Tim Russert died of a heart attack :(

Wow this is awful for politics.

Meet The Press with Tim Russert was gold among a bunch of rhinestone political shows.
No one can replace him. The research he did before hand and his level of knowledge is just unsurpassable.

Like Peter Jennings, there is no replacement for Tim Russert.

Watching Olberman right now is heart breaking.

All I know is we just lost a major voice in the world, and I really had no idea I had such appreciation for the man and his work until this moment. Wow.

Olbermann's finally starting to breaking up again... it's getting much harder for him to keep his composure after hearing the affection of the guests regarding Tim Russert.

'There was nothing like the childhood joy I felt when speaking to Tim Russert on one of those many Tuesday primary nights, and hearing 'Great Question, Keith.' There was no greater compliment.'

- Keith Olbermann

~ :(

RIP

The way I see it, the well being of a peoples in this day and age relies heavily on having responsible journalists. Very tragic, and a huge loss for Americans.

Definitely one of the best beltway journalists, and you can't deny that he was the most influential. He was fair to a fault (even ignoring reality to present both "sides" of a story when the facts disagreed).

Sounds like he was a generally great guy, so it's too bad for his family and colleagues.

What I find incredibly emotional is the amount of respect and sometimes admiration given by both ends of the spectrum - from people in the far left to those in the far right.

My Grandma's really going to be disappointed. She never failed to watch Meet the Press on Sundays. :(

The election in general really won't be the same this year without him. I know it's been said a thousand times today, but it's worth repeating.

Surprise death of 08'. Wow just wow
Yes it was. It's sad to see him go at such a young age.

I'm crossing my fingers that NBC won't let that blowhard Chris Matthews anywhere near the Meet The Press set. Keith Olbermann, though...

Just got back to Buffalo ... this SUCKS :'(

Beyond what he meant to my hometown, I can't even imagine a Presidential election without him. He will be missed.

My condolences to the Russert family.

I just heard about today. I am sad ='(

He was such a nice, fun, guy. You could tell when watching him how much he enjoyed doing his job. He was one of the good guys.

He may have been a gotcha journalist, but he was never mean or cruel. He was never looking to nail someone to the wall - he just wanted the people on his show to tell the truth, to be accountable.

I can't think of anyone who could replace him on MTP. Andrea Mitchell maybe, she's seems /credible/competent/non-partisan enough, though no where near as giddy/cheerful/huggable as ol' Tim.

Wow, I didn't realize that Tim was younger than Matthews too. And he looked up to Tim so much.

From his doctor, it seems he had heart disease.

It is sad. He was a really skilled journalist, and you could tell just listening to him that he was a good guy, and he really cared about the issues and about people. There's very few people like him in the media.

OH, GOOD GRIEF! NO!

;_;

It's been said many times on this thread already, I'm sure but...he was truly a great guy to watch. He was one of the many people who made the primary season and this overall election season so much fun to watch.

It's really NOT going to be the same without this guy on the screen. But I can bet that he's going to still be covering this election in his own way up in Heaven. God's gotta give him at least THAT! :D

Dammit man, I was already pretty sad with it being Father's Day and only a week or two from when my Dad died a few years ago. I think I'll pick up Big Russ and Me for my mom though:/

This is just stunning, devastating news. One of my coworkers broke the news this afternoon and all of the day-to-day grind and stress of my day was stopped dead.

I've never been engaged in a Presidential election like this one before and it's turned me into a big Tim Russert fan, seeing him on the debates, the primary coverage, his contributions to other MSNBC shows, and of course Meet the Press. I don't know how he could possibly be replaced--the level of research and attention to detail he demanded of himself and his staff was unlike any other journalist I've seen. He asked the tough questions and pointed out inconsistencies wherever he could find them, but he never did it in a mean way or like blow hard.

What sad timing too just getting back from Italy celebrating his son's college graduation and with Father's Day right around the corner. But like my mother said when my father passed away, he died the way he lived: working hard and doing what he loved.

RIP Tim.

I'm guessing Mathews has a better shot than Olberman. I'll be disappointed if either of them get it. Olberman has been called out as just another partisan mouthpiece. Mathews just like to get loud and irk his guests and occasionally has a good insight, but he comes off as much less biased.

I've been thinking about it, but what are the chances of getting someone outside of the NBC family to host MTP, like Bill Moyers or Anderson Cooper.

Like I said earlier, CBS has been trying to steal away Matthews to host their Sunday morning show for a long time now. I would suspect he is one of the few names likely to get it.

But we wont know for a while. Tom Brokaw is filling temporarily.

I don't think it's an impossibility. I'd hate to think any of MSNBC's current personalities think they could fill Tim's shoes. Going outside the NBC pool might be there best option. Also, who knows if they are going to get one person to be the new MTP host and the new NBC Washington Bureau Chief. I Think they might get different people. With his popularity now, I could see Chuck Todd getting the Bureau chief job.

I dunno if the NBC news room would survive Chuck Todd getting the Bureau Chief spot. Matthews and Olbermann would probably riot at being passed up.

Well said, Olbermann is a liberal version of O'Reilly in my opinion, they're both opinionated blowhards who tend to smear and smirk and I can't stand either of them. Russert at least always struck me as trying his utmost to be completely balanced and hit everyone pretty hard on their BS. I think Matthews would do well filling in for him, or some unknown perhaps, that might be interesting as an option to consider.

Mathews just sucks most the time when he does an interview. He's upstaged in his own round table discussion on his show most the time. The roundtable stuff is still alright though, but Meet the Press to me was much more about the one on one interviews.

I've never seen Todd interview anyone I've only seen him do his analysis stuff and participate in roundtable discussions (never as the moderator), So I have no clue how he might do on Meet the Press. I mean, I'm sure he can channel Russert on Election night with a dry erase board, but what else does he got?

They will not get the Bureau Chief spot--it's a very nuts-and-bolts position, they have to hire and fire, train staff, do research, and assign and direct coverage. The Bureau Chief usually is not a television personality--Russert was reluctant at first to go onto TV (he was bureau chief before he became the moderator of Meet The Press). Matthews and Olbermann are TV personalities first and foremost.

I rarely care about celebrity deaths, but this guy is an exception. He was an example of intelligent and well researched journalism in an age of spinners. Ultimately the media has a huge influence on policy, and if more people in the media were like Russert, it would literally save thousands of lives and improve standards of living.

Chuck Todd is not the interview type. He doesnt have the backbone to press politicians. Come on, I love him too but pushing politicians isn't his style.

But I'd bet hard money he'll be the new Bureau Chief of NBC News.

For someone like me, who has a Father in his 60s, this really makes you think.

Russert was one of my favorite people at his position.

It's a good point. It's possible for Todd, I mean apparently Russert actually sought out Chuck Todd to join the crew a year and a half ago and brought him along and made him what he was.

And Todd's about to break down again:(
