Tim Miller on Deadpool success: "Nobody saw this. No one planned this."

Few people expected Deadpool to become the massive success it became. It currently holds the record for R-rated opening weekends, worldwide R-rated film, February openings, President’s Day weekends, and the X-Men franchise among other categories. But thanks to Tim Miller making a fine, entertaining movie, the film caught on with audiences and now sits atop a giant pile of money.

On opening weekend: (They were hoping for 50m)

So I was just hoping for that, and honestly, up until that Thursday when it opened, Fox was only thinking fifty. I distinctly remember a phone call from someone at Fox and they said, “I don’t know what the fuck’s going on here. I’ve never seen this before. I don’t know what this number is.” And I think it’s all due to the fans and social media and people going, “Holy shit. That didn’t suck. Let me tell my friends about it, and they’ll go and they’ll come out and say ‘Holy shit. That really didn’t suck. Let me tell a few more friends.’”

Really shows how important strong word of mouth is these days, especially with social media and how it can boost a film (or harm it)

I'm still stunned we live in a world were Deadpool had a better domestic gross than a movie with Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman.

‘Holy shit. That really didn’t suck.
Those were the exact words I used when I walked out Deadpool. I thought it would be like Amazing Spider-Man or The Wolverine where it's just ok but nothing special. But damn, it's honestly a great movie in my eyes.

My feel good box office result of the year no doubt. Nothing else this year is going to please me like this one did. Man oh man, 59 million budget, 760+ million haul.

Kudos to Ryan and the fans that pushed relentlessly for this movie to happen.

Tim is a cool cat. It was his production company that made that concept.

And BvS was released on Spring Break (where all the kids would have been out of school to go to the theater all week) while D-Pooly was on Valentine's Day (a period usually reserved for romance movies).

However, Fox knew that counterprogramming Valentine's Day with an R-Rated action/comedy would work, as they'd just done it the year previous with Kingsman.

you know they did something right when my wife asked me to go see this on Valentine's Day

what a tremendous effort from everyone involved - right down to the marketing guys

However, Fox knew that counterprogramming Valentine's Day with an R-Rated action/comedy would work, as they'd just done it the year previous with Kingsman.

son of a bitch, my wife wanted to go see Kingsman when that came out, too...

It really does amaze me just how successful Deadpool has been. I think people are forgetting that Ryan and co. had to work for YEARS to get the movie made. And then the studio slashed the budget at literally the last minute. These are not signs of a studio that had a lot of faith in the project.

Also anyone that says they saw Deadpool opening to 150 mil is so full of shit their eyes are brown

Deadpool: "Hey guys, thanks for coming to the sequel. I'm just sitting here literally burning the budget for this movie because Fox had the balls to doubt me the first time"

Cue Tim Miller running into try and save the money

I want Deadpool 2 to just be him lighting a pile of money on fire

It really is the best thing they could do. Just have the first 5 minutes of the movie blow 95% of the movie's budget somehow so we can just get back to normal. Or, I dunno, make Deadpool's suit gold and have his pistols be diamond-camo'd out or something.

This movie making this much has been my feel good story of the decade. Every time I'm reminded how much money it made, it just puts a massive smile on my face. :p

Yeah, I mean, I knew it would be really successful. But my metric for "really successful" was like, $400m, or upwards of $500m in a freakish scenario. Which would have been really, really, really fucking good. Like, nuts.

Anyone who predicted $760m is either insane and extremely lucky or literally a wizard.

The most profitable superhero film of all time, and it's not even remotely close. Just look at this craziness:

They made a film with practically the salary RDJ alone had for Age of Ultron... Very happy for the whole team who fought so hard to get this film made.

Just shows you that if you make a movie that respects the source material and is actually good then fans will go see it. If you don't then well it bombs hard like BVS has post launch weekend.

However, Fox knew that counterprogramming Valentine's Day with an R-Rated action/comedy would work, as they'd just done it the year previous with Kingsman.

Yeah, but that counterprogramming can only take you so far. Kingsman only raked in $35M it's opening weekend, while Deadpool beat that by $100M. And even then, I don't think anyone thought that it would have the legs to beat what was suppose to be the biggest superhero film since Avengers 1 while said biggest superhero film would have worse legs than Niles Caulder.
