Todd Howard: Elder Scrolls 6 is still in a design phase

At this rate Todd Howard will be dead or in a nursing home by the time Elder Scrolls 7 releases.
he'll be at the nursing home flashing the nurses aid whenever she comes by with his little shriveled up 2 inch shrimper. " It just works!" "New liver spots dlc adds 16x the detail!"

Well, in all honesty they have a successful MMO still providing cash and no reason to push forward basically what would be the same thing.

How fucked up has game dev gotten that studios who used to be able to put out a game every two years now need 6-10? Fucking ridiculous. Something needs to change or we will get one game per franchise per generation soon

I don't think this means what people want it to mean. Of course it's still in design phase because full development is happening on Starfield. They'll get to the next project when they're done with Starfield. I bet we see Elder Scrolls 6 this generation, by 2026 or 2027 the latest.

So if it's still in the 'design phase' 3 years after teasing it at E3, then what phase was it at back then...?
The announcement phase. Its pretty common now to announce a game without having anything to show like God of War, Metrod Prime, Bayonetta, etc.

LoL. So glad we got GAAS horse shit like TESO and Fallout 76 instead of them working on ES6.

Elder Scrolls 5 came out 10 fucking years ago. It will probably have been out 15 years by the time ES6 hits the shelves. LoL what were they thinking over at Bethesda? I don't blame the Zenimax shareholders for hating Bethesda management because Bethesda is run poorly.

They are just as bad as valve in these long cycles in which they had such a huge seller and long-running franchise to all of a sudden for no reason take 10 years or more to make the next installment. But evidently the consumers are buying all their other crap so we will see if the longstanding heritage of the company is still going reasonably well or if they're slide will continue and as much of a fan as I am I hope they don't mess up what should be an easy home run.

It's not "no reason".. they decided to make FO76, and Starfield.

They wanted to do something different; make an MP version of Fallout.. make a game with a new IP.. they aren't going to give TES to some 3rd party or something or massively expand their dev teams to make TES 6 at the same time.

Developers making the projects they want to make next is all this is.

They wanted to reassure TES fans that they weren't abandoning TES, but they outright stated when announcing TES 6, and in like a half dozen interviews over the last 3 years, that their teams were busy on other games and wouldn't be getting to TES 6 for a while.

For anyone actually paying attention, Todd's statement is just confirming what we already knew.

It's semi Valve like.. in the fact that Valve also.. does the projects they want to do, as they have enough money to do that.. but unlike Valve Bethesda revealed their future plans so fans knew the game would eventually come.

As an Xbox adopter since MS first console I feel like all of their games over the last 6 years have been in a design phase

343 just can't finish games, Lionhead spent years on a game that must have been so bad MS cancelled it and ditched the studio, and Rare for the most part just doesn't make big games...

They just didn't have big projects in the pipeline really, other than their tried and true Forza games they've done some pretty successful AA games (or bought them late in dev like Outter Worlds.)

They need to become a better support publisher is the fact of the matter.

How can you even say that? Do you know when the "Teaser" was released?

You really didn't expect it to be in development by NOW? if you didn't you're just trolling.
They said the game was in pre-production when that was released.. and have repeatedly stated the game is not in full development, that people need to be patient, that you shouldn't expect real info for years (last stated in 2020), etc.

this is definitely a next gen game unless MS gets other studios to help out. also it will help they are only developing for Xbox and PC now. don't need to waste time making PlayStation/Nintendo versions.

Design phase is still super early. Most likely won't come about til 2027. That was still a long time ago. Can't believe it's still in just design.

Better than rushing of course.

If it's 7 years after the release of Starfield I'm going to do some napkin math here. 18 years past Skyrim.
I'm going to assume the budget for ES6 is -puts pinky finger to mouth- ONE BILLION Dollars.
Skyrim sold only 30 million copies.
30 Million * 60 dollars copies =1.8BILLION
That leaves 800 Million that Tod Howard spend on Hookers and Blow for the past 18 years.
800 Million / 18 = 44 Million a year.
They have 420 employees that comes to 104,000 per year per employee.
Skyrim paid 420 employees 104,000 a year to make one game in 18 years.
Not a bad deal, Yes?

Hopefully Starfield is worth this big of a gap between TES games. At least the work that's going into the engine will be of benefit regardless. Can't wait to see how moddable Starfield will be after what I expect are some bigger changes to the core of Creation Engine. It certainly needed updating to catch up with modern competitors, but I'll take the jank if it's between that and no/limited moddability.
