I have been given a portable DVD player which my partner would like to use on his frequent business trips to London. However, the instruction manual alleges that the battery is only good for 1½-2 hours and his train journey is longer than that.

So what are our options for extra battery powah please? I believe one can buy an external battery source to extend the practical time of use of portable consumer electronic devices such as handhelds, iPhones etc, yes? I presume something like that would work?

Any advice as to what to Google for; what products to favour or avoid, practical do's and dont's would be much appreciated :).

Every device in my home seems to be able to access the D-Link wireless router two floors up, save my desktop PC that I just threw a wireless PCI D-Link card into. It sometimes sees a 'Fair' connection for just a few seconds, then disappears.

What do you suppose gives?

Why is it that you can see the target of a laser pointer clearly for great distances, but you cannot see the beam?
Because the air is clear.

Try shining one through some smoke or a heavily dusty area.

If I make scrambled eggs using 4 eggs, then add slices of bacon to the mix and the bacon melts while cooking, does the bacon lose all its fat content because it has melted or does all its fat content get impregnated in the eggs anyways?

Depends on how much fat is left in the pan afterwards. Don't fool yourself into thinking you've made all the fat in the bacon go away though, there's a lot of fat in bacon.

What do you mean by bacon "melting" now that I think of it? Is this some American bacon made out of butter or ice cream or something?

It doesn't melt per se, it just shrinks a lot, what 4 slices of bacon used to be end up as being 1. Maybe I picked the wrong bacon. Now that I read the product is actually Pancetta, don't know if it's different from American bacon.

Pancetta is a type of Italian bacon.

Check the packet label for the water content. Manufacturers tend to bulk up meat products with water hence the shrinkage. They do this with bacon, sausages, whole chickens...:/.

what are the chances of Sony and Microsoft published games to be distributed via Onlive and GaiKai?

Little to none, I'd think. Sony doesn't make PC games---unless you're talking SOE. Microsoft, I'd guess not either, considering they've got their Games for Windows thing going.

How long does it usually take to go from junior to member status on NeoGAF?

This is not so much of a question as a comment.

I love that moment where, after being sick and having a lot of phelgm in your lungs, you cough and you know that the phelgm you just coughed up is the last of it. Just had that happen and I'm so relieved. Feels good.

What's the going rate these days for editing papers for grad students? Do people charge by the page or hour?

When I did it 10-12 years go, you put your contact info up in the English department with your rate. I think most people put $20-30/hour.

Not having much luck with getting responses, and this is probably one that doesn't have an answer I'll like. I got an HDTV for my bedroom recently, and it had phono audio outs rather than a 3.5mm headphone jack like many other small TVs have. I got an adapter cable in the mail today (yay for cheap cables with free shipping on Amazon) and plugged in this little USB-powered cylindrical speaker I've had for a while. It seems to work great...except that I can't control the volume at all. Even the face buttons on the speaker itself don't seem to do anything. It just blasts at what seems to be full volume as soon as I turn it on. I can't find any settings on the TV itself that seem to do anything either. Anyone know a general method for being able to control an external speaker via the TV controls?

If the TV software volume or speaker hardware volume doesn't work, and there is no master control in the Audio menu you're most likely SOL.
The usually method for aux output from a TV is via an amp/receiver so it may not be supported.

Hmm...that's unfortunate. I guess I can still keep it handy for if I really feel like blasting the volume. There was some setting in the menu for allowing amplifier control, but obviously it would be silly to have an amplifier in the bedroom.

Can someone point me in the direction of a nice drafting table for me to draw on? I'm sick of drawing my comics on a table or my lap and having my back hurt.

My architect friend actually made his own from some found wood, and from what I saw it looked pretty functional. (Had some string or wire running horizontally and vertically over it for some inexplicable reason and some other stuff.) I suppose that's not for everyone though.

Any reason why you want to use an external speaker in the first place? I'm having a hard time picturing what kind of weird setup you have going on- you have a new TV (with functioning built -in speakers?), but would rather use an external speaker, that has to be plugged into a USB port no less.

Well, regardless, you might want to lock into getting THIS. It's a mini home amp, accespts RCA in, and can output to real speakers or speakers that connect via headphone jack. I suspect that it's you USB speaker that causing the problems.

Like many small LED backlit TVs, this thing has some pretty tinny speakers. I was just hoping to get more oomph out of the thing without having to break out a huge set of speakers. It being on a small shelf next to my PC setup, I don't have a lot of room to spare.

That wouldn't work for me. I'd need to buy one already made. Thanks though.

Not a question, but something stupid I just made that doesn't deserve its own thread.

Is it possible to change the size of the tabs in IE9? Mine are kinda small and on my parents computer they are a lot bigger. I could have sworn I figured out how to make them bigger once but I have no clue now...

What happens after you use up your three wishes with a genie? Does the genie just die, or what? I mean, what's stopping you from rubbing the lamp again?

One only has three wishes so choose wisely young padawan!

After the third wish is used the genie is freed from his imprisonment in the lamp and can go about his own business.

I thought the idea was that they were imprisoned in that lamp and were thanking the person who released them with the three wishes. I also believe there are plenty of myths in Arabic tradition where the genie instead kills or takes revenge upon the person releasing it? Part of the reason why Aladdin is such a bad ass is because he has semi-control over his genie.

Writing this from memory so don't hate me if half this is wrong.

I'm trying to think of a movie (or series?) that was a campy superhero, and his name started with a C, I believe. It was really cheesy, and I think it came out in the late 80s/early 90s. Sorry for being vague. I can't remember the character's name.

On facebook is there a way to look at the feed of just the people you put in a certain list?
There's a "lists" thing on the left side of the screen that does what you want, but if or how it's possible to make a list for only your end I don't know.

That's one of the only memes i've never been able to get.

Members often use it wrong.

Is there a way to jump to YOUR last post in a thread on GAF?

Similar to how Something Awful has this:

TjFt6.png

It's showing how many posts have been made since you last logged in (I know that GAF doesn't have that, obviously) and then lets you jump to the post after yours.

Kind of gets old having to try and figure out what page you were on when you went to bed last night, especially the big game or Poli-GAF threads that move fast.

Yeah, it sometimes works, but mostly not. Seems to just jump to a random post towards the end. Oh well, maybe someday or at least when we get our post histories back it will be easier.

I'm pretty sure Wal-mart sells a cheap drafting table that's not too bad...

Yeah, here it is-- http://www.walmart.com/ip/Adjustabl...h-Black-Frame-And-Dual-Wheel-Casters/10996290

You can even order it online and have it delivered to the nearest store.

If you have a little more money, you should call your local art shops. They usually sell really nice big drafting tables, but they're never cheap.

Out of curiosity, what kind of comics are you making? PM me the answer, don't want to derail thread.

I'm curious as to why the iPhone Ringtone Thread is not simply The Ringtone Thread. Wouldn't that be better, just to put them all together?

Chrome/other browser question that's been bugging me for years.

Is there a way to open a folder on your bookmark bar and move things around, or even click on one, and yet keep that folder open? I'm trying to organize my bookmarks and every time I move a link into a folder, the folder closes and I have to go search for it again.

It's really bad because I'm Inceptioned on some of my reference folders. Folders within folders within folders. I did that to keep them organized, but every time I went deep into a folder and found a file I had to reopen and go deeper to find the next file over and over again.

My biggest annoyance.
