If anyone could recommend me a good Sci-fi book I would really appreciate it.

Anything with tones similar to any of these would be awesome:

Childhood's End by Arthur C. Clarke
1984 by George Orwell
The Inverted World by Christopher Priest

Speculative Sci-Fi is always a plus. I've read a lot of different stuff, but I'm sort of looking for good books that I may not be thinking of. The older the better.
Does soft Sci-fi count?

I would really really reccomend The Ring Trilogy by Koji Suzuki. I see you put 1984, then I can be assured that you will defently love it.

We have ''What are you reading'' thread every month and it would be a better idea to get reccomendation from those lot. they are friendly and have an awsome taste in many things.

Thanks for the recommendation! I'll check that out for sure and will hop over and snoop through the "What are you reading thread" :)

Okay, I know that magazines take a few weeks to write and print, and that's why the issues on the newsstand don't necessarily correlate to the actual month. For example, hypothetically, I would receive the December issue of EGM in September or so.

But why call it the December issue in the first place? Why not just call it the September issue if that's when the majority of the readers are going to be reading it?

It's the date when retailers are supposed to pull it.

I can't figure out what this silly band is supposed to be. It is annoying me like crazy.

Silly bands are rubber bands that are supposed to look like some recognizable shape when un stretched. What is this?

What's an affordable option for an MS Word machine? Good battery life and a decent size (not too small) are pluses, doesn't have to do anything else but run a word processor.

EDIT - Oops, meant to say "portable MS Word machine."

Get a netbook or a used desktop. You can probably get something for next to nothing at Goodwill. ANY machine in the last eight years will be fine for Word.

Is there a way to have Mozilla Firefox autofit web pages? Kind of like how a cell phone does...?

I have my netbook hooked up to a monitor and, for whatever reason, it looks shitty as hell on the monitor's recommended resolution. On a lower resolution, though, it looks really good.

Another question, does performance increase with lower resolutions? Maybe I am imagining things, but my shitty netbook seems to be running a lot faster with the resolution lower.

So, last year I imported the Animal Crossing: City Folk Soundtrack. I uploaded it to my iTunes and it was fine. As of recently when I go to a song from the soundtrack I get an error and iTunes closes. So, my question is coincidence or on purpose?

Just installed a copy of windows 7, and I noticed the new paint program which I hate.

Any way to get back the old paint? Please don't recommend gimp. I just want the old paint.

Bonus question: When opening pictures now, the whole crop/remove red eye/options that Vista had are gone. How can I get this back?

Not even... It's a collection of silicon breasted naked women, posing, showing off said breasts. Very little is shown of the other naughty bits, some pubic hair if you're lucky and an airbrushed ass cheek every once and awhile. Don't get me wrong, I used to get off to that shit when I was 11 years old but it was all that was available at the time.
Uh, no? I can take some pics of some Playboys and show you, but they show plenty of snatch and ass. It's not as graphic as in something like Penthouse (lips spread, roast beef, etc), but it's definitely not a rarity. Barely double-digit amount of photos is accurate, though.

In movies, TV shows and stuff, they often have one person aiming a handgun at another person at close range, they talk for a bit, Mr Gun does something with his thumb on the back of the gun, talk a bit more, then Mr Gun shoots Mr Victim. If the shooter has to do something before the gun will fire (cocking?), why doesn't the other person rush at them and hope to get them before the shooter can cock the gun and fire? And why wouldn't the shooter already have the gun cocked before talking or whatever in case they do get rushed at?

I'm from Australia where guns are basically non-existent so I don't really know anything about them, and it's been bugging me for a while.

I don't know if that's quite true, but I know what you mean.

Mr Victim has no way of knowing whether or not Mr Gun has prepared his gun. Mr Victim would in any case probably be in a state of disorienting panic, or might hold out hope that he can negotiate his way out of a stomach wound. Mr Gun is probably a douchebag, being the kind of person who shoots unarmed folks, so his casual delay can at least in part be attributed to a suave self-image.

Most people will never see a gun in their lives apart from what police carry, that's what I mean.

This is what made me ask, big spoilers from The Wire season 5:
When Michael pulls a gun on Snoop in the car, they're maybe 50cm from each other, she could easily reach out and grab the gun in the several seconds they're talking in the hope that it isn't cocked, but as soon as the gun appears she accepts she's dead.

Not an expert here....

But you can still shoot the gun without cocking it. Just takes an extra quarter of a second to pull the trigger to fire because you have to squeeze on the trigger to make the hammer go back by itself, and then forward to strike the bullet.

All that cocking does it remove the need for the trigger to bring the hammer back making it a little easier to fire. Rushing someone who didn't cock would save you probably quarter of a second. Not enough to do anything. MAYBE if the gun was pressed right up against you.

from cracked.com, regarding gun cocking:

That "click" is the sound of a hammer being cocked back, and movies seem to be saying, "This means the gun is ready to fire now, baby!" It doesn't mean that, however. It doesn't mean anything. The gun was already good to go.

For instance, the guns our hunky Irish assassins are using up there (the Beretta 92F--the same gun John McClane uses in Die Hard), is made so that pulling the trigger also cocks the hammer for you, to save you the extra step and the extra two seconds during which you could get shot. The "cocking the gun to show you mean business" must date back to Westerns, back when those old revolvers forced you to cock them between each shot (something that was made obsolete 150 years ago--so, yeah, Hollywood is even slower to catch up with gun technology than they are computers).

By the way, when you fire one of these guns like the Saints have up there, it's made so that it leaves the hammer cocked back in between shots (the reason is it makes the trigger a little easier to pull). We bring this up because that means the MacManus brothers purposefully de-cocked their guns before shooting that mobster, just so they could make that sound.

The thing that gets me is dudes with swords or knives who cut themselves to show how gnarly they are.

Now that has no explanation outside of the dude is a massive douche.

Rereading my post, I'm underselling it a bit. I guess I was exaggerating. If you're comparing Playboy to other modern pornography though, on the internet or video, well... you can't - it's a totally different beast. Then again, I haven't actually looked in a Playboy released in the last 25 years save for a couple of shitty celebrity centerfolds from the 90s.

I dunno if I'm posting in the right thread but I want your help gaf. I'm starting to work with Autocad (I'm studying civil engineer) and I need some help. Can you please point me some good tutorial sites, good forums that have tutorials and a good community and other stuff? Thanks

Where can I find my Amazon Promotional balance? The kind of credit that you get when you purchase a game and it says if you do, you'll get a $10 video game credit. I've been looking for this page for literally the past 30 minutes, where can I find it? Thanks in advance.

Is there a page for that? I thought it was just applied when you went to checkout.

Yeah I believe so. I've been to a page where it says like "MP3 Downloads: 2.00. eBook credit: 0.00. Video Game Software credit: 10.00" or something to that effect. I've also had the credit only automatically applied at checkout.

The only way I know to view that info is to act like your downloading a mp3, and under the purchase button there should be a "see promotions" link or something to that effect.

When we were kids women had natural hair so they didn't show lip, but everyone shaves now. I was kinda surprised when I saw a recent issue, but it's still super tame. Can't get off to Playboy anymore. I miss being able to get excited over airbrushed nudes.

I need help remembering a movie/show/video game. I can't remember which medium it's from, but whatever the work, its material was basically a mafia story.

Anyway, I remember just one scene from the work. In this scene, some mobster talks about not being able to do anything with someone who doesn't want money. The mobster is either trying to bribe or hire a stubborn person, and that person is budging because he doesn't particularly care for money. And that mobster is finding this irritating.

A line very close to "You can't do anything with someone who doesn't want money!" appears in the work.

Dammit!

I have a job interview at Home Depot for cashier position. I haven't shaved in about 3 weeks and have a light beard similar to this picture in length http://img13.imageshack.us/i/clinteastwoodz.jpg/sr=1

Should I shave before the interview?

I've never seen someone go for a cashier interview and not get the job, unless they had some egregious felonies or something.

Although, personally, I like shaving my balls before going to a job interview. They won't know, buy I will.. hehe

Is there any way to avoid tandem skydiving if you have never gone before?

I really want to skydive/base jump, but I don't wanna be anybody's 'little spoon'.

I've been trying to edit some footage I took with my DigiCam but I've run into some troubles. Whenever I import it into an editor, the sound doesn't play, and the video runs at like 3fps. I've tried these files with multiple editors. I know it's not the files themselves since they run fine in VLC. I know it's not my PC because I've been able to import HD files (the stuff from my camera is sub SD) and edit them without issue. I've also been able to edit other videos with the same file type (AVI) without the slowdown. Help?

What's the consensus on the anime, Gantz?
I watched the first three episodes and was all 'the fuck?' It seems pretty good but I don't have much spare time so I need to choose wisely.

I was very frustrated. Put it that way.

The characters just FUCKING KEEP ON HESITATING IN SITUATIONS THAT DEMAND PROMPT ACTION.

The Manga is Rubbish. The Anime is a rubbish version of the Manga.

Hence the Anime is rubbish squared.

The Dark Knight... it has a similar scene at the hospital between the Joker and Harvey Dent (I think).

always wondered: for small (and large, i guess) businesses, is there an advantage for them if i pay credit rather than debit, with my check card? do they get the same fees either way on average, or what?
