The black man everyone at Activision can agree on
IF EA already has the agreement in place for X of years of Bond license, how would this change that?

MGM + Sony Movie Studio = Largest movie library of any two other studios = UMD, Blu-Ray movies as standards.

Whoa, I didn't think about it that way.

Yup it also means Sony has more sway in deciding what format people use (their format ) making a betamax less likely ;)

It's not just Sony btw..it's a group of investors that includes Sony, Comcast, Providence Equity Partners, Texas Pacific Group and an investment arm of Credit Suisse First Boston.

Yeah many people seem to think Sony is coughing up all the money directly. How big are FOX nowadays?

Specifically,

If the deal goes through, Sony will add MGM's 4200-strong movie library to its 4000 movies and own almost half of the colored motion pictures available today.

:O :O :D

Enjoy those Bond games from EA while they last...
Eh...Sony has no problem farming out the rights to the Spiderman movies to Activision. I doubt they'd want to piss off a partner as valuable as EA.

Yeah,

They'll definitely keep there partners happy, mostly. However, Sony will get paid on both ends. Licensing & Royalties.

Plus, I can't wait for the new Wizard of Oz games. They'll be bigger than Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings combined. Pure gold I tell you!

I thought MGM is kinda bad nowadays. Does anyone know any good movies they've released the last few years. And btw Columbia SUCKS!

Since when has a movie franchise belonging to Sony Pictures ever effected what console it was going to be on? I think Spiderman 2 being multi-platform proves Sony has no problem whoring out their franchises to everyone.

Edit - I guess this is what happens when you leave a message half-typed to go get something to drink and forget to refresh the page to see if anyone else posted what you were going to post,

I thought MGM already sold off a lot of their older library of films to some other company a year or two ago.

Nope. They haven't sold anything off. In fact, it's the opposite. They've been buying other libraries like crazy, including Orion & Goldwyn and doubled their library.

They did have an agreement with TimeWarner for them to handle the DVD publishing for the past several years, which Time SUCKED at.

Damn you MGM, just let New Line make The Hobbit!!! >_<

My thoughts exactly. They can't make it themselves, for christ's sake, just let the people who can make it and stop squashing the license like jerks,

The only thing I really really really like from MGM is The Outer Limits. One of the best series EVER.

I just wanted to take a moment to remind folks that MGM has the rights to Tex Avery's animated shorts:

Spiderman the movie, is more of Marvel Property not a Sony Property. I doubt Sony as little to say who Marvel sells the rights of Spiderman the Movie to.

time warner might be saving it's money for a cablevision purchase (which would be a smart move unlike it's aol merger).

And even i am moderately surprised
"If you think MGM's back catalog equals low profits, you're crazy."

IP doesn't just guarantee you profits.
Look at MGM's track record themselves.

I'd love to see Sony go down the pay-for-download route and start opening up their catalogue.

However, i think it's more likely that things might get stuck on UMD/BluRay. Saying that, Sony are positioning themselves as a "Broadband company" so perhaps this really is another step towards digital distribution of vast amounts of content? I know they bought out a few european companies who specialise in short documentaries/films (1000's of them) that would be ideal for padding out such a scheme.

I think that Kutaragi and Stringer are shuffling cards in Sony well enough: I think they will use all the available avenues to profit from their IPs. Sony Connect will expand.

I don't think Kutaragi has all the power yet. It seems that Sony still have issues internally with any good idea he has.

They shall fall under his mighty sword.

They shall conform to his genius.

Still, the Sony I see with Kutaragi and Stringer is the Sony I wanted to see for a while.

So... Kaz knows Kevin Bacon?
Kaz Hirai? He'd have to, wouldn't he? Has anybody been able to "beat" the 6 degrees game? And I'm sure there's fewer degrees of separation between Kaz and Kevin than there is between Kaz and Kutaragi.

Well, Comcast is a partner in this deal, so it stands to reason. If this deal is close to final, it'll be interesting to see how responsibility falls out amongst the investors, particularly between Comcast and Sony since they both have the distribution channels to make immediate use of the content.
