Any chemistry majors here? I'm reading a paper on the synthesis-guided structure revision of a compound and it talks about ROESY, Rotational Overhauser Effect Spectroscopy, and all I know about the nuclear overhauser effect is that it allows you to use NMR spectroscopy to see the distance between two nuclei, allowing you to find the relative positions of different atoms on a molecule similar to spin-spin coupling but unlike spin-spin coupling, it happens through space and not through chemical bonds.

I don't know the actual physics on that and can't really find an explanation online but I have to do a presentation on the paper and it's probably better if I can actually explain what ROESY is rather than just show the results the paper discusses.

So .. back when i was maybe 13 or 14 i remember watching this movie on sci-fi channels saturday morning anime block that I absolutely loved and wanted to watch again a billion times but could never find the name of the freakin thing and sci-fi channel never played it again (that i saw)..

It was kind of a futuristic war setting where a majority of the major players in the movie would mob around on these uni-wheeled motorcycle type of things. They could go up walls to a certain degree, turn around on a damn, haul ass if needed.. and i'm pretty sure they had like a single gun out the front of the "bike" ... The climactic battle took place against (i think) a super large hardcore tank on a stretch of highway that had been torn/fucked up and was now basically like a quarter pipe made out of concrete that leads to nothing .. maybe like a giant on-ramp were the highway it was supposed to connect to was obliterated a long long time ago ...

Help!

Does anyone know what font name is used for the "active" text?

Why do people have weird voices in old movies, is it something to do with the technology at that time or was that how they were made to sound? I'm watching cleopatra now , and all the guys sound annoying

Is there anyone who can help me translate a couple of Japanese web pages? I really want this but I can't tell from Google Chrome translate if it's in stock or not....

If you can help, a PM would be much appreciated!

Classically trained actors I'd wager.

They were used to training based on the theater as opposed to method/conversational acting now

Exactly this. It was the acting style of the time period. That mixed with decidedly low-tech equipment and voila. But annoying? Bogie is not amused.

I want to start writing a novel (I already have most of the components down in my head) but I don't have the motivation. I've tried writing before and I get to around the 10th page before I just get bored with it. Note that I've tried writing other novel ideas. I haven't even tried this one yet and I think it's a good novel even if I don't want anyone else to read it but myself. So how do I motivate myself?

then you dont want to start writing a novel, lol

honestly, if you arent excited about getting your ideas down on paper, why do you expect anyone to be excited to read them?

Have to give credit to an old roomate who posed this on his podcast, but on BJ and the Bear, what the hell was Sheriff Lobo's jurisdiction??? Wasn't he a county sheriff? BJ McKay was a cross-country big rig driver, but Lobo was always following him around trying to arrest him! Unless I've got my facts wrong (and honestly I have seen the show in years), isn't this a glaring plothole???

I just bought a college style letterman jacket at 50% off because it was missing an embroidered logo on the chest.

I'm now looking around to see what patches I could use to decorate it with. Not had much luck so far: I considered the old school Atari logo, but that's a bit cliched now, and I also considered Camp Crystal Lake but that's about all I can come up with :(

Any GAFfers have any good ideas on how I can customise my new jacket? Bonus points if you manage to find any No more Heroes inspired patches!

So in the States is the 'weekend' considered Friday and Saturday?
Good point, I didn't think of that. Having Sunday as the first day of the week makes no sense at all then. Here's what Wikipedia has to say about it:
According to the Hebrew calendars, traditional Christian calendars and the Islamic calendar, Sunday is literally the "first day" of the week. According to international standard ISO 8601 Sunday is the seventh and last day of the week.
Once again ISO > religion.

Secularly, Sunday is the first day of the week. Some religions base it around Sabbath which would be the last day of the week- Saturday. To add to the wrinkle though, some religions made Sunday the Sabbath day to coincide with it being the last day of the week.

I think it's the first day of the week and the weekend is misnamed as it actually includes the beginning of the week too - like parking on a driveway I guess.

I think of it as Saturday being on one end of the week and Sunday being on the other end of the week. The week is more like a piece of string or a stick. There is no begging and end, just two ends.

PHOTOSHOP HELP

I have a layer. I can nudge it around my canvas using the keyboard arrow keys and it moves, but when I use the Move Tool (V) and click and drag the layer to reposition it, it just snaps back to it's original place.

What's going on here? The Layer's position is NOT locked in the layer panel thing on the right. I'm assuming I changed some preference?

I don't think people call the start of anything the end, I guess "pass me that end" if it's rope or something. Weekend is also not weeksend/weekends, there is a singular week in the word. But it could just be a misnomer yeah.

The only thing I can think of is that you have some key locked down or you are hitting some other key as you are moving.

I'm pretty sure there is a format option in the drive settings. Clear your cache while you are there.

and my hdtv only has one hdmi output, so will a hdmi splitter allow me to connect a ps3 and a 360 for the same tv?

just do a full format of whatever devices you have on there (go to system, then memory...you'll see.) You can transfer saves to a flash drive if you think you'll get one in the future.

How about bookends?

Honestly, though, there's not really any point in arguing a position for an etymological standpoint. English is such a writhing incestuous slut of a language. Our words come from all over the place and constantly change meaning within the language.

Well, you don't really put to bookends back-to-back facing in opposite directions. Whereas Sunday as Saturday are next to each other, even if you consider them parts of two different weeks.

What does OP stand for as far as these forums go? Also, what does rttp stand for? I know that lttp is late to the party.

OP means original post, and RTTP means returning to the party.

In Ford commercials where they give someone a new Ford with all the options to replace their old car for a day or week...why do they think it's a viable advertising method to pit a car a person bought (with whatever options the person could afford) against a brand new Ford with multiple thousands of dollars put into every option available? OF COURSE the person is going to say the Ford is better with power-assist parking and navigation and whatever else Mike Rowe is spewing out of his hat-wearing head. "Oh yeah, this Ford is way better than my Honda." No, its available options that you just got to try for a week are awesome. They say nothing about the quality of the car itself, just how cool the expensive options are.

Is it illegal to dispose of/destroy money?

I have no need for pennies so I either toss them in the garbage or throw them on the ground.

Orellio said:
Yes, it is 'illegal' to destroy currency, but I guess that only applies to paper bills? Anyway, throwing away pennies isn't "destroying" them so I think you're okay.

It depends on the country and on what terms the State wants to punish those who do that. For example, in the UK you could get arrested for tarnishing currency due to the fact that the Queen's image is on it. On the other side, did you know stamps are accepted legal currency? If you want to pay with them, they have to accept them.

Because a King is higher in rank than a Queen, and she is the original heiress apparent.
Not exactly.

There are two ranks of Queen, Queen Regent and Queen Consort, the husband of a Regent is a Prince, the husband of a Consort is a King.

If you're going to take the time to throw them away, take the time to get an old bucket and throw them in there. They'll eventually add up to something worthwhile and it won't cost you anything extra to turn them into paper money.

Marketing psychology, designed to influence you into mentally buying a product, thus easing you into the path to actually buying it.

Pretty sure week-end was how it used to be written. Lot of contractions are lost over time through popular use.

I painted a baseball helmet for a costume I'm working on. I used plastic paint. After it was cleaned up to my liking (straight lines etc), I sprayed a clear top coat on top of it to protect it. Had the opposite effect, after drying it created giant bulging cracks all over the paint. I've sanded the cracks down, but it will definitely need to be repainted.

Would it be a terrible idea to just sand the looser paint off around the cracks and repaint on top of the original paint? I'm lazy and don't really want to meticulously remove all of the paint.

Coffee grounds (amongst many other things) act as a natural deterrent for ants. I put some coffee grounds on the ground around my dog's food bowl, and haven't seen any ants since.

Are there any other easy solutions for other common house pests? I don't have any bug in mind, but you never know when some info along these lines could come in handy. I heard about the coffee thing on the old Love Line radio show at least 10 years before I ever actually tried it and it turned out to work like a charm, so I'm just curious.
