completely unrelated stories. you'll be fine, although you should really play earthbound ;)

How come when you pre-pay the cashier at the gas station, they try to hassle you out of the last couple of bucks? Usually, when you reach the final dollar or so, it'll start pumping reaaallllly slow. But today, I went to a BP gas station, and the pump actually stopped when I got close to filling the amount I paid for.

I pressed the pump, and it would pump for $.05 and then stop. I kept pushing it, and it would shut off after every $0.05 worth of gas. So I spent an extra minute pumping gas in increments of five cents until I filled up the $20 worth of gas I paid for.

I wasn't going to give them the satisfaction and drive away, no matter how inconvenient they tried to make it for me. But it did piss me off that they unneccessarily wasted a minute of my time.

My question is, why do gas stations do this? Do they try to scam people out of their monies this way? But in that case, can't the next car that pulls in fill their car with the left over $.50? Why do they only do it when you pay the cashier, but not when you use your card at the pump?

This is kind of a hard question to word without getting confusing, here goes...

I have just a standard 2 speaker stereo system, Im running the 2 channel audio from my ps3 to my stereo. If I'm playing a Blu-ray on my ps3, and go to the audio options (on the disc) to set it to stereo, and the only options are 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound...does that mean the disc doesn't support basic 2 speaker stereo, or is that always supported but just not listed as an option? In other words, if Im running just 2 channel audio, am I getting surround sound pushed through 2 speakers, and therefore getting the sound not as intended? Or does every blu-ray contain a seperate stereo sound file even if the only audio options listed are 5.1 or 7.1?

Basically I want proper stereo sound while watching blu-rays, how do I make sure Im getting it lol.

Edit: yes, my ps3 is set to stereo sound, Im just wondering about the on disc options.

is there a word for this.... when asking a question that the answer should be yes.

i have a friend who works in a Solon and every time i go there to see her, she starts telling her client(s) isn't he handsome....blah blah....

obviously you don't expect them to say no.

With 2 speakers you aren't getting the sound as intended (if its a never movie with a sorround mix).
I dont think that it's required to have a stereo track on the disk, and if there were one, it would probably just be a downmix of the 5.1 mix. I'm sure that your ps3 can handle this downmixing fine by itself.

DEAR GOD! help me MED-GAF

I ought to try to keep this short

1. 2 years ago I sat down in an awkward position for many hours when working on an art project.
2. This obviously led to med having a sore neck and very limited range of movements for weeks
3. After some time I went to the doctor who directed me to a physiotherapist who took his sweet little time to print me an A4 of excercises
4. Doing these didnt help at all... and I really did them for a long while without any results

fast forward to today,
it still hurts, every single day even though I'm a 22 year old student who works out every other day, healthy living etc etc etc

My upper trapezius hurts soo much I dont know what to do

I went to harvard and studied there for a term, while I was there I befriended a dude whose dad had an medical diploma/surgeons eductation from john hopkins, him and me sat down and he told me what I should do in order to get better which was

Do : use icepacks to cool the muscles, stretch, workout the muscle gently
Dont : overuse heatpacks, dont stretch the neckmuscles with any other movement than your neck. Dont do heavy lifting

I've been following this dudes advice but alas no result. It still hurts, I've been over every single god damn aspect of my life from my motherfucking clothes to my pillow, changing EVERYTHING but nothing helps...

Once I stood with a knife in my hand THIS close to jamming it in my neck/shoulder/uuper trapezius just so I would get surgery and maybe just maybe they would find something to fix in my neck.

This is as low as I can sink I guess, asking random gaffers for help...what else is there to do ? :S

You need to see an Applied Kinesiologist.

Is it ok to use a 360 to play DVDs? Will it cause un-due wear & tear on the 360 that will lead to red rings?
DVD drive usage won't lead to RROD. It can cause additional normal wear to the DVD drive causing it to fail sooner than not viewing DVDs, but this is not really measurable.

The typical error is dirty disk or insert disk when you already have.

OK - I've been making chiptune tracks with LittleSoundDJ in a gameboy color emulator, but I have no idea how to get the sound files into Audacity. I realize there is a method for getting the .wavs from the .sav files, but my version of LSDJ (which is NOT a demo version) doesn't seem to even have the save option, so I've just been saving save states of my songs.

So, I am wondering what I should do. Should I:

a) Try to fix/find the save feature
b) Find a program to record my mac's audio output (is there ANY free solution for this? Saw Wiretap Pro but that certainly is not free [70$!])

or the crazy alternative of

c) Run my computer's audio through my Toneport UX2, through my Yamaha Motif ES8, back through the toneport inputs and then let that go back to the computer. HOWEVER, will this cause something horrible to happen? Looping stuff through itself seems dicey. I would naturally have the toneport not monitor the input so there would be feedback but... I just don't know.

I realize this is complex and probably totally bananas, but please help me out if you can :[

Goddamn I should post more on GAF and get rid of my junior status. No one pays attention to these ever-present megathreads.

You can't expect every obscure problem to be solved within an hour. :lol Afraid I can't help, though.

My question of the day: HD is great, but I'm also an avowed frame rate whore. Sooo any worthwhile Blu-rays with a lot of 60 fps content?

It wasn't really the timeframe, it's just that after that hour once the thread has left the page, only people who have there own questions are going to see other peoples'. Oh well. I'll keep browsing other questions and see if I can help those people while I wait.

I dont think they concern themselves with frame rates for movies... I thought it was rather standardized... Might be wrong though

You are in luck! I only have a Mac here at work and I just used it to capture the audio-out from an Audible podcast. :lol

Here's a link to the page I used. Essentially, grab Soundflower, and Audio Recorder. You only want to change the sound output in System Preferences to Soundflower, and then configure Audio Recorder to record from Soundflower. Turn off monitoring (you'll get echoes), and record.

So i'm film student and they've asked me to talk about this:
mygodihatedoingwork.jpg

1) Does it have anything to do with film
2) What the hell is it
3) Anything else you can tell me about it.

Cheers.

It's an amplifier. I forgot every bit of that course though, so I can't help further. The triangle thing is an op-amp, operational amplifier. It doesn't look like any of the basic amps either... Yeah, sorry. If I was at home I could probably dig out my notes and find something more useful.

Chiropractor. No joke.

Have never heard about them, guess they dont exist here in sweden

Yeah guess I might awell get this a bit more exposure before I fucking give up

Chiropractor

Been there, done that, no results.

Got a number to the physiotherapist of my regions elite athletes, hopefully he will succeed where all others have failed.

Why would there be anything wrong with that?
Your races are simply a product of what area of the world your ancestors happened to be born in and your religions are a product of whatever scam your ancestors fell for. They shouldn't affect who you love and care for at all.

Why doesn't Alt Gr + E not work in Windows 7? (It should do the euro symbol)
Check the keyboard tab in your regional settings. I'm running the 64-bit version of Windows 7 and I don't have this issue. You could always use Alt + 0128 instead if you can't find a proper solution.

Maybe you should try going to a naprapat (it's called that here in sweden, not sure what it is in english). They're pretty much the same as a chiropractor, but with a slightly different approach. My dad has had back pains for a very long time, because of a work accident, and the pains got better after he went to a naprapat.

EDIT: And also, a few silly questions.

1. Recently I can't write @ anymore, but have to copy/paste every time. In fact, alt gr + 2, 3 or 4 doesn't do anything. Why? I'm on Win 7 and have swedish, english and japanese (IME) keyboards installed.

2. I've noted that on some HDTV-s the picture becomes ultra smooth, like the video plays at 60fps. Is this because those TV-s have 100Hz picture processing or something? I'm normally able to figure stuff like this out, but I just can't :/

3. Okay, the silliest one. Where do they get the water they fill swimming pools with? I'm talking about the big swimming houses with tons of water. I figured they can't really put on some tap water and let it run for a week or two, so how do they get it exactly?

R stands for resistance. That's about everything I know about this picture...

When you hold the door open for someone at a restaurant or some other place where you have to wait in line, is it cool if they go ahead of you and put down their name for a table BEFORE you? Or, should they thank you for opening the door and then return a favor by letting you put your name down first?

Well, naturally it would be nice of them to return the favor. However, it's hard to pay attention to every detail in a day and make sure you're always being polite, so if they do but their name down first, it's more likely that they're oblivious than opportunistic.

What is the libertarian position on child labor? I'm trying to answer a question in a philosophy class... how the egoist's view on not giving/accepting charity relates to how they would approach child labor in their ideal society.

I'm kind of reading around google/wiki... but I don't have enough understanding of this stuff to approach an issue like child labor.

A mix. Many times, with a brand new pool, a huge water truck will come by and fill it up.

But Ive seen hose + internal pipes + rain going at it as well. Takes a few days.

In many places, its illegal to empty a pool by dumping the water, so you need the truck that filled it to come by and suck it up.

It restricts the individual freedoms of the children.

idk it just sounds good. That logic could also be used to argue against adult labour, too.
