This thread is for stupid questions that don't deserve their own individual threads

This is not really a stupid question, but I'm a junior and can't start new threads. I've also searched for a 'gaffers helping gaffers with homework' kinda topic, but couldn't find one :(.

So my gf had this assignment in her english class:

"You work at a bank. Write a formal letter to the loans manager recommending a microloan for Ms. Silvia Lopez, a woman who wants to start a catering service for the people who are building a new road near her house.
120 words"

This is what she has:

"Dear Mr Jimenez:

I am writing to recommend a micro-loan for one of our oldest clients, Miss Silvia Lopez, who wants to start a catering service for the workers of Copri Construction Enterprises, who are building a new road near Washington square.

Miss Lopez has been a client of our bank for nearly fifteen years, and her abilities as a smart and dedicated entrepreneur have made her financially secure. She finished paying her mortgage loan on her Lincoln avenue apartment last year, and also owns a 2006 Hyundai Accent. Her husband is also a client of our bank, and they don't have any children.

There are currently 150 employees working in the construction site, and Washington square has almost no diners or restaurants that cater to working class customers, as it is located near a rich neighborhood.
For all of these reasons, I believe that it would be a very smart decision to give the loan to Miss Lopez.

Yours sincerely,

Maria Jose Garcia"

What do you guys think? I'd really appreciate it if you point out any mistakes, or have any suggestions.

Thanks in advance!

I have a question about 30 Rock...I've been watching season 5 on Netflix and there is a character on the show I don't remember, a blond Russian woman who is one of the TGS show writers. She hardly ever says anything, she just seems to stand with the group and smile and nod a lot. I thought maybe this was a joke, that at some point Liz was going to turn to her and say, "Who are you, anyway?" but no, she seems to be a real character.

So who is blondie, and did they ever give her backstory?
I don't recall if they give her a back story but she was featured heavily in the one episode where Tracy starts to view her as a sister and takes her out to strip clubs and has her join his crew.

In a few hours I am about to go to a German restaurant that's supposed to be authentic and have all sorts of great beer. What beer should I order?

honestly, any at an established German restaurant/beer garden. A good bartender/waiter will make a good recommendation based on what you like/food pairing. Try a wheat beer first.

Your letter is fine. A natural speaker is probably more likely to write "at the construction site" rather than "in the construction site".

"avenue" in "Lincoln Avenue" needs to be capitalized because it's part of the street's name in this case.

I would split up the first line into more than one sentence:
I am writing to recommend a micro-loan for one of our oldest clients, Miss Silvia Lopez. She wants to start a catering business to serve the workers of Copri Construction Enterprises, who are building a new road by Washington Square near Miss Lopez' home.
Also "Yours sincerely" isn't a common salutation, especially for a business letter. I would just write "Sincerely"

These are minor changes that I would suggest to a native speaker though. For an esl student it's fine as is.

edit: Sorry! "square" in "Washington Square" needs to be capitalized as well.

If its not all strictly German I'd recommend Corsendonk Abbey or anything Delirium .. ie Delirium Tremens or Nocturnum.

What's the word for short, choppy sentences? Could these be called paratactical sentences? The answer is honestly pretty important.
Personally I'd say "staccato sentences" because people would be more likely to already be familiar with the musical term. Parataxis probably fits too though.

While I agree with your assessment, I think I'll go with "paratactical" (so thank you for the confirmation) because it fits better with the meticulousness of the narrator I'm describing (not that you would have any way of knowing that).

edit: on second thought, I can use both. Thanks!

I'm looking for a series of commercials that I saw online a few years ago. I think they were from Japan. I remember them being really powerful and emotional. One showed a father getting into a slow-motion car accident as his mind flashed back to his estranged son and all of the things he wished he had done differently.

Another one showed a man racing to the hospital to witness the birth of his new baby. Or something like that. That one is a bit fuzzy for me.

I think they were for some type of health insurance company. I can't seem to find them.

What is the expected value of the proposition?

Cyan said:
EV = P(makes next two free throws) * payoff - P(does not make next two free throws) * payout

So it's a .33 chance he makes the next 2, .33 makes one and .33 he misses both right? or not that simple?

Edit: Not that simple. They've given you his probability of making a single free throw to start out with.

Cyan said:
There aren't three, he's only taking two shots. So the possibilities are: makes 2, makes 1 and misses 1, or misses 2.

Yea that was a typo, so it is .33 then, thanks.

EDIT: Fucking shit, I need to get this last problem right to get credit for this assignment but if I get it wrong I don't get credit..... Of course the last one is the most fucking annoying.

Here's a really dumb one that's been driving me nuts for a while. How do you type the vertical lines that are in thread OTs? It's been gnawing at me since they first appeared.

|Thanks guys|

Anyone here know a good place to buy t-shirts? No local shops I really like so I think it'll have to be online for me. Something with cheap shipping preferably and a nice selection.

What is the expected value of the proposition?

-$11

The most probable result is that he won't make the next 2, therefore you pay $11.

Did Steve Jobs actually wear a Three Wolf Moon shirt, or was that a photoshop?

Seriously, you think Jobs would wear a three wolfs howling t-shirt to a conference?

Windows 7, gateway desktop store bought in august.

Yesterday, my free trial of Norton AntiVirus expired. An hour after it expired, my computer caught a virus off an unclean site. (At least I admitted it, please don't make fun. I didn't realize the trial had expired til it was too late). Computer crashed.

Surprisingly, was able to use a system restore point from September 25th. Installed ad aware free. Computer runs just like a peach except 2 issues:

1. On September 25th, I was using a free trial of Norton Internet Security. The computer still has all the files from this program. All my Norton AntiVirus files were wiped. When I try to uninstall internet security, nothing happens. When I try to open it, nothing happens. Why? How can I get it off my computer?

2. After the restore, Windows update found 10 updates automatically, I installed them and restarted. Now, when I check for updates, Windows update says " error 80070005, cannot check for new updates." How can I get this to check for updates again?

If anyone has answers for these, thanks in advance. If you guys need more detail, let me know.

I don't want to edit any registry values or HKEYs or whatever else is too complicated. I am a basic user and I want my computer to work the same as when I bought it.

i'm planning on doing a group videocast thing, but none of us have webcams - few people have tablets but i think the built-in cameras are kinda weak. the PS eye is cheap these days, right? how does it fair for this kinda task? ive got a buddy who says if we use 2 or more he'll edit it for shots and such, just trying to see if this can be done on the cheap.

Clean install is the only way you're going to the that. btw post your tech support questions here next time.

Is the account you use the only one on the computer?

Yes it is the only account I use, and i'm pretty sure it has administrative rights (since it is the only account)

I have tried right-clicking and running Windows update as administrator, same error.

Same with Norton. Right-click, run as administrator, nothing happens.

I have posted the question in that thread. Not really sure what you mean by clean install. My PC never came with a boot disc, and I don't want to buy Windows 7.
