Tom Brady suspended for 4 games; Patriots lose first-round draft pick; fined $1 mil

This is a good thread. Realistically, if they cheated during the Super Bowl, their title should be stripped. However, the process to do that would be too complicated. And really, would the Seahawks be happy they won the Super Bowl like that? Probably not.

I'll just leave this here...

http://yourteamcheats.com/cheaters/

Patriots aren't even close to the biggest cheaters in the NFL.

People keep posting this.. Is it some authoritative source?

There might be some good info there, but considering they have an entire section to whine about how The Patriots are accused of cheating shouldn't people at least suspect them of bias?

How accurate are they on their massive whine about Spygate for instance?

They also have an entire page dedicated to deflategate:

Good news for Patriot Fans.

Spygate story is fantastic, and I look forward to the delfategatge one being finished, but it's already a good read.

Their point system is totally arbitrary, but their presentation of the facts is solid.

The arbitrary points system is what really does them in, since the degree of cheating is entirely dependent on the point values that they decide to assign for each incident.

Agreed, though i do give the site credit for at least backing their claims with some sort of evidence, event if it is a news article, and to be honest the only part of that site i think is worth while is the spygate section, they seem to give a decent explanation of it and clarify some misconceptions about it.

EDIT: this is hilarious!

Things that took less time than the NFL's Deflategate investigation:

  1. The complete Boston Marathon Bomber trial, including jury selection (93 days)
  2. The complete Aaron Hernandez murder trial (77 days)
  3. Christopher Columbus' first voyage across the Atlantic in 1492 (70 days)
  4. Germany's invasion of the Netherlands, Belgium and France in 1940 (36 days)
  5. William Henry Harrison's presidency in 1841 (31 days)
  6. Apollo 11's trip to and from the moon in 1969 (8 days)

The point system is stupid but their accusations are cited and based on facts. It goes to show that everyone cheats and although that doesn't make what the pats allegedly did just disappear, they are the ones that get the majority of the hate.

The Patriots completely created this mess.

All they had to do was say "One of our equipment managers went over the line. It was never our intention and we will take full responsibility."

All Brady had to say was "I like my balls at the very minimal limit of the spectrum, it seems he took that too far and started to take the top off when it wasn't permitted".

Patriots get slapped with a 25K fine and the league moves on because the league doesn't give a shit about deflated balls, because the league

A) Let it happen to get the Patriots in the act in the middle of the AFC championship
B) Set such a small fine for the action that the league clearly thinks of it to be no more than a minor infraction.

All they had to do was say that and everyone moves on. Instead the Pats are going to fight this to the bitter end and most likely sue the league, or at the very least Brady is going to sue the league.

The league didn't care until the Pats made a big deal and fought every inch and denied any responsibility. This punishment is from the league reacting to the Patriots being the Patriots who are apparently Jesus Christ reincarnated and can't do anything wrong, not because the balls were deflated.

Honestly it's a long off season. Bruins are out, Celtics are out and the Sox suck. If the urban legends are true and the reason the league didn't implicate Belichick in this report at all is because he has an insane amount of dirt during the spygate investigation of other teams cheating, I would fucking love for this to become scorched Earth with everyone getting burned.

The league didnt care until the story exploded in the media and became a national story.

Edit: i agree with your assessment, the pats didn't make the situation any easier on themselves.

that's it?

do people really think this is a small punishment/slap on the wrist?

I thought this was pretty significant punishment considering the actual impact on the game where it was discovered.

1st round pick (on top of the 4th), a mil, and 4 games instead of just 2. I think it was done well and why most in the NFL are kinda shocked cause they thought the Patriots would get a softer punishment

So I have a question. Before this all blew up did the NFL ever issue any notice to the teams that they were going to start taking ball pressure seriously? Because it seems like they went for decades of not really giving a shit about it.

http://profootballdaly.com/sammy-baugh-threw-deflated-footballs/
“Kelly [Harry “Kelly” Miller], our clubhouse guy, would put the air in the balls we were going to use in the game. One day I asked him, ‘Kelly, how much air do you put in those damn balls?’ He said, ‘Thirteen pounds.’ I said, ‘Put in 11 today.’ So he did. And from then on, every time we played at home, we played with an 11-pound ball instead of 13. I liked the feel of it better. I knew what 13 felt like, and I had played with an 11-pound ball some in college, and it felt better to me.”

This would be fine except that the ball, according to the rules then and now, is supposed to be inflated with between 12.5 and 13.5 pounds of air. Here are the relevant paragraphs from the 1942

http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2015/01/needles_on_sidelines_former_jets_qb_jeff_blake_had.html
"... I don't know what the big deal is. It's not something that's not been done for 20 years." "Well, I would say (to a ball boy), 'Take a little bit of air out of it. It's a little bit hard,'" Blake said. "And then he'd take a little bit out and I'd squeeze it and I'd be like, 'OK, it's perfect.' That's it."

Don't misconstrue this as the "everybody was doing it so it's ok" defense. Rather I'm trying to highlight how casual people were about it and how unenforced it seems to have been since pretty much the start of the NFL and wondering when specifically that all changed.

Yes, this website is certainly an authoritative source and definitely not a fan made website.

lol.

The Boston Herald is literally the New York Post of Boston. I wouldn't put too much thought into their sensationalist covers.

So non-patriots fans, what can we do to reconcile this issue peacefully? I'm tired of bickering.

I'm sure we can reach some sort of agreement.

I'm ready to admit it was more probable than not that brady was generally aware of something happening if:

- non-patriot fans so being so mean to patriot fans
- acknowledge that ball deflation had no bearing on our success. Acknowledge this is a minor infraction
-that this whole scandal was ridiculous

In turn I'm willing to admit that
- any potential cover up would be worse than the crime
- that just because it's a minor infraction doors not mean it is alright to break rules and that it should be punished.

I am however unwilling to be ashamed of being a pats fan and I am unwilling to stop being a Brady fan. I still consider him the greatest qb to play the game but I am fine with any one not agreeing

1) Admit that you cheated and broke the rules
2) Admit that such a thing is an endemic part of the Kraft/Brady/Belichick era
3) Forfeit all the fraudulent wins (i.e. all of them)
4) Fire Belichick, trade Brady to the Jets, and force Kraft to sell the team
5) Have the city of Boston publicly apologize to the rest of the nation for embarrassing us as sports fans - as well as every single living person that has been to a sports game to root for a Boston team, even the pink hats (although if you get the pink hats most of your work will be done)

Can we add a note that all band wagon pat fans get shot into the sun or some other horrible fate. As a dolphin fan I like to debate with other teams and not get the constant "haters gonna hate LMAO!!!"

Love the Pats and Brady all you want. I have to defend Miami's undefeated season anytime it is brought up, you guys will be cursed with defending your -gates.

Bandwagon Pats fans?

I mean, the team has been good for like 15 years, at what point is the cutoff between fan and bandwagonner?

Fair enough, it has been a very long run. I'll change it to uneducated pat fans who have no idea about the team outside of Brady and still think Bruschi is on the team. Every team has these kind of fans but since the pats have been successful they are in the spotlight.

On an unrelated note. NFL just cleared Miami of any tampering chargers with Suh. I almost forgot about that, thanks NFL/Patriots!!!

Nope

3) Forfeit all the fraudulent wins (i.e. all of them)

Lol you can't honestly expect that.

4) Fire Belichick, trade Brady to the Jets, and force Kraft to sell the team

Belicchick and Brady are treasures. And least is a wonderful team owner.
