I'm trying to start PC gaming so I downloaded the Portal demo from Steam to see if I could run Team Fortress 2 without any problems, it was all good until I raised my resolution. The game was sluggish and response was slow. Why does the game run better at 1200x800 than 1680x1050? And how can I improve my computers performance?

PC details

Thanks in advance

Your video card is the weak link. You can get a <$100 card that will massively increase your performance. I think the 9100 is an integrated card actually.

The game runs better at 1200x800 because there are less pixels to render than at 1680x1050. Think HD vs. SD (even though those are both high resolutions).

Makes sense, I think i'll play with a lower resolution for now. I'll buy a new video card if I don't like it.

Thanks again

If there is no air in space, how can a rocket or a shuttle propel itself in outerspace? There is no oxygen for the fuel to burn.

In addition to the fuel tank, rockets have a tank of liquid oxygen that is mixed with the fuel just before it ignites. The oxygen has to be super-chilled down from a gas to a liquid state to be loaded in the tank, that's why you see ice form on the outside of rockets.

Where does the sheeeeeeiiit thing come from? if there a video of this?

There was a Smodcast on this topic, and they said you come completely normally, and it looks exactly the same as before.

I have never understood how walking/running raises money for a cause. Somebody explain please.

You have to get sponsors to donate something like $1 per mile. Get twenty of your friends to agree, run ten miles and that's $200. Organise a run where 500 people do this and you've got $10000 and an increased amount of social awareness.

People say hey I'm gonna run a 40k. Give me a dollar for every K. They are given 40 bucks and then they go run / walk / do whatever in the race.

Thanks, I have a Star Wars/Trek question.

Does the Star Wars franchise exist in the Star Trek universe? I mean as movie form, pop culture etc.

most of what you shoot isn't semen. it's just random-ass goo, with a sprinkling of semen. after a vasectomy it's the same goo, sans the sprinkle.

Can someone tell me why I can't play hi-def content on my PC without terrible framedropping? I just bought a new video card that uses the Radeon HD 4770 GPU specifically for this purpose and it hasn't helped a bit. I'm running Windows 7 (used to run Vista and it was the same way), I have two gigs of RAM, and my processor is 3.00 GHz. Those are all decent specs, right? And as far as codecs I'm using the CCC pack and playing my videos with VLC (when I use Windows Media Player Classic, the audio and video go out of sync and the framedrops are just as bad). With VLC, still though, I get massive framedrops and the entire video will hang up every ten seconds or so.

Also, when I go to watch the video, I close every process I possibly can so that there's nothing pulling on my system at all.

What am I doing wrong?

Old question I know, but I thought I would add some input to it.

From my understanding (I am by no means an expert) you need to be using an application that offers DXVA. VLC does not have this, but Media Player Classic Home Cinema does.

I just tried it out on a 1080p file in both VLC and MPCHC and noticed less CPU usage and no stuttering in MPCHC.

Do the writers of the BBC's Robin Hood seriousley expect us to believe that the inhabitants of mediaeval England wouldn't have batted an eyelid at a black skinned member of the clergy? Or a woman in a seat of judicial power? I know the series is aimed at children & their families, but should the writers really be whitewashing the racial & social unequalities of the past just for the sake of presenting a wishy-washy idealistic version of a much beloved folk tale?

I've got 2 about cars. Since I don't know a thing about cars there will probably be more when I think of them.

1) A (non-convertible) car's interior is airtight, right? So theoretically, if all the doors and windows of a car were shut, the fan and A/C were off, and there were more than a couple people in it, would they eventually run out of oxygen?

1b) On that note, what happens physiologically if you're in an enclosed room and all the oxygen around you is replaced with CO2? What happens when you try to inhale?

2) I sometimes see trucks on the road with four tires on the rear axle--two sets of two. What's the point of that?

1) Car interiors are not airtight. The insides of locked cars will get flooded when a car is immersed in water. They probably would asphixiate all the same though, since the rate of oxygen renewal might not be enough to keep them all alive.

1b) You inhale gas, same as usual, and feel the same inrush of air. Thing is, your body mightn't notice until it's too late and you collapse. This happens a lot in mine shafts.

2) Why do really small, thin women leave marks on wooden floors when wearing heels? It isn't because they're fat/heavy, but rather because the limited surface area on the bottom of their feet concentrates the pressure exerted by their weight into one spot. The extra tires/wheels are there to spread the weight of the truck out and get more life out of the tires.

Why do Americans hate soccer?

It is the No.1 sport in the world you know...and for good reasons.

Some say it is not big in the US because TV stations can't make profit allowing a 45min half time without commercials, and also due to the fact of short attention span of American viewers...hence low broadcasting low acceptance. I don't know about that, but it does seem that the sports that are favourites of America have a lot of points scored per match

For a football(soccer) game, it takes at least 90 min and sometimes without even one goal(not like in the movie), but it's not dull, far from it, it takes extreme skills and physical fitness and the suspense building up is where the fun is.

yes you do.

Sperm is mixed in with semen further down the line, they snip the cord that mixes the sperm in.

You essentially become a man that shoots blanks.... and you can't tell the guns empty just by looking at it.

what do the letters S.O.S actually stand for?
Wikipedia says that S.O.S was used simply because it's an easy to remember/recognizable (if there's noise on the line) sign: . . . _ _ _ . . .

"In popular usage, SOS became associated with phrases such as "Save Our Seamen", "Save our Ship", "Survivors On Shore" or "Save Our Souls". These were a later development, most likely used to help remember the correct letters."

Me and my family always hated it because it feels kind of dull. There's not enough points involved in it, which is a weird complaint, but that's how we all seem to feel. If I'm going to watch a game for an hour and half, why the hell can it end in only one point?

But I don't really like watching any sports anyway. They're all pretty fun to play though (except cricket).

.

Baseball can end 1-0. As can icehockey. And american football (7-0 = 1 score)

Why do popcorn bags say DO NOT USE MICROWAVE POPCORN BUTTON. Why then, do microwaves have a popcorn button?

I didn't say it was a good reason, just a reason. But the difference with something like baseball or football would be the idea of it being performed in smaller bursts, so progress could be seen (ie getting bases, outs, or in football just watching the gradual progression towards the end zone).

And icehockey is just an excuse to watch grown men bash eachothers skulls in.

I'm going to drop off an application for an internship tomorrow. Should I wear a tie and slacks or is that too much?

edit: It's at a really small historical site.

double edit: it's not paid or anything, just to volunteer.

It might be too much. But, certainly clean up.

Smart casual, no tie, unbuttoned shirt at the top. Good luck.
