So explosions tends to be MUCH more louder than dialogue on my sound system. What setting do I need to adjust so when I'm watching a movie at a moderate sound, a random explosion won't rumble my entire apt complex?

Dynamic Range Compression - you'll usually have a few settings, for example - low, medium and high. Each one determines the amount of "levelling" affecting the peaks of sound vs quieter parts of the movie.

Plumbers unite!

I moved house recently, and in this house there is a hole in the hallway. This hole leads you to under the whole house (like storage space - the kinda storage space you would expect serial killers to have to hide dead bodies.). However, the water pipes also run under there. Now for whatever reason there is a pipe that sticks out of the opening and the copper pipe has been bent back and forward to get it into the position is has been in, thus I think the pipe had already been weakened.

I nudged the pipe and now it is dripping water, not very fast as the crack is tiny. We put a bucket under there and empty once every 9-10 hours. Not a horrible situation but not the worst either. I come from a relatively not a lot of money type of family, and a plumber is out of the question at the minute.

Question, is there anyway to seal up the crack on a copper pipe? Can it be welded closed? How easy is it to weld?

I am trying to decide if my coworker is austistic, is just socially awkward or just an asshole.

He:

* Has tried to give me a mix cd.
* Tried to invited himself of the the house of our 21 year old male intern. Offering to purchase a case of Natty Light for an evening of Halo.
* Flirted with my boss's wife.
* Talks like a pirate.
* When he found out I went out a couple times with someone we know mutually, asked me what she smelled like.
* Tried to punch or knee other coworkers in the groin in the hallway.
* Attempted to wrestle me ne late night in the office in front of other coworkers.
* Constantly asks me if I know what /b/-tards are.
* Claims to be part of Anonymous.
* Uses his desk phone to talk about WoW. The phrase I specifically heard was ,"I'm the baddest tank in the baddest guild and no one fucks with me or my crew."
* Looks like Jay Barschel's Evil Creepy Twin
* Has no concept of personal space.

When a picture is taken, no matter from what camera, how do you grey out the rest of the picture other than the background?

Similar to the picture below.

you would need a color filter unless you want to do post processing

Duplicate the layers, mask off what you want to keep color in the top one and then desaturated the bottom layer. That's all you have to do, in the simplest explanation I could think of. Assuming you have photoshop or something with the same capabilities.

how safe is it to use superglue to close up cuts/wounds?
Very safe. As noted above, you can use it for small wounds, but doctors even use it to seal up large wounds (don't try it at home).

That's modified bandpass filtering. You have a frequency range that's let through 1:1, and the rest is being modified in some fashion. In pseudocode, for your example, it's something like
Code:
FOR EACH fragment IN picture
   IF fragment.colour NOT IN RANGE(#aa0000, #ff0000) THEN
      newcolour.r = AVG(fragment.colour)
      newcolour.g = AVG(fragment.colour)
      newcolour.b = AVG(fragment.colour)
      fragment.colour = newcolour
   END IF
END FOR
Just on a chip (for some cameras, that is), and with the range parametrized.

No, he tries to talk like Jack Sparrow.

Wait, I don't know what authentic piratey is.

Is anyone else getting malware warnings when searching for anything using Google Image search? Half the page loads and then Avast pops up saying it blocked something.

Edit avast is blocking most Google Image results, wtf, it said it had blocked 51 malicious URLs...

I have plumbed in a new dishwasher and it is working to an extent. Unfortunately, I have a small (drip, drip, drip) leak where the outlet from the dishwasher connects to my main waste pipe. What is my best option to seal around the joint to fix the minor leak?
Is this the U-pipe? It's VERY delicate to being slightly out of line with the other two pipes it's connected to, causing it to leak. The best thing you can do is just take it out and put it back in more carefully over and over again, you basically have to put it into both of the other pipes at the same time to keep it straight.

If it's another pipe or the u-pipe, the o-ring might be out of line or even worn out (but you said it's a new dishwasher so it's probably not worn out). Make sure that the o-ring is flat as possible in the pipe and then reinstall it to see if it still leaks.

If it's cracked then it's probably corroded so it'll need to be replaced. It's pretty easy/cheap to just replace the pipe by yourself though. Just turn off the water and take the pipe itself to a hardware store (like Home Depot or whatever) and ask for what you'll need to replace the pipe and for some advice on how to replace it, you can probably do the actual labor in 10 minutes even if it's your first time.

The only problem you might have is if there's a lot of calcification or rust between the broken pipe and another one it's connected to. It can be very hard to get it out, I was replacing my sink a month ago and that happened and I had use a sawz-all and hammers to remove the old faucets. Turned a 30 minute job into a 3 hour one.

If he has autism (aspergers specifically in this case I guess), it sounds like he's on a very mild end of the spectrum. Like he would have problems actually understanding social/emotional cues if he had aspergers. It just sounds like he's aggressive/assholish in general.

Searching for porn on google, are you? Use no-script in any case.
Also stop using Avast, it has too many false positives. MSE.

Best place to buy largeish containers of Vanilla in the US that doesn't cost a fortune?

I'm getting calls from area codes that don't exist.
I already registered with donotcall registry but shit's getting insane. It's like 5 to 10 calls a day from numbers that don't exist. Normally an 800 number u can search on the net and figure out where it's from.
Here are some numbers I got called today from:
255 694-3027
572 448-6648
584 424-2290
525 580-6712

How can I make these calls stop?? I'm wondering if it has to do with last spam call last week. It was about installing some stupid home security sign at front lawn and I shouted to caller to stop calling me. Can that person register my phone on other marketing calls as a revenge?

uhhh...so a girl made me watch an episode of sex and the city.

Am I crazy or is this an accurate summation of the show? :

Women who express sexual liberation by not being "tied down," even if the guy seems like marriage material because they don't want to settle, so they go and screw lots of different guys in order to find someone they're truly happy with, but when they find that guy who seems like marriage material, they shoot him down because they don't want to settle.

Now I have a theory that the difference between cool girls and lame wishy-washy girls is if they watch this show.

Do advertising companies have access to my credit card information?
The reason I ask is because I watch hulu a lot and I've never had a sneaker commercial pop up... until today. I found it strange because just two days ago I bought the some sneakers at the mall using my amex card. Kind of creepy to think those ads get customized to my buying habits :/
Did you do any research online before buying? Go to nike.com or anything?
No none at all.

Three questions.

1. I'm a huge Beatles fan. Is it worth getting the Anthology trilogy?

2. H.P. Lovecraft sounds cool. For someone who doesn't read alot of books even if he should, is it still doable to read them or are his books just for pros?

3. Which book should I start with?

Can anyone help me in finding the best website for teaching the basics of Photoshop? All I can find is advanced partial tutorials. Is there a noob-friendly site that guides you step by step to how to use the program efficiently? Thanks.

Great site, really help me when I was learning.
Look through their Basix tuts to get started. Their advanced stuff isn't much more difficult though.

Start with a collection like The Best of H. P. Lovecraft: Bloodcurdling Tales of Horror and the Macabre by H.P. Lovecraft and Robert Bloch then go from there

Total Training was great for learning things while not boring you to death.

I went through the CS2 version and the dude was pretty entertaining. Not sure if he's still doing it.

That can be faked in photoshop but it looks like it was made in Max/C4d and post was done in PS.
In Max all you'd have to do is use the type tool, extrude, apply a shiny diffuse, put in some lights and render.

Any ideas how to fake it as close as possible?

You might be able to use the new 3D type tools in PS CS5, I haven't messed with them much. In illustrator you would just write out the text and then go to effects>stylize>Extrude and Bevel; and then mess around with eh settings in there.

Optical audio ports are still going to be present in next gen consoles right?

I'd hate it if companies decide they're obsolete because of hdmi. I have so many wires and hardware that depend on the extra port.

Thats actually a good question. I know you're not going to like this but you could really clean up/streamline your setup with a modest reciever, if it comes to that.

I have an av receiver, but it doesn't have dolby headphone for when I don't want to bother anyone with my sound system. I use a separate amp that connects via optical for that reason.

I'll probably have to buy new hardware or use a converter, yeah. :/

So my twitter account is acting strange: Whenever I log in on my laptop with my account, It only gives me the black tab with all the options like home, profile messages etc. I can click on them but they won't do anything, I can't log out and I can't acces other Twitter pages. I've already tried to unblock some pop-ups and I've deleted al the cookies so I could log in again but it stays the same.

Anybody knows what to do about this or has the same problem (The account works fine on another computer)

Anyone seen the movie Number 23 with Jim Carrey? I've been experiencing the same thing with a stupid number for quite some time. I'm no psychotic about it, it's just really damn annoying :lol Is there any way of dealing with it without going to a psychiatrist? :D I am of course aware of the fact that I'm not *actually* being haunted by a certain number but it keeps popping up, and since I've seen the movie, it's like a constant reminder and it sticks out even more because of it xD

I've been experiencing this for the last two years with the state of Ohio.

You live in Florida but the plates on the car in front of you are from Ohio.

Talk to the new guy at work. He's from Ohio.

Researchers discover the cure for cancer. Facility located in Ohio.

Disgraced politician resigns from office. In Ohio.

Tonight the Kansas City Royals take on the Chicago White Sox ......IN OHIO.

So, I recently saw this commercial for an addiction show on tv but they were odd addictions. The one that stuck out in my mind from the show was a lady who ate toilet paper? My question is, how does someone's mind get to this point?

I had the same thing with the number 23. My social security number adds up to it and just a ton of other things in my life revolved around it. I got it tattooed in roman numerals on the back of my neck and has since died down. So uh...get a tattoo?

I don't believe there has ever been a vote to remove the monarchy.

Hey You said:

This is going to sound prejudice, but there's no way around it.

I always assumed they were the pinnacle of what white people could be. From the viewpoint of a minority, that is saying a lot.

It's a prejudice thought because, for all I know, Kenyans are just as enthralled by the Royal Family. I personally never cared until Lady Di died which was tragic.

Does netflix have a way of tracking how many homes are using a Netflix account? I let my sister and girlfriend activate their Xbox 360 and iPhone (respectively) using my account. My mother seems concerned that Netflix is going to take legal action against me or something.

Anyone ever hear of someone having gotten in trouble for such a thing?

MrBig said:
No, but they do vote on whether to keep getting taxed. All the royal family's money comes from taxes.
You can vote between a few groups that all tax to differing degrees, there is no option for no tax and certainly no royal family.
