Soma is great. Don't really care if you don't like fanservice.

Look dude, you don't get to tell me what I could and could not make it through, I found the fanservice crass and over the top and decided that it detracted too much for me. It is why I don't begrudge people who can't watch Kill la Kill. I don't care how great Soma, I had to watch
tentacle porn
and that is when I shut this off forever.

If you guys want a good manga to read then you should be reading Jitsu wa Watashi wa, the simple story of a high school romance in which things like this

TuyXd5R.png

happen regularly. Also it houses the greatest troll of all time, a troll so great she makes Aizen and Naraku look like incompetent fools who can barely string a plan together.

Uh, ok. I don't really give a shit if you didn't finish it. I say it's not shitty. That's it really.

Yes Shokugeki No Souma has foodgasms, yes it can sometimes get a bit weird like in the first episode when
the girl has a tentacle porn orgasm
but those are really just part of the charm of what is essentially a mix of a school and sports shonen about cooking. The excellent characters and story are what keeps people coming back to the manga and the foodgasm stuff really becomes more like the equivalent of a shonen finishing move for the various cooking battles. The cooking battles themselves are awesome because they begin to pay homage to various shonen battle series like
when two characters unleash their stands within their meals in a visual attempt to get the other to submit that their meal is superior

Also for Shard IIRC the first episode is really the only time they have any kind of
fetish tentacle porn
after that everything stays pretty vanilla in the manga IIRC.

Honestly I couldn't get into it due to the fan service either. Sometimes it's just too much, especially when it doesn't fit the context.

EDIT: For real though, manga dudes, you should all be reading Jitsu. Shit's amazing.

I know we've talked about this before, so I'll keep it short, but basically fanservice that acts solely as a form of 4th wall breaking is the worst.

Space Dandy's Honey outfit, dancing and posing at Boobies is fine and makes sense, but can still be considered fanservice.

-

As an aside, being unfamiliar with Shokugeki No Souma, it's hard to imagine how
tentacle porn, apparently
can be included in any sort of believable way in what seems to be a cooking show. (this is an offhand comment, not trying to imply anything, I dunno what you guys are talking about)

Bane? Get them on board, I'll call it in.

Well...
The protagonist likes to experiment with various foods, like his dad. The one featured was grilled squid tentacles covered in peanut butter. The girl that tasted it said it was so disgusting that it felt like she was being groped. This is how it played out in the manga

But as Bass said, after this it's pretty "normal".

I am being told this only lasts for two episodes though.
If my memory serves me correctly, it gets less frequent later on, or when it does, it's nowhere near as...I guess "blunt" as the first few chapters.

I don't know if I said it here before, but sometimes the beginning of manga/anime tend to be a bit shaky because it's in the process of figuring out what works & what doesn't, then usually gets better because things have started to pick up, characters/setting/plot/tone has been set, & the author (should) now have a better grip of what to focus on.

I mean, the beginning of Medaka Box is COMPLETELY different to later on in the series. Heck, the first & second season of the anime are proof of that.

Sometimes, the first few chapters aren't the best example of the entirety of the series.

OH BY THE WAY THE MANGAKA FOR SOMA ORIGINALLY DID HENTAI STUFF BEFORE JOINING SHONEN JUMP, COULD YOU TELL?

Edit: WOW, yeah, looking back at the prologue/Chapter 0, there was a pointless pantyshot. That pretty much hasn't happened since then. So yeah, my above statement stands.

It's fine if you couldn't get into it because of the fanservice as long as you don't call it shitty after seeing a small part of it.

And yes, if anyone is looking for a good manga to read, Jitsu Wa is legit. Shame that the anime looks totally fucked up.

Actually, that's only the artist.
The writer actually had a series in Jump before that. It bombed hard.

Honestly Seda as a whole I'd say Shokugeki No Souma's fanservice generally works in the context of the series. Yeah it is a bit silly and played up because manga/anime but the concept of a meal being so good that it "blows you away" isn't really that out there. As I said above the scene Shard is upset about while it is technically justified in story it does cross the line of going to far I'll admit that and it's a shame it's there as it's caused people to give up on the series half way though one chapter/episode before the story really gets going.

Y'all should be reading one punch man anyway.

Also any shonen out there with female leads? I've become really disenchanted with the standard clueless male protagonist.

Obvs already seen soul eater

Medaka Box though most of the good stuff is manga only :'[

And while it doesn't count as Shonen (it's Shojo) Yona of the Dawn is a pretty good manga/anime series with a really well done female character. Starts as a typical crying princess but is forced to mature when shit gets real in her life and her arc while a bit slow developing is very natural and well done.

I'm really after standard shonen formula except female lead. But I'll add it to the list regardless.

I know fairy tale has Lucy, but isn't mc the pink haired dude?

I'll second Medaka Box, but like I said, the first season's worth is completely & utterly different compared to the 2nd season & what followed in the manga (which SUCKS because it ended RIGHT WHEN THE BEST VILLAIN WAS INTRODUCED).

When you get to the first actual fight, that's when I'd say it starts getting good. Otherwise, it's more comedy based & silly hijinxs than action.

One Punch Man is amazing. Read all of it a few weeks ago and now I'm sad I have to wait for each chapter :(

Stay away from Fairy Tail.

Kyousougiga has a female lead. I really recommend it. Amazing show.

Yozakura Quartet kinda has a female lead but not really since it's more of an assemble cast. It has a lot of females though and they get a lot of focus.

The service is still good in the anime. In fact for parts of it it is one of the best animated shonen I've seen with a TV budget.

You can watch the first episode of Shokugeki no Soma on Crunchyroll, if you need a guest pass to watch send me a pm as I have a few extra 2 day guest passes I haven't used

They should totally air it on the Food Network. Reminds me of the days when Iron Chef was on.

On an unrelated note, it's totally awesome seeing Crispin Freeman here in person. Just finished a pretty educational panel on VA'ing.

I finished One Punch Man (at least the stuff that's been released so far) and I hate myself because its so damn good and now I'm going to have to wait to be drip feed chapters for the next however many years :(

If the anime can do the manga justice this is such prime Toonami material (not to much good) that it hurts. It feels like the story has only really started and already they are pulling Gurren Lagann level shit O_O

I'm sure US audiences will love some fried calamari coated in peanut butter

That sounds kind of good actually but I assume I'm missing something because I haven't watched this Food Wars show.

EDIT: Nevermind I just read the spoiler bars. LOL? No idea how to feel about that.

Read Shard's reaction to the first episode, said discussion about said episode, and then reread my post again. I'm sure you'll be able to figure it out :p
