Yes, but if kept out of sunlight and warm temperatures they can last for years.

What cable do I need to hook up my Wii to my Dell monitor? I'm getting major headaches trying to research this, cables are like maths to me.

GAF Video/Monitor tech support please!

Help me understand something -- do monitors require drivers too, or just video cards?

I disconnected my PC from my monitor so I could take it over to my new Plasma to try out its PC-Input feature. Seemed to work fine, but I noticed several applications wouldn't work correctly (games, video/media players, etc), usually issuing the error that they couldn't find an appropriate display device. Performance also seemed sluggish, with window movement and scrolling being extremely choppy.

So I was like, whatever, I'll disconnect it for now, do some research into what I have to do to get it to recognize and use my TV as a monitor, and just go back to using my PC monitor.

I reconnect it to my PC monitor, and the same problem persists. It's like it doesn't recognize this monitor either any longer. Old resolutions I was using (1650xsomething) are missing, and the same problems as I experienced when trying to use it with my TV are present.

It was working perfectly until I disconnected from this LCD monitor to begin with, so I'm skeptical about having to actually download something now to tell the video card or PC how to use this monitor, but is that indeed what I have to do?

edit- Hang on...any evidence that my computer is using my 9600 GT is now gone, in display properties and what not. I'm guessing the PC reverted to using its on board video card. No wonder everything's fucked up. I'm a retard; how do I tell it to start using the GT again? :lol

Power it down and open it up. It might be that you've just dislodged the video card when moving it.

But I mean, the display cable (and my monitor) are connected to the port on the video card, where it's accessible in the back of my PC. Were the card actually dislodged, wouldn't it be completely non-operable, and I wouldn't have any picture whatsoever?

There's a separate port on the back of the PC for the onboard video card. I assume the PC would require you to use that port to actually use that card? I mean, my GT must be operating to get the display I have, however broken it is, right?

edit - All fixed. I just reinstalled the latest drivers. It's like they just chose to stop working upon connecting the PC to a new monitor.

I should look into how to prepare the card adequately before hooking up a new display, I suppose?

I've been looking for a thread for a while figured this would be the best place to ask. It's a thread about sharing scary stories, it's not the unsolved/paranormal thread. Was looking to send some of the stories to a friend, because regardless if true or not, some of them are scary as hell.

Bumping this.

Why aren't the episodes on the Arrested Development DVD set in the order the originally aired in?
Oftentimes, networks will rearrange the order of episodes for television airing for various purposes. Recently, Community aired an out-of-order, and Fringe had one from all the way back in Season 1 that made no sense at all.

The DVD is as was originally intended.

I feel so stupid for even asking, but can somebody calculate the slopes for these curves?

The blue one goes from 600 on y-axis to 400 on x-axis (so 2/3 or 3/2 or whatever)
The red one goes from 800 on y-axis to 160 on x-axis (so 1/5 or 5/1 or whatever)

:/

Edit: a friends says the slope is -2/3 and -1/5, but I somehow thing it's -3/2 and -5. Prove me wrong gaf.

See, that's what I thought so too.

(600 - 0) / (0 - 400) = -600/400 = -3/2

But that would mean I'm right and my friend wrong, even though I'm a complete retard in math while he's very good at it.

It can't be -1/5,

600 - ((-1/5) * 400) = 520

600 - ((-3/2) * 400) = 0

Now you're just messing with my head. :lol I have no idea what you're talking about. The -5 or -1/5 is for the other red line, right....

Argh, this is seriously irking me. I'm practically finished with a school task, but this little (and basic) thingy is preventing me from sending it to my professor. Luckily I have gaf at least, cause I seriously have no clue.

The constant you get by dividing delta-y with delta-x is how many Ys the graph diminishes by for each X. If you multiply the constant with the difference in Xes from where it "starts" to where it "ends", a difference of 400 X in this case, you should get 0 if you have the right constant. Your value is right, his is wrong.

When was the last junior member approval? And is there expected to be another one anytime soon?

I've got a couple friends in the queue (joining so they can participate in writing challenges :D), so kind of wondering...

okay, i recently connected my debit card to my xbox live account to buy some points, and today i noticed there was a charge for $1. the charge was probably just for verification, but i didn't get a notice or anything.
anyone know what this is? also, will they put it back? it's just a buck, but still.

I'm trying to look for a song from the Battlestar Galactica series. It sounds just like this song but it's slightly different. The song I'm looking for sounds practically the same, but it's more upbeat, sounds happier, sounds more epic. I remember it playing in the season finale. Sometimes it plays whenever the Six in Baltar's head talks to him. Either way... I need to youtube this frackin' song.

What's the song called? =(

January 1st. I think the last one was about 3 months before that, as I'd just gotten round to recreating my account so I could set up my subscriptions again. Having them all wiped out every few months during my 2 year wait for approval was not cool!

Can someone help me with posting pictures? I use picasa to host pics to the web, and I think photobucket too. I have read the faq, and its really just hit or miss on whether my picture will show up on the forum or not. Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesnt.

Also, whats the easiest way to quote multiple posts in a reply? Thanks!

I assume that you're using the tags properly. For photobucket especially, it's complicated - make sure that the image URL you're posting actually links to the image, not the image page. (Just click the input box labeled "IMG code" on photobucket and paste it in here)

AFAIK, there's no one way to quote multiple posts without copy/pasting or opening up the single post pages by clicking the numbered replies in a new tab.

Why does the laughing smilie look so fucked up evil when you select it for copy-paste (making the text blue, whatever it's called in English)? Man, that smilie looks evil.

Lets say I'm finally getting ready to give up on my Zune and I want to make the switch to iPod .. what would be the best version to get for the money if I'd like to watch video? Also, do iPods play avis? And finally is it best to just go for the gusto and get one now or is there any plans in the works for an awesome new model coming out soon?

All right, so hopefully the next one will follow the same pattern. Thanks!

iPods don't play .avi files, and new models are always introduced in September. iPod Touches are great for watching videos (3.5" screen vs. the Classic's 1.8"), and apps are a great bonus, but they're a lot more expensive than a Classic, and you don't get nearly as much space. (120GB Classic is $249, 64GB Touch is $399) If you've got tons of music, I'd get a Classic, and if you're getting it more for videos and apps, I'd get a Touch.

Why do left handed scissors need to exist? Doesn't either hand provide the same squeezing motion?

Edit: And to answer a question I noticed up top:

I just tried cutting with my left hand...they don't work. I'm not sure why that is, but I guess the same thing happens to lefties.

It's for the hole where the thumb goes. It's got a shape that's supposed to fit the inside of your thumb. A right handed pair of scissors would have a mirrored groove if you were to use it with your left.

A lot of scissors have asymmetrical contours, which get designed for the right hand. Although, by large, they do tend to be pointless (speaking as a southpaw myself), there is a valid reason for them.

But that really seems like it should be more of a hand comfort issue than a functional issue. I've just always been confused as to why a pair of scissors mostly refuses to cut things if you use it with the wrong hand.

That five hour energy commercial with the guy in the office. Did they change his hair or am I going mad? It looks like the exact same commercial but I swear his hair didn't used to be so "messy."

Agreed on this, the touch is the best for video and apps, but it's bulky and music navigation is cumbersome without a physical input device.

I convert all of my videos to ipod format with a free utility called iPodMe. I've used several in the past, iPodMe is the fastest, easiest and most reliable of them all.

I actually like the navigation more on the Touch. Plus, I like being able to select an album or artist and shuffle within that criteria. I wish I could do that with my iPod Video.

The earbuds that come with the Touch at least now has an in line control that lets you adjust volume, play/pause, and advance song (double click) or go back a song (triple click) in the playlist/album you are current listening to. So that at least lets you do the basic stuff without rustling it out of your pocket.

And all that is of course dependent on you actually liking iPod earbuds.

I bought a portable hard drive recently, one of the 2.5" ones that shouldn't need a power source other than from the USB. When I first plugged it in through a USB extension cable, it gave me a series of beeps before disappearing from My Computer. I figured that it was possible that it wasn't getting enough power, so I instead plugged it into a USB port on a front drive bay. It works fine now, or so I hope. Is there any reason that the USB extension cable wouldn't pull enough power from the port to power the hard drive? It powers my Wacom tablet just fine.

Okay, this is a technical question:

My television is a 32" 1080p-native flat panel. The manual says among its supported modes is 720p. I'm using an HDMI port on my computer to connect it to the TV. My graphics card is a 9600GT.

My question is: I want to game on my television at 720p when the game is more demanding of my meager setup, but I find that the edges are getting cut off at certain spots (most grievous is a good chunk of the top left hand radar in Just Cause 2). Is there any way to get my TV to scale the signal better, or is that just a side effect of going below your native resolution?

Thanks!

I don't know exactly where it is in the nVidia control panel (I've been using ATI for a while), but if you poke around there, you should be able to find options that tell your card to do all the scaling rather than your monitor. Your card will always send out a 1080p signal to the TV, and setting a game to run in 720p will make the card upscale it properly.

I was so glad when I found this option. My monitor leaves black bars upscaling 720p to its native 1080p for some reason.

Since I can't make a thread I'll ask the question here. I just got my first fish tank (10 gallon) and I'm dead set on getting a couple of glo fish and I'm also interested in starting a community. What other fishes will get along with my glo fish?

10 Gallon Tank would mean roughly 10" of fully grown Fish, I googled "Glo fish" and seems they are just hideously godawful coloured Zebra Danios.
They thrive best at temperatures above 22 °C (71.6 °F) and below 27 °C (80.6 °F). They need an aquarium of at least 10 gallons or more, and they do well in schools

So your looking at about 5 as they grow to 2" each. After about 6 months you could probably push it to 7 or 8.

Also. Welcome to HELL (aka First fish tank) :lol
I suggest reading these

I suggest the fishless as fish in is brutal.

Does anyone else think that the majority of people who constantly post pictures of themselves in the "Post Pictures of Yourself" thread do so because they don't receive the positive reinforcement they seek in their everyday lives?
