Tomb Raider |OT| Lara's Misfortune

First death by QTE hehe...but damn does this game look good on the 360 or what,amazing...

About the DLC it tells you as soon as you enter the game when you can go there, forgot though,I will check later...

Loving the game so far, only an hour in, but the atmosphere really is phenomenal, and Lara controls better than Nathan Drake could dream of. What some of us called torture porn from the trailers actually feels like it fits in the game, which surprised me.

The game definitely opens up after you beat that awful scripted area at the start that the PR loved to showcase at events. The atmosphere in the island is staggering, among the best in the generation especially the part where you are in the forest hunting animals.

This is a good game. I am a bit tired to marathon this right now but tomorrow after work I will go balls deep in the game.

Tomb Raider 9/10 for me the game is amazing so far.

On either the last or close to last level so far.

I also just started playing in 3d. (1080p @ 24fps, but still playable, hard to aim I'm playing on my Bravia through HDMI, which is the reason for the low fps limit)

OH MY GOD.

I always assumed my TV sucked at 3d, and it kind of does, but at 1080p.... Holy crap. This is the first game to ever move me with it's graphics in a long while. Crysis 3 was great, but I never played it in 3d, I guess I should go do that, but C3 at 24fps sounds terrible...

I just got my Tax money, I should buy a 3d monitor setup... Might start a thread.

Anyways, on the game. Amazing. It's pretty much more than I was asking for. I love how the enemy AI works, I love the climbing. I love the pacing. I even have a kind of small spot in my heart for some of the side characters... a little...little..

I can't wait to finish and replay it for 100%!

This is the Tomb Raider I've always wanted.

Absolutely engrossed, so far.

Finished it yesterday. Roughly 13 hours and 70 something percent completion.

Will go back now and go for 100%.

Fantastic game. Can´t wait to see what´s next for Lara.

I am insane in thinking these guys may have built the best game engine in the business?

Technically everything about this game looks amazing: draw distances, foliage, lighting, textures, character models. And apparently it looks and runs great on all platforms.

I also really love the way there literally is no dividing line between in-game sequences and cinematics, to the point where you're often not sure when exactly a cinematic has ended and you're back in control or the game is awaiting user input.

About 3 hours in and it's so much better than I was expecting!! Loving it!!

30 mins in and I DO wanna protect her.

This game man.

Fucking awesome.

Now I really want a Nathan Drake and Lara Croft adventure.

As an old school Tomb Raider fan, I hate this game but as a person who loves videogames, this game is freaking great.
The platforming bits feel so good and the gunplay is really fun and smooth. I only have a bow and a gun so far and I find myself preferring the bow just because I love the way it feels. Lara instantly going into cover works surprisingly well too. Its nice not having to push a button to stick to walls.

I just
raided the wolf den and helped Roth out so he gave me the climbing pick thing
so Im not too far in. If the game keeps this up though, Im going to end up really liking it...which is something I did not see happening at all.

I love this game so much.

This is what I wanted from a Tomb Raider game.

Bring on the sequel.

Awesome game, it really is a true blockbuster adventure game. Obviously non fans of modern action games like Uncharted won't like this, even if it's much more open but I'm having a blast.

The game is beautiful, Lara is a great character, there's an awesome sense of adventure, crazy action, I'm never bored. The production values are immense too.

I gotta be happy with CD here, last game I loved from them was Soul Reaver but this is making me a fan again.

Those looking for deep and complex game systems and not exactly a summer action adventure blockbuster are gonna be disappointed, but I already want a sequel. QTE complains though are so weird, I died like twice in a QTE so far...it's so...easy man jesus.

I must be getting old or something.
My impressions from this game has left me completely awe-struck.
I've been standing around in areas way too long just getting angles and taking screenshots, which I very rarely do.
When entering tombs I slowly crawl my way ahead, tensing up and listening to the awesome ambient sounds, and looking at the awesome light/shadows flickering against the beautifully detailed cave walls.

Love my handgun and
the shottie
which feel really good and enjoyable.

Easily one of my favourite games in a while. But then again, I loved Dead Space 3 too so I might just be getting old.

So this is me (both guys) getting slain by Lara Croft (and her hair).

It definitely feels like that "everyone is a winner" mentality. If health didn't regenerate then I might be able to roll with it more but as it stands, it's hard to call this a good shooter because of how easy it is.

Aw man health regenerates? For some reason I thought there were med kits or herbs or something.

=/

Extremely quickly too.

There are quivers of bows literally every ten feet. It's so ridiculous.

Every single theme that is played up in the cutscenes is immediately invalidated by the gameplay.

And the hits just keep on coming.

Other than visuals and the hair, what's a positive most people are agreeing on?

Quick question: how much are you actually shooting?

If it's more then Uncharted (I hate the comparison, but you get what I mean) or the previous QD Tomb Raiders, wich I loved btw, I guess i'll pass.
You should be using your arrows more which feel good and you can stealth around a bit too to avoid gun fights. Right now I am enjoying the game play more than Uncharted's because of the controls.

Notice how everyone here has been comparing this game to Uncharted or even DS and RE4 before they ever compare it to a TR game... this is not a TR game so any comparison to previous TR games is completely useless. I pretty much see this as an Uncharted spin off game starring Lara Croft with a grittier atmosphere and better controls.

Best Buy is 360 biased.

All the PS3 copies were wrapped up tightly in those weird ass wire protection devices, crushing the cardboard slipcases...

The 360 copies were in roomy plastic boxes, in perfect condition.

/sheesh

I don't really think BB is biased.

The comic is pretty cool. And smells amazing.

I'll update the MP portion today when I get my 360 copy.

May cap a few screens as well. Hype!

edit: the game has a slipcase? awesome!

I'm OK with that. I enjoyed Crystal Dynamics' older TR games though, so it's a small shame that the puzzles are being pushed into the background, but I imagine their goal was to make a big splash with this game and then bring back the puzzles for the sequel.

I picked up my PS3 copy this morning and it wasn't crushed or anything. Can't wait to crack open the comic once I get home from work. :)

It is fun to run around for me, the same way it's fun to run around in Assassin's Creed. The game looks amazing, the island is really cool, and so far the gameplay has been varied enough to make me want to progress.

I'm obviously not as over the moon with it as some, but it's a solid action game so far (2 hours in).

I wish I had your optimism.

Who's fighting?

If people are allowed to come in this thread and oprah gif it up, why can't I talk about the things that are bothering me?

Maybe fighting was the wrong word. Just some tension between people enjoying it, and not. I don't care if people post their negative thoughts for discussion. That wasn't what I was saying in the slightest. People just need to let it not bother them.

This attitude didn't help that thread either and no one stated they are experts at ultra combos. Let's not twists words here, people didn't resonate with your opinion on the game so instead of defend the strengths of the game you left to complain about it on other threads.

The only people who continually support DmC are the OG DMC fans... people like you have abandoned the game for the next new modern game to hit the stores.

Games are not religions. I did not "abandon" DmC. I played it, enjoyed it, and finished it.

But you are right that the opinion did not resonate with me. Neither do ideas such as true fans, which I think is a childish conception that makes it sound like the members are a part of a high school clique.

But I am not trying to thread derail. I am just happy the cult of the true fan has not over run this thread like it has many others recently.

I'm enjoying the game so far. Combat and traversal are fun. The lack of a "glue to cover" is a plus to me. Lara is always very mobile. It's easy to run around flanking enemies.

It might be that someone is playing through the game and thinks he might be further than the person who posted, only for it to turn out that the spoiler tag is about something that comes later.

I don't see the problem in saying something like (third level spoiler)
spoiler here
. It takes like an extra three seconds out of your posting time.

I haven't played the game yet but I would like to participate in discussions while I'm playing through it, rather than have to wait until I beat the entire game before I can enter this thread.

How do you even do that for a game like this. There are no chapters. No timer. The only way to indicate progress would be to spoil an earlier event. You could try estimating your playtime or story completion, but that could easily mislead people if you're wrong.

Just stop with this madness!

Playing through the first hour had me seriously wishing I owned a game pad for PC. Liking the environments quite a bit.

It would give me a sense of whether or not the person is where I am so I can engage in discussion. If he said Spoilers for about 30% through the campaign, I would know not to click since I'm at 10%.

I wonder if this is an Nvdia problem. I am on a 7970 and have not had a freeze yet.

I'm on a GTX 570 and haven't had an issue. I have TressFX and Tesselation turned off.

I'm on board to pick this up for 360. Is the framerate decent? The screen shots look good for current gen standards. After playing through Dark Souls again, I am kind of longing for a game without a bucket of performance issues :)

Game has top notch atmosphere, almost RE4 caliber. I GET where people are coming from when they say it's a survival horror game, mechanically it isn't but the environments can be used to put a real survival horror game in.

Lara feels good when you control her which includes using the bow and jumping/moving around. Better than the Uncharted games in that regard.

More open design than Uncharted, more stuff to mess around with in between main missions like hunting wild life or just looking for artifacts.

Presentation is overall solid and I like Lara Croft. Can't say the same for the overall story and the rest of the characters yet... I prefer Uncharted in this category.

The pacing is excellent in the game another trait this game takes from RE4 that few other games do.

Sound design is solid overall but the score so far has been a bit low key.

It's a grittier (atmospherically), better controlling and more open Uncharted game but with a slightly worse overall story and characters + dialogue. I feel this is an accurate description of the game. For many people this will be a new experience as not everyone had a PS3 to play the Uncharted games on.

I really like the combat. The way Lara uses cover just works. No extra buttons to push nor does it feel like she's snapping in to place every time I get near a wall. I love walking up to an obstacle and seeing her naturally duck while resting her hand against it. Looks very natural. And the way she'll reach around whatever is in front of her to fire is sweet too.

The enemies seem to actually use cover fairly well too, both in attempting to flush Lara out into the open and keeping themselves hidden as much as possible.

The interface at the camps is neat. Not mind blowing or anything but neat.

The sound is excellent. I hate firing a weapon in a game like this and hearing a little pop when it fires. The weapon sounds here are very satisfying.

Spoke too soon about hoarding. Had to spend some salvage on the bow. Really enjoying the game so far and look forward to playing through the rest of it.

I don't agree with that so far, well, depending on which Uncharted you're referring to, but her movement set is kind of twitchy, in comparison to UC2's heavier feel, but it's still every bit as preordained and automated feeling. I'd give UC2 the combat preference by far though. This manages to look a lot more cinematic during combat, and in that it manages to sustain tension from the environment, but it's not as responsive, or rewarding to me, so far at least.

The way Lara moves in and out of cover plus her ability to dodge and use melee at close range feels way better than anything in Uncharted. I also like her jumping arc even if it's a bit super human in how far/high she can jump from a stand still. Plus the bow is more satisfying to use than any weapon in Uncharted.

Plus I never held the combat/controls in UC to any high standard, it was serviceable at best so this feels like an improvement to me. Granted the last UC I played was UC3.

Played a little bit before I have to go to work and I must say it looks really good. Lara moves a lot smoother than Nathan Drake but I can't tell if this looks better than Uncharted 3 so far. Can't wait to tackle it some more tonight. That 3rd QTE stinks though. I failed it like 7 times. X^\

Nor do I, but I still think it's much better. They're both still massively inferior to something like Vanquish, but they're not trying to be that.

You're gonna knock it out in a day? Damn dude.

This is what's surprised me the most about this particular game. People in here bangin this out in a day or two. Is everyone 14? I'm jealous. =(

I do think the melee is better than anything in Uncharted but the difference is that Uncharted is more of a standard shooter. It's like they combined the dodge aspect from Alan Wake and took the shooting from elsewhere.

As for the bow, I think it's mainly satisfying because it's essentially a OHK. If it was balanced properly then I'm not sure it would hold up as well.

I work like 10 hours a day so it's just not possible. I'm hoping I can stretch this out for at least a week or two. But itf its as short as people are saying then I could very well complete it by the end of the weekend

And what DmC DLC? Bloody Palace? If so then fuuuuuuuuuck. I gotta do that.

I played a bit after you meet up with
Sam and the other crew members
.

It's not as bad I imagined. I think people really played up that whole deer killing scene. In my head it sounded like Lara kills the dear and then proceeds to cry for 10 minutes only to go on a deer murdering rampage 5 minutes later. That scene is nowhere close to being like that though. I wonder if the rest of the narrative people have a problem with is like that.

Really disappointed how the ammunition situation is handled. I imagined they had some kind of mechanic were you had to salvage wood to make more arrows... but no, they are just laying around for some reason... and they respawn... So I expect everything to be that plentiful. :(

My only time with it is the horrible first hour-ish where it's as linear as can be with as many QTEs and press forward to advance to the next cutscene as a modern game can be. So if taken solely from that.....not good so far, but I'm expecting it to open up a bit.

OK, post impressions when you can then ;).

I humbly disagree. While I think Uncharted 2 was great in combat mechanics, its melee (and still is in 3) was just subpar. Tomb Raider in my opinion absolutely nailed the balance between melee combat and shooting mechanics. Playing it on TB just felt 'right'. Also the pacing is way better than Uncharted 3.

I'm very surprised that CD could enhance the formula like this. Naughty Dog B team should REALLY take note.
