Tom Warren seems to throw cold water on rumours of Switch 2 being as capable as PS4 Pro

This thing docked might be 2tf at best

So now we're not just getting threads for rumours that never made any sense at all. Now we even get threads for reactions to said rumour...

Could we get something like a "twitter/X"tag for this kind of thread so I can immediately ignore them?

It's going to be really interesting to see the specs when it eventually releases. And how well will DLSS work on it.

Yep.

It will be more capable than PS4 for sure when docked but I don't think it will reach Pro level (in pure power, DLSS results might beat raw resolution).

??

"as powerful"

Yeah, as in he's laughing at the rumors about it being 'as powerful' as a PS4 Pro. When it will probably be more.

That's how I read it, at least.

PS4 Pro is almost a decade old and was running on outdated CPU architecture even at release. Won't be surprising to see 2025 Nintendo hardware be stronger than that.

It's a handheld.
It's Nintendo.

PS4PRO?, wow i'm pretty out of the loop when it comes to Switch 2 news.
I was thinking XB1 level, and maybe PS4 level at a push lol.

I think he is implying that it is much more powerful than ps4 pro.

Thats why its "funniest" rumour.

I'd a PS4 Pro, and tbh it seemed better then the PS5 Pro seems to me now.

I bought Horizon Adventure for my kid for Christmas and first thing it asks, "Performance or Fidelity". Fuckin' thing doesn't have a pro patch and it's a new FIRST PARTY title.

A handheld console releasing in 2025 is going to be as good if not better than a mid-gen refresh released in 2016. Anyone who thinks otherwise is drunk on copuim.

The issues is precisely about using TF as some sort of objective performance measurement.

It may have had some use a while back, but with the whole 'dual issue' calculation present with modern GPUs, you essentially get a reported TF number that's roughly twice as high compared to the actual performance.

So a 4TF docked Switch would in real world perform closer to a base PS4 compared to a PS4 Pro.

And we'll see it with the ports. Hopefully CD Projekt Red is willing to patch The Witcher 3 and bring Cyberpunk to the Switch 2.

From what I have seen this thing will be not much faster than normal PS4 in raw power. Of course it's newer tech (still 5 years old...) and with DLSS support but you can't beat physics (and that includes power draw).

I think the CPU will be quite a bit faster than the Pro's CPU, but the GPU will be more comparable to the one inside the regular PS4.

The Pro itself uses a mobile CPU from 2012 anyway. Not hard to beat that in 2025.

As if PS4 pro would even be good anymore.
In a stationary console, sure. But in a hybrid form factor? PS4 Pro-level plus modern architecture would be fantastic.

That would be a significant jump up from the Steam Deck, which is just about the only handheld PC in the same price range.

With that said, as much as I'd love to believe it, I'm not going to bet on a Pro-level Switch 2 let alone well-beyond.

Weren't they supposedly showing off the Matrix/UE5 demo behind closed doors last year?

Seems pretty capable of punching above PS4 and PS4 Pro weight class if true, no?

I would be pleasantly surprised if it can reach PS4 Pro levels docked.

Xbox One levels seems more realistic to me.

I see the Switch 2 as an indie power house + Nintendo classics + Nintendo exclusives.

I think they will add GameCube games sooner or later.

From this point of view teraflops don't matter.

I was thinking XB1.PS4 level as that would mean Switch 2 would be 3-4 times more powerful than Switch, which seems a very Nintendo thing to do.
PS4Pro level would mean Switch 2 being around 8 times the power of Switch, which doesnt seem to be a very Nintendo thing to do. And obviously more powerful than Pro would mean more than 8 times the power.

I dont know, like i said i'm out of the loop with Swicth 2 news but i will be VERY surprised it it reaches Pro level of power.
In fact i'd use the old 'Dont do it to yourselves' with this one guys!.

I don't see why some are thinking that a Switch 2 wouldn't be more powerful than hardware that came out in 2016? Perhaps the GPU won't be quite as beefy, but it won't be a tall order at all for the Switch 2 to have a far more potent CPU than the old Jaguar found in the last gen machines. It being made by Nintendo won't really matter when literal advancements in technology alone should see the Switch 2 performing better than a PS4 Pro, at least CPU wise.

That's Nintendo we're talking about. They'll give us a cheap toy and ask top dollar for it.

That's what I guesstimated. Pro is a tall order for a portable device, especially from Nintendo.
Its not really top dollar for the console. It's a modest margin because price is critical for adoption. It is top dollar for accessories and for games that took significantly less to develop than others at the same price.

It's a handheld device that will have 4 hours plus of battery life and a smaller profile than the PC handhelds. It's not going to be a graphical powerhouse. If it's a 2x increase on the Switch that's as good as we're going to get from Nintendo.

To be honest if it's as powerful as the Deck but slimmer, quieter and with a longer battery life and consider that a miracle.

Well i think cpu wise its a given, so you will probably get a lot of 60fps games on Switch 2. Gpu wise though, which is what really powers the actual graphic quality, i just cant see it being close to the Pro.

If DF is right, it should perform a bit better than PS4 and with DLSS be pretty close to PS4 Pro in image quality, but in terms of raw power it clearly won't be as good.

It's still selling for $300 as of 2025.
