Since I forgot how old our cat was, I asked my father about it, and he said thirteen years. Is that old for a cat? Am I going to find it lying dead soon?

That's the cat, by the way.

My experience with cats are that they live 17-20 years. Granted, I've only known about 3 cats that died of old age, but your cat probably has some years left, if it is healthy.

The text font size is large for me when browsing GAF, which is strange because it's not that big for other sites. I've tried changing the font size options in Firefox, but it has no affect, and I don't see any options under User CP. I need to stretch my browser window to 80% of my monitor screen to get thread titles showing on one line. I didn't have this issue on my older PC. How can I change this? Am I missing something obvious?

You're probably zoomed in. Press Ctrl+0

This might be really dumb but I'll ask anyway. When I burn a cd it takes up space, but when i delete what I burned on the cd it doesn't give it back. It still shows the space as being occupied on the cd even though when I go into the cd directory there is nothing in there. Have I missed something in computers 101? And is there any way I can get that space back?

CD-R - CD-R, or CD Recordable, drives allow you to do everything that a standard CD-ROM is capable of doing with the added ability of creating your own CDs. An excellent solution for anyone that is in need of a CD-ROM / backup solution. Tips on buying these drives is found on this page.

CD-RW - Like a CD-R drive, a CD-RW, or CD Read/Write, drive allows you to do everything that a standard CD-ROM is capable of, as well as read and write to a CD-RW disc thousands of times instead of once like a CD-R drive. While a little more expensive, this is another great solution for backups. Tips on buying this these drives can be found on this page

I am about to get a bike soon. It is a 10 speed, and I was wondering...

Do people actually shift gears when they bike? Back when I had a mountain bike I would just keep it at one speed (left at 2, right at 6).

if you're going up and down lots of steep hills.... yes

if the roads are mainly flat... probably yes, depending on how much speed you want and how much effort you want to put in

Okay, this is driving me crazy. I'm looking for a minimalist 80s retro album with a double moon on the cover. It came out in the last few years.

Why is it recommended and expected that people drive with 1 foot? As in, their dominate foot for both gas and brake? Is there some science behind this?

Because if you have both feet on the gas and brake, you risk the chance of stepping on the gas instead of braking in the event that you need to make a sudden stop.

Gaf, I'm looking for a new laptop.
criteria:
- price should be under $500
- smaller than 12"
- must have every feature a normal pc has (e.g. macbook air has no optical drive and is thus worthless)
- windows 7
- trackpad (i hate touchpads)

edit: ideapads don't have an optical drive
ugh
but i'm not sure i even need one...save for burning cds, i never use mine
is there such a thing as a USB optical drive if i do need one once in a while?

I have an tech / upgrade problem, too. What should I get?

- Macbook Pro (my battery is dying slowly (I have a 2009 MBP)
- iMac (additional to my MBP, some more hardware power)
- PC (cheap, better hardware as the former 2, can play games on it, but I have all console + this hasn't OSX, it's loud and uses a lot of space)

Yes there are usb optical drives, look on newegg. I'm not familiar with that price range so I can't help you with the computer though.

I'd always recommend switching back to PC. If you buy from pretty much any of the better vendors (assuming laptop) you'll get hardware that is much cheaper, better, and longer lasting. My laptop from 2008 ($1300) is still outperforming current gen macs, and is still able to play just about any games I want on high (even crysis 1/2). I'd go to HP and build one to you specifications though, since their batteries last the longest in my experience (~6-7 years on my old one and it can still maintain a charge for about an hour browsing the web)

It's a hugely personal choice though, so if you've got a preference for OSX for some reason, or are tied to specific programs that aren't available on PC you could be locked in.

Is there a comprehensive Far Side book? Or one that has commentary from Gary Larson (such as the Penny Arcade collections or the Calvin and Hobbes that Bill Waterson wrote a bit about each comic)?

(In the opinion of gaf) Are audiobooks cheating? About a week ago, I read my first book in about 5 years. I didn't realize how much I missed reading, and that magical phenomenon of reading words, but not being aware that you're reading and only being aware of the picture your imagination is forming.

Unfortunately, I don't have the discipline to make myself sit down and read on a regular basis, as potential reading time gets eaten up by games, tv, and my family. Even at bedtime, which many consider to be the ideal reading time, reading would still be at conflict with iOS gaming. The reality is I really enjoyed reading that book the other day, but not as much as I enjoy other media.

I'm thinking of turning to audiobooks. I've downloaded a couple of apps on my iPod, and the idea is to listen for the 10~15 minutes before falling asleep (using the built in sleep timer to minimalize the confusion of trying to determine where I left off before dozing off).

However, I'm not sure if I'm ok with the concept yet. I think it's safe to assume you lose your internal voice somewhat, and I'm not sure if the experience would be as enjoyable as 'the real thing'.

So what does gaf think of audio books?

A friend of mine is willing to sell me his unopened 64GB 3G iPad 1 for a ludicrous price (like, less than 200 dollars), and I'm still deciding on whether or not it'll be something I actually need. Can anyone comment on its abilities as a note-taking device? I currently use a netbook for lecture notes, but I'm finding it impossible to really use to write papers and do any actual work when I'm not at home on my primary computer. The screen is too low-res.

Would an iPad satisfy me if I were to buy a keyboard case for it? Does anyone else do this?

creeper question incoming! This is for anyone who watches BBC America. Recently they have been airing these new Rembrandt commercials. In it a woman says verbatim: "Imagine your teeth are giant glass sculptures covered in yellow graffiti." Then she waves her arm in a cleaning manner and two cleaners clean it. Then it zooms in on her face while she speaks again. Oh God her face! I love that face so much. She has brunette hair which is made into an elegant bun and she's wearing red lipstick and beautiful mascara. Skin in white btw. She's also wearing a blank white blouse which is tucked into a black miniskirt. So she says (remember the camera is zoomed on her beautiful face) : "But there is another layer of staining called (something)". Then she talks about Rembrandt whitening paste but I can't see her face cause the camera is zoomed out again and focused on the giant tooth made of glass and it slowly becomes white. Then in the end she says: "Go to 1Rembrandt.com to save money on this shit, etc.". I need to know who this actress is. The funny thing is she's not even the hottest woman I've ever seen. There are way more women more attractive than her it's just that she has something in her that looks nice. I'm sure it's simply the lighting and the makeup that's doing this to me but I just want to know who she is. I've already searched google. But google being google, all that either comes up is the "black actress" in a rembrandt commercial or the kiss rembrandt commercial or the Angelina Jolie 1992 rembrandt commercial. I've even gone into the databases but I can't find it because they haven't updated their fucking database since 2007. imdb doesn't have it because it doesn't cover tv commercials. This is a new commercial. Perhaps only a month or two old. Is there anyone out there that can help me?

There are external USB DVD drives that you can just plug in when you need it. So if you can live without an internal DVD drive, then I would suggest the Acer Aspire Timeline X:

It's looking around for a new school laptop this summer and that's looking like the best contender so far.

I have dual citizenship with Spain and need to get my American passport renewed but I have my Spanish one. Can I make a roundtrip from the US to Spain, with only the the Spanish passport?

Okay. I feel pretty dumb. How do I avatar quote?
I've been trying, but it doesn't seem to be working right for me.

Edit: Or I guess to be more specific, how do I avatar quote someone whose avatar is saved on GAF?

You need to rehost the image.

(as you should always do)

A coworker is going to use my post for several days. The problem ? He's way too curious. How can I delete everything my Firefox has in memory ? (passwords and history mainly)

Options > privacy > clear recent history > everything > check everything and clear

Then run ccleaner to clear your temp files and everything else

Where does Windows generally store Flash caches for Steam games like Machinarium? I keep losing my saves and I don't know where it is.

Are you using CCleaner? For some reason using that wipes the folder Machinarium saves are in.

From Yahoo answers:

C:\Documents and Settings\%USER%\Application Data\Macromedia\Flash Player\#SharedObjects\WZ6JQ3HB(or some other gibrish)\localhost\Program Files\Machinarium\

Weird question, but this has been bugging me for years.

Does anyone remember a Domino's Pizza commercial for their "Pepperoni Fanatic" line? It had a guy screaming after getting the pizza delivered, saying something like "I love this pepperoni fanatic pizza!!!", etc... this may have been a local commercial (Minnesota), but I'm not sure. It might also not have been Domino's, but I'm pretty sure it was. Thing is, I can't find it anywhere and am starting to think I just made the thing up. Hahaha. Could anyone help me find this? Thanks guys.

Recommend me a good, easy to use, video editing software.

Do you have a mac? If so, iMovie that comes with Life (I believe) is pretty good. Windows: It also depends on how serious you are with editing, but I've had a friend who enjoyed Windows Movie Maker for simple edits.
