Haha, thanks. I generally used it to track my own posts on other forums, but I think I'll manage without it. Any particular reason for disabling it?

Was causing a lot of strain on the servers. You might occasionally get a Server Error these days, but back when search was enabled it was way worse.

You can at least track what threads you post in if you turn on auto-subscribe. You should turn off email notifications if you do that though, that could get spammy otherwise.

Are there extensions or scripts for chrome or firefox to make GAF a little more functional?

I'd like to have icons next to threads I have posted in, instead of saving subscriptions. Better yet, I'd to know what page I posted on, so I know where to read from in larger threads that get lots of posts.

Makes sense. I've subscribed to threads I know I'll post in regularly, but I don't really want 100 subscriptions to threads I'll maybe post in once or twice.

May be worth keeping an eye on this extension.

Currently has the option to highlight threads, but I think it only highlights threads you have created, and not all you have posted in.

Yes and no. Studies show that after a certain point--something like $75k/yr--additional money does not in fact make you any happier. Below that mark, less money could potentially mean less happiness (mainly due to stress over money), although do note that everyone is different in that regard.

You also need to realize that nothing is worth a job and career that you don't like. What's the point removing stress due to money if you're just replacing it with stress due to hating your job?

Besides all this, remember that it is your life. Your family won't have to live with the consequences of your choices; you will. Your family won't have to get up in the morning and go to your job; you will. Your family won't have to deal with your boss, your coworkers, your career; you will. So don't let your family's ideas of what will make you happy dictate your choices.

Can you find a middle path? A way to both make a decent living and do something you love?

There are a few possibilities. One is to find a career that is not life-consuming (read: not a doctor) and leaves you free time to pursue what you love. One is to find a way to make what you love a viable career--this is difficult (can it even be monetized?), and probably requires some sacrifice (i.e. stop buying videogames and iPhones and so on all the time). One is to defer doing what you love, though that's a huge trap. You might consider reversing that--go on your JET program, take up a "normal" career when you return.

I dunno, I'm just throwing stuff out there. The upshot is, make your own decision, and try to hedge your bets.

Thank you very much, Cyan. I've been talking to my friends about this and they've been helpful as well. I'll try to find a middle path.

Anyone remember the name of that woman who mowed down a bunch of people outside a hamptons club/restaurant some years ago? She was some sort of minor celeb and it happened pre-2005 i think. I'm not actually 100% sure that it happened in the hamptons but it seems right.

Where would be a good place to buy raw, uncut, unpolished granite hunks?
They make fine aquarium decorations, but hardware stores seem to only sell polished or already prepared granite for ridiculous prices intended for home use.

Because the pet store wants 9.99 for a plastic piece of granite, when I'm sure I can get regular, raw granite for way cheaper than that, and igneous rocks are totally aquarium safe.

Granite is fairly expensive, but I'd drive around or search for local gardening stores. Also, there are in fact stores that sell just rocks if you search hard enough. Never seen one outside of Florida though.

F7. You accidentally enabled "Caret Browsing". I had that issue a few years and back and it took me months to figure out the problem.

:lol That has been bothering me for years and the solution was so simple. Thanks.

Thank you! This thread is awesome.

Does anyone remember those early 1990s MTV commercials/bumps with that guy who liked to torture himself? They were like skits where the guy would ask someone else for something normal, but then tell the person to do something really strange and exaggerated. The one I remember--the guy goes into dry cleaner to drop off some clothes. As he's describing what he wants done, it gets weirder like "I'd starch....so much starch that it makes my skin itch and burn!" or something. Typical strange early 1990s MTV stuff from when they latched on to alternative rock. I'm wondering who the guy is and if anyone has youtube links to some of them.

Do you mean Tom Green?

I had a question concerning the email policy here. I know you're not allowed to register with a free email like Gmail. That part is blatantly obvious in the FAQ. What I'm wondering is that since my account is now active, am I able to switch to my Gmail account? The rules are a bit hazy in this aspect, since the rules only talk about when you sign up, and nothing else.

It's not a problem if i can't, it's more of a convenience matter.

I've been looking for places to buy good shirts. I've been at a loss trying to find some that look good in my eyes. I can't stand Hollister, American Eagle, and Abercrombie (sp?) shirts look as they just have their branding on it. I've lurked on shirt.woot for a while and I never found any designs that jumped out to me from there. Also, while were on the subject of clothing. Where can I find good zip-up hoodies from? I'm mainly looking for high quality that are either plain or a clever design.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Some shirts that I own and consider my favorite:

I love the silhouette design

When you click on the line to post a status, the 'Share' button pops up. To the left of that, another button pops up: a lock with a drop down arrow. Click that -> 'Customize' -> 'Hide this from'

I have a stupid question:

In regards to a Porsche VIN, what is the significance of the 'X' at the end of the VIN? For example, if I am told that the vehicle is a 1957 Porsche 356 Speedster, VIN 8213X, what is the significance of the X? Is it just the year the car was made?

This is for a hypothetical contract I have to draw up in my legal writing class. I don't know much about cars, but I can't see why I was told what the X is really that significant.

Thanks

Computer question. I built my own desktop about a year ago. Since about the new year, there's been a lot of grinding noise, which I narrowed down to the graphics card. It was annoying, occasionally blue screened, but I could manage it.

Go to play some TF2, and mid-match the computer just.... shut down. Started it back up, it shuts down at the login screen. I cannot log in to the machine anymore.

I suspect replacing the graphics card will help take care of things. But I don't want to buy a component if it's not necessary- is it possible that I screwed up the construction and it took this long to fail? Is it likely some other component failed instead of the graphics card? I know it's a loose description but I just wanted to open up the topic.

Can you take out the card and boot to safe mode via onboard graphics outputs?

I googled this out of curiosity and I found a reference to X in the 9th position of the VIN...

What Can Your Porsche's Vehicle Identification Number Tell You?

9th Character: The 9th character in your Porsche's vehicle identification number is a VIN accuracy check digit, verifying the previous numbers within the VIN. This check digit is a single number or letter "X" used to verify the accuracy of the transcription of the vehicle identification number.

There is a precise method for obtaining the check digit; however, it is not relevant to our discussion here. Suffice to say that after all other characters in the VIN have been determined by the manufacturer, the check digit is calculated by carrying out a mathematical computation. The correct numeric remainder - zero through nine (0-9) will appear. However, if the remainder is 10 the letter "X" is used to designate the check digit value.

Question that's probably been asked, but I can't be bothered to go back all those pages to check. Anyway:

In reality shows like COPS, how do they know whose face to blur?

The shows are pretaped, and I'm guessing the people they catch sign wavers to decide if they want to be on TV or not.

See, I posted it as a 'stupid question' because I knew there would be an obvious diagnostic action I hadn't thought about.

Computer seems to run fine with the card out, so I think my suspicions were correct. Gonna have to see what my retail options are, I can't really go very long without it running at full capacity.

EDIT: except it did just bluescreen with the card out. :/

Say, hypothetically Russia was at War with the West. Does the Russian Winter and sheer size of Russia mean shit anymore despite modern day military technology?

They literally marched troops behind tanks through the snow, without rides. Simple stuff like modern clothing would all but eliminate much of the hardship. Starvation would probably be less of a problem too. So it would be a factor, but nothing like in the forties. And the battle would be fought to destroy infrastructure, not take land.

Those are probably the last five of the VIN and that's the part that identifies that particular vehicle. The numbers in the beginning usually explain the make model type, year, and trim, plus some additional numbers to verify those numbers are right and produced by the manufacturer.

The X is just an unknown number since the last digit in the VIN is rarely anything other than an actual number.

It sounds like they don't want you writing up a contract for a real car out there.

How to change the size of an imaga in Photoshop with out using the specified pixel numbers? I would love to use some sort of bounding box t change the size of it accordingly but i can't figure out which tool to use....

Where can I find a inexpensive microphone to use on my Xbox 360 for vocals in DJ Hero 2? I don't own Rock Band or Guitar Hero so I'm not sure what works and what doesn't.

Ctrl+T/CMD+T/Edit > Free Transform brings up a bounding box with handles on the sides and corners you can use to resize an element inside of an image. See if that's what you're looking for.

and fromt hat you can copy paste it into a new document or use the trim function to resize the canvas.

So as the weather gets warmer my ultimate guilty pleasure is exposed: Gorgeous, dangling female feet.

Help me gaf.

I was sitting in the auto store when I saw the pretty feet of a woman with a face from hell and soon enough I'll be pretending to rest in class to momentarily gaze at some young and healthy college feet. My girlfriend has great feet but still, it's like hawking a nice ass for me (which I can't get enough of either).

Shall I try my hardest to not look at the ground? EVER?

No. Modern military vehicles are for the most part designed to operate in all weather conditions (within reason, you can't drive around in a volcano obviously) and high altitude combat aircraft are basically operating at sub-zero temperatures most of the time anyway.

I say it means "shit" because it won't really impede a foreign invader assuming they have a modern mechanized military and a world class air force (the only way they could even outfight the Russians in the first place), but it would still be an inconvenience. It won't stop the Tanks rolling in and siezing the country but it will play havoc with maintenance, and your average army isn't really equipped to patrol around in -12 degree temperatures. That said, a modern professional army will still be much better off than WW2 era conscript armies will because they tend to have much better equipment.

What does 'cheating a cost' mean in this context?

Biologically realistic models show how traits of cooperation and social orderliness can spread through a population; how moral virtues can be a benefit, cheating a cost and punishment of the socially dangerous a necessity.

ICallItFutile said:

Cheating is a cost [to the individual and/or society]. The writer dropped the "can be" but it follows a parallel construction with "how moral virtues can be a benefit" and "punishment of the socially dangerous [can be] a necessity."

So I was watching the Die Hard movies last night and I was really impressed by how awesome the set pieces. It got me very interested in how directors\screenwriters manage to create them especially when it comes to the creative process. I couldn't find anything useful on the internet so I thought Gaf might help me find any articles\ documentaries\books etc. about how they are created ? Not just in the Die Hard movies but in any form of media.

users can't delete posts, you can just edit it all out and put a "nvm"
