lot of games store their saves there.

Might as well back the entire user Profile folder up

For PAL the best cables you can have for SNES and GC are RGB Scart cables. I've read that you can't use the same cable for both though, but I've done that for years without any issues. Dunno if there's something special about my cable or not but I don't think so.

Unfortunately the N64 does not output RGB signals, at least without modding and only a few PAL systems can be modded. So the "best" for PAL N64 is S-Video. I say "best" like that because PAL N64s has terrible output with S-Video. I've tried two S-Video cables on my N64 and it just looks very disappointing. Frankly the regular composite cables look much better than S-Video on PAL N64s except for the color bleeding. From what I understand they put all their effort into the composite output for PAL systems and didn't bother with anything else. PAL systems also have much blurrier output overall compared to NTSC systems. It's a bummer all around with PAL N64s unfortenately. =/

This is a SNES, not a N64. About using the same cable you should be able to, I used the N64 composite SCART cable with the SNES and the Gamecube.

Edit: Apparently using the RBG cables for PAL SNES consoles requires soldering. :(
Seems there are RGB Scart cables made specifically for PAL SNES though, should try and track one down :)

Edit #2: Found one! Fitted for PAL systems as well.

Why is it such a chore to see the bigger size of pictures on this forum? On Chrome if you click a picture, it makes it bigger but for only as long as you hold down the mouse button. This makes it impossible to scroll. Most forums just allow you to click the picture once to see its full size and it stays that way until you click the picture again. It is annoying having to open new tabs for every single full size picture.

:edit Also tried it on IE10, same behavior.

Click picture, scroll with arrow keys.

I just mentioned N64 because you mentioned "SNES/N64/GC". And yes you shouldn't have to solder anything. As you discovered there are RGB Scart cables made specifically for the SNES and GC. And with composite cables you can use them on all three systems just fine, but I've read that with RGB cables it's different. But as I mentioned I've been using my RGB Scart cable for both my SNES and GC without issue, so it might just be something sellers say to make you buy more cables.

Edit: ^Or click and drag the picture a little. Then when you let go it will stay big so you don't have to keep holding the mouse button down. You still have to scroll with the arrow keys though because once you click again it will get small again.

I've just got the FE Ltd Edition 3DSXL. I already have a 3DS, which I've outfitted with a larger-than-standard SD card. I want to migrate my stuff from the 3DS (Ambassador!) to the XL, which means I also need to get Fire Emblem from the default card to my card. Is it right to assume I can simply redownload it from the shop after the transfer?

Yeah I noticed there seems to be some issues as well. But it seems to differ among different consoles, even if they are all PAL. But yeah, thanks for the RGB tip anyway!

Hmm this is an interesting one. I have no clue myself, but I would think that the system you transfer to would be formatted, meaning you would loose Fire Emblem? Not sure though. I also look forward to an answer to this.

Edit: After some googling I found this thread on gamefaqs that asks a similar question. According to them you can indeed download the game from the eshop again after you do the transfer.

Is there a Gamecube controller with a good dpad? I recently got a GameBoy Player and the normal GC controller isn't all that great for action games.

You're probably better off getting an adapter for whatever systems controller you prefer.

There's also this:

But the D-pad is really stiff.

Why'd Derrick get banned? I'm always interested to see why he gets the boot since it seems like he's on practically untouchable terms with mods.

Why does my Xbox Slim's fans rev up super hard when i turn my Xbox off while something is plugged into the USB port. Sounds like it's taking off, and I have to unplug it to make it stop.

Which version of Blood omen 2 is considered the best?

You are mistaken, there is no game called Blood Omen 2.

If there was, then I assume the PC version would be superior to others. I would avoid it in all cases though, as an imaginary game that does not exist and was never made featuring one of the best characters in gaming is not worth the air you would consume while playing it.

I got a question!

What is the black fuzzy shadow that surrounds certain things in games these days?!

You can notice it a lot in Farcry 3, especially when you're skinning an animal.

Thanks.

It's called Screen Space Ambient Occlusion.

It's meant to emulate the subtle shadowing you see in real life on objects, but when games implement it poorly (Like Far Cry 3), you get a haloing effect around some objects.

You see it a lot in Ass Creed too. I kinda hate when it happens. Its very jarring.

Thanks for answering!

Can someone explain the concept of rollback in netcode? I can't wrap my head around how it is possible to create online gameplay without input delay and still keep the gameplay synced.

Can someone explain the concept of rollback in netcode? I can't wrap my head around how it is possible to create online gameplay without input delay and still keep the gameplay synced.

I'm not a developer or coder but I'll try my best to explain how it is as I understand it.

Player 1 and Player 2 are connected via the internet, they know how much ping and latency is between them. Rather than P1 transmitted 'I pressed square' then P2 getting that message and then P1's character performing that move on P2's screen. Instead the game says 'I know this move will mean in player 1 will be here 0.5 seconds once the move has happened. This allows the game to know where P1 will be in the future and P2 can make thier own move and interact with P1's move in the future. Taking latency and ping into consideration.

At the same time exactly the same thing is happening on P1's screen. It gets P2's data and knows where P2 will be in the future and can react accordingly. This is constantly updated with current and future possible positions so that they can 'sync'.

The problem lies in running the calculations quickly and having accurate knowledge of input lag and latency/ping online and processing time.

there's someone selling their Wii U w/ digital games on the Buy Sell Trade.

Even though the games are locked to the hardware, I thought they were still linked to someone's Nintendo account. So if you sold a Wii U w/ digital content, wouldn't it still have your account on the system?

OK definitely does not deserve its own thread but please please please WHAT mod is this and where can I get it?!

Well I'm usually pretty good at google-fu but i have no idea where this is from or where to get it, other than the map is a mcdonalds map in counter strike source.

Yeah man I tried everything! Help me GAF, you're my only hope.

But really, I want to shoot some Pocky before it rescues those hosties.

It might just be custom models instead of a full-fledged mod. I know in the Left 4 Dead's for example you can swap out the survivor models for whatever you want, but of course other people you play with won't be able to see them.

Then again with the animations on the pocky it looks like something someone put some effort into.

It would still have your account, and all your purchases. Whoever buys your WiiU gains control of your account and games.

There are a few candidates (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_look). I would go with Heretic or Ultima Underworld, but it's been a while since I last played either of them.

I'm not talking about free look, but freeaim. Like in let's say in Operation Flashpoint or (to a lesser degree) in Insurgency 2. While you have your FPS aiming, you can move the crosshair around and aim that way.

Unless that's what UU and Heretic had, but at that time? Don't think so...

Wiseass. I've only seen one and there was nothing of interest.

I think the previous poster is probably trying to preserve the sense of exploration that is so crucial to Super Metroid by not telling you exactly where to go. Never the less, I'm pretty sure there's a green door very close to where you get the super missles, and it leads to the next area, if you follow it through far enough.

Edit: I've literally just played this bit in my playthrough I'm doing now so here's what I've done:
Go through the first green door, then you need to shoot a super missile at the little block in order to morph ball through a corridor. Then you'll end up back where you were before you went to fight the plant boss. Go to the bottom and if you haven't already, get the charge beam from underneath the floor. To the right of here is another green door, pass through it to proceed. If you get to the plant area and think you are stuck, don't forget you have a run button to use.

This is kinda gaming related but why are the justin.tv/twitch.tv mobile apps so terrible? Does anyone know of any good alternatives outside of the official apps?

If I buy the PAL version of Dragon Quest IX, can I play it in German?

I live in the States and want a German copy of Dragon Quest IX and I don't know how this works.
Must I find a German copy specifically or can one select the language on any PAL copy?

No, any PAL copy should have German, English, French, Italian and Spanish. Dunno if you can select it independently or if it picks your system's language.
