Tim Miller on Deadpool success: "Nobody saw this. No one planned this."

Superman so should be fun. Make him more like Silver Age Superman with all the bizarre stories! Instead we get Captain America: Extra Boring Edition, when even Cap comics reinvented themselves as top tier espionage comics long ago.

Absolutely. Wonder Woman doesn't look fun, either. It's like they try so much harder to make them less fun.

I was on the fence until I saw the Red Band trailer. After that, I was ready as hell to watch this movie. Not gonna lie, in terms of drama in a comic book film, Deadpool's cancer diagnosis scene shitted on everything else that's ever been put out.

Yeah. Thinking back on it now, it was a sincere scene with stakes that were clearly lined out for the audience that gave it a huge impact.

Miller absolutely has carte blanche for Deadpool 2. He's going to have access to crazy funds. I just hope he's able to keep himself focused on the lessons he learned and the skills he developed (like running an impressively lean production with no wasted dollars). He's a talented and smart guy, but I imagine it's all too easy to slip when after your first film your suddenly given more resources than you ever imagined. Hell, even veteran directors slip.

And of course, hopefully Fox is smart enough not to try dicking with things.

I think M. Night is the king. But his movies still make a profit! Somehow....

Well his first four movies were financed by Disney and all relatively low budget movies with good returns. The Sixth Sense is still the highest grossing horror film of all time. His first flop was Lady in the Water, and he's never worked for the same studio twice again. He'll take a budget from whomever is willing to finance him.

I'm not sure I would agree with your earlier post that Fox gets their hands in deep to big-budget pictures. Maybe for a lot of things, but their biggest hits during the Tom Rothman era are still Star Wars prequels and Avatar, and you can be sure that Lucas and Cameron both told him to fuck right off. When Jim Cameron wants to make a $300m+ blue cat space movie, he's making a goddamn $300m+ blue cat space movie.

If smart they won't blow up the next movie in a big way with a ton of special cast or anything, keep it relatively small, it helps. We don't need a billion heroes to show up with all the X-Men or whatever. Though I'm sure most would love to be in the sequel due to how great it did.

Well that's true!

Who would've thought a Jungle Book adaptation, a Disney buddy cop movie about race, and freaking R-rated Deadpool all would've topped Batman v Superman? Of those three, I still think Deadpool is the most surprising, but this has been a fun first few months of box office this year.

Oh god no

Deadpool was never ever ever ever ever ever going to come out in China

Even without China, better release date and the addition of 3D/IMAX, or even a more substantial budget that didn't result in huge chunks of the movie being axed at the last minute could have done it.

You can bet that DP2 will have all of the above, and fox will be expecting better returns.

Well, this was legitimately one of the posters for the movie:

LMAO!This is hilarious if true.

Deadpool had some great marketing that got people talking on Social Media.
That with word of mouth and lack of good R rated superhero movies is why I think this worked so well.

Merc' with a word of Mouth

Thats my contribution

That's going to be a good Deadpool 2 OT title.

Deadpool is definitely a smaller superhero film, but it makes up for it with unique set pieces and a fun script. I hope they keep it lean for the next one too. Give them some more money to do what they want, but I hope everyone involves approaches it with the same sensibilities they did with this one.

I wouldn't mind seeing more superhero films like Deadpool. Not necessarily just more violent, but smaller superhero films. Not everything has to be end of the world destruction porn.

Who could have thought coming from pure bombs, Ryan with Deadpool a character nobody knows would come out with this kinda of success.

The people that are not surprised about this are straight up Nostradamus descendants.

Playing Deadpool was Ryan's destiny, just like Jackman is the one true wolverine

It boggles my mind that these guys are surprised by this.

Somehow, I don't believe that you really think this. Even most Deadpool fans were sceptical about how the film would do. People have been saying that Ryan Reynolds kills franchises; he's not a draw; R-rated films don't work. I doubt that even the biggest Deadpool fanboy in all of Deadpool fandom seriously thought that this film would take off in the way that it did.

Yeah, we all hoped it'd be a great film that did the character justice, and was profitable so we'd get to see a Deadpool/Cable or X-Force film. But I think you're kidding yourself shouldn't be surprised by a Deadpool film is going to make more money than Batman Vs Superman.

A lot of credit has to go to the marketing team as well, they did a flawless job in getting the word out for the film, and setting the tone. I'm worried that there will be way too much studio interference for the sequel because they'll want to make it a 'big budget' flick with 'big budget' expectations. I hope they just let the people involved carry on doing what they're doing.

As a deadpool fan I can't be more happy.
I just hope the sequel could be as good as the first one. Don't fuck up Cable.

If we're being honest Ryan Reynolds personal efforts -- however coached or whatever -- deserve the vast majority of the credit. Decent film. Wonderful, personal marketing that made so many of us feel like "this movie is made specifically for ME."

Turns our there's a lot of us.

Ruff Ryders Anthem.

Apparently Joker rides out to 2pac in suicide squad haha. Enough of this crusty AC/DC, time to get some rap in here.

Well, I wasn't being exactly clear I suppose. Yes, I doubt anybody would have called Deadpool being the runaway success that it is ahead of time. However, I meant more that if you make genuinely good, high quality movie, people will go see it and tell their friends. But some of the drek that has been out in theatres recently makes me scratch my head as to how it made it so far while being so bad.

I don't think anyone saw just how successful it would be, but I think it was obvious it wouldn't bomb.

Wonder how the second will be now that it has to stand on the shoulders of the first.

Gotta be Party Up.

I was going to say that. Y'all gon' make me lose my mind up in here? That just fits.

There are lot of good movies that get fairly wide releases that don't do very well. Like, a whole lot. Just making a good movie hasn't been enough for decades, if it ever was good enough.

My wife was more excited about this movie than I was. Which was weird, because she hates Ryan Reynolds (I'm indifferent to him, but always thought he'd be a perfect Deadpool), but she loves Deadpool. I'm actually not a big fan of Deadpool. I don't hate him, but again, in indifferent to him. I've enjoyed seeing him on small bits, interacting with other marvel characters, but wasn't chomping at the bit to see the movie.

The genuinely entertaining trailers, and my wife's infectious excitement got me more on board. We saw it opening weekend, and yeah, I fucking loved it.

I didn't expect the movie to bomb, but I didn't expect it to shatter records. I figured, with a $50 million budget, it'd, at the very, very least, break even. Optimistic prospects had it at close to $200 million of the movie was as entertaining as the trailers lead me to believe.

Boy howdy was I wrong. I don't think I've ever had such a turn around in a character and an actor as I have with Deadpool and Ryan Reynolds. My only thoughts on the sequel are that theory cast Stephen Lange as Cable, and maintain the genuinely funny sense of humor, and ironically enough, heart and earnestness that the first film had.

Probably my favorite movie set in the X-Men movie universe, with Days of Future past following it. If I had to rank them:

1) Deadpool
2) Days of Future Past
3) X-Men
4) X-Men 2
5) The Wolverine
6) First Class (I feel like I'm one of the few people that didn't like this movie that much, despite loving the cast)

X-Men 3 and Wolverine Origins are dead to me. Never happened, I don't even know why those titles popped into my head, since they don't exist. Weird.

I'll definitely be snagging Deadpool when it releases.

I'm down for an Invincible film:

Maybe a Luther Strode movie as well:

I'd geek the fuck out over a well done Invincible movie. That series is probably one of my favorite, if not favorite, superhero books out there.

Now who should play Mark Grayson? I feel like Josh Brolin could be a great Omni-Man. As for Mark, I'm drawing a blank. I'm sure Hollywood wouldn't have a hard time finding a young, handsome, physically fit white boy to play the part, though.

And yeah, it'd have to be rated R. Especially if they get to the Conquest story arc for the third movie...

I'm actually surprised that there hasn't been any kind of Invincible movie rumored, let alone made. The comic has been around forever now, fucking Kick-Ass got a movie AND a sequel and Walking Dead has a TV show AND a spin-off.

You'd think that with Superheroes as big as they are, and Kirkman's other major property being the success that it is, people would have jumped on the opportunity to adapt it. People obviously read it since it's still going and has had like a million crossovers by now.

When this movie claimed the studios personal best OW record, I can only imagine the WTF faces all across the studio heads.

So I was just hoping for that, and honestly, up until that Thursday when it opened, Fox was only thinking fifty. I distinctly remember a phone call from someone at Fox and they said, “I don’t know what the fuck’s going on here. I’ve never seen this before. I don’t know what this number is.”

There is expected success and then there is....this, incredible, lmao.
